Weekday Vegetarian: White Bean and Arugula Salad with Lemon Dill Vinaigrette

Photo: Kelly Rossiter I guess like most home vegetable gardeners , I am having my share of hits and misses this season. Some enterprising little critter ate all of my carrot tops as soon as they started to come out, so that was the end of that. My beets were doing fabulously, but something has started to eat them as well, which I find much more upsetting. My

The Bachelorette Spoilers: Ali Fedotowsky Chooses …

All season long, The Bachelorette spoilers we’ve reported have been spot-on. So while we can’t personally vouch for what follows, bear that fact in mind. Since before Ali Fedotowsky even began her quest for love, we’ve known the identity of her final two suitors this season – and the one she does not pick. What’s eluded us, and the soothsayer of The Bachelorette spoilers , Reality Steve, is the end result. Is Ali engaged? Are they dating? Is she still single? The lowdown was always that one of the finalists, whose name THG has withheld here for those of you who like to remain in suspense, was eliminated. The other finalist’s fate was unclear. Either Ali Fedotowsky chose him and they’re engaged, she chose him and they’re just dating, or she chose neither. That question has now been answered with 99.9 percent certainty. Ali Fedotowsky’s final decision has been debated for weeks . There is no gimmicky ending with someone returning, just the two men from which Ali must make a heart-wrenching choice – one likely to leave many fans disappointed. WARNING: Do not read on if you do not want to read SERIOUS spoilers for the end of this season. This isn’t vague, Us Weekly-style nonsense, it’s a dead giveaway. On the season finale of The Bachelorette , Ali Fedotowsky chooses … Nobody . Sorry, but that’s what overwhelming evidence suggests, courtesy of Steve . For almost a month now, we’ve known Chris Lambton and Roberto Martinez are the final two. The guy she didn’t pick – the one whose fate was clear – is Chris Lambton. He will be rejected at the final rose ceremony, leaving Roberto and Ali to … well, about that. All indications suggest that Ali is single today and didn’t choose Roberto Martinez either. Five different sources report that she’s single, up from three just days ago. Again, you can choose not to believe this if you like, and there’s always a chance Steve is wrong, sure. He’s admitted as much. But he’s never led us astray in the past. Weeks ago, the fact that she didn’t pick Chris became clear. However, the news that Ali picked Roberto never materialized. Evidence that she’s single has – in spades. Well, what do you think? Do you believe it – and are you disappointed in the result? Is there a chance this is all bogus and she and Roberto will live happily ever after? Discuss The Bachelorette spoilers herein by leaving a comment below .

Rachel Bilson & Hayden Christensen: It May Be Over

Engaged couple Rachel Bilson and Hayden Christensen are “taking a break,” according to sources, one that may lead to a permanent end to their relationship. Bilson flashed a ringless finger to Us Weekly on the red carpet of the Take No Prisoners event in L.A. Wednesday when asked how wedding plans are going. “No, no plans,” she said, pointing to her bare hand. “No nothing.” Well then. Quite the awkward moment for the reporter! The couple, who co-starred in 2008 action flick Jumper , and got engaged in 2009, are “taking about a month off” and will revisit their future together then. The self-imposed break began about two weeks ago, after Rachel watched him attempt to act in the Star Wars trilogy. Just kidding. But he was pretty bad. We wish the couple the best … whatever that may be .

Report: Half the Jersey Shore Cast to Be Fired

Earlier this year, we told you Jersey Shore was looking for a new crop of fake-tanned faces to integrate with or flat-out replace its familiar, fake-tanned ones. Now it looks like a four and four scenario: Four stay, four go. Then Ronnie hops in a 4×4 and raises all sorts of hell when he realizes he’s just gotten a pink slip. That’s the rumor. MTV sources say this season’s footage of Ronnie Magro, Sammi Giancola , Vinny Guadagnino and Angelina Pivarnick has been “underwhelming.” At least according to the network brass. As for replacing them for Season 3, one source said, “They should be very worried .” No fist-pumping for you, Ron-Ron. As for The Situation, Snooki, Pauly D and JWoww, they’re reportedly sold for next season, and may be melded with a fresh group of guidos/ettes at that time. This in spite of The Situation’s diva-like antics . Guy brings in viewers!

The Only Thing Crazier Than Mike Tyson? Mike Tyson And Tupac

You know how there are moments in life that are so incredible, they defy our understanding at the time? From MTV News , Mike Tyson describes his first meeting with Tupac Shakur: “Magic Johnson had a party at the Palladium in Los Angeles. … I came outside. I was talking to the people running the door. They were friends of mine. They wouldn’t let these guys in, Tupac and them. I said, ‘Man, let these guys in. You remember how it was with us.’ “So they let him in. ‘Pac had said, ‘Hold up for one minute,’ and he brought back 200 more people. Next thing I knew, it was over. I hear somebody on the mic — he took the mic. Him and his guys got the mic somehow and started rapping. The whole crowd started going crazy. They loved him. The guys from Digital Underground introduced him to me. They said, ‘This is Tupac.’ I met him, he was very young. He was very happy, vivacious. While we pause before the jump, imagine Mike Tyson’s pronunciation of “vivacious.” As for the story of Tyson and Tupac, I’m shocked the world didn’t split in half with those two in the same place. Listen to Tyson’s description of Tupac . It’s eerie: He had a lot of hostility. I think it was just misguided and misdirected. It was obvious he was a genius, he was a prodigy. Whoa! He was just amazing as far as his energy was concerned. He was explosive. … His presence and his energy … the word I’m looking for is fearless. He came across as fearless. When you come across somebody that’s fearless, you’re a little bit in awe. You’re like. ‘Whoa!’ He’s ready to blow, too, at any moment; very volatile. Doesn’t that sound like someone describing Mike Tyson? Without getting too abstract over all this, we’re talking about two of the most complex and polarizing individuals of the past 20 years, both of whom seemed to send ripples through society just by sheer force of nature. Here’s Tyson recounting Tupac’s visit to him in jail: He was standing on the table, started talking. All the people in the prison started going crazy. … The white prisoners, the guards, everybody went crazy in this redneck prison. They went nuts when he came in there. … He was prolific. He was talking, having a ball. … He was very territorial. He was an interesting guy. He was different than any other rapper I had ever met from a philosophical perspective.” Really, there were layers to both men that were beyond our comprehension when they were at the height of their powers. Not until Tupac’s death in 1996 and Tyson’s fall from grace shortly thereafter did we realize just how unique they both were. Powerful, paranoid, and profane. Vilified, venerated, and vulnerable. But most of all, they were impossibly magnetic . Like no boxer or rapper that we’d seen before or since. Humans like Mike Tyson and Tupac Shakur just don’t come along very often. My less abstract reaction? People always talk about their “dream golf foursome.” One of those fun hypotheticals at dinner parties. But I defy you think of a more entertaining trio to hit the links with than these three. In 1993, Tupac Shakur, Mike Tyson, and Eazy-E. Now that would make for an entertaining trip to the country club.

Wakefield and Castleford struggle to square circle in golden triangle | Andy Wilson

Wakefield and Castleford – like Featherstone – provide rich talent for rugby league but financial problems could consign them to the Championship. Time to mention the M-word? Since the spring of 1995, it has been probably the most toxic subject in British rugby league, and therefore avoided by anyone with any sense. But harsh financial reality has driven the possibility of a merger between Wakefield Trinity and Castleford Tigers very firmly back on to the agenda. With less than a year before each of the existing 14 Super League clubs will have to submit applications for the next round of licences, the old Yorkshire rivals are in serious trouble. Not so much on the field, where Wakefield in particular continue to punch well above their weight, currently only one place and two points behind Hull KR, who occupy the eighth play-off position. But last Sunday’s home capitulation against Wigan suggested that even the renowned tactical and motivational abilities of John Kear and his coaching team will struggle to come close to a repeat of last year’s remarkable fifth-placed finish. That is not surprising, because for various reasons Kear has lost Danny Brough, Terry Newton, Shane Tronc and Cain Southernwood from the squad with which Trinity started the season, and the club’s tight financial situation has allowed him to sign only comparatively cut-price replacements in Paul Cooke, Danny Kirmond and Charlie Leaeno. Castleford are only two points behind Wakefield after their nervy win against the Catalans Dragons on Tuesday night, but they too are running with a cheaper squad than they had in February, after releasing the expensive but underperforming Australian scrum-half Brent Sherwin several months before the end of his contract. Neither of the clubs can afford to spend close to the £1.65m salary cap that the Super League this week voted to retain for 2011. But an even greater worry for their supporters is the long-running and ongoing uncertainty over their plans to move to new grounds a couple of junctions apart on the M62. The Rugby Football League has already made it pretty clear that without tangible progress on those grounds there will be no new licence from 2012. So officials at both clubs are only too aware that as things stand, they may well be competing for a single Super League place from 2012. But there must also be a chance that neither bid will be accepted, leaving Wakey and Cas with the stark choice of standing alone in the Championship – or coming together to stay in the Super League. Featherstone Rovers, who complete the “golden triangle” of clubs where so many outstanding players have been nurtured over the last century or more, are the interested third party, just as they were when the merger was first mooted – with a hamfisted attempt to impose it from above as part of the original Super League plans. They are currently sitting pretty, six points clear at the top of the Championship table, and enjoying their best season since 1998 under the former Leeds coach Daryl Powell. They also have arguably the best ground of the three, with realistic-sounding plans to develop it further rather than moving to a new site, and Rovers would have every right to some smug satisfaction were they to be awarded a licence from 2012 ahead of Wakefield and Cas, after missing out on the original Super League cut in 1996 merely because they happened to have had a bad season at exactly the wrong time. But there is no guarantee of that happening, either – and even if it did, it is hard to see Featherstone being any stronger in the Super League than Castleford and Wakefield are currently. As in 1996, there are powerful, logical reasons for the three rivals to come together and form a club that could challenge for honours on a regular basis, rather than scramble to survive. It is the bigger clubs, and especially Leeds, who benefit most from the current situation, as it allows them to pick off the best players from arguably the game’s most fertile nursery – either as youngsters, as in the case of Rob Burrow who played his junior rugby with Featherstone Lions, or when they have established themselves, as Gareth Ellis had with Wakefield before joining the Rhinos. Already this season Wakefield have lost Brough to Huddersfield and Southernwood to Bradford, and Castleford are as powerless to prevent Michael Shenton leaving for St Helens at the end of his contract as Featherstone were when another England centre, Paul Newlove, moved to Bradford and then Saints in the mid-1990s. Despite the levelling effect of the salary cap, which brings such sides as Leeds, Wigan, Saints, Hull and Warrington within more realistic reach of smaller clubs, it is now more than 16 years since any of the three in question won a major trophy – and even Castleford’s memorable triumph over Wigan in the 1994 Regal Trophy final is slightly soured by the knowledge that building the team to win it left the club with horrendous financial problems. But rugby league is a passionate game where supporters’ commitment to their local clubs has tended to outweigh cold, hard logic – and there’s nothing necessarily wrong in that. It is for those supporters – including the wealthier ones who keep the clubs afloat – to decide what happens next and nobody has yet been brave enough even to suggest publicly the idea of a merger. Instead Wakefield and Cas continue on their frantic scramble to start work on their new grounds by this time next year, while battling equally desperately to remain competitive on the field – and on this season’s evidence, an increasing proportion of those supporters choose to stay away. I’m not daft enough to advocate a merger. It’s not my place to do so. The sole purpose of this column is to note the real danger that Wakefield, Castleford and Featherstone will all be playing in the Championship from 2012, and that the area’s young players will no longer have even a struggling Super League option. Given that background, do not be surprised if someone finally sticks their head above the parapet, and asks the game’s most difficult question. Thoughts on the above welcome as always, from inside or outside the golden triangle, and also your answers to a hypothetical question that sprung to mind watching Queensland’s crushing victory in the second State of Origin match from Brisbane this week: how would England do against New South Wales?
