REVIEW: 21 Jump Street Is Half Brilliant, Half a Mess, But Tatum and Hill Shine

There’s a peculiar kind of pleasure to be found in watching Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, in 21 Jump Street , horsing around and generally acting like doofuses for our amusement. As rookie cops assigned to patrol — by bicycle — a city park, they’re more than ready to prove their tough-guy status: When they spot a bunch of biker guys experiencing the joys of cannabis beneath a tree, they strut toward the gang in their shorts and bike helmets, but not before flipping their kickstands down with a mighty thwack . Later, Hill says a fervent prayer in the Catholic church that serves as headquarters for the undercover unit to which the duo has been assigned, its sign outside reading, in mistranslated Korean, “Aroma of Christ Church.” Hill kneels in front of the crucifix, beginning his urgent plea with the words, “Hey, Korean Jesus…” That irreverent riff captures the tone of the whole picture — it’s a ramshackle thing, a goof on the idea that anyone might actually care about a movie based on an old TV show, or that anyone might actually care about a movie at all. For the first half, at least, 21 Jump Street gives us reason to care. In recent years, the mania for turning old TV shows into movies has waned — a good thing, particularly given the ungodly mess known as The Green Hornet . Still, movies inspired by TV shows are coming back with a tiny vengeance — we have Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows , to name just one, to look forward to later this spring. And for now, 21 Jump Street is a small puff of fresh air simply because it’s not, like umpteen other releases coming down the pike, based on a comic-book series. Instead, its inspiration is a show that made its debut on the then-fledgling Fox Network in 1987 (and also helped launch the career of Johnny Depp, long before he became buried under Burton’s makeup or obscured by pirate-y facial hair), although this 21 Jump Street has its own distinct, goofy flavor. The movie opens in 2005, when Schmidt (Hill) and Jenko (Tatum) are still high school students. Schmidt is the smart, shlubby, unpopular one — he’s an Eminem nut with a crop of bottle-blond hair, which could be sort of cool if his braces didn’t ruin the whole effect. Jenko is the dumb, sleepy-eyed jock with lank, shaggy hair. When the school principal informs him that he can’t go to the prom and that it’s “time to pay the piper,” he squints at her dimly and murmurs, “I should pay who?” Fast-forward a few years, and these two have become first police academy buddies (Jenko, recognizing he could use some help in the smarts department, latches onto Schmidt) and then rookie officers. After botching that aforementioned pot bust, the two are reassigned to an undercover unit — headed by a hard-ass, and very funny, Ice Cube — in which their job is to pose as teenagers and find the source of a drug that’s sweeping the local high school. 21 Jump Street is at its best when directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller — the guys behind the much-loved 2009 Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs — just let Hill and Tatum run with the patent ridiculousness of the setup. (The script is by Michael Bacall, from a story by Bacall and Hill.) Hill is reasonably funny and relaxed here; even when he’s playing the loser-sadsack, he radiates more confidence than he has in the past, instead of just relying on shtick. He still has that unassuming, “Who, me?” demeanor, but he’s more fully in control of it than ever before. And Tatum, who has already proved to be a marvelous dramatic actor even in throwaway pictures like Dear John (he also recently starred in the megahit The Vow ), has the kind of comic timing that’s deceptively laid-back and sharp at the same time. His Jenko comes off as an easygoing galoot, which makes the idiot-savant observations he comes up with that much funnier. Schmidt, upon his return to high school, notes that all the things that made him uncool in his own high-school days (caring about the environment, being tolerant) have now become hip. Jenko agrees, and he doesn’t like it, looking for a place to lay the blame: “I know the cause. It’s Glee ,” he says definitively, like a Sherlock Holmes who’s spent too much time parked in front of the tube. Together Hill and Tatum are so much fun to watch that it’s disappointing when the story around them becomes overly cluttered and convoluted. To say 21 Jump Street loses the plot isn’t quite accurate: It’s a pretty loose-limbed affair from the get-go. But Lord and Miller insist on turning it into an action film, complete with elaborate car chases and shootouts that betray the spirit of silliness they laid out at the beginning. 21 Jump Street falters when it becomes too ambitious. Its finest moments — as when Schmidt and Jenko sternly forbid a bratty kid from feeding ducks in the park, which causes him to immediately (what else?) feed the ducks — are the ones that feel unplanned and tossed-off. In those moments, 21 Jump Street shows a kind of wayward, pigeon-toed brilliance. Maybe that particular brand of half-assed genius is too evanescent to survive a whole movie. Then again, half an ass is better than none. Follow Stephanie Zacharek on Twitter . Follow Movieline on Twitter .

My names Valerie and I’m 16 years old, I live in Las…

My names Valerie and I’m 16 years old, I live in Las Vegas, Nevada . My dream has always been to meet Justin or at least see him up close because I had been to his concert here in Vegas, but it’s not the same feeling as if you see him up close or meet him. The day he went on Ellen in November to tell Whitney Elementary that he would donate money to them and perform for them , it was like an ‘omg’ moment. I wanted to go, but one problem. I’m not in Elementary school. I’m a sophomore in Highschool. I told my friend about it and she’s a huge Belieber as well, so we decided that somehow we would get to see Justin that day. I didn’t believe it, but I told myself in order to feel good. I talked to some friends who had gone to Whitney when they were younger and they said they might be able to get me in, but that didn’t work out. So my friend and I kind of started loosing hope and just starting to realize we weren’t going to see Justin at all. We forgot about it until at our local radio station they started talking about how Justin was coming and he was going to perform . They mentioned them hosting a Meet & Greet and they would be giving out tickets daily, blah blah blah. I freaked out, my friend and I called day and night. We only had a week to do this and win those tickets. Ends up we didn’t win them. It’s Thursday night and we’re devastated, so she calls me and tells me, “We’re going. We’re not giving up. I’ll get my dad to drive us tomorrow, but we have to ditch school and not get caught”. I was ready for it. The next day December 16th, 2011 I woke up thinking I could meet Justin today. I wasn’t getting my hopes up though. We went to school but towards the middle, we ditched. We got to Whitney Elementary and they had bunch of security. We tried several times to sneak into the school but we stopped once the police told us we could end up tased, lol. Anyways, we waited and waited until finally Justin arrived in these really nice sleek black cars. He got out with Alfredo and waved to us. There weren’t that many girls yet. But he ended up going in Ellen’s Swaggin’ Waggin’ that was parked outside Whitney. He got changed and while this was happening, Scooter and Kenny were outside waiting for him. We started yelling and screaming so they would come over and they did. They happily came and signed autographs, gave hugs and just talked to us . Kenny signed my jacket and Scooter took a picture with me & my friend. By this time I was already so happy. I just can’t even explain it. I hugged Kenny and told him thank you. I told Scooter thank you. When they were about to leave, we asked him if Justin would come talk to us and he smiled and said “I’ll get him to come here. He wants to anyways” I was like akdfjaljklsjfklasdf. We waited another while after this and finally Justin came out of Ellen’s bus. By now there was a lot more girls waiting for him including me. Everyone was going crazy, many were crying uncontrollably, others just screaming and jumping up and down. He came towards us and waved, he kept smiling and laughing. I couldn’t believe how close I was to him. He moved down the row of girls, and finally he got so close. I can’t describe what I was feeling. He looked at me and my friend and said Hi, he signed some autographs, and hung out for a few minutes, he tried to get to as many fans as possible. There was a lot and I’m just grateful for even being 3 ft of distance to him. By now he was in hurry cause he had to perform, so he left and said maybe he would come back, but he didn’t. My friend and I waited til the private concert was over and he came back out but didn’t get close to the fans he went back into the cars and drove away, but what I do and always will remember was him waving goodbye as he was driving out of the school. That day I went home knowing that I could die happily. My hero, inspiration, my everything had said hi to me and smiled. One smile, that’s all I asked for. I don’t think I’ll ever forget Dec.16, 2011. -princejdrew | tumblr  Originally posted here: My names Valerie and I’m 16 years old, I live in Las…

Hey everybody. My name is Angeliesse and I am 15 years old. Let me just start off by saying that I never thought that I would be able to get a picture with Justin. I had seen him at many different events before, but a picture with him just seemed impossible. To everyone who is losing hope about getting to meet Justin, DON’T. You HAVE to believe because it CAN happen.  Okay, so mybieberexperience started on February 12, 2012 when I had found out that Justin was in NYC . I was a little scared about going to see him because the last time I had went to one of his events, I got trampled on and I now need surgery on my back. I thought to myself, “It’s worth it if you get to see Justin” so  I quickly became determined to see him. The next day my friends and I decided not to go to school and we went to Justin’s hotel. We got to the hotel at around 8am and an hour and a half later, we saw Justin’s Escalade come up and soon after Justin and Selena were walking out of the hotel. Selena quickly went into the car, but I was able to get a picture with Justin along with two other people. Before I got my picture, I said Hi to Moshe, who was holding Justin’s laptop that said ‘swag’ in big letters on the back of it . I told Justin I liked his laptop and he just smiled. Justin was in a bit of a rush so after I got my picture with him, he had to go into the car. While he was in the car, this guy kept on banging on the window. Justin opened the door and said, “Stop it!” , but the guy kept on annoying him, so Justin once again opened the door and said, “Can you just stop it!” This annoying dude did not respect any of Justin’s wishes so finally Justin opened the door again and said, “Go away!” Everyone knew that this guy was making Justin mad, so my friend Emily decided to make the guy stop by pushing him and said, “JUSTIN SAID STOP, ALRIGHT!” Hopefully Justin saw because the guy actually stopped after that. What can I say? BELIEBERS GO HARD! My friend Reiko, Emily and Ryan hadn’t gotten their picture, and I wanted to see Justin again so I decided to stay outside with them for the rest of the day. While we were waiting for Justin, Moshe came out, and he was SO CUTE! We asked him where Justin was and he said, “Justin is working” with his cute little accent. At 1 o’clock, Allison came out of a car, and began to walk her dog , we all noticed her and it was kind of funny because she looked a little scared of us at first, but we didn’t want to bother her, so we just said was Hi and then I also said that her dog was cute and she said Thank You. At around 2:30, we saw Justin’s car come and Justin came out, but he was on the phone and wasn’t able to take pictures with any of us but he said, “I’ll be out later”. At 3:30 we saw Kenny who was SUCH a sweetie pie! I asked him for a picture and he put his arm around me while my friend Reiko took the picture. Afterwards I said, “Kenny! You smell so good!” and he mouthed ‘thank you’ to me but he couldn’t really talk since he had his mouth wired (I assumed it was because of his surgery). At around 4 Moshe came out of Justin’s car with a box of pizza. Throughout the entire day we had all been arguing about how to pronounce his name, so I asked him, “Moshe! Can you just make a clarification here?! How do you pronounce your name?!” and he laughed and said, “You pronounce it Mo-she” and I said thanks and he went inside. At 4:30 Justin came out. I tried to get a second picture with him but I wasn’t able to get one because people were crowding him, and he even asked everyone to step back he said, “Can everyone please just step back. I’m claustrophobic”. Everyone moved back, and many girls were able to get their pictures. When he was done, he was rushed into his car. I quickly went up to the window of the car and put my hand up and started waiving. Justin who was now on the other side of the car, came to the side I was on, and put his hand to my hand and smiled. My heart melted. Later that day Justin also tweeted about the fans he had met that day, and just knowing that he was talking about me and my friends made me FREAK OUT.  I did all of this with a back in need of surgery, and when I got home that day I was in so much pain, but thinking about how Justin looked at me, and how close I was to him made me feel better because this was literally the most happiest moments of my life, and was worth it all to me. For people who say Justin is rude to his fans, he is NOT. He is the sweetest person in the world, and he really cares about every single one of his fans. I love you Justin, thanks for everything, and please pray for my back!  Thanks, Angeliesse   @JBswag_Angel More: Hey everybody. Supposed Expose Movie Obama College Years Turns Out Dud! [Video]

SMH@This movie maker: Andrew Breitbart’s promised video of Barack Obama’s college days at Harvard University was released in full on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show on Wednesday night—and unlike the late conservative provocateur’s other video hits, this one appears to be a bit of a dud. The video—which sent some conservatives into a frenzy when Breitbart told an audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) last month that he had the footage—shows Obama, then a Harvard law student, introducing former Harvard Law Professor Derrick Bell, who Breitbart.com editor-in-chief Joel Pollak called the “Jeremiah Wright of academia.” Harvard law professor Charles Ogletree had the footage from 1990 and is shown presenting it to an audience after the 2008 election. “We hid this during the 2008 campaign,” Ogletree can be heard saying. “I don’t care if they find it now.” Pollak and conservatives contend that the video is another example of Obama’s history of chumminess with radicals, and the proof of the left’s continuing efforts to cover it up. But as PBS’ Andrew Golis noted, “there’s nothing new about the clip or Obama’s role in the controversy at Harvard Law School.” “In 2008, as a part of our quadrennial election special The Choice 2008,” Golis wrote, “Frontline ran the same footage of the speech as a part of an exploration of Obama’s time at Harvard Law School, where he graduated in 1991. It’s been online at our site and on YouTube since then.” Golis added that Frontline obtained the footage from the archives of WGBH, PBS’ Boston affiliate. (More on the back story.) “Is that it?” Soledad O’Brien asked Pollak in an interview on Thursday morning. “What part of that was the bombshell? Because I missed it.” Pollack responded: “The bombshell is the revelation of the relationship between Obama and Derrick Bell … [Derrick Bell] passed away last year, but during his lifetime he developed a theory called critical race theory, which holds that the Civil Rights movement was a sham and that white supremacy is the order and it must be overthrown.” The interview quickly devolved into an argument over the definition of critical race theory, with Jay Thomas, a Sirius radio host and a panelist on O’Brien’s show, jumping into the fray. “Can I say something as a white person?” Thomas asked Pollak. “What are you frightened of? Are you frightened that some black people are going to do something to you? … What do you think Barack Obama’s going to do? Is there a secret black movement that’s going to start killing white people?” The conversation got worse from there. “I’m glad you played the racism card,” Pollak fired back. “You’ve accused me of being a racist. You’ve accused me of being afraid of black people. And it doesn’t deserve a response. But let me respond anyway. I’m not afraid black people are going to be violent and take over the country. What I’m pointing out is that there’s a pattern in Barack Obama’s associations with Derrick Bell, with Reverend Wright, and it carries over into his governance because his Justice Department won’t treat black civil rights violators the same way it treats white civil rights violators.” Journalists took to Twitter to poke fun at the controversy. “Breitbart’s CPAC speech = Lana Del Ray’s ‘Video Games’ video,” Slate’s Dave Weigel wrote on Twitter. “Actual Obama tape = Lana Del Ray on ‘SNL.’” On CNN, Pollak promised more footage and more bombshells from Breitbart’s archives. “This is the beginning of a vetting process that begins with Andrew Breitbart’s probe into Barack Obama’s time in Chicago and will continue,” he said. This video is comedy…

Rush Limbaugh Losing Sponsors Over Sandra Fluke "Slut" Remarks

Rush Limbaugh is literally paying for the comments he made this week about Sandra Fluke. On Thursday, the Georgetown University Law School student – who has been a vocal supporter of the Obama administration’s decision to require insurance companies, even those used by religiously-affiliated employers, to cover the cost of contraception – was denied a chance to speak at a House Oversight and Government Reform hearing on religious liberty and birth control. Rush Limbaugh Goes Off on Birth Control, Sandra Fluke She proceeded, though, to take part in a press conference in which Fluke told the story of a friend who was prescribed birth control to deal with ovarian cysts; could not afford the cost when school insurance refused to pay for it; and has since suffered grave medical consequences as a result. Fluke also said the price of birth control in general can be thousands a year. Limbaugh’s response? He referred to Fluke as a “slut” and a “prostitute” and added: “If we’re going to pay for your contraceptives and thus pay for you to have sex, we want something for it. We want you to post the videos online so we can all watch.” Limbaugh said that her speech made it clear “she’s having so much sex she can’t pay for it, and we should.” ( NOTE TO RUSH : That’s not how birth control works. You don’t pop a pill each time you have intercourse.) The issue has since taken on national prominence, with President Obama even calling Fluke and telling her her parents ought to be proud of her actions. And now the scandal has hit the Internet. The hashtag #BoycottRush has spread around Twitter and two Facebook pages calling for a boycott have garnered more than 18,000 and 6,000 Likes by this morning. Moreover, nine companies – including Legal Zoom, Citrix Success, Heart and Body Extract, AutoZone and Quicken Loans – have pulled ads from Limbaugh’s show. Where do you stand on this issue? Should Limbaugh have referred to the student as a “slut?

Excerpt from:

Hot 107.9′s Bullying Is Not Hot tour was recently featured on Good Day Atlanta ! While bullying is not new, it’s a disturbing trend that seems to have gotten much worse over the past few years. After the beating death of 18-year-old Bobby Tillman of Douglasville, community leaders decided to take action. Hot 107.9 felt it was important to join in the anti-bullying movement and launched our Bullying Is Not Hot tour, where we travel to different schools each week. “This is not it, life is so much bigger.” That’s the message Brandi Harvey is trying to send to some Brown Middle School students. Harvey is an anti-bullying advocate who also happens to be the daughter of comedian, author and radio personality Steve Harvey, who can be heard on our sister station Majic 107.5 / 97.5. “Bullying is an issue but the greater issue is the issues that we bring from our home life, our family life, our community. Why we make the choices that we make. Issues that are impacting our community,” said anti-bullying advocate Brandi Harvey. “We want them to understand that they’re actions have consequences and sometimes, you may not wake up from a fight. You may take someone else’s life. You may do something that causes you to be in a situation where you don’t come home,” said Hot 107.9′s Rashidah Jenkins.
