Will Ford’s Electric Car Strategy Succeed?

Photo: Ford Do People Really Want Dedicated EV Models? It’s interesting to note how different Ford’s electrification strategy is from most of the other auto makers who are making electric cars and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). The majority seems to have learned from Toyota’s experience with the Prius and decided to make dedicated EV/PHEV models that don’t have gas-only versions: GM has the Volt, Fisker the Karma, Tesla the Roadster and Model S, Nissan the LEAF, etc. Ford’s is taking a different route…. U.S. and Canada Destroyed More Forest Than Brazil Between 2000-2005

Boreal Forests Losing the Most Ground A new study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science (PNAS) concludes that over a million square kilometers of forest were lost around the world between 2000 and 2005, and that both the U.S. and Canada had higher percentages of forest losses than even Brazil (a country long notorious for deforestation). How does it break down?… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Verizon Converts 501 Utility Vans to Compressed Natural Gas

Photo: Ford Is This a Good Idea? Replacing one fossil fuel might seem like a bad idea, and under certain circumstances I would definitely agree that it is, but sometimes you have to take what you can get while waiting for something better to come along. Many companies, like Verizon, have lots of utility vans that are currently powered by gasoline or diesel and that could benefit from a conversion to compressed natural gas (CNG). For more details on the environmental benefits of that, see below…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Box Designed to Regrow Plants in Deserts Could Save Drought-Stressed California Wineries

Images via Groasis Pieter Hoff, a lily-grower-turned-inventor, took a good look at how seeds grow in dry areas — specifically looking at the way seeds distributed by birds can take root based on the protection and fertilization of the excrement with which it is mixed. Taking a cue from biomimicry, he created the Waterboxx, a highly intriguing way for plants in dry areas to have enough moisture to take root and survive. While it is intended for regrowing vegetation in dessert areas, it could also be a big boon for

The Many Faces of American Power (Slideshow)

Image credit: Mitch Epstein, American Power Across the country, billboards are springing up. They feature an image that is arresting—smoke spewing from a coal plant, a massive power plant behind a school, or the hulking industrial frame of an oil refinery—and a simple question written in plain letters. “What is American Power?” Taken from photographer Mitch Epstein’s book American Power , the question is a starting point for a much deeper exploration—and the path it r… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Cool New Map Shows Marine Protected Areas And Their Status Across North America

Image via CEC There are nearly 2,000 marine protected areas in North America, part of a (hopefully) growing network of coastline areas that are a somewhat safer zone for marine life. MPAs are vital to giving threatened species room to rebound and provide habitat for migrating species. Everyone knows TreeHuggers love a good map, and the North American Environmental Atlas and the Commission for Environmental Cooperation have put out a new map that shows all the protected areas from Canada to Mexico, including the protection status and the parties res… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Can a Tiny Weatherproof Solar Light Bulb Replace Kerosene Lights?

Image via Nokero One small solar lightbulb is looking to be the solution to replace billions of polluting kerosene lamps. According to the Nokero Solar Light Bulb manufacturers, over 1.6 billion people still use fuel-burning devices to get illumination, most of that in the form of kerosene. Fuel lanterns emit 190 million tons of carbon dioxide into the air each year. Yet this little bulb with four small solar panels attached purportedly provides five times the light of kerosene lamps while using 1/200th the energy consumption. It could be a very interest… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Louisiana Senator: Crank Up The Offshore Drilling Rigs Now! (Video)

photo via flickr Sen. Mary Landrieu went on ABC’s “Good Morning America” today to advocate for lifting the moratorium on drilling in the Gulf, this despite the fact that worst oil spill in American history continues.
