Both political and film-industry observers alike kept an eye on this weekend’s box office for more than just Harry Potter ‘s record-setting haul. It also happened to be the opening frame for The Undefeated , director Stephen K. Bannon’s notorious documentary about the ascent of Sarah Palin to the national political stage. So how did it do in limited release?
Customarily on Fridays, when a new movie reaches theaters over the howling, nose-pinching, and often very funny protests of the critical establishment, the saltiest of those responses are gathered here for your browsing pleasure. That’s given that there is enough of a sample, or that the stinker in question is intended for a broad enough audience for us to advise viewers of the open manhole in their path. And then… there’s the Sarah Palin documentary.
If you have no idea who Tim Pawlenty is, we don’t blame you. The GOP presidential candidate polls way behind Mitt Romney, Michelle Bachmann and even Sarah Palin , who on top of being incapable, isn’t even running! Point being, T-Paw is running, even if no one outside Minnesota, where he served two terms as governor, knows it. So how does he change things up? Get his name in the headlines. More importantly, get Lady Gaga’s name in there. In this Q&A, he asks the interviewers which Gaga song is their favorite: Tim Pawlenty Talks Lady Gaga Granted, it was a personal and pop-culture interview, so it’s not like he name-dropped “Born This Way” in a debate. But he digs the song. Good to know. The a cappella version is better, if you ask him, though, and “Bad Romance” gives it a run for a money because of the beat. Think he’s making all this up? Even if he’s an avid watcher of Lady Gaga videos , we don’t expect she’ll be pulling the lever for Tim in ’12. He’s staunchly opposed to gay marriage.
If you thought the Sarah Palin campaign-boosting documentary The Undefeated wouldn’t resort to such propaganda-y things as comparing the former half-term Alaskan governor to a Marine while video of a burning building plays onscreen, some bad news : it does. On the upside, however, is this hilarious juxtaposition: “On day one, Governor Palin made it absolutely clear that this was a different governor,” says someone in voiceover just as a dollar bill is being cut up with scissors. Different! (Alternate: That’s one way to slash the budget?) The trailer for The Undefeated is here.
You read that right: Stephen Bannon, whose Sarah Palin documentary The Undefeated has drawn critical ire across the aisles , says an uncut version of his film will be released on demand following its PG-13 theatrical release July 15. The new cut will depict even more of the dastardly violence and vulgarity the former Alaska governor/vice presidential candidate has suffered during her rise in the public eye, including “crucifixions, lynching and suicides” sourced from social media. Pulling a classic double dip! Looks like Hollywood and its hateful methods aren’t all despicable, eh?[ THR ]
