Noel Gallagher Soars With High Flying Birds

Former Oasis songwriter’s solo debut has earned rave reviews, none of which impress him all that much. By James Montgomery Noel Gallagher Photo: MTV News Given all the recent coverage of his run-in with Katie Holmes and various, life-altering ways , you may be unaware that Noel Gallagher , late of Oasis , has just released his first proper solo album, a rock-solid collection of tunes that run the gamut from psych-tinged burners (“[I Wanna Live in a Dream in My] Record Machine”) to straight-ahead churners (“Everybody’s on the Run”), with stops at just about every point in between. He’s called the disc Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, a nod to both the first Fleetwood Mac album and a Jefferson Airplane song of (roughly) the same name, and so far, things are soaring. It’s been greeted with glowing reviews, most of which seem to harp on the fact that the album represents “his best tunes in 15 years.” Of course, in typical Gallagher fashion, he’s not paying attention to any of it. “I didn’t read any of the reviews and think, ‘Well, these people think I’ve been writing crap songs for the last 15 years.’ I don’t think of things like that,” he told MTV News. “When I’m in the studio, I’m literally taking it song by song and then, you know, you get to the end of it. I got to say though, during the mixing of it, as each track was being finished, I was thinking, ‘This does sound really good. …’ “But I wouldn’t like to compare it to anything Oasis did, because that’s not fair,” he continued. “We were a band and I was writing songs for someone else to sing, so you can’t really compare the two. It’s just a good record, what can I say?” Humility was never his strong suit. Neither, apparently, was guitar playing. Because even though he slung the ax loud and often in Oasis, he never really considered himself to be a guitar player . Which is why, on High Flying Birds, he limited the showing off — there are, by unofficial count, just two solos on the whole album — and focused instead on doing what he loves best: writing killer tunes. “I guess when guitarists make solo records, there’s usually a lot of showing off. But I’ve been trying to convince for 20 years that I’m not a guitarist, I’m a songwriter. I played lead guitar in the band because everybody else, in the early days, was useless, so that kind of fell to me,” he laughed. “But it’s not something I ever thought I would put myself up there with John Squire or Johnny Marr or all those great British guitarists, that’s not my thing. My thing was songwriting. I only noticed [the lack of solos] when a friend of mine was listening to the finished version, and it got to track six and he went, ‘You know, that’s the first guitar solo,’ and I was like, ‘Wow, someone’s got an easy gig, doesn’t he?’ ” And since there’s not going to be an Oasis reunion in the cards anytime soon, Gallagher is focused on promoting Birds both here and abroad. He’s playing on just about every continent over the next six months and seems quite content to be doing nothing else. Especially attempting to figure out the machinations of the music industry of 2011 … a plan he abandoned long ago, thanks in no small part to his daughter. “She is into music, she’s never mentioned Justin Bieber to me … Lady Gaga’s her thing, and Rihanna and, is it, Miley Cyrus? All that kind of thing,” he said. “It’s kind of a rule, she’s got to like Oasis and her old fella, so she’s into that side of it. But her teenage rock years will come [and], no doubt, she’ll be into f—ing Nickelback as well.” Related Videos MTV News Extended Play: Noel Gallagher

Taylor Lautner On Honeymoon Scene: ‘It’s About Time’

‘I’ve seen Edward and Bella go through a lot so far, so I feel like I was kind of ready to see this,’ Lautner tells MTV News. By Tiffany Miles, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner in “Breaking Dawn, Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment Of all the buzz surrounding this week’s hugely anticipated release of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” the vast majority of fan rumblings and excitement have been about and for one scene and one scene only: the “honeymoon scene,” a.k.a. Bella and Edward’s sex scene. It’s a different story for the actors involved, specifically for Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart , who have talked at length about how awkward filming the scene was. Their co-stars seem to be onboard with their enthusiasm for the “action,” however. When MTV News caught up with Taylor Lautner recently, he said he was ready for it. “I’ve seen Edward and Bella go through a lot so far, so I feel like I was kind of ready to see this,” Lautner said. “I think everybody will feel the same way. We’ve seen Edward and Bella in their relationship grow so much that it’s about time.” “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer told us at the “Breaking Dawn” premiere that the scene in the movie gives fans a lot more to see and think about than she did in the book. “I think it’s romantic, and it does give you more than the book does,” Meyer said. “I know some of the sites call it, instead of ‘fade to black,’ ‘fade to sad.’ They’d love to see more. I think this gives them that,” she said. “It gives them a romantic peek into the honeymoon. We don’t want to see too much.” Although everyone seems to be excited to see the honeymoon scene, Lautner still isn’t sure that Bella made the right decision when she chose Edward over his character, Jacob Black. When asked if he thought Bella made the wrong call, he jokingly said, “You know, I go back and forth with that one [question] still.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Breaking Dawn’ Birth ‘Emotional’ For Stephenie Meyer

‘Twilight’ author also raves to MTV News about wedding and honeymoon — and reveals whether she’ll write more about Bella and Edward. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Stephenie Meyer Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images Of all the lovely and talented stars we feature in our exhaustive efforts to cover anything and everything in the world of “Twilight,” it’s a rare treat to talk to the woman responsible for it all: author-turned-producer Stephenie Meyer. MTV News was lucky enough to catch up with the lady, the myth, the legend during our “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” premiere live stream Monday night (November 14), when we covered hot topics such as the wedding and honeymoon, the birth scene and whether Meyer will ever write another “Twilight”-themed story or book. “With the wedding, I worked pretty closely with [screenwriter] Melissa [Rosenberg],” Meyer said. “We talked about it, how it needed to be like a really beautiful traditional ceremony, nothing outlandish, just simple and old-fashioned and romantic, and then [director] Bill [Condon] brought in the vision of what it should look like, and the production designer just made such a gorgeous midsummer night’s dream for us. And then the final element was Kristen [Stewart] in the wedding dress. She was so gorgeous, she was unbelievable.” Fun fact about the wedding scene: Meyer has a cameo, which she assured us was not her idea. “Bill really wanted those of us who’d been there from the beginning [in the scene],” she said. “It was nice to be at Bella’s wedding; that was great. Being on camera — not so much.” Moving right along to arguably the film’s most-anticipated scene: the honeymoon, which Meyer said she wanted all along to be romantic above everything else. “I think it’s romantic, and it does give you more than the book does. I know some of the sites call it, instead of ‘fade to black,’ ‘fade to sad.’ they’d love to see more. I think this gives them that,” she said. “It gives them a romantic peek into the honeymoon. We don’t want to see too much.” Another scene in which the filmmakers incorporated a less-is-more approach was during the very intense birth scene, which Meyer said was so emotional that people shed a bunch of tears during filming. “It was so emotional. It wasn’t like a horror movie or anything. It has those elements, but it really brought out that feeling of losing the person that means the most to you. We were getting teary on set, which doesn’t happen very much after a long day of shooting,” she said. “That moment really was strong.” And finally, the question on all “Twilight” fans’ minds all the time: After the final movie opens and things are all said and done, will Meyer return to her characters and continue the story? “I don’t know,” she said. “Every now and then I tinker around with old manuscripts, because I can’t leave them alone even though it’s too late and they’re printed. There are little things. I’ve been recently doing comedies and stuff; it’s a nice change. Maybe it will cleanse the palate and I’ll get back to it.” So once the palate is cleansed, might she consider publishing the much-discussed, fan-pined-for book from Edward’s perspective, “Midnight Sun”? “Maybe. I get that [question] a lot,” Meyer said. “My mother [asks] every day. She would love for me to do that. I know a lot of people will love that. I have to get to a place where I can write it.” Stick with MTV News as we roll out even more from our “Breaking Dawn” premiere live stream! ‘Breaking Dawn’ Sex Scene Is ‘All Close-Ups,’ Kristen Stewart Says

‘It’s not a beginning-to-end sex scene; it’s memories,’ she tells MTV News. By Kara Warner with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart in “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment There is so much hype surrounding the “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” sex scene between Edward Cullen and Bella Swan that we probably won’t ever be able to stop writing about it. The fans demand it! Lucky for us, the stars in question keep talking about it as well, so we’re all able to revel in the warm romantic (after?) glow for a little while longer. When MTV News caught up with Kristen Stewart recently, we asked what her reaction was when she finally saw the intense scene play out on the big screen. “I think, for me, it really reflects what I felt when I was reading the book,” Stewart said. “It’s funny, because it’s not in the book. It’s totally just what you imagine in between those chapters, but without it, because you imagine it, it leads you to — it picks up right after, and then sort of really indulges in memory. And so I think that’s how you see it. It’s not a beginning-to-end sex scene; it’s memories, it’s nice. So because of that, I never really got to shoot, we didn’t shoot a sex scene; it was all close-ups and such.” Stewart’s steamy scene partner Robert Pattinson had a little more fun talking about the filming of their scene, in that he was happy to fulfill fans’ sexual fantasies with his acting. “That’s the one time where I have felt kind of like the coolest person,” Pattinson said of filming the scene. “[I thought] this is easy! I can fulfill people’s sexual fantasy expectations without even thinking about it, piece of cake. That isn’t acting,” he joked. “The only thing [that was difficult] is the vanity aspect,” Pattinson continued. “Taylor [Lautner] just ruined the whole series for me. As soon as he buffed up, I went, ‘Well, I’m throwing in the towel’ on ‘New Moon.’ ” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Breaking Dawn’ Is ‘Extreme,’ Robert Pattinson Says

‘There’s definitely a version of this movie that’s a hard-R rating, possibly even NC-17,’ he says during ‘MTV First.’ By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson Photo: MTV News “Breaking Dawn” and its infamous birth scene have become synonymous at this point, and it’s almost impossible to discuss the book or the upcoming film without touching on it. Naturally, it was a point of conversation during “MTV First: Breaking Dawn” with Kristen Stewart , Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner . After an exclusive clip from the film premiered on MTV, the cast took a chance to answer some fan questions, and it wasn’t long before the birth scene came up in conversation. For Pattinson in particular, filming the scene was a mixed bag. He told MTV News’ Josh Horowitz that filming was “equal parts [silly and bizarre]. There were some moments that were so incredibly extreme, and there’s definitely a version of this movie that’s a hard-R rating, possibly even NC-17.” Stewart agreed and touched on recent news reports that an early cut of the film received an R rating . “I think it’s been talked about. We got an R rating for a few things that needed to be toned down, so we are at the cusp,” Stewart said. “We really did push it as far as it goes.” Filming “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” wasn’t all gruesome scenes of vampire children bursting out of the womb. Pattinson said that despite the seriousness of some scenes, others had him busting a gut with laughter. “There were some scenes that were some of the funniest things I’ve had to do in this entire series, like, crying with laughter,” Pattinson said. Lautner had a scene of his own that, while not quite as intense as the birth scene, definitely had an effect on the actor. When Horowitz asked about the imprinting scene between Jacob and Renesmee, Lautner offered a quick “Don’t even go there,” and went on to describe the scene as difficult. “I’m really happy with how it turned out, but on the day, it was tough. I literally had an X on a wall, and I had to look at this X and imprint,” Lautner said. Lindsay Lohan Issues Statement, Refuses to Be Made an Example Of

Lindsay Lohan is sick of the lies dammit. Not long after various sources reported that the professional trainwreck had been given the boot from her community service program and gotten in trouble for a failure to attend court-mandated therapy sessions, Lindsay took to Twitter and defended her record, writing: “I am not to be made an example of anymore.” She continued: “I am working hard and fulfilling my obligations every single day, to the court as well as myself. If I travel, its for work and its been approved. As is anything I do when I leave the state. “I’d appreciate it if people will just let me do what is asked of me, so that I can get my life back. Please ignore the reports which have no truth to them. Thank you.” Lohan will plead her case to a judge next week during a status hearing. Still no word, though, on what the heck is going on with her teeth these days . [Photo: WENN.com]
