Lady Gaga’s appearance, specifically her nose, seems to have changed in recent months, though it may just be the photos, filters, makeup and or other explanations. Some observers have suggested that it’s the kind of mark someone would have while healing from some kind of surgery to alter their nose. This is discouraging. A new Harvard study shows there is some discrimination going on in the digital space , specifically on Airbnb, where black hosts have to charge less than non-blacks for comparable rentals. Via Valleywag reports : If you rent a room on Airbnb, odds are you know what your host looks like—their picture is featured front and center. A new report out of Harvard Business School crunched the data, and says this is totally fine, as long as you’re not black. The study, titled “Digital Discrimination: The Case of Airbnb.com ,” puts forth a pretty bleak premise. If you take two rental spaces, of the same general quality and in the same general area, the one owned by a non-black host will cost 12 percent more, on average: We find that non-black hosts are able to charge approximately 12% more than black hosts, holding location, rental characteristics, and quality constant. Moreover, black hosts receive a larger price penalty for having a poor location score relative to non-black hosts. These differences highlight the risk of discrimination in online marketplaces, suggesting an important unintended consequence of a seemingly-routine mechanism for building trust. It’s hard to pin down exactly, but the educated presumption is that black Airbnb hosts have to lower their prices in order to compete with non-black Airbnb users, simply because Airbnb users would prefer to not rent from a black host. The study doubts Airbnb is subject to any illegal discrimination liability, because otherwise it wouldn’t show all those black and white faces so prominently. In a statement to Recode , Airbnb, of course, dismisses the study: “ We are committed to making Airbnb the most open, trusted, diverse, transparent community in the world and our Terms of Service prohibit content that discriminates. The data in this report is nearly two years old and is from only one of the more than 35,000 cities where Airbnb hosts welcome guests into their homes. Additionally, the authors made a number of subjective or inaccurate determinations when compiling their findings.” Of course, this wouldn’t be a case of Airbnb employing discriminatory policies, or encouraging discrimination—at worst, they’re just facilitating it as a middleman. But it’s a reminder that the “sharing economy” isn’t a fist-bump feel-good utopia, as advertised—we share all our dirty prejudices, too. Guess there really is racism everywhere. Sad news for lovers of the Black Arts movement. Amiri Baraka has passed away . Via L.A. Times reports : Amiri Baraka died Thursday after weeks of failing health, a family spokeperson confirmed. He was 79. A playwright, poet, critic and activist, Baraka was one of the most prominent and controversial African American voices in the world of American letters. He was born Everett LeRoi Jones on Oct. 7, 1934, in Newark, N.J. A gifted student, he graduated from high school two years early and went to college at New York University and Howard University. After serving in the Air Force for more than two years, Baraka — then Jones — was dishonorably discharged for reading communist texts. He then moved to New York, attending graduate school at Columbia University and becoming involved in the Beat scene. In 1958, he founded the avant-garde poetry magazine Yugen, which he co-edited with Hettie Cohen — the two were married from 1960 to 1965. At that time he also co-edited a literary newsletter, The Floating Bear, published “Blues People: The Negro Experience in White America and the Music That Developed from It” (1963) and penned the play “Dutchman,” which explosively explored issues of race and gender. “I can see now that the dramatic form began to interest me because I wanted to go ‘beyond’ poetry. I wanted some kind of action literature,” Baraka wrote in his 1984 autobiography. “Dutchman” won the 1964 Obie Award for best American play. After the 1965 assassination of Malcolm X, Jones changed his name to Imamu Amiri Baraka, moved to Harlem and married his second wife, Amina (formerly Sylvia Robinson). Inspired in part by a 1960 trip to Cuba and in part by the radical wing of the civil rights movement, he espoused separatist ideas and founded the Black Arts Repertory Theatre and School. Baraka led the Black Arts Movement, an aesthetic sibling to the Black Panthers. Although the movement was fractious and short-lived, it involved significant authors such as Gwendolyn Brooks, Eldridge Cleaver, Gil-Scott Heron, Nikki Giovanni, Ishmael Reed and Quincy Troupe. “[W]e wrote art that was, number one, identifiably Afro American according to our roots and our history and so forth. Secondly, we made art that was not contained in small venues,” Baraka said in a 2007 interview. “The third thing we wanted was art that would help with the liberation of black people, and we didn’t think just writing a poem was sufficient. That poem had to have some kind of utilitarian use; it should help in liberating us. So that’s what we did. We consciously did that.” In Harlem, Baraka sent trucks into the community carrying people — including the artist Sun Ra — performing poetry, dance and music. Baraka’s work during the 1960s included the plays “The Black Mass,” “The Toilet,” and “The Slave”; the poetry collections “Black Art” and “Black Magic”; and the provocative collection “Home: Social Essays.” In the late 1960s and into the 1970s, Baraka became deeply involved in a number of organizations working to promote and consolidate African American political power. In 1980, he began teaching at the State University of New York-Stony Brook, retiring from its African Studies department in 1994. During his long academic career, he taught at Rutgers University, George Washington University, Yale University, San Francisco State University, Columbia and the New School for Social Research. Baraka made his home in Newark and remained a creative and political force. In 2002, he was named New Jersey’s second poet laureate — and soon became the center of a controversy surrounding his 9/11 poem “Somebody Blew Up America.” The poem — which pointed out offenses committed, mostly by whites, around the world and throughout history — included controversial lines that were considered anti-Semitic. Before Baraka could serve out his two-year term in the post, the poet laureate position was eliminated. Although he was frequently embroiled in political controversy, Baraka’s artistic achievements did not go unacknowledged. His awards include fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, a PEN/Faulkner Award, a Rockefeller Foundation Award for Drama, and the Langston Hughes Award from City College of New York. She had to find out on Facebook though? Mother Finds Out About Son’s Death On Facebook It’s hard enough to accept the death of a child, but finding out on Facebook makes it worse. According to NY Daily News: An Indianapolis woman who signed onto Facebook Saturday found herself faced with the heartbreaking news no mother should ever have to endure. Her 15-year-old son, Anthoney, had been shot dead, people were writing on her son’s Facebook wall. That was the agonizing moment she found out. “Someone put on Facebook, ‘RIP Anthony, I will miss you’ and then the phone calls started coming in to my house and cell phone,” his mother, Nikkita Milledge, told CNN amid tears. Her son, a star high school football player, was shot twice outside an Indianapolis apartment complex just before 1 p.m. But investigators now believe that he and another 19-year-old were attempting a robbery on Saturday afternoon when he was killed. Anthoney was fatally shot twice, police believe by the older teen. To Milledge, and perhaps any parent put in her place, it all doesn’t add up. “I did everything to keep him busy but it wasn’t enough,” the distraught mother told CNN. Anthoney played on a youth football league at the state level where he was placed second several times, Fox59 reported. At home he had four brothers and sisters with whom he was described as close with. His younger brother described him to CNN as someone everyone could look up to and rely on. The mother’s best efforts proved to be not enough, however, with the Indianapolis area that her family calls home having had four shooting deaths this month alone, as WTHR reports. “We all need to take a stand as mothers who have lost children,” said his mother. The 19-year-old, since identified as Brice Price, was arrested Tuesday for Warren’s death, WIBC reports. Price faces charges of murder and conspiracy to commit robbery. Only probation? Where’s the justice? Teacher’s Aide Gets Probation After Sex With Student Authority figures getting off this easy only encourages this disgusting behavior. According to St. Louis Post Dispatch reports: A former teacher’s aide with the Wentzville School District won’t spend any time in jail after pleading guilty to having sex with one of her students. Victoria Reinke, 30, of the 600 block of Aster Lane in O’Fallon, could have been sentenced to four years in prison, but on Monday, Circuit Judge Rick Zerr placed her on five year’s probation instead. Prosecutors had sought a prison sentence of two years. Reinke had been working at Timberland High School at the time of the relationship with the student in March 2012, police said. According to prosecutors, the victim was a teen in the special education program. The boy, who initially was 16 when he met Reinke, has a learning disability with an IQ of 70. He told prosecutors that the two did not have sexual intercourse until he was 17. The encounters took place after school in Reinke’s van, police said. The two communicated via phone calls and text messages, which numbered more than 400 between December 2011 and March 2012, according to court documents. Reinke pleaded guilty to one count of sexual contact with a student by a school employee on Oct. 23. Reinke apologized in a short statement before the court. “I was the responsible, mature one and should have never let anything happen,” she said. Zerr said a suspended sentence will still leave Reinke with a felony conviction but will allow her to take care of her children. “I’m sorry for the loss of relationship with your son,” he told the teen’s parents, “but I don’t think sending this lady to prison is going to fix that.” SMH. Teacher Arrested For Having Sex With Former Student These pervs deserve to possibly becoming someone’s bald-headed beyotch in jail. According to Deseret News: A Davis High School teacher was charged Tuesday with having sex on multiple occasions with a former student. Brianne Land Altice, 34, was charged in Farmington’s 2nd District Court with three counts of rape, a first-degree felony. A boy told police that between Jan. 1 and Sept. 30, when he was between 16 and 17 years old, he had sexual intercourse with Altice on three different occasions, according to charging documents. Altice was believed to have had sex with a 17-year-old on many occasions, including at her South Weber home and at a park, a Davis County Jail report states. The teen was allegedly able to accurately describe the layout of Altice’s home to detectives as well as tattoos on her body. The Davis County District Attorney’s Office said Tuesday there were still “pending investigations” ongoing that involved other potential victims. Altice was placed on administrative leave by the school district in October pending the outcome of an investigation. SMH.
Khloe Kardashian has just filed court documents to divorce Lamar Odom, citing irreconcilable differences and seeking the restoration of her own name. It’s been quite a long time coming, and barring a reconciliation that feels extremely unlikely before this thing is finalized, it’s over for Khloe and Lamar. He’s been deep in the world of hard drugs and women, and has repeatedly refused interventions and Khloe’s efforts toward getting himself clean. Khloe cites “irreconcilable differences” for the split. As previously reported, the couple has a prenuptial agreement , so division of property will be short and sweet legally, as they kept all their property separate. She is petitioning the court to have Odom removed from as her legal surname, restoring it to just Khloe Kardashian. She’s getting rid of Odom, literally. Khloe is not asking for spousal support from her NBA player husband and wants the judge to reject any bid by Lamar for the same from the reality star. The so-called Lamar Odom crack video (above), in which an out-of-it Lamar raps about cheating on Khloe. He claims he wasn’t on drugs but merely drunk, and doesn’t overtly say he’s giving it to other women, but the implication is clear and the clip is emblematic.
