Wyclef Serenades His Teacher, On ‘When I Was 17’

Former Fugees singer recalls trying to get out of summer school on the latest episode, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. By Dionne Buxton Wyclef Jean on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV Before Wyclef Jean began his quest to conquer hunger in Haiti, he had to get past his first obstacle: Mrs. Serrato. On this week’s episode of “When I Was 17,” premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV, Wyclef speaks candidly about the trials he had to overcome to shape him into the multifaceted man he is today. Graduation time had arrived and Wyclef was ready to get fitted for his gown when his high school guidance counselor told him he was wasting his time. “So I’m going to get sized up, and they’re like, ‘Well, it’s not necessary for you to get sized up, because there’s one class you have to finish in summer school,’ ” he recalled. “I’m like, ‘What?’ ” He soon found out that he had earned an F in Algebra 2, and in order for him to walk with his classmates, his teacher had to change his grade. So Wyclef — being the out-of-the-box thinker he is — decided an apple wasn’t enough to win his teach over: He had to do what he does best to persuade Mrs. Serrato to give him a better grade. “At 17, there’s a certain confidence that you have,” Wyclef said. “So I was like, ‘If I sing a song for this woman, she’s gonna melt and I’m gonna get a D and I’mma pass the course.’ ” Wyclef grabbed his guitar and waltzed into his math class with an original song. “I was like, ‘I just wrote a song for you and I would just like to share it with you.’ ” Did Wyclef’s swoon tactic work? Find out when the former Fugees member appears on Saturday’s “When I Was 17.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Wyclef Jean and “Awkward” star Ashley Rickards — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. Jessica Biel Has Let Herself Go

I’m not up to date on Jessica Biel’s work schedule, but whatever it is she’s working on now looks absolutely terrible. I have no idea what it is, but if they decided to make her character a disgustingly pregnant chick who wears velour tracksuits, it’s already got my vote for worst movie of the year. Jessica should have roles that involve short skirts, tight pants and possibly a tasteful girl on girl scene in a hot tub. Nothing too raunchy, something very tender between two gorgeous females. Jessica Biel in a fat suit… Big mistake.

Britney’s Got A Gun!

A few years ago if you told me you had pictures of Britney Spears holding a pistol wearing a pair of leather short shorts I wouldn’t have batted an eye, I would assume that was just another saturday night for the girl. Remember, that’s when she was all out of her mind crazy. Good times. But she’s supposed to be all cleaned up and on the right track again so I’m guessing this is part of some crappy acting she insisted on doing for her latest music video. What ever happened to popstars in tiny little hooker outfits shaking their booty with a bunch of sweaty hotties. Now those were music videos.

Amy Lee Skates To Detention On ‘When I Was 17’

Evanescence singer, Theophilus London and Chris Klein featured on new episode, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. By Nuzhat Naoreen Amy Lee on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV From accomplished vocalist to skilled pianist, Evanescence singer Amy Lee has plenty of talents to boast. But in the latest episode of “When I Was 17,” airing Saturday, Amy reveals another skill that might surprise her fans: roller skating. In the episode, the singer-songwriter recounts how skating around her high school hallways landed her in some serious trouble. “When I was 17, our school had really slick floors. There was this really big hall, and it was perfect for roller skating,” the singer says. So, Amy decided to take advantage of the situation. “The halls are empty when people are in class, and if it’s just study hall or art or whatever, then why not go for a little skate?” Her “little skate” however wasn’t without its consequences. “I don’t know why I thought that that would be good,” she says. “So, I was skating by myself. Total nerd. And some other teacher was in the hall, and I skated by, and she was like, ‘Detention!’ ” While detention is a pretty common punishment for misbehaving high school students, it caught Amy’s father off-guard. “It was a little bit of a big deal. She got in trouble, and Amy typically never got in trouble,” says her father, John. Of course, even back in high school, Amy found a way to translate her experience with the teacher who sent her to detention into something creative. “One of my art pieces after that was her getting skated over by a giant skate,” Amy says. “When I Was 17,” also featuring Theophilus London and Chris Klein, airs Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. Justin Bieber Fans Nearly Crush Chelsea Handler, In ‘VMAs Revealed’

Learn how an army of Beliebers almost mauled the 2010 VMA host on ‘VMAs Revealed,’ airing Saturday at noon ET on MTV. By James Montgomery Justin Bieber at the 2010 Video Music Awards Photo: WireImage It seems that Justin Bieber can’t so much as step outside without inciting a riot of considerable magnitude, so it was to be expected that his performance at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards — supposedly a secret song-and-dance routine set outside the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles — would probably attract some attention. But VMA producers had no idea just how out-of-hand things would get — or how close VMA host Chelsea Handler would be to being mauled by Justin’s army of Beliebers as a result. It was all thanks to one harmless tweet by JB himself, as we learn in “VMAs Revealed,” a new behind-the-scenes special set to air this Saturday at noon ET on MTV. It all started before the VMAs, during Bieber’s rehearsals. Producers planned to have Handler exit the theater and take a spot at the front of the stage, holding a sign that read “Chelsea hearts Justin.” Everything was going swimmingly until an army of Bieber fanatics got wind of things. “Out on the Nokia Plaza, they were rehearsing Justin Bieber’s performance,” MTV News VP Ryan Kroft explains in “Revealed.” “[And] if you sort of stopped and paid attention, out comes Chelsea Handler in curlers.” Of course, on the night of the big show — after Bieber had tweeted about “free tickets to [his] VMA performance” — things changed. The Nokia Plaza was positively packed with screaming Bieber fans, who didn’t take kindly to Handler’s intrusion — and they let her know by crowding up against a barricade, nearly crushing her and sending all plans out the window. Producers never quite got a good shot of Handler and her sign — “I think you can see her sign bobbing around, you just can’t see her head. She should’ve worn the curlers,” Kroft said — but luckily, she escaped serious bodily harm. And the true Beliebers ended up being happy too: Not only did they get to see a once-in-a-lifetime performance from their idol, but Bieber would go on to win the VMA for Best New Artist later that night. For more backstage stories from the 2010 VMAs — like Rihanna’s wig mishap , Lady Gaga’s unforgettable meat dress and 30 Seconds to Mars’ unconventional white-carpet arrival — tune in to “VMAs Revealed” this Saturday at noon ET on MTV. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Colbie Caillat Recalls Breaking Dad’s Grammy On ‘When I Was 17’

The season premiere of ‘When I Was 17,’ also featuring Bow Wow and Christopher Mintz-Passe, airs Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. By Nuzhat Naoreen Colbie Caillat on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV Colbie Caillat knows the value of a Grammy: The singer/songwriter already has two to her name. But back when she was 17 years old, an out-of-control house party nearly destroyed one of her father’s own coveted awards. On the season premiere of “When I Was 17,” airing this Saturday at 11 a.m. ET, Caillat tells all about that night. “When I was 17, we used to have parties at my parents’ house all the time. This one time, hundreds and hundreds of people showed up at my house, and we thought it was really cool because it was like, ‘Oh my god, all these people came!’ ” Caillat recalls. The more people piled in though, the more difficult it became to keep the party under control. “Everyone was drinking way too much, and a huge fight broke out. It was just one of those crazy parties,” she says. “Different schools, no one got along. And this one guy jumped on my parents’ pool table and jumped off of it to tackle this other guy, which then they hit into the wall, and there was blood on the wall. And alcohol was spit on our pool table, the front door got broken, stuff got stolen.” The front door wasn’t the only thing that got broken though. “The worst part about it is that my dad’s Grammy was up above our TV, and during the party, it got knocked over and it fell on the ground and broke in half,” Caillat recalls. So, how did Caillat’s father react after he learned his trophy had been split in two? Tune into the premiere of “When I Was 17” to find out. “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Bow Wow, Christopher Mintz-Passe and Colbie Caillat — premieres Saturday at 11 a.m. ET on MTV. For Discussion: Rick Perry Of Texas Enters Presidential Race Throwing Major Shade At Obama, Tim Pawlenty Drops Out

One GOPer is out and another one is in…. Texas Governor Rick Perry announced his bid for the 2012 Republican nomination in South Carolina on Saturday with a speech grounded in attacks on President Obama for “downgrading” America. “It’s time to get America working again,” Perry told 700 conservative activists packed into at Charleston hotel ballroom. “Page one of any economic plan to get American working is to give a pink slip to the current residents in the White House.” In South Carolina, host to the nation’s third presidential primary, Perry vowed to apply what has worked in Texas during his ten years as governor to Washington – balancing the budget and cutting government spending. “America is not broken, Washington, D.C., is broken,” Perry said. CBSNews.com special report: Campaign 2012 Perry enters the race as a serious contender for the nomination, one with the potential to combine establishment support (and the strong fundraising that comes with it) with the backing of social and fiscal conservatives. Stylistically reminiscent of his predecessor as Texas governor who won the presidency – George W. Bush – Perry’s calling card is Texas’ strong record of job creation: 40 percent of the nation’s new jobs since June 2009 are in Texas. The state’s unemployment rate is about one-point below the national rate of 9.1-percent, and 25 states’ are lower. “One in six work-eligible Americans cannot find a full-time job — that is not a recovery, that is an economic disaster,” Perry said. While Perry spent some of his speech discussing his own record, he spent most of his time attacking the current White House occupant. He criticized Mr. Obama’s “unbridled fixation” on spending and suggested the president’s “big spending, big government policies” have “prolonged our national misery, not alleviated it.” “Recovery is a meaningless word if the bank has foreclosed on your home, if you’re underwater on your mortgage, or if you are up to the max on your credit card debt,” he added. “Mister President, let us tell you something: You cannot win the future buy selling America off to foreign creditors. We cannot afford four more years of this rudderless leadership.” And poor little Tim Pawlenty couldn’t stand the heat, so he’s getting outta the kitchen! Former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty is dropping out of the presidential race, sources told CBS News on Sunday. According to a campaign source, Pawlenty told supporters on a conference call Sunday morning that he would announce his withdrawal from the race on ABC’s “This Week” after a disappointing third place finish at Saturday’s Ames straw poll in Ames, Iowa. “We needed to get some lift to continue on and have a pathway forward,” Pawlenty said, according to ABC. “That didn’t happen, so I’m announcing this morning on your show that I’m going to be ending my campaign for president.” The straw poll was a crucial test for Pawlenty, who was initially expected to be a strong challenger to putative Republican frontrunner Mitt Romney. But his campaign failed to catch fire, with polls indicating that his support never moved out of the single digits. Pawlenty bussed in supporters to the straw poll who signed a pledge to vote for him, offering them free “Famous Dave’s” barbecue and green Pawlenty t-shirts with the number twelve on the back. In a speech, he condemned President Obama as having “no clue” what America needs and saying he needs to “get the government off our backs.” And while the former governor had acknowledged that Saturday’s contest was a crucial for his campaign, he indicated to supporters on Saturday night that he would be staying in the race despite his third-place finish. “We made progress in moving from the back of the pack into a competitive position for the caucuses, but we have a lot more work to do. This is a long process to restore America — we are just beginning and I’m looking forward to a great campaign,” he said in a statement. On Sunday, however, he changed course. “I thought I would have made a great president, but obviously that pathway isn’t there,” Pawlenty said, according to the Associated Press. “I do believe we’re going to have a very good candidate who is going to beat Barack Obama.” Discuss… Source 1 , Source 2
