This Student Is Going Viral For A Presentation That Calls Out His Teacher For Using The N-Word

Continued here:

Source: Hill Street Studios / Getty This student is going viral for the absolutely perfect way he handled an awkward situation in the classroom, calling out his teacher for using the n-word twice during a presentation to his class. 23-year-old Maleek Eid is a marketing student at College of the Desert in Palm Desert. His English class was using Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” as an example for annotation when white his professor used the opportunity to drop the n-word word. “She said ‘they used to use words like…’ and she said the n-word,” Eid told BuzzFeed News about how the situation in the classroom went down.. “I didn’t say anything, I was actually so shocked.” He continued to explain that the same teacher used the word once again a week later in a similar context. “So I was like, that’s strike two, and strike one didn’t sit well with me already.” That’s when Maleek knew something had to be done–and he would have to be the one to do it. Eid–who is Palestinian–said the word didn’t seem to register as wrong or innapropriate with the rest of the students, none of whom are black. According to statistics via the 2010 census, less than 2% of Palm Desert residents are black. This upset student was already planning on reporting this incident to the school, but then, the professor assigned an opposing arguments assignment where students would have to tackle a controversial subject. With the memory of his teacher spewing the racial slur fresh in his mind, Maleek knew exactly what argument he was going to do his project on. That’s when Eid made a presentation countering arguments that many non-black people make in favor of using the n-word, calling out the professor in the process. He ended up recording parts of his presentation, including audio of his teacher’s reactions when she was called out for her contribution to continued use of the harmful word. THREAD: My professor used the N-word twice. So I called her out as my project. (Open thread for reaction) pic.twitter.com/gozbDx5tMq — Maleek Eid (@AbuYoshi) March 4, 2019 According to Maleek, the professor remained silent through the presentation, but defended herself and her use of the word thereafter. “I said the word because I wanted a response, I wanted someone to say, ‘that’s wrong to say that’ or ‘I take offense to that,’” the professor says. “Sometimes when we’re discussing things and you’re all sitting there going” — she made snoring sounds — “kind of thing, sometimes somebody’s gotta shake you up.” Eid was quick to shoot down that strategy, saying, “If the solution to getting your class to snap up is using the n-word then you need different strategies.” REACTION PART 1: My professor’s reaction to being called out for using the N-word twice. pic.twitter.com/ckwwM65GT2 — Maleek Eid (@AbuYoshi) March 4, 2019 The school responded to BuzzFeed News ‘ request for comment saying the following: “College of the Desert’s core values are based on inclusiveness and diversity in all forms, including academic freedom for both students and faculty,” said Pamela Hunter, executive director of institutional advancement for the college.. “It is the policy of the Desert Community College District to recognize the importance of academic freedom in pursuit of academic excellence for both faculty and students. We embrace diversity in all forms and the right of all people to have access to quality higher education in a safe and respectful learning environment.” Maleek and his professor continued to debate the subject following his presentation, talking about the situation both in the classroom and during a break one-on-one. According to Eid, his fellow students were unsupportive of his stance, either ignoring the situation or giggling, which he said it left him feeling quite depressed. But the response to his threat on Twitter has brought the opposite response, with most people praising Eid for standing up against his professor and sticking his neck out for what’s right. pic.twitter.com/2gbCjtJuPl — ig: @spillled (@spilllings) March 4, 2019 Your whole class is rude and insensitive and I’m glad you felt the need to not only call the professor out but also call them out on their laughing and chuckling. commendable actions — Kae (@OhItsJustKaelyn) March 5, 2019

Democrats Backpedal On Calls For Virginia’s Governor To Resign Over Blackface

Continued here:

J ust one month ago, there was widespread  demand for Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam to resign for having worn blackface. But now that storm seems to have passed, with Democrats backpedaling on their initial outrage. See Also: Ralph Northam Is Depending On Black Forgiveness, But Does He Deserve It? Virginia’s Democratic Attorney General Mark Herring , who is engulfed in his own blackface controversy , appears to have joined the bandwagon of politicians who are no longer demanding that Northam step down from office. Although he at first called for Northam’s resignation, Herring declined to say whether he still feels that way and even weighed in on Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax’s sexual assault scandal during an interview on WAMU’s Kojo Nnamdi Show. “The governor has made up his mind. He’s decided that he is going to continue on and is doing what he thinks he needs to do,” Herring said of Northam. When asked directly whether he’s suggesting that Northam should continue in office since he has refused to step down, Herring again declined to answer. On Feb. 1, 59-year-old Northam apologized for appearing in a photograph of a person dressed in blackface and another person in a Ku Klux Klan robe from his 1984 medical school yearbook. One day later, at a bizarre press conference, the governor denied that he was one of those people in the picture but admitted to applying black shoe polish to his face for a  Michael Jackson  dance competition. Virginia Sen. Mark Warner , a Democrat who was one of Northam’s early critics, is now talking about giving the governor a second chance. “If the governor is going to continue to stay, what he needs to do is get out and start to try to re-earn the trust of Virginians. When I called for his resignation along with [Sen.] Tim Kaine , we said the governor had lost the faith of the people of Virginia. He has a right to try to regain that faith,” Warner said Sunday on CNN ’s “State of the Union.” One week after lying to the American public that he wasn't in a photo with a man wearing blackface and another in a KKK robe, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam is still in office. #VirginiaBlackfaceScandal https://t.co/oUZ0A2tF1I — NewsOne (@newsone) February 8, 2019 It even appeared most Virginians have already forgiven Northam. Shortly after news of his blackface exploded, dozens of protesters assembled near the governor’s mansion in Richmond to demand his resignation. Today, there’s hardly a peep out of them. If a recent poll is accurate, Black Virginians are more willing than white residents are to forgive Northam. The  Washington Post-Schar School  poll that was released on Feb. 9 found that Virginia residents overall are split at 47 percent each on whether Northam should resign. However, 58 percent of Black Virginians want the governor to stay in office, compared with 37 percent of whites share their view. Herring, who reportedly has aspirations of running for governor, admitted on Feb. 6 that he, too, wore blackface while in college. His confession came after the first of two women accused Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax of sexual assault. While softening his rhetoric on Northam, Herring was more definitive about the allegations Fairfax was facing. “I think all parties want some type of impartial investigation. I think that’s what should happen,” Herring said. SEE ALSO: Ralph ‘Blackface’ Northam’s Wife Gives Black Children Raw Cotton During Mansion Tour How Is Ralph Northam Still Governor Of Virginia? Jesus Take The Wheel: Man Accused Of Sexually Assaulting 12-Year-Old Girl He Met on Tinder

Source: SOPA Images / Getty Los Angeles Man Accused Of Assaulting Girl He Met on Tinder Felony charges were filed against a 21-year-old man on Friday after he was accused of sexually assaulting a 12 year-old girl he met through Tinder . Sean Michael Rickard has been charged with three counts of lewd acts with a minor younger than 14 and one count each of distributing pornography to a minor with the intent to engage in sexual conduct and luring a child with the intent to commit a specified crime. Rickard is currently being held on $100,000 bail and is scheduled to be arraigned sometime on Friday in the Santa Ana jail courtroom. A charter school student in Santa Ana, California, saw the alleged victim get into a car with an adult man Wednesday and snapped a photo that she showed her mother, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said. “She told her mom she thought it was weird, so the mom did the right thing and contacted the school and the school did the right thing and contacted us,” Bertagna said. Police determined who the girl was and began investigating Rickard. The two met through the Tinder app about eight months ago, after the girl claimed to be 19 years old, according to Rickard. A few weeks ago, before they would meet in person, she confided that she was 12 “and he didn’t care,” Bertagna alleged. On Wednesday, Rickard allegedly drove the girl to a parking lot in Santa Ana, where they engaged in sexual acts. After police began investigating the Anaheim man, they communicated with the suspect through the girl’s phone, pretending to be the alleged victim. Rickard sent a video of himself masturbating, and when he agreed to a meeting, the officers were there to arrest him, according to Bertagna.

SMH: NYC Professor Says CUNY Illegally Seized & Lost Priceless Black History Documents & $12M Research

Source: georgeclerk / Getty He’s In The Middle Of A Complex Lawsuit With The Institution Of Higher Learning A Black political science professor, who was fired by the City University of New York, is currently tied up in a multi-million dollar federal lawsuit over lost Black history research. According to New York Daily News , Professor Joseph Wilson says decades of lectures, writings, correspondence, books and research, including some that can’t be replaced, was illegally seized by CUNY. The professor says years of research was boxed up and carted away by clueless CUNY security guards without warning in a series of warrant-less raids of his school offices. The drastic actions came after the celebrated professor was accused of enriching himself on the school’s dollar. Over the past several years since the the raids happened, Wilson has been fighting to save his Brooklyn College teaching job. He’s also tried with limited success to track down his items. Some were found tossed into random boxes, others were strewn across school shelves and plastic bags, and other items have completely disappeared. Wilson is seeking unspecified punitive and compensatory damages for his lost work in a lawsuit. He also is demanding CUNY dig up his property or pay him for what was lost. “All I want is justice. What gives people the right, for whatever alleged violations they used to fire me, to trash my history and my intellectual property?” Wilson told the Daily News . “The university has to be held accountable and apologize profusely and profoundly. They made some dastardly errors.” CUNY denies all allegations made against them by Wilson. The school said a neutral arbitrator found Wilson was appropriately terminated due to “serious misconduct” that included taking an additional $100,000 in compensation he wasn’t entitled to over the course of three years. He also allegedly submitted false documents to college officials. “We look forward to a full airing of all of the facts in this case, which clearly show that Mr. Wilson’s claims are without merit,” a spokesman said. “The lawsuit is built on false allegations.” Despite the allegations made by CUNY, Wilson definitely has a strong rep in the academic world. The 67-year-old was a leading expert on the history of Black working class and the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, the first Black union. He’s also enjoyed a long tenured career as a political science professor at Brooklyn College, and he founded the Brooklyn College Center for Diversity and MultiCultural Studies, dedicated to increasing diversity among students, teachers and classroom topics. In 1997, he was also appointed director of the Graduate Center for Worker Education in lower Manhattan. Things took a shift for the downside when the “raid” was carried out at the Worker Educations Center in January 2012. “We were told not to move, that we couldn’t make any phone calls, or leave the office or speak to anyone,” said Wilson. Several months later, the suit says another seizure was carried out on the Brooklyn College campus where Wilson had two offices. Everything was taken, including his letters with poet and fellow teacher Allen Ginsberg , his correspondence with music legend Ray Charles , a transcript and notes on a previously undiscovered speech by Martin Luther King Jr. , and thousands more pages and items. Even his research into a death threat made against Civil Rights and labor organizer A. Philip Randolph (who was mailed a severed human hand) was taken. In addition to all this, Wilson also can’t find the bulk of his 40-year academic research, which independent scholars value at $12 to $14 million. Wilson filed his federal suit in 2017, but the complex case is still underway nearly two years later. For Wilson, the main goal is to recoup as much as his work as possible. He reflected on the experience saying: “I have to tell you, it was traumatic, shattering and world changing what happened, and I never believed that it could and I certainly didn’t think it would happen at CUNY. I amassed an incredible amount of documentary history on Black workers…a treasure trove on some of the great and the unknown civil rights leaders. How it is possible that all this is going to be erased?”

White Teacher Placed On Leave After Allegedly Ripping Out Braids From Student’s Scalp

The rest is here:

A Wisconsin teacher was recently placed on administrative leave after he allegedly ripped several braids from an 11-year-old student’s scalp. According to WISC-TV , the young girl’s mother, Mikiea Price, claims the assault happened on Feb. 13 by the hands of Madison Metropolitan School District’s acting principal and positive behavior support coach Rob Mueller-Owens. Price states that the incident happened when Mueller-Owens got upset when her daughter and a friend that sprayed some perfume in class. When the girls did not listen to him to stop, they were instructed to leave the class. “When he came in, he asked (my daughter) to step out and she didn’t listen, and didn’t step out and as he walked toward her, she said she went toward the window and just wasn’t following direction, and he told her in front of the whole class, to the teacher, ‘Take the class somewhere else,’” Price told  Madison365 . “And (my daughter) said, ‘No, that’s fine. They can stay, I’ll go.’ As the girl was walking out of the classroom, Price said, Mueller-Owens began pushing her out. Soon after, she fell into a row of lockers, where the teacher lost his balance and fell on top of her. It’s believed that somewhere in this scuffle, three of her braids got ripped out. The incident was caught on tape and is currently being reviewed by the Madison police and the school district. The video has yet to be released to the public. A Madison teacher is on leave after a student said he pushed her and pulled out three of her braids (In the photo you can see where those used to be). I spoke with her mom today, who said her daughter is still traumatized and has not been able to return to school. #News3Now pic.twitter.com/iASs6UtZt8 — Amy Reid (@amyreidreports) February 21, 2019 Price, who is also a substitute teacher, says she was never called by the school after the incident and that her daughter never received any medical attention at school. Now, her child is too afraid to come back to class. “Just the whole experience is just traumatic and devastating and just confusing,” Price told WISC-TV. She added, “I’m just disgusted at this whole incident. You know I send my kid to school to learn, and that’s a place where mothers send their kids to be comfortable in. I just feel violated in so many ways that … this even happened to her.” Price is also disappointed because Mueller-Owen is an expert on restorative discipline practices, which focuses on getting to the root of behavioral problems with positive techniques. “That’s the devastating part about it,” Price said. “That’s the disgusting part about it. To have that much education and that much training and that much knowledge, to be certified with kids and not follow protocol, I think that’s the part that hurt me the most and disappointed me the most.” The Madison Metropolitan School District released the following statement: “As a District, we take any situation of this nature very seriously. All of our students need to be safe and supported in school, and we have a thorough investigation process and protocol that we follow. While we cannot talk about the details of a specific student or personnel situation, it is our responsibility to consider all of the facts of the situation and determine the right next steps. The staff person was put on leave while the situation was investigated. Based on that investigation, the staff person will not return to Whitehorse Middle School, and we are determining next steps. In addition, our team is coming together to create a full support plan to ensure that students is safe and fully supported at school.” RELATED NEWS: Christian School Apologizes After Teacher Wore Blackface During African History Lesson #JusticeForTamlaHorsford: Why And How Did This Mother Of Five Really Die At An Adult Sleepover? On Monday, Seales used her InstaStories to explain why she chose to come forward. I, on my podcast, um and on ‘The Breakfast Club,’ spoke about an individual who had approached me on the Internet and we spoke on the phone, and, uhh they said some troubling things in the conversation that made me take a step back.” Seales said she was instantly made aware the Rolle had a separate encounter with another woman, who says he greeted her at the door of his hotel room with no clothes on and then made her feel uncomfortable about her reaction. Seales says as of Monday, a total of eight women have come forward to reveal troubling behavior. “When I spoke about him on my podcast and on ‘The Breakfast Club,’ I didn’t say his name. I literally just said a couple of characteristics about him and it has been shocking and incredibly discomforting to me, how many women, 8 as of tonight, that have come forward to say his name. And that he had been incredibly problematic and behaved in a very sexually predatorial way that could have gotten him fired. I say all that to say, if you are approached by Myron Rolle, you should just be mindful,” she said in closing. Rolle is a 32-year-old Harvard Medical School resident who initially began his career in the limelight after he was drafted to the NFL in 2010 as a member of the Tennessee Titans. In a 2017 interview with CNN, Rolle said his trajectory to explore medicine began when he read Ben Carson’s autobiography, “Gifted Hands.” After graduating from Florida State University, he postponed his NFL career to attend Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. For Seales, this is the second time she reported contact with a prominent male harasser. In 2017, she retold an uncomfortable tale where Russell Simmons asked if the two had ever “f—–d.”

The teacher then told him “Well you can always go back, because I came here from Cuba and the day I feel I’m not welcome here anymore I would find another place to live.” His behavior became disruptive during his arrest where he called school authorities racist, threatened to beat up his teacher and get the principal fired. O.D. Excellence: These Teachers Have Officially Won Black History Month

See the original post here:

Source: Alejandro Gallardo / EyeEm / Getty Despite all the madness going on in the world, it does feel like people are putting forth lots of effort this year to celebrate Black History Month. African-American teachers all across the country have decided to switch from the tradition BHM celebration for something newer, truer and more fun. Although there’s nothing wrong with honoring our forefathers by dressing up as them or reading about the same people — educators these days understand the importance of creativity and fun when it comes to teaching young Black kids about their history. Social media has sparked a trend of teachers decorating their door with Black cultural icons of the past and present, all with the help of a little construction paper. One of the first decorated doors to go viral was Glen Mourning , a 4th grade reading teacher at Friendship Public Charter School in Washington D.C. Mourning’s life sized door version of Colin Kaepernick had Black Twitter so proud. The sign read, “They didn’t steal slaves. They stole scientists, doctors, architects, teachers, entrepreneurs, astronomers, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, etc, and made them slaves. Sincerely, your ancestors.” A photo of Lake Alfred Elementary School teacher Chanique Davis’ classroom door also made its rounds on social media. I mean, who doesn’t want to see features of a young Black girl rocking a tilted crown, natural hair and kente cloth during Black History Month. Davis told Edweek , “In a lot of corporate American settings, they don’t allow such a style. I wanted [my students] to know that this style is to be celebrated—it’s not to be shunned and it’s not anything negative. It’s a beautiful style, and … it’s just like anyone else’s hair: It’s welcomed, it’s celebrated. Since they are learning about the Martin Luther Kings and the Malcolm Xs in other settings, I want to be the one to let them know there are people who are currently adding to black history.” Anecia White of Harvest Preparatory School opted for the beautiful Black woman visuals too. She told People magazine “My source of inspiration for the door was every student in my classroom. They inspire me to be a better teacher every day, and I hope to inspire them to continue to learn about themselves.” Only two weeks left of Black History Month. We can’t wait to see else folks will come up with. *Raises fist in the air*
