Scientology compares itself to the Salvation Army in Senate inquiry

The Church of Scientology has compared itself to The Salvation Army, while defending its benefit to the community in a Senate inquiry. The organisation was scrutinised by an inquiry into legislation proposed by independent senator Nick Xenophon, which would require religious groups to prove what public benefit they provide, before getting tax breaks. Its representative, Virginia Stewart, told the committee its members lent a hand in times of disaster and promoted drug-free messages. “The church believes the proposed bill is inherently flawed and puts at risk the financial future of charities and religions in Australia,” she said. But a Church of Scientology officer from New Zealand, Mike Ferris, told the inquiry that a public interest test in his country had done no harm. Scientology has charitable status in New Zealand, where the Charity Commission of New Zealand was established in 2005. It demands charities clear a public benefit test, and makes them hand over financial statements, which are available publicly online. Mr Ferris said he believed the commission had been fair to the Church of Scientology. “I think the New Zealand Charities Commission has treated us fairly,” he said. “I think it's a fair process.” The inquiry also heard from ex-Scientologists who went public with their shocking experiences earlier this year, when Senator Xenophon twice failed in efforts to have an inquiry into abuse allegations. Among them was James Anderson, who claims he and his wife spent up to $1.2 million on Scientology materials, and Janette Vonthehoff, who says she was coerced into having abortions, and worked long hours for the organisation under duress. Both argued the organisation should not get tax-free status, because it was completely self-serving, and provided no benefit to taxpayers. Mr Ferris compared the glare on Scientology to that previously directed at The Salvation Army. “They weren't welcome here in Australia, they weren't welcome in New Zealand in the early 19th century because of their view against alcohol,” he said. “They were beaten up and they were persecuted, so where do you go?” Mr Ferris was asked why the records on the website of his country's charity commission showed the organisation went from an income of $2.6 million in 2007, to $374,000 in 2008. “I think that drop in income, was actually, from memory, was the exchange rate drop, absolutely,” he said, but later admitted he wasn't certain. The Church of Scientology also committed to handing over its books to the committee for further scrutiny. http://hiscrivener.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/tom-cruise-and-scientology.jpg http://digg.com/politics/Scientology_compares_itself_to_the_Salvation_Army added by: iamfree

Russia Bans Scientology Literature

Works by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard will be added to the country's list of extremist literature for “undermining the traditional spiritual values of the citizens of the Russian Federation,” the Prosecutor General's Office said Wednesday. The ruling — initiated by transport prosecutors in the Siberian city of Surgut and Khanty-Mansiisk customs officers — is the latest use of the hotly debated law on extremism to target systems of belief that are not traditional in Russia. Individuals in possession of extremist materials can be jailed for up to 15 days or fined 3,000 rubles ($100). The law also allows for harsher punishment of suspects convicted of other crimes. http://www.themoscowtimes.com/news/article/scientology-writings-banned-as-extrem… added by: Sexirobot

‘South Park’ Creators Say Muhammad Episode Was Censored Without Their Approval

Trey Parker and Matt Stone claim Comedy Central censored the controversial episode after they submitted it. By Gil Kaufman Trey Parker and Matt Stone Photo: Maury Phillips/ WireImage Over the years, “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have tried to be equal-opportunity offenders on their gleefully trash-talking cartoon, taking on everything from the Catholic church to Scientology, the mentally challenged and just about every other interest group in between with a wildly irreverent, bleep-tastic bent. But when their comic depiction of the Muslim prophet Muhammad drew strong threats for the pair this week, they said their network, Comedy Central, stepped in and took evasive action. The episode in question showed Muhammad — whose depiction in print many Muslim’s consider forbidden — dressed as a bear. A radical Muslim Web site posted a threat against the two if the material aired, which included a reference to the Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, who was brutally murdered in 2004 by Muslim extremists over his documentary about violence against Islamic women. “We have to warn Matt and Trey that what they are doing is stupid and they will probably wind up like Theo van Gogh for airing this show,” read the post. “This is not a threat, but a warning of the reality of what will likely happen to them.” The post was accompanied by a graphic picture of Van Gogh as well as the addresses of the Comedy Central offices in New York and the “South Park” production company in Los Angeles. An accompanying montage featuring photos of Parker and Stone and Van Gogh over audio from a radical Islamic preacher ends with the words “the dust will never settle down.” In the end, all references to Muhammad, including long stretches of dialogue and the offending image — which was covered up by a large black “censored” bar — were bleeped from the show by Comedy Central in the second of a two-part episode. On Thursday night, the duo posted a statement about the controversy on their Web site, writing, “In the 14 years we’ve been doing South Park we have never done a show that we couldn’t stand behind. We delivered our version of the show to Comedy Central and they made a determination to alter the episode. It wasn’t some meta-joke on our part. Comedy Central added the bleeps. In fact, Kyle’s customary final speech was about intimidation and fear. It didn’t mention Muhammad at all but it got bleeped too. We’ll be back next week with a whole new show about something completely different and we’ll see what happens to it.” A spokesperson for Comedy Central (which is owned by MTV Networks) had no comment. The offending episode was set up last week in a show in which some of the hundreds of celebrities who’ve been skewered by “South Park” over the years threaten to file a class-action lawsuit against the titular Colorado town if South Park didn’t fly in the prophet, who they believe has the power to save them from ridicule. In the second part, which aired this week, Muhammad does arrive, dressed in a bear costume. The “South Park” site notes that the pair do not have the approval to stream their original version of the episode online, so it’s unclear which bleeps were theirs and which were inserted by Comedy Central. This is not the first time Parker and Stone have walked this fine line. In a two-part 2006 episode about censorship, they tried to depict Muhammad but were censored by the network, though the prophet did make an appearance in a 2001 episode as part of the Super Best Friends, a superhero-like gathering of religious icons. The network’s decision was likely inspired not just by the Van Gogh murder and threat, but by the international uproar in 2005 over cartoons in a Danish newspaper that showed various images of Muhammad, including one in which the prophet wore a bomb as a turban.

Sarah Palin Better Not Have to Use One of Those Damn Straws That Doesn’t Bend

Watergate, it’s not, but a document found in a California state university trash bin last week shed interesting light into Sarah Palin’s upcoming speech there. On Tuesday, California Attorney General Jerry Brown said his office would look into finances of the California State University, Stanislaus Foundation. Why? For potentially violating ethics laws by keeping details of Palin’s contract secret. The former half-term Alaska Governor is scheduled to speak at a June 25 gala hosted by the foundation to commemorate the university’s 50th anniversary. Brown’s investigation was prompted in part, by a group of CSU Stanislaus students who retrieved five pages of the contract from a campus trash bin. This after hearing administrators were engaged in shredding documents – and some stuff they allegedly shredded paints a diva-like picture of Palin. The contract detailed the alleged politician’s requirements for her visit, including first-class flights from Anchorage to California – if she flies commercial. If not, “the private aircraft MUST BE a Lear 60 or larger,” the contract specifies (large enough to accommodate her ego entourage, in other words). The renowned nuclear weapons expert also must be given a suite at a deluxe hotel, and a lectern stocked with two water bottles with bendable straws. Regular straws and the deal is off. You got that?! The document, dated March 16, does not include specific compensation details for Sarah Palin, who commands speaking fees as high as $100,000. “This is not about Sarah Palin,” Brown said. “The issues are public disclosure and financial accountability in organizations embedded in universities.” Come on, it’s a little about Sarah Palin . Doesn’t sound like a scandal worthy of major attention … well, besides perhaps on the Sarah Palin Network .

Kate Gosselin and Kids: Moving to Hollywood?

We’re not in Pennsylvania anymore (they may be saying soon)! Since she’s become, like, a major star, is Kate Gosselin moving her giant brood to Hollywood? We hear the mother of eight is looking for a home in SoCal as well as a new agent, hoping to snag a mansion big enough for her kids (and a showbiz career). Could her move to, and new life in L.A. be the subject of her new reality show ? “Now that Kate has tasted the excitement of Hollywood, there’s no way that she’s going to return to Pennsylvania,” a friend, which she apparently has, says. Kate, who avoided elimination on Dancing with the Stars again last night, is “looking at homes in the Hollywood Hills in the $2 million range,” insisting on “a pool, at least six bedrooms, an outdoor hot tub and a recording studio!” LOL . What’s next, Jon Gosselin insisting his new home has a treadmill? Is Kate Gosselin obsessed with fame? [Photo: PacificCoastNewsOnline.com] Speaking of Jon, this might actually help his lawsuit over Kate’s absentee mom status and quest for her own fame, rather than on being a good parent. Sources say Kate has been meeting with agents, managers and publicists. Of course, someone has to feed those cute little kids however they can do it. It’s sure as hell not you either, Jon. “Kate really wants to be a movie star,” an insider laughably says . “Kate thinks that after Jennifer Aniston’s last few films didn’t do so well, America needs a new girl next door. And who better to fill Jen’s shoes than Kate!” This quote has to be made up, right? We hope so, because if a grating nag with more baggage than LAX airport fashions herself a girl next door, she may be the most delusional person ever.
