According to reports, the UNC Charlotte campus is currently on lockdown after gunshots were heard near the Kennedy building. Per the Mecklenburg Emergency Medical Services Agency, two people were found dead at the scene while two others have suffered life threatening injuries. Two others have suffered gunshot wounds but are expected to survive. The suspect is currently in custody, reportedly a student according to WSOC . “Shots reported near Kennedy. Run, Hide, Fight. Secure yourself immediately,” the university said in an alert, referring to the school’s Kennedy building on campus. Over the weekend, Winfrey took three of her mentees, who have spent most of their lives under her tutelage as students at her Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa. “I’ve known these girls since they were 12 and 13 coming to my school. Graduating from college. Grad school. Now our first wedding. Looking for the perfect dress,” Winfrey wrote under a caption of the photo of herself with the girls. The photo also shows the young woman holding her dream dress, which according to the Daily Mail, costs $100,000. Winfrey took the trio on a shopping trip at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills and enjoyed the whole story to themselves, the outlet reports. As we’ve seen before Oprah has a soft place in her heart for the girls who have passed through the program at her Leadership Academy. In 2015, a group of the students attended a performance of The Color Purple with Winfrey, and also enjoyed a Mac and Clinique class, along with a dinner at the exclusive Rainbow Room. A teen from Georgia is turning his tragedy into triumph and is living proof that with hard work and perseverance it’s possible to beat the odds. After winning a track meet, he got into a car with a group of friends and the driver fell asleep at the wheel. The vehicle went off the road and crashed. Lawson suffered serious injuries including damage done to his head, abdomen, and spinal cord. He woke up in the hospital nearly a month after the accident occurred. “It was a huge depressing moment. I thought maybe this is the last time I’ll be able to run again, my career is over. I was wondering if the coaches would still be interested in me even if I recover in due time,” he told the news outlet. “Looking at the four walls of the hospital room, you become depressed really quickly.” Although it took a while for Lawson to come to terms with what had happened, he ultimately decided he wouldn’t let his circumstances defeat him. He was motivated to get back on the track. He went through a rigorous rehabilitation program at the Shepherd Center based in Atlanta. Day after day Lawson went hard with his strength training so that he wouldn’t have to be confined to a wheelchair. He recently got back on the track at his high school with a walker and was able to walk 200 meters in 30 minutes. He says that the accident has inspired him to focus on the positive aspects of life. “Every day isn’t a sunny day. For a handful C-list stars and their offspring, the college admissions bribery scandal is a nightmare from which they just can’t awaken. As you’ve likely heard by now, Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman were among those ensnared by the FBI investigation dubbed Operation Varsity Blues. Since then, the actresses’ fates have diverged in a number of interesting ways. Huffman expressed what seemed like genuine remorse and accepted a plea deal. Loughlin — who stands accused of much more egregious crimes — opted not to accept a plea and will instead do battle with prosecutors in a proper trial. As a result, legal experts predict that Loughlin will almost certainly go to prison . And yet, insiders say the actress best known for portraying Aunt Becky on Full House is unfazed and remains convinced that she’ll beat the case. Here’s hoping Loughlin’s daughter, Olivia Jade Giannulli, inherited her mother’s unflappable nature because there’s reason to believe the influencer and aspiring cosmetics mogul is being investigated by the FBI. Loughlin allegedly doled out bribes and conned admissions boards on behalf of both of her daughter so that they would be accepted to USC as members of the school’s crew team. (Even though neither of them had ever rowed crew.) The Daily Mail is now reporting that one of Loughlin’s daughters is under federal investigation. Insiders claim the investigation was confirmed by letter the FBI sent to the admissions board at USC informing them that one of their students may soon face criminal charges. It’s currently unclear which daughter is being investigated, but many have assumed it’s Olivia who might soon be in trouble, as she’s been one of this scandal’s most outspoken and high-profile figures from the beginning. “It is a not-so-veiled threat,” said one source who claims to have seen the letter. “[The US Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts] is making it pretty clear that they have evidence that very strongly suggests she knew of the illegal plot.” Amazingly, the fact that her daughter might soon be brought up on charges was not enough to get Loughlin to accept a plea deal. Olivia has already dropped out of USC , allegedly for fear of being bullied as a result of the scandal. She has also lost endorsement deals with Sephora and several other cosmetics and beauty companies. Now, it looks as though her situation is soon to go from bad to worse.
I t’s been nearly a year since NBA star LeBron James opened the I Promise School in his hometown of Akron, Ohio and it has proven to be nothing short of impactful in the lives of underserved children. Results from Measures of Academic Progress testing showed that 90 percent of students met or surpassed expectations in math and reading, their test scores increased at a higher rate than nearly 100 other schools, and students who were reading below grade level are now within or above the 25th percentile. Furthermore, fourth-graders went from the second to 30th percentile in math and third-graders made improvement in that area as well going from the first to the 18th percentile. James is happy to witness the progress the students have made and hopes that it brings attention to the need for quality education in underserved communities. “These kids are doing an unbelievable job—better than we all expected,” he said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “When we first started, people knew I was opening a school for kids. Now people are going to really understand the lack of education they had before they came to our school. People are going to finally understand what goes on behind our doors.” The I Promise School has grown to become a staple in the community. Aside from enriching the lives of children through education, it provides resources for low-income families; including everything from a food pantry to career support. The school will launch summer camps surrounding STEM education within the next few months and in 2021 students will have the opportunity to further their education at the University of Akron free of tuition. Source: Bill Ross / Getty Man Pushes Child From Third Floor Balcony A 24-year old Man is currently in custody due to what police are calling the “Mall Of America incident.” According to reports, a 5-year-old child suffered significant injuries when a man either threw or pushed him from the third floor of the Mall of America in Bloomington, MN. Eyewitnesses told police Chief Jeff Potts that the person suspected of pushing or throwing the child “took off running immediately after the incident.” Potts told reporters : “At this time, we do not believe that there is a relationship between the child or the family of the child. The child did suffer significant injuries. [He] has been transported to the hospital and has been receiving care. [We] believe this to be an isolated incident.” The Bloomington Police Department is investigating an incident at the Mall of America today. A five-year-old child suffered injuries and is at the hospital now. A press conference will happen outside the north entrance at 12:15 PM next to the security vehicle. Source: Jim McIsaac / Getty Students At LeBron’s School Are Improving Their Test Scores In the very short time since LeBron James opened his I Promise School in his home state of Ohio, the students there have already exceeded expectations. According to a new report from the New York Times , children at the school have seen both their math and their reading scores increase since it opened in July of 2018. After participating in the Measures of Academic Progress assessment, 216 of 240 students were found to have met or exceeded their expected growth at the mid-year mark. When they first came into the school, reading comprehension scores for third and fourth grade students were consistently in the lowest percentile. Today, third graders have advanced all the way to the 9th percentile, while fourth graders rose to the 16th. In math, third graders were in the first percentile and have since jumped to 18th. Fourth graders went to the 30th percentile after being in the second. “These kids are doing an unbelievable job, better than we all expected,” James told the Times of the students and their progress. “When we first started, people knew I was opening a school for kids. Now people are going to really understand the lack of education they had before they came to our school. The school was built to serve at-risk children, but it also offers parents opportunities, like the ability to finish high school, even promising free tuition to the University of Akron upon graduation. Beyond those already impressive promises, students also receive free breakfast, lunch and snacks, as well as a free bike, according to Time . The school’s first year is set to wrap up in May and STEM-based camps will be offered throughout the summer. The school is expected to serve all grades from first to eighth within the next four years. I Promise’s inaugural students are now preparing to take the state’s standardized tests with results expected in the summer.
