Mom Celebrates Son’s Coming Out With Ad In Paper A mom showed support for her homosexual son coming out as gay with an ad in the newspaper earlier this week. The woman says she wanted to show her son and her city that she was proud of him for living his truth — partially in protest of the city voting against a recently proposed bill that would have legally prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation , gender identity and 13 other characteristics. Via TexasObserver : Readers of the Houston Chronicle may have noticed an unusual advertisement in the “Celebrations” section of Sunday’s edition. The ad consisted of an announcement from unidentified parents saying their teenage son, “Drake,” had come out as gay. Drake was pictured in the ad but identified only by his first name. Thanks to some cyber-sleuthing, the Observer determined that the teen in the ad is Drake Wilson, a senior who serves as student body vice president at Snohomish High School in Washington state. Joan Wilson, Drake’s mother, said Tuesday that she placed the ad in response to the defeat of Houston’s Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO) in November. “I couldn’t think of a better place than Houston, out of the entire country, where they needed to hear my message of pride,” Joan Wilson said, adding that she believes her son was born gay and created by God. “My announcement was my way of humanizing the issue.” We can’t believe the city voted IN FAVOR of discrimination being legal! But what do you think of the mother’s “protest?” Darryl Morrison / YouTube

If you looked at any of the promotional photos for “The Wiz Live,” you might have noticed that Glinda the Good Witch of the North, played by Uzo Aduba, rocked a curly blonde wig. But in the actual broadcast, Aduba’s hair was a braided, updo natural style that was elegant and regal, resembling a crown. That was no doubt intentional. In a recent interview with theGrio, Shanice Williams, who played Dorothy in the broadcast, explained the decision. “I know you saw the promo pictures for Glinda with the blonde hair, and we was like, ‘Good witch doesn’t have to have blonde hair, she can have her natural braided up hair, like an African-American queen.’ I’m happy that they stuck with those choices. It added to her character. She’s just funky, modern and fierce.”… [ MadameNoire ] Working While Black: My Coworker Keeps Using The N Word As told to Veronica Wells This school year, I started working as a music teacher for this charter school in Brooklyn. The job is awesome… The school even has a chef that comes in to cook for the teachers. I’m talking about delicious meals, with all food groups represented. Anyway, since the food is so good, many of the teachers eat lunch together. During our daily lunches, the theater teacher, a Latina woman, took a liking to me… As the days, weeks and months passed, this woman got more and more comfortable with me… During one of these nights, she started talking about a conversation she had with some man in the street. She was going on and on and I was tuning in and out, when I heard her say,” You know, and I’m saying to this guy, ‘Yo my n-gga you need to…” She said it so quickly, that I brushed it off, figuring I’d misheard her. But then, later that week, speaking about another student, she said the word… [ MadameNoire ] Unarmed Black Georgians More Likely To Be Killed By Cops Or Shot In The Back …The Atlanta Journal-Constitution published an investigative piece regarding the shootings coupled with an interactive visual database. The AJC’s findings were alarming and highlighted a possible link between police and the improper use of force. From the AJC: Nearly half the 184 Georgians shot and killed by police since 2010 were unarmed or shot in the back, an Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Channel 2 Action News investigation has found. Those findings emerged from the most extensive review of police shootings ever undertaken in Georgia, and cast doubt on claims by police that deadly force was always justified. The AJC and Channel 2 reported in October that every police shooting case since 2010 had been deemed lawful in the state’s criminal justice system. “So many of these cases involve somebody being shot in the back. It’s very, very troubling,” said Philip Stinson, a nationally recognized expert on police shootings and misconduct from Bowling Green State University, who reviewed the AJC/Channel 2 findings…” HipHopWired ] Is Rihanna Releasing ‘Anti’ Before Christmas? Lunch Lady Fired For Giving Food To Hungry 12-Year-Old Girl A school lunch lady for giving a free meal to a hungry young student according to WPTV reports: Dalene Bowden says she gave the meal to a middle school student who said she didn’t have any money. “My heart hurts. I truly loved my job, and I can’t say that I wouldn’t do it again,” said Bowden. It’s been a week since Bowden lost her job at Irving Middle School. “What do you do? Send them out there, so they can get it taken away and thrown away? No,” she said. Last Tuesday, Bowden was working as a server when a 12-year-old girl told her she didn’t have any lunch money and was hungry. “So, I handed her the food and said, ‘Here. We’ll take care of it in a minute,’” she said. Bowden’s supervisor saw what happened and reported her. “He said I was on permanent leave until he called me. I should not call them. He will call me. And they never called me. I got the letter,” Bowden said. The letter was signed and written by the school district director of human resources. In that letter, Bowden was terminated for “theft.” Bowden told a local newspaper she offered to pay for the $1.70 meal, but her supervisor rejected the offer. Through social media, she has rallied quite a number of supporters. She has also hired an attorney. The school district could not be reached for comment. What the hell kind of person snitches on the lunch lady for giving a free meal away to a hungry child?!!?
Higher education has always been promoted as the best way to address most, if not all, of the Black community’s social and economic ills. But what if our personal quest for empowerment is actually helping to drive the school-to-prison pipeline? It is a question that some college students at the University of California have begun weighing and organizing around. More specifically, the student group, which calls itself the Afrikan Black Coalition (ABC), released a report last month on its website, revealing how the UC system, which includes 10 campuses across the state, is “an indirect investor of private prisons through mutual funds-managed by outside investment bankers.” Well, according to the ABC report, the UC system has allegedly invested $25 million in both the Corrections Corporation of America and private prison provider The Geo Group…In response to its own findings, the student group has decided to take action against the university… [ MadameNoire ] NYU Admin Prospective Student: If You Can’t Afford $65 Application Fee How Will You Pay $60K Tuition? Joshua Jackson is drawing much-needed attention to the exorbitant cost of higher education in America, not to mention the elitism and subtle racism that underlies much of that cost. The Black cartoonist gained Internet fame over the weekend when he exposed an NYU administrator for a rather out of pocket response to his request for the $65 application fee into one of the school’s master’s programs be waived. Jackson was interested in applying to the Tisch School of the Arts’ Art & Public Policy master’s program… Whatever enthusiasm Jackson had about this program dwindled significantly when he was basically told he’s too poor to help other poor people.
