Oscars 2012 Predictions: Best Actress

‘The Help’ star Viola Davis will likely help herself to a statuette on Sunday. By Amy Wilkinson Viola Davis in “The Help” Photo: DreamWorks The Oscars love nothing more than a role that allows an actress to a) portray a historical figure or b) completely transform herself physically. (And, lest we forget, some combination thereof, i.e. Charlize Theron’s chilling turn as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 2003’s “Monster”). This year’s Best Actress field is no exception, with four of the five nominees falling squarely into one of these categories. Representing real-life ladies we have Meryl Streep as first female British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in “The Iron Lady” and Michelle Williams as breathy blond bombshell Marilyn Monroe in “My Week With Marilyn.” In the transformation category is Rooney Mara, all pierced and tatted as punk-hacker Lisbeth Salander in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” and Glenn Close playing a woman playing a man in the period drama “Albert Nobbs.” And the wildcard nominee? “The Help” star Viola Davis. Yet, despite her non-conformity, Davis may just be the lady going home Sunday night with Oscar. Can anyone top her? Here are our predictions for Best Actress. Who will win : The big-screen adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s 2009 novel has been riding a wave of accolades this awards season, notching several wins at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, including awards for Davis, co-star Octavia Spencer and the entire ensemble cast. (In fact, we’ve already predicted a win for Spencer in the Best Supporting Actress category too.) Despite Williams and Streep both scoring Golden Globes for their respective roles, we expect Davis triumph thanks to her moving portrayal of Southern maid Aibileen Clark in this racially charged, yet uplifting film. Who should win : Davis is a strong contender to be sure, but going on sheer dedication alone, the trophy should go to relative newcomer Mara. The girl pierced her nipple for goodness’ sake! Mara has so embodied Stieg Larsson’s embattled heroine that we’ve been having a hard time separating her on-screen persona from her off-screen, as she continues to walk carpets sporting Salander’s raven locks and even darker wardrobe. Sure, the film didn’t perform as well as many had hoped, but it had nothing to do with Mara’s gritty performance. As it turns out, we’re a fool for a good transformation role too. How Did Alec Baldwin Lose 30 Pounds in Four Months?

We knew Jack Donaghy looked sharper in a suit this season on 30 Rock . Backstage at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, Alec Baldwin told Access Hollywood he was diagnosed with diabetes in May 2011 and proceeded to lose about 30 pounds in four months. His trick? “I gave up sugar,” the actor said, adding that “I do Pilates and spin… When we’re shooting and I can’t work out, I just have to eat less. So I’m very conscious of that.” Baldwin – who took home the trophy for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series at the event

Sofia Vergara & Sarah Hyland Make A Great Pair

Obviously I didn’t watch the Screen Actors Guild Awards last night, I don’t need to see a group celebrities pat each other on the back for playing dress up, but I know a couple of winners when I see them. Here are Sofia Vergara and Sarah Hyland looking sexy with their tacky statuettes. These two definitely make a great pair, I know there’s a pretty big age gap between them, but it still works for me. Their show should have a lot more scenes with these two, preferably set in a hot tub or water park. The scenes just write themselves.

Roman Polanski to Finally Collect Swiss Award

OK, let’s try this again: Two years after Roman Polanski’s journey to Zurich to collect a lifetime achievement award turned into jail stay followed by months of international legal and diplomatic intrigue , the 78-year-old director will return to the city’s film festival to finally receive his honor in person. The Sept. 27 ceremony will precede the world premiere of what has been identified only as a “full-length non-fiction film.” Any guesses? [ Variety ]

Actor Pleads Guilty to Pirating SAG Screener of Black Swan

During the rush to get awards season hopefuls in front of various guilds, the studios have turned to increasingly digital means of distributing screeners to voters. Theatrical screenings and snail-mailed DVD screeners have given way to iTunes codes that allow recipients to download films directly for viewing on laptops, iPads, and other devices. It’s a bold move dependent on a trust that none of the nearly 100,000 members of the Screen Actors Guild, for example, will turn around and pirate said films to the internet. But that’s exactly what one SAG member did last winter.

Lindsay Lohan Sues Pitbull Over Disparaging Lyrics

Lindsay Lohan is suing rapper Pitbull over disparaging lyrics in one of his songs. He does zing her pretty good, but a lawsuit? Get outta town. The hit song, “Give Me Everything,” contains this line: Hustlers move aside, so I’m tiptoein’, to keep flowin’, I got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan . Oooh, that one hurt! Pitbull – Give Me Everything ft. Ne-Yo, Afrojack, Nayer LiLo claims in her lawsuit that “the lyrics, by virtue of its wide appeal, condemnation, excoriation, disparaging or defamatory statements by the defendants regarding the plaintiff are destined to do irreparable harm to the plaintiff.” Yes, a PITBULL SONG is likely to to her irreparable harm. Lindsay, who LOL-tastically claims she is “a professional actor of good repute and standing in the Screen Actors Guild,” is suing under New York civil rights laws safeguarding one’s name from being exploited for commercial purposes. Lindsay Lohan alleges the song causes her “to be associated in connection with defendants” and seeks to halt broadcasting of the song. Good luck.

Gwyneth Paltrow To Duet With Matthew Morrison On His Debut Album

The ‘Country Strong’ star and the ‘Glee’ actor have recorded a version of ‘Over the Rainbow’ for his upcoming release. By Aly Semigran Gwyneth Paltrow and Matt Morrison Photo: GETTY/ Michael Tran Holly Holliday will be making sweet music with Will Schuester once more. Translating from Gleek speak, Oscar-winning-actress-turned-singing-staple Gwyneth Paltrow will be crooning yet another number with Matthew Morrison. Entertainment Weekly reports that Paltrow will appear on Morrison’s upcoming solo album, which is due out on May 10. On “Glee,” recurring guest Paltrow — who plays flaky substitute teacher Holliday — has covered Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” Cee Lo Green’s “Forget You” and Prince’s “Kiss,” the latter of which she performed with Morrison’s Mr. Schue. Now, the Golden Globe-nominated Morrison is having the “Country Strong” star help him out on his debut record, on a tune that’s become almost synonymous with his “Glee” character: “Over the Rainbow.” As Morrison told EW, “People kind of know me for that song now.” The Broadway-trained actor not only used the timeless “Wizard of Oz” number for his “Glee” audition, but also sang it with co-star Mark Salling (who released his own solo effort, Pipe Dreams , in 2010) during the season 1 finale — both times accompanying himself on ukulele. “I wanted to do a duet with a female. I thought that was a good song to do, and we really did a different arrangement of it,” Morrison explained about the version he recorded for his album. “It’s a lot of strings, and it’s beautiful.” Morrison admitted that he felt nervous about approaching Paltrow to see if she’d participate in the recording. “The hardest part of doing this album was asking these people favors, like Elton [John] and her,” he said. “I’m so not that guy.” In addition to Paltrow and John, Morrison also has ‘NSYNC member JC Chasez lined up for a duet on a song titled “Dancing in the Rain.” While there’s no word yet on who, if any, of his “Glee” castmates will appear on the record — both had championed to get their own duets on the album — co-star Jenna Ushkowitz has already been singing its praises . Ushkowitz, who plays glee-club member Tina Cohen-Chang on the show, told MTV News on the red carpet of the Screen Actors Guild Awards in January, “His music is really great.” She went on to say that Morrison “made his own sound” on the album, while adding that it was “a little bit of Justin Timberlake … [and] symphonic-sounding.” Morrison has yet to announce a title for album, though the actor did reveal to MTV News at Clive Davis’ post-Grammy bash in February that ” My Name ” has been considered as a possibility.
