30 Seconds To Mars’ VMA Arrival, Uncut: Watch It Now!

See the band’s grand entrance — glitter bomb and all. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Sohyung Kang/ MTV News In the days leading up to the Video Music Awards , you probably read all about 30 Seconds to Mars’ much-hyped arrival on the white carpet, a tribute to their VMA-winning “Kings and Queens” clip , which featured an army of their bicycle-riding pals and, somewhat unexpectedly, a whole lot of glitter and chicken feathers too. “We had a lot of friends who were doing mass, night bike rides,” 30STM frontman Jared Leto told MTV News on the carpet. “And all of those great people [are] back here [now].” But thanks to the rather overzealous glitter-bombing antics of some of those friends — and some ancillary chicken-feather-related activities too — you probably didn’t actually get to see 30STM’s full arrival … mostly because drummer Shannon Leto caught some glitter in the eye and had to be attended to by EMTs (something his brother Jared alluded to in a Twitter post following the show). Thankfully, Shannon was OK — we’re sure winning Best Rock Video took some of the sting away — so now, with the VMAs behind us (and Shannon having recovered sight in his eye), we figured it was finally time to roll out 30 Seconds to Mars’ full white-carpet arrival. See how many extras from “Kings and Queens” you can spot, and watch for the moment when Leto catches glitter in the face and stumbles off camera. Make sure you’re wearing safety goggles, of course. What did you think of 30STM’s grand entrance? Let us know in the comments! The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. 30 Seconds To Mars Caught In ‘Glitter Bomb’ On Way To VMAs

Best Rock Video winners found themselves strewn in glitter when arriving at the VMAs Sunday night. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars arrives at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage If anyone thought that 30 Seconds to Mars ‘ partial re-creation of their VMA-winning video, “Kings and Queens,” when they entered the big show’s white carpet would prove to be the most dangerous part of the band’s appearance on Sunday night, they were wrong. When MTV News caught up with the band as they hit the white carpet, frontman Jared Leto explained that they had not only braved L.A. traffic for their entrance, they also endured an explosion of sorts. “We were in the middle of a glitter bomb. The entrance was fun and chaotic and crazy.”

30STM score Moonman for ‘Kings and Queens,’ beating out Florence and the Machine and Paramore. By James Dinh 30 Seconds to Mars at the 2010 VMAs Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage The presenters of the Best Rock Video may not have known what it’s like to be rockers, but they sure met a few when they awarded 30 Seconds to Mars with their win at the 2010 Video Music Awards . The California band’s video for “Kings and Queens” earned them their first Moonman of the night, beating out Florence and the Machine, MGMT, Muse and Paramore. “Thank you. This is amazing. This award really doesn’t so much belong to us. It belongs to the most amazing family of friends and fans around the world that we could’ve have ever imagined,” frontman Jared Leto said while accepting the award. “We’re happy to accept it on their behalf. Thank you to MTV. Thank you to our label, to our management company. We’re really proud to be here, proud to share it with all the other artists. It’s been an amazing adventure, so thank you,” they continued. Immediately after walking offstage, the band posed for a photo with “Jackass” star Chris Pontius … who was trying to fit his penis into a mouse costume. Then, they told MTV News how it felt to win. “I am so grateful … I truly didn’t think we would get it,” Jared Leto beamed. “When I heard Paramore’s name, I thought we wouldn’t get it for sure,” guitarist Tomo Milicevic added. “Honestly,” Leto continued, “right now I feel so humble and so grateful.” Their Bartholomew Cubbins-directed clip features a legion of bikers making their way through the streets of Los Angeles at night. In addition to their Best Rock Video win, the group is also nominated for Best Art Direction, Best Direction and the night’s coveted Video of the Year award . The band previously snagged the MTV2 Award for their video “The Kill” in 2006. 30 Seconds to Mars arrived to this year’s ceremony like no other, riding up on bikes in a fashion similar to their “Kings and Queens” video. 30 Seconds To Mars, Ke$ha Plan Big VMA Arrivals

Can this year’s nominees rival the elephants and yachts of years past? By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars Photo: Myriam Santos/ Kayda For much of the past decade, the MTV Video Music Awards has really been two shows: The one where they hand out the Moonmen, and the one that occurs on the red carpet, where the stars try their very best to outdo each other with over-the-top arrivals. From yachts to 18-wheel trucks, elephants to horse-drawn carriages, how you arrive at the VMAs has become just as important as whether you take home an award. As you can probably imagine, sometimes, things get a little crazy. “Usually, artists don’t let us know [how they’re arriving] until the last minute, which makes things interesting,” Video Music Awards Pre-Show executive producer Ryan Kroft told MTV News. “A lot of times, they’ll want to do things like land a hot-air balloon on the carpet, or drive a car down the carpet, but generally, the fire marshal frowns on those kinds of things, so we have to tell them ‘no.’ ” Still, there are plenty of ideas that do get the green light, and they’re just as epic as the stars that thought them up. And this year’s VMA arrivals are no different, though for aesthetic reasons, they’re slightly scaled back. “In New York, we had stars arriving on a fire truck, a double-decker bus, but that wouldn’t play this year,” Kroft said. “The carpet is designed to look like the stars are arriving at a Hollywood Hills mansion — white, chrome, glass — so having someone arrive with a marching band would seem somewhat out of place.” But there are big arrivals nonetheless: One of the biggest involves 30 Seconds to Mars , who have already started touting their entrance as being thoroughly crazy. “30 Seconds to Mars are recreating a scene from their ‘Kings and Queens’ video ,” Kroft explained. “They’ll have an army of bicyclists arriving with them, and they’ll be riding bikes themselves. Most of the bicyclists are from the video.” Going equally big is Ke$ha , who has a few surprises ready for the VMA carpet. We don’t want to give it all away, but here’s what we can reveal: “Ke$ha has big plans for the carpet. I can’t talk about all of them, but she is arriving in a Delorean, which she got herself,” Kroft said. “It’ll be like ‘Back to the Future.’ ” And, in keeping with grand tradition, there are still plenty of stars who haven’t said how they’re going to be arriving — Jay Sean is planning something “big and sexy,” Soulja Boy Tell’em has some swaggadocious plans in the works, and Bruno Mars is still plotting, too — and then, there’s Lady Gaga, who … well, you never know what she’ll do. “We still don’t know what some people are doing,” Kroft laughed. “The only way you’ll know is to tune in to the VMA Pre-Show and watch.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday. The party starts with MTV News’ VMA Pre-Show at 8 p.m., followed by the main event at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for Best New Artist from now through Sunday. 30 Seconds To Mars Plot ‘Crazy’ Entrance For 2010 VMAs

Jared Leto likens it to ‘open-heart surgery on the dance floor.’ By James Montgomery 30 Seconds To Mars Photo: MTV News You would probably think — based on, well, practically everything — that Jared Leto is not the kind of guy who likes to play things close to the vest (or studded leather jacket, or whatever). And in most instances, you’d be right. But not when it comes to 30 Seconds To Mars’ arrival at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards . Because while he’s certainly got big plans, he’s not about to reveal them just yet. “We have an entrance plan that has never, ever been done before in the history of the VMAs,” Leto told MTV News on Tuesday. “Basically, it’s like ‘Seinfeld’ but not … it’s like open-heart surgery on the dance floor, it’s like taking your eyeballs out and putting them in the opposite sockets. It’s going to be crazy.” That sounds, uh, interesting. And while we suspect he’s kidding, Leto and his 30 Seconds to Mars mates definitely have something in the works for the big show, which airs Sunday, September 12, live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. After all, 30 Seconds to Mars are nominated for four awards, including Best Rock Video and Video of the Year for their epic “Kings and Queens” clip . And so, somewhat appropriately, their grand entrance will probably be inspired by that video. Though, again, Leto isn’t about to give away any secrets. “It could, quite possibly, pay homage to the ‘Kings and Queens’ video,” he said. “We may be arriving in a way that encourages treating your planet in a better way. … We will hopefully be arriving in style, and [be doing] something different and fun and something I believe is appropriate.” So, bikes? Maybe. Though nothing is set in stone just yet … there are still backroom deals to be made and palms to be greased. Both of which, as luck would have it, are 30STM specialties. “We are plotting and planning the arrival of 30 Seconds to Mars, and hopefully, we will be appearing in a very special way, but we haven’t got the final approval [yet],” Leto smiled. “We only do behind-the-scenes campaigning. We’re into bribery and things like that.” The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. Fans can go to VMA.MTV.com (or text VMA to 97979 if they are Verizon subscribers) to vote for the winners in general categories, including Best New Artist, from now through September 12. 30 Seconds To Mars Save Souls In ‘Closer To The Edge’ Video

‘Yes, this is a cult,’ says video that aims to capture fans’ perspective of the live 30STM experience. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars’ “Closer to the Edge” Photo: EMI With their brand new “Closer to the Edge” video — which premiered on Monday (August 16) — 30 Seconds to Mars have joined a special fraternity. For about as long as there have been rock videos, there have also been “road videos,” grand testaments to the highs and lows, the triumphs and tragedies, the sheer excitement and terrifying monotony that comes with being a touring rock-and-roll band. Documenting your life on the bus is as much a rite of passage as getting your first platinum plaque (or bedding your first groupie), and as such, basically every rock act worth their salt has, at some point, released a road video … and then released it again on the “Live” DVD. Though, in keeping with pretty much everything they do, 30STM have taken the concept to dizzying, unabashedly all-encompassing heights. Though road videos feature plenty of live footage (as does “Edge”), they are rarely — if ever — about the live experience. Rather, they are about the band themselves, the three or four dudes who sleep on bunks, sign autographs, eat at all-night diners and gaze longingly out the window of their bus. The fans are just part of the background … the occasional slow-motion shot or the supportive arms that keep the lead singer aloft when he crowd surfs. “Closer to the Edge” is different because it is darn-near 100 percent about the fans themselves: their lives and loves and fears, and how all of those things motivated them to attend a 30STM show in the first place. They are the stars, they are the main attraction. The members of the band are basically secondary characters in the thing. Even Jared Leto’s foot-high pink Mohawk. The video — directed by Leto, under the nom-de-film Bartholomew Cubbins — opens with testimonials from sad-eyed 30STM fans, espousing their views on life (“My philosophy is: Don’t regret anything you do … because in the end, it makes you who you are”). Each of them is alone in their own particular way, it would seem, though, through the music of 30 Seconds to Mars, they find a space in which they can coexist with others just like them. They may be outcasts in their high schools or towns, but at a 30STM show, they are anything but. They are, as a title card in the video puts it, part of “The Family.” And that message of inclusion is driven home in a series of stats the video throws at us (“27 Countries. 89 Cities. 1 Band. And All 1,363,930 of You”) and the message, “Yes, This Is a Cult.” Provided you are not curdled with cynicism, it’s a rather amazing idea. 30 Seconds to Mars are less of a touring rock band than they are a barnstorming ministry. They aim to uplift, to inspire, to save, and “Closer to the Edge” is their document of that mission. Sure, there are moments that sort of make you snicker — the sheer bombast of the entire thing, the fact that this is a “film … presented by 30 Seconds to Mars,” the image of Leto’s pink Mohawk peering contemplatively over the Grand Canyon — but there’s no denying the power of seeing tens of thousands of fans finding a simultaneous salvation, of a crowd of individuals becoming one. It’s what rock and roll is supposed to be about, really: inclusion. What do you think of the new 30 Seconds to Mars video? Share your own reviews in the comments below.
