Main Climate Threat Comes From Stuff We Haven’t Yet Built… There’s Still Time to Turn It Around

We have to stop building polluting infrastructure, now. Photo: eutorphication & hypoxia via flickr. If you think all the carbon-spewing stuff we’ve built to date, from power plants to cars to airplanes, will just drag us over the climate change tipping point, think again. A new study, published in the journal

Dispatch from the Front Lines of a War on Science

Photo via Wired You may have heard of Simon Singh long before his name rose to the top of the list of those championing sound science: He’d written two bestselling books, Fermat’s Enigma and the Big Bang . Despite the wide range of subject matter contained in those books, the topic that ended up casting him into controversy was much different — a seemingly benign newspaper article about some of the pitfalls of alternative medicine. He ended up defending his career from a powerful group, the British Chiropractic Association, who sued him for li… Read the full story on TreeHugger

First-Ever Carbon Map Shows Global Warming in Peru’s Amazon

This image shows an area of road building and development adjacent to primary forest in red tones, and secondary forest regrowth in green tones. Credit: Carnegie Institution. You can see the effects of global warming in a new high-resolution map that shows carbon locked up in tropical forest vegetation and emitted by land-use practices in Peru’s Amazon. The maps were created with satellite mapping, airborne-laser technology, and ground-based plot surveys. And the images may help pave the way for a new United Nations monitoring system to curb deforestation and forest degradation…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

California To Extend Carpool-Lane Access To 40,000 Plug-In Hybrids

Photo: Flickr , CC Should Access for Regular Hybrids be Phased Out? In California, vehicles that meet certain fuel economy and tailpipe emission criteria are granted special access to the high occupancy vehicle lanes (HOV, aka the carpool lane). In car-centric places like Los Angeles, it’s a huge advantage. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill (SB 535) into law that extends HOV-lane access to 40,000 qualifying plug-in hybrid … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Sustainability and the Importance of Engaging Everyone

Image courtesy of Walmart This guest post was written by Shannon Frederick, director of global association communications for Walmart. What does sustainability mean to you ? Before you answer, shift your thinking from a business point-of-view to your personal life. Life Cycle Analysis of Electric Car Shows Battery Has Only Minor Impact

Nissan LEAF batteries. Photo: Michael Graham Richard Copper and Aluminium Actually Worse than Lithium Speaking of lithium-ion batteries , a recent life-cycle analysis (a type of study that aims to find the complete environmental impact of something, taking into account manufacturing, usage, and disposal) of the lithium-ion batteries used in electric cars had some very interesting findings. It turns out that batteries have an even lower impact than most of us thought. Read on for… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Lithium-Ion Battery Oversupply to Drive Prices Down Around 20%

Photo: GM A Significant Drop Predicted It’s all about supply and demand: According to Hideo Takeshita, an analyst at the Institute of Information Technology Ltd. in Tokyo, the price of lithium-ion batteries could drop by about 19% in 2010, while another analyst, Shiro Mikoshiba of Nomura Holdings, said that the worsening oversupply may push prices down as much as 25%. While it’s always important to take market predictions with a grain of salt, if lithium-ion battery prices drop by anywhere near 1/5th, it’s going to have a positive impact on the

Tapping the Energy Below the Earth’s Surface

Image credit: lydurs /Flickr The heat in the upper six miles of the earth’s crust contains 50,000 times as much energy as found in all the world’s oil and gas reserves combined. Despite this abundance, only 10,700 megawatts of geothermal electricity generating capacity have been harnessed worldwide…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

3D Look Inside Whales’ Heads Shows Negative Effects of Marine Noise

Image via UCSD What happens inside a whale’s head when it encounters sound? The mammals have highly developed capabilities of detecting and processing sound waves, something that helps them communicate over long distances, but which also spell their demise in an ocean filled with intense, loud human-generated noise. We’ve seen research that shows scientists looking into how too-loud noise can damage and even kill whales, but now r… Read the full story on TreeHugger
