When Hollywood legend Kim Novak presented at the Academy Awards in February, the iconic actress didn’t receive quite the reaction she expected from her rare public appearance. Now, the actress is speaking out against the “bullies” and “jabs.” In a lengthy post on her Facebook page, Novak admits to receiving “fat injections” in her face in order to smooth out her skin and blames her speech difficulties on the fact that she had “taken a pill to relax.” “After the Oscars, I was bullied by the press and the public on the Internet and TV,” Novak writes. “However, I will no longer hold myself back from speaking out against bullies. We can’t let people get away with affecting our lives.” Novak claims the cruel criticism she received triggered a personal “tailspin” and she goes on to specifically call out Donald Trump who tweeted that Kim should “sue her plastic surgeon” during her presentation. The Donald ragging on other peoples appearances? We’re definitely Team Kim on this one. She may have not brought her A-game on Oscar night, but Kim is 81! At that age, we can definitely understand the desire to pop a Xanax and visit the plastic surgeon before appearing on TV in front of millions. Salute this young man! Poor Black DC Student With 4.3 GPA Accepted Into 5 Ivy League Schools This is the college acceptance season — frequently a nervous time for high school seniors. But D.C.’s Avery Coffey can relax. He applied to five Ivy League universities and all five accepted him. Via My Fox DC reports: Coffey attends Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, a D.C. public school with strict rules. None of the 439 students at Banneker is allowed to bring a cell phone into the building. They are also not allowed to go to their lockers during the school day. (That has spawned the peculiar tradition of piling up textbooks at the base of lockers, so kids can switch books between classes without violating the locker rule.) The strict rules at Banneker have fostered a rather serious academic environment. Principal Anita Berger says year after year after year, 100 percent of Banneker graduates are accepted into post-secondary institutions. Among these brainy and motivated public school students is 17-year-old Coffey who, like a lot of kids, enjoys sports. What does he play? “Baseball, basketball, tennis, soccer,” Coffey told us. He also enjoys academics, and he has a 4.3 high school report card average, adjusted for the demanding International Baccalaureate courses he takes. Coffey scored very high on standardized tests also. He calls himself a “determined” student. Coffey applied to five Ivy League universities, and, amazingly, has been accepted at all of them: Harvard, Princeton, Yale, the University of Pennsylvania, and Brown. And four of the five universities have already offered very generous financial aid packages. (Harvard is still formulating its offer.) Avery Coffey wants to major in finance. What’s the perfect job? “I guess probably the CEO of an investment (or management consulting) firm. I guess pretty much overseeing acquisitions or transactions between large companies. Hopefully, Fortune 500 companies,” Coffey told us with a grin. Coffey grew up in a single-parent household in D.C.’s Ward 8, the poorest part of the city. His mom works as a technician at Children’s Hospital. Avery’s advice to younger kids? “You can go anywhere you want to, pursue any career that you want to, and you shouldn’t let anybody hinder you from trying to reach your goals,” he said. Coffee hasn’t yet made up his mind as to which college to attend. But he says he’s leaning toward Penn or Harvard. Congrats!

With all the violence going on in Chicago, it’s nice to hear some good news. Urban Prep School Sends All Graduates To College If only more schools could follow in their footsteps. According to The Huffington Post: All 167 graduating seniors of Chicago’s Urban Prep Academies are college-bound for the fourth consecutive year. Students of the two Chicago public charter high schools — located in the city’s Englewood and University Village neighborhoods — gathered Thursday morning to celebrate the achievement of their schools, which some have dubbed “Hogwarts in the Hood” for their impressive, seemingly magical rates of success, CBS Chicago reports. Still, Urban Prep’s founder and CEO Tim King says, “the only magic going on at Urban Prep is the magic that these guys put in with their hard work and dedication.” Mayor Rahm Emanuel was on hand at the Thursday celebration and said the network’s students were setting a fine example others should follow, the Chicago Defender reports. “I want everyone in this city, I want everyone in this country to look up here,” Emanuel said. According to Fox Chicago, 85 percent of the students at Urban Prep’s campuses come from low-income families and many of the students start at least two grade levels behind where they should be. Her company is accepting money for services but the company isn’t keeping up its end of the bargain. Via CBS Atlanta reports: Cynthia Bailey has graced the covers of magazines. Each week, you can find the supermodel on Bravo’s Real Housewives of Atlanta. Her company, the Bailey Agency School of Fashion, has been featured on the show and it helps hook aspiring models. “Cynthia Bailey is on the Atlanta Housewives and my daughter talks about her and my granddaughter talks about her,” Dorothy Lewis said. Lewis’ granddaughter is 7-year-old Paris Davis. “She’s bubbly, loves playing and she loves singing, dancing and likes modeling, very talkative,” Lewis said. Anytime Paris takes a picture, “she does her own poses,” Lewis said. So after seeing Bailey on Real Housewives of Atlanta, Lewis looked up her agency and found a photo contest for babies and kids. “The only thing I had to do was submit her photo and then I had to submit an entry fee on the website,” Lewis explained. Lewis paid $20 to enter Paris into the “big kid” category for the month of January. The Bailey Agency promise? Each month a winner will be chosen in each category with the winners featured on TheBaileyAgencySchoolofFashion.com. “To me it’s like playing the lottery. Your chances are slim but what if? That would be exciting if you win,” Lewis said. The problem? The Bailey Agency hasn’t updated the winners since October 2013, but the site has continued to collect money. “It’s just not right to be advertising that you’re going to do one thing and take people’s money from around the country and you’re not following through on what you’re saying,” Lewis said. On top of that, until CBS46 started asking questions, the website stated “a portion of the proceeds … will be donated to the Atlanta Diaper Relief.” The nonprofit folded six months ago. “It’s like false advertisement,” Lewis said. CBS46 took the concerns to Bailey. “We didn’t even realize it folded until we reached out to her to let her know we were going to be changing it over,” Bailey said. The agency now gives a portion to Kile’s World, the foundation started by Tameka Foster Raymond in honor of her late son. And the contest? The agency collected 79 entries and $1,580 while the winners weren’t being updated. But the contest is supposed to pay out $450 a month in prizes, in this case, losing money. “Do you have anything to say to those moms or those grandmothers who were concerned their money wasn’t being used for what it was intended?” reporter Jennifer Mayerle asked. “First of all I think that’s a very negative approach to the whole situation, that’s not like their $20 wasn’t being used for what it was intended for. It’s just a matter of us being in transition on our side and we were just behind on the website. But now it’s updated,” Bailey said. Bailey said she will be more diligent about the contest in the future and will issue a refund to anyone who is unhappy about the way it was handled. Bailey also gave CBS46 the following statement: “The program is not revenue driven. The Bailey Babies Contest was created in the spirit of giving moms with young babies a platform to give their children exposure. This was a fun & inexpensive way to involve young babies in the school since they are obviously too young to participate in any of the other school programs that are offered. The program was also developed for the purpose of extending our brand out to people outside of the Atlanta area that support and want to be a part of The Bailey Agency. I apologize for any negligence on my part as far as my staff not keeping the website properly updated. I hope after receiving all the correct and updated information from me personally, you can appreciate the sincerity of my intentions. I appreciate you for bringing this important matter to my attention. I can assure The Bailey Babies mommies that this will not be an issue going forward. Martin Luther King Jr.’s granddaughter, Yolanda Renee King, served as flower girl during the recent wedding of Andrea Idelle Young, daughter of former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young, and art consultant Jerry Thomas Jr. The wedding was held March 8 at La Fontaine Bleue in Glen Burnie, Md. The bride, daughter of the former mayor and United Nations ambassador and the late Jean Childs Young, is an attorney and executive director of the Atlanta-based Andrew J. Young Foundation.The groom, also an attorney, is the founder of Jerry Thomas Arts, an art consulting and art brokerage firm that specializes in African and African American art.Both have family, business and educational ties to the Washington D.C. area. Andrea Young Thomas graduated from Georgetown University’s School of Law, and Jerry Thomas Jr., the son of Estell Thomas and the late Jerry Thomas Sr. of Washington, earned his law degree at George Washington University. Andrew Young, in attendance with his wife, Carolyn Young, escorted his daughter down the aisle. Olympic Gold Medalist Edwin Moses served as best man.The bride’s sisters, Paula Young Shelton and Lisa Young Alston, served as matrons of honor with Yolanda Renee King, the only grandchild of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, as flower girl.The groom’s brother, Rev. Nathaniel Thomas, conducted the ceremony. According to Chicago Tribune: Every weekday, Masharah Tingling says her dad would walk her to her school and be waiting for her when classes finished up. But on Wednesday afternoon, their ritual went terribly wrong when the two were confronted by a man with a lengthy criminal record on a Rogers Park street, according to Chicago police and Cook County prosecutors. When the man hurled a racial epithet at them, Michael Tingling pulled his 15-year-old daughter behind him, authorities said. The man then struck her father in the chest, he tried to defend himself but moments later he collapsed in a nearby business and was rushed to the hospital in full cardiac arrest, according to prosecutors. Michael Tingling, 59, was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston less than a hour. According to the mother, Firek “stared at them, looked at her up and down, and her dad grabbed her, put her behind him and he told him, ‘You need to walk away.’“The guy was just standing there grinning,” she said. In court, prosecutors said Tingling had pulled his daughter behind him after Firek had stopped in their path and asked, “What (N-word)?” Authorities said Tingling is black and Firek is white. Assistant State’s Attorney Rita Infelise said Firek punched Tingling in the upper chest. Tingling pushed him, and Firek punched him again in the chest, she said. A judge ordered Joseph Firek, 59, who is on parole for a residential burglary conviction, held on $250,000 bail Friday on charges of first-degree murder and a hate crime. It’s a shame people can’t even pick up their daughter from school without experiencing such hate.
