Statues Out Of The Sunken Place: Why Black Women Should Be Honored

Read more:

T he removal of several Confederate statues across the country has forced many Americans into a reckoning with race. This national examination has led to the idea of statues honoring Black women, who are underrepresented. For many activists, monuments celebrating African-American women are long overdue. These stories of certain African Americans should be put on full display through public fixtures, pro-Black monument advocates have said. A” reclaiming my time” moment has swept the nation into more rallies for change. Here are recent developments that are bringing hope that there will be more statues of Black women: Coretta Scott-King Bust Unveiled In Boston The New England Conservatory debuted a tribute to Scott-King Tuesday (April 24) in time for the civil rights icon’s birthday on Friday (April 27). Artist MacLean Tiffany designed the “Continuation Of A Dream” bust as a way to honor the activist’s human rights and social justice work at the school, which is King’s alma mater, Boston Magazine reported. It had been a fixture at a city park for 118 years. The statue featured a Black slave sitting at Foster’s feet with a banjo. “It’s the single most offensive display of public art in Pittsburgh, hands down,” Paradise Gray , a hip-hop activist, musician and writer, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in August. “It permanently depicts the Black man at the White man’s feet.” The city is looking to erect a Black women’s statue to replace Foster and is taking nominations. Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth and many others would fit the bill. Memphis Takes Down Racist Confederate Monuments The city removed two racist statues under the cover of night after a heated debate last December. The removal of the statutes — one for Confederacy president Jefferson Davis and slave trader as well as KKK member Nathan Bedford Forrest —  was the culmination of months of protest work that pushed elected officials into action. Last year, Memphis TN, the city where MLK was killed, removed a statue of Nathan Bedford Forrest, a KKK leader and slaveowner. State lawmakers are now punishing the city by stripping away $250,000 in funding. #ConfederateMonuments This is America in 2018 https://t.co/Z99z0vvwlw — Kristen Clarke (@KristenClarkeJD) April 19, 2018 Events in Memphis, Pittsburgh and Boston will likely lead to more proposals for empowering statues. Source: Sandra Standbridge / Getty One tough billed warrior goose put the fear of God in a golf player they thought was threatening their family. The whole incident happened in Michigan at Wolf Creek Golf Course in the middle of a high school tournament.  Isaac Couling of Concord High School was walking with his peers down a fairway where a goose was sitting on an egg in a nest nearby. According to ABC News , a sign warned that geese were close-by and the golfers thought they were keeping their distance. However, what they didn’t know was that one stealthy killa was creeping up behind them making sure they didn’t get close to the fam. The goose attacked the four golfers and Isaac in particular got the worst of the animal’s fury. Devon Gilson-Pitts , whose husband is an assistant golf coach for Blissfield High School, thought it was the perfect time to pull out her camera and take pics. Eventually, once she put her camera down, Devon drove a golf cart with her husband in between the golfer and the goose so it would flee. She told ABC News it took four carts to get the feathered killa away. “At no point in my life I ever thought golf would be fun or exciting till yesterday,” Devon wrote on Facebook. “We have a great group of kids on the golf team and had some excitement on the course yesterday.” Well it’s goods to know Devon had a blast. Meanwhile, poor Isaac is probably traumatized. Leave it to your rival school to make fun of your pain. Blissfield Athletics probably didn’t think twice when they posted the pictures on Twitter. When one user asked if Isaac was okay, Blissfield responded , “Just his pride was hurt.”

SMH: Teen Named Malcolm X. Files Case Against HS Banning His Namesake Off Senior Sweater

(Photo by Michael Ochs Archives/Getty Images) Teen Named After Malcolm X Hit High School With Human Rights Case Malcolm Xavier Combs, 17, was named after one of the most known and affective Civil Rights leaders in history and unfortunately, his namesake still shakes White people up. All Malcolm wanted to do was rock his first name and middle initial on his Senior sweater at Christ The King HS in Queens like the rest of his senior class and he was told no, flat-out. Malcolm told NY Daily News he was pulled out of one of his advanced placement classes in February by Assistant Principal Veronica Arbitello, who told him he would not be permitted to have his name printed on his school sweater and that he shouldn’t want to be associated with “a person like that”. Staying stern, they refunded Malcolm Xavier his money for the senior sweater and soon after, a rally ensued. “Why am I in 2018 fighting for my own name?” asked Combs, who wore a T-shirt with the photo of the icon during the rally back in February. “Why does everyone have their names and initials and nicknames on their sweater, but why can’t I have my name?” SMH. The Christ the King High School senior is now fighting back with a complaint filed to the city’s Commission on Human Rights. So far the school hasn’t responded to the claim.

Hankerson, a student who worked in the financial aid office, is accused of embezzling $429,000. “It’s been an extremely difficult time,” Hankerson told Roland Martin . “I am trying to remain optimistic about this, but it has been a challenge–particularly going to class, worrying about safety and welfare concerns.” Hankerson worked in the financial aid office throughout his undergrad years at Howard. From 2011 to 2015, his main job was to work as an assistant the directors of the Financial Aid office. When asked directly about whether he stole money from the school, Hankerson seemed to think it was a ridiculous idea. He believes he’s only been dragged into this as part of a plot to force Dr. Wayne Fredrick out of his position as President of Howard. “I have not embezzeled any money ever, and I have not taken or embezzeled $429,000 from Howard University. That is absolutely false,” he insisted. “The money that was awarded to me was through the discretion of university officials who have the authority to make those decisions.” Including pay he received for working at the school, grants, financial aid and scholarships, Hankerson estimates that he received about $200,000 from Howard University during his undergrad years.
