Today he’s one of the biggest celebrities in the world, but before superstardom began, he was just another kid from Midwest. Born in Oklahoma but raised in Springfield, Missouri, where he attended Kickapoo High School, this future actor stayed busy as a youngster playing sports such as football, basketball and tennis. Back then it might have been hard trying to convince his peers that he would one day grow up to be voted twice as the sexiest man alive, but that’s exactly what happened. Jordin Sparks is Headed to Broadway

Jordin Sparks is off to Broadway. The season six winner of American Idol is the latest finalist to land a role on stage, following in the talented footsteps of Clay Aiken and Constantine Maroulis, the latter of whom was even nominated for a Tony Award. Beginning on August 19, Sparks will star in In the Heights , a musical set in the Dominican-American community of New York’s Washington Heights. She’ll play the character of Nina Rosario for 12 weeks, through November 14. In January, former High School Musical star Corbin Bleu debuted in the lead of the play. He’s received sold reviews for it.

Living Downstream links environment and cancer

There was once a village along a river. The people who lived there were very kind. These residents, according to parable, began noticing increasing numbers of drowning people caught in the river’s swift current. And so they went to work devising ever more elaborate technologies to resuscitate them. So preoccupied were these heroic villagers with rescue and treatment that they never thought to look upstreams to see who was pushing the victims in. Living Upstream is a walk up that river. Author, environmentalist and cancer survivor Sandra Steingraber, Ph.D., was raised in a family that seemed prone to cancer. She was diagnosed with bladder cancer at age 20. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when Steingraber was in high school. Her aunt died of the same form of cancer that Sandra had, and many of ther close family members also struggled with the disease. But there is no question that cancer does not run in Steingraber’s genes—she was adopted. Clearly, this family was struggling with toxic influences surrounding them in their daily lives. Living Downstream , first published in 1997, both tells the tale of Steingraber’s ongoing battle against cancer and her life’s work linking the effects of our toxic environment on cancer and our health. A documentary film adaptation of the book coincides with last month’s release of an updated edition of the book, tracking recent scientific revelations in the connection between a healthy environment and human health. Find out just how shady she was on Saturday’s premiere episode of MTV’s ‘When I Was 17.’ By Jocelyn Vena Khloe Kardashian Photo: MTV News Fans of her reality show know that nothing comes between Khloe Kardashian and her sisters, Kourtney and Kim. On “When I Was 17,” a new MTV show premiering Saturday at 11 a.m. (and also featuring Trey Songz and Perez Hilton), they’ll get to see just how true that is. Khloe explains how she took matters into her own hands when she realized she’d be the last of the trio to graduate high school. “My sisters were my best friends. We all went to an all-girls Catholic school,” Khloe remembered. “When my sisters graduated, I felt I didn’t have friends. There was no reason for me to stay.” To ensure she’d never have to endure a single day of school without her siblings, Khloe got creative. Registering herself for home schooling seemed like the best solution, she said. “And I was kind of a shady kid,” Khloe recalled. “So I located a home school. I went there, I enrolled myself. I had my parents sign, [but] I really signed.” To her mom, Kris, the decision seemed to come out of left field. “One day I get a call from the school, asking me about these forms I had filled out and signed transferring Khloe,” mom Kris Jenner recalled. “And I was like, ‘What the hell are you talking about? Khloe’s not going to home school.’ Somehow, she convinced her dad and I that’s where she belonged.” Her parents caved and gave their permission — with one condition. “She said as long as I really did my school work I could do it,” Khloe explained. “I finished three years of high school in one year. I graduated actually when I was 17, with honors. So — in your face!” “When I Was 17″— this week featuring Trey Songz, Khloe Kardashian and Perez Hilton — premieres Saturday (May 1) at 11 a.m. on MTV.
