University Of Chicago Student Found Dead In Dorm Via USAToday Staff and students at the University of Chicago have been horrified to learn that a student lay dead in his dorm room for an unknown amount of time until the smell of decomposition was noticed. It’s not clear when 20-year-old Nicholas Barnes died, but before his body was found, face-down on the floor on Saturday afternoon, it had been eight days since he used his key card to enter the university residence, reports the Chicago Tribune. But school officials note a key card isn’t required to gain access at all hours of the day, so the time span could have been shorter than that. An autopsy failed to reveal the cause of death but police say foul play is not suspected. Toxicology testing still needs to be carried out. Barnes, a Pittsburgh native, was a third-year student specializing in Germanic studies, and the school says it is “making every effort to understand the circumstances surrounding” his death, NBC Chicago reports. Students say they are disturbed that Barnes’ death could have gone unnoticed for so long. “It’s just strange,” says a freshman from Tennessee. “How the hell was he there that long? Ashley Wagner’s figure skating short program was hot but the judges scores left her cold. The 22-year-old American skater did a little shimmy with joy as she took her bows on the ice, confident her performance was excellent. But when she saw her score – a 63.10 – she couldn’t hide her disappointment. Like, at all. Wagner’s shocked face quickly became the Sochi Olympics version of McKayla Maroney’s “not impressed” face from the 2012 Summer Olympics. “Bullsh*t”, she mouthed to her teammates, although she later amended her statement to “To score that low was very disappointing to me,” when she spoke to reporters. The score put Wagner in fourth place but it was good enough to advance the U.S. to the next round, where they ended up with a bronze medal in team skating. Woman Used Stun Gun To Discipline Children People really don’t give a fawk. According to Orlando Sentinel: Misbehavior in a Kissimmee household resulted in an hour-long punishment called “the electric chair” with shocks from a stun gun for three children under 10, according to police. Their caregiver defended the practice by telling a detective she only threatened her cousin’s kids with the electricity zapping between the stun-gun’s metal prongs. Police believed the children and charged Letina Smith late Thursday with three counts of child abuse after the two brothers and their sister gave similar accounts of receiving painful shocks. Osceola County school officials reported the possible abuse shortly after 2 p.m. when the sister asked her teacher at Sunrise Elementary School not to call her home and say she had misbehaved in class, according to the arrest report. “(She) explained that the punishment was to get touched with a ‘taser,’” the report stated. “The electric chair consists of the child who is in trouble holding themselves… with their back on the wall and their legs forming a chair. They have to stay there for an hour and if they speak or move Letina will come up to them with the electrical weapon, “taser,” and activate and touch them with it.” The state Department of Children and Families is also investigating. DCF handles on average 3,600 child abuse complaints every month in its 12-county region including Central Florida. “I can only recall one other ( that involved a stun gun) but we do see all types of what we could consider ‘bizarre’ punishment,” DCF spokeswoman Carrie Proudfit wrote in an email to the Orlando Sentinel. Social commentary aside, Dance Moms Season 4 Episode 5 found Kendall, Brooke, her sister Paige, and Mackenzie in the pyramid’s bottom tier. Nia and Maddie were second; Chloe got the top spot. Abby conjured up a dance routine based on the civil rights movement, which just sounds like it would be offensive and tacky, but no one’s objecting. When the venerable mentor suggests that Christi homeschool Chloe because it’s worked so effectively for Maddie, Chloe commendably declines. Mature beyond her years, that youngster. Respect. At the competition, Mackenzie got the team off to a strong start … or not. Abby concluded that any one of the team members could be dispatched. Ouch. She’s always a taskmaster, that Abby. Nonetheless, the girls received a standing ovation for the group routine, with Holly front and center in the aforementioned, controversial civil rights-themed dance. How did the results shake out after this? Maddie and the trio won the top prize, but Mackenzie only finished second, a pill made even tougher to swallow by Abby’s commentary and comparisons. We can’t imagine a worse way to take yourself out High School Student In Denver Attempts Suicide By Setting Himself On Fire Via USAToday One student was critically injured Monday after he set himself on fire in a high school cafeteria in an apparent suicide attempt. Fire officials say more than 80% of the student’s body was burned after he tried to kill himself at Standley Lake High School in suburban Denver. The 16-year-old, whose name has not been released, was taken to an area hospital. The fire, which broke out at about 7:15 a.m. MT, was extinguished quickly. Spokeswoman Cheri Spottke of the Westminster Police Department said the teen had not made any statements before igniting himself. “There is no indication there were any threats,” she said. The teen reportedly doused himself with oil before setting himself on fire and left word of his intentions on social media. Spottke said she didn’t know how the student started the fire. “This is not someone’s fault. I had this planned for years,” the teen wrote in a social-media post. He went on to mention that friends over the weekend tried to talk him out of the suicide attempt. “If anyone says that they know why I did this, … nobody knows and nobody will.” This kid sounds very, very disturbed. This is so sad. Student Killed In Shooting At South Carolina State University Why shoot up the school? According to USA Today: A student was killed Friday at South Carolina State University, and authorities say they are searching for at least four suspects. The shooting took place around 1:30 p.m. ET Friday outside Andrew Hugine Suites, a dormitory for upperclassmen on the campus of the historically black university about 40 miles south of Columbia, S.C. Killed was Brandon Robinson, 20, of Orangeburg. He had played on the school’s football team. “We are extraordinarily sad about this,” said university President Thomas Elzey, who teared up as he spoke at an evening news conference. “He’s a very nice young man … and it hurts. It hurts us all.” University Police Chief Mernard Clarkson said officials know who fired the shots and believe that the suspects have left campus but had wanted to be ready in case they returned.
