Starbucks and International Paper "Close the Loop", Recycling Cups into Cups

Starbucks has very proudly announced the completion of a pilot project where they have proven that paper cups can be recycled into new paper cups. They call it a breakthrough in their “goal of ensuring 100 percent of its cups are reusable or recyclable by 2015” In a press release they say: “This innovation represents an important milestone in our journey,” said Jim Hanna, Starbucks director of Environmental Impact. “We still have a lot of work to do to reach our 2015 goal, but we’re now in a much stronger position to build momentum across … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Steven Chu: China Giving U.S. a Clean Technology "Sputnik Moment"

Photos: Wikipedia, Public domain. Investing Now for a Better Future In a speech at the National Press Club, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu made the case for more R&D in the U.S., especially in the energy sector (“the 2010 federal budget is $3.6 trillion, of which 0.14 percent went for research and development related to energy”). Dr. Chu explains why this is essential for both economic development and to meet environmental challenges, and he compares China’s progress in clean technologies and energy to the wake up call that was the launch of the Sputnik satellite by the Soviet Union…. How can we balance increasing transpareny with the need for secrecy regarding sensitive information?

In the wake of controversy around the latest documents to appear on Wikileaks, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton has denounced the release of the cables as an “attack on the international community.” Clinton, and others in government, maintain that diplomacy often requires confidentiality to be effective, and that the release of information by sites like Wikileaks could compromise military or diplomatic operations. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and other defenders of the site, however, say that such information should be used to hold the government accountable. In a world where the public demands more transparancy and technology makes information more accessible, how can we balance accountability and transparancy with the need for confidentiality around sensitive government and military operations? added by: sgwhites

NBC’s Lauer: WikiLeaks is Merely a ‘Messenger’ For Classified Material

On Monday's Today show, NBC's Matt Lauer downplayed the criminal factor in the release of hundreds of thousands of classified diplomatic communiques by WikiLeaks, twice labeling the website as only a ” messenger ” for the documents. Both Lauer and NBC correspondent Andrea Mitchell insisted the State Department “crossed a line” by ordering diplomats to spy on foreign diplomats at the United Nations. The NBC anchor interviewed Republican Congressman Peter King seven minutes into the 7 am Eastern hour on this latest release of confidential documents by WikiLeaks. Midway through the segment, Lauer raised the espionage issue: “Were you surprised to hear that Secretary of State Clinton and her predecessor, Secretary of State Rice, asked their diplomats to, in effect, spy on diplomats at the United Nations, asking for things like credit card numbers, computer passwords, DNA, fingerprints? This does cross a line, doesn't it? ” read more

Kathleen Parker Falsely Claims Alexander Hamilton was an Illegal Immigrant

On Thursday's Parker-Spitzer, CNN's Kathleen Parker bizarrely and inaccurately claimed that Alexander Hamilton came to the United States illegally and drafted the Constitution: “Let's remember… a lot of Americans did come through the back door such as Alexander Hamilton. He got off the boat from the West Indies, and all he did was write the Constitution and become the first Secretary of the Treasury .” Parker raised this false history during a discussion of Pedro Ramirez, Fresno State University's student body president, who was outed as an illegal immigrant by a student newspaper . After playing clips from Ramirez and his opponent during the student election, who is also the president of the Fresno State College Republicans, the CNN host displayed sympathy for the college student: “This is kind of a classic though, isn't it, really? I mean, you've the college Republican versus the illegal immigrant, and it's kind of a classic clash, you know, that corresponds to this immigration debate we're having in this country. And clearly, when you put a human face on the illegal immigrant, it's a different story. I mean, nobody wants to punish this young 22-year-old .” [ Video embedded below the page break ] read more

Since the TSA molested my family, why doesn’t Obama volunteer to subject his family to the same security procedures?

Two weeks ago, my wife flew alone out to Colorado with our two young children. Unaware that the TSA had instituted new and incredibly invasive new security procedures, my wife called me distressed after getting frisked by the TSA. Or as my wife put it, “in some cultures I would be married to my screener by now.” She was joking, but make no mistake — my wife was incredibly disturbed by how intimate a security pat down she received. So here’s my not-so-modest proposal: If the President’s Homeland Security department is so adamant that this is the absolute best way to prevent terrorism, I think the President and his family should voluntarily submit to one of the new invasive pat down procedures. I know the Obamas don’t fly commercial at all these days, so they should probably get a pretty good idea what the rest of us are putting up with. The President and his family — preferably with DHS Secretary Janet “The system worked” Napolitano — should show up at Dulles or Reagan airport on a weekday with a camera crew in tow, as airport pat downs are typically done in full view of hundreds of travelers. All of America will to see the TSA handling the President’s crown jewels. Then a rubber-gloved federal agent will run his hands all over his wife and daughter’s privates while he watches. Then I want him to turn to the camera and tell all of America that this is no big deal and we should all be good citizens and comply with the necessary security procedures. It only seems fair. CNN Omits ‘Watchdog’ Group Leader’s Anti-Christian Attacks

On Friday’s Situation Room, CNN highlighted the Military Religious Freedom Foundation’s concerns over a planned concert at Fort Bragg, North Carolina organized by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Foundation, but omitted the MRFF president Michael Weinstein’s past invective against Christianity. Anchor Wolf Blitzer referred to the MRFF as merely a ” watchdog group .” Blitzer introduced correspondent Chris Lawrence’s report by summarizing the controversy over the “Rock the Fort” concert and used his “watchdog” label for the MRFF: “A concert scheduled at Fort Bragg in North Carolina tomorrow may sound like a good way for soldiers to kick back, but a watchdog group is objecting to the message behind the music: an attempt to recruit the troops to ‘God’s army.’ ” Lawrence picked up where the anchor left off: “Well, on one hand, you’ve got thousands of soldiers and their families who want to praise God and to hear this Christian music at the concert tomorrow. On the other hand, you’ve got people saying, why is the U.S. Army helping an evangelical organization recruit new members?” After playing footage from past “Rock the Fort” events, the CNN correspondent stated that the “Billy Graham Evangelistic Association is bringing Christian rock bands and worship to Fort Bragg, and some say, crossing a line .” He then played his first sound bite from Weinstein, who outlined that apparently, “the expressed purpose of this event is to evangelize and spread the Gospel to all those who are lost. Soldiers are being given pieces of paper with seven blank names on it- to bring seven more people, so they will come to Christ.” Lawrence continued by noting that “Fort Bragg advertised the concert on its website, and Mikey Weinstein says more than a hundred soldiers there have complained to his group…sending e-mails like, ‘Please help us, MRFF. This is wrong.'” The correspondent later played a clip from an unidentified member of Billy Graham’s ministry, who expressed his prayer intentions for the concert: “We pray that not only they become soldiers here in boot camp, but we- that we pray that they’ll come into God’s army, in the sense of giving their life over Jesus Christ .” Lawrence added that ” critics say that’s a dangerous message for the military to bring right into basic training ,” and played his second clip from Weinstein, who stated that “we’re not supposed to be using the U.S. Army to develop and engender and- you know, new soldiers for Christ.” Lawrence did play two sound bites from Fort Bragg’s chaplain, who defended the concert. But the CNN correspondent, like his former colleague Campbell Brown back in May 2010 , didn’t bring up Weinstein’s past lawsuits against the military. Earlier in 2010, he demanded that “Bible codes” imprinted on rifle scopes used in Afghanistan be removed, and asked the Army to change the emblem of Evans Army Community Hospital in Colorado, whose motto invokes God in Latin, and bears a cross. The MRFF president is also on the record as using anti-Christian language. During a February 2008 interview , Weinstein referred to Mel Gibson’s “Passion of the Christ” as the ” Jesus Chainsaw Massacre ,” and blasted two military-oriented Christian organizations as ” variances of this Christian Taliban and the Christian al-Qaeda .” He even compared this apparent “Christian Taliban” inside the military to Nazis, or communists who aided Stalin. None of this background came up during the report. Besides the MRFF, CNN correspondent cited one other organization notoriously critical of the religious right near the end of the segment: ” Americans United for Separation of Church and State wrote the secretary of the Army, urging him to stop the military’s endorsement of the event . They argue proselytizing is prohibited, and the Army is breaking the law by endorsing religion.” The full transcript of Chris Lawrence’s report, which aired 51 minutes into the 5 pm Eastern hour of Friday’s Situation Room: WOLF BLITZER: A concert scheduled at Fort Bragg in North Carolina tomorrow may sound like a good way for soldiers to kick back, but a watchdog group is objecting to the message behind the music: an attempt to recruit the troops to ‘God’s army.’ Let’s go to our Pentagon correspondent Chris Lawrence- he’s working the story here. What is the controversy, Chris? CHRIS LAWRENCE: Yeah, Wolf. Well, on one hand, you’ve got thousands of soldiers and their families who want to praise God and to hear this Christian music at the concert tomorrow. On the other hand, you’ve got people saying, why is the U.S. Army helping an evangelical organization recruit new members? LAWRENCE (voice-over): The Christian concert is called ‘Rock the Fort,’ and it’s living up to the name. UNIDENTIFIED MALE 1: We’re going to have a little fun today. LAWRENCE: The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association is bringing Christian rock bands and worship to Fort Bragg, and some say, crossing a line. MIKEY WEINSTEIN, MILITARY RELIGIOUS FREEDOM FOUNDATION: The expressed purpose of this event is to evangelize and spread the Gospel to all those who are lost. Soldiers are being given pieces of paper with seven blank names on it- to bring seven more people, so they will come to Christ. LAWRENCE: Fort Bragg advertised the concert on its website, and Mikey Weinstein says more than a hundred soldiers there have complained to his group, Military Religious Freedom [Foundation], sending e-mails like, ‘Please help us, MRFF. This is wrong.’ UNIDENTIFIED MALE 2: In a few minutes, I’m going to give you a chance to make a decision. It’s your choice. LAWRENCE: ‘Rock the Fort’ has been to several other bases, including recruit training at Fort Jackson. UNIDENTIFIED MALE 2: And we pray that not only they become soldiers here in boot camp, but we- that we pray that they’ll come into God’s army, in the sense of giving their life over Jesus Christ. LAWRENCE: Critics say that’s a dangerous message for the military to bring right into basic training. WEINSTEIN: We’re not supposed to be using the U.S. Army to develop and engender and- you know, new soldiers for Christ. COL. DAVID HILLIS, U.S. ARMY CHAPLAIN [misidentified as “David Dreier”]: And our goal is- again, not to proselytize anyone- you know, from either their particular faith that they’re a part of- and our goal is not to coerce anyone. LAWRENCE: Fort Bragg’s chaplain says the event on his base is open to the public. No one has to come, except the thousands of soldiers and their families who are excited to do so. COL. HILLIS: It really is up to the individual, and people, like any message or any faith, can choose to accept or reject. LAWRENCE: The chaplain wrote to North Carolina churches on Fort Bragg letterhead promoting the event, and Billy Graham’s website states right up front, ‘The Rock the Fort outreach is designed to channel new believers into your church.’ Americans United for Separation of Church and State wrote the secretary of the Army, urging him to stop the military’s endorsement of the event. They argue proselytizing is prohibited, and the Army is breaking the law by endorsing religion. The chaplain says the base is merely a host for anyone who wants to come. UNIDENTIFIED MALE 3: God bless America! LAWRENCE (live): And Fort Bragg’s chaplain also told me that- you know, sharing the faith is part of a Christian tradition, and he’s not only obligated, but happy to support any other faith on base that would want to put on a similar event. Now, critics say, when it comes to religion, all the Army is supposed to do is officiate religious services and give soldiers some place to worship, and these concerts go way beyond that. Wolf? BLITZER: Chris Lawrence, thanks very much for that report.

World’s Largest Offshore Wind Farm Has Grand Opening Today

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/39324391/ns/us_news-environment/ Whopper of a wind farm opens off Britain World's largest offshore project has 100 turbines — so far Image: Wind turbines in Thames estuary Stefan Wermuth / Reuters Photo: A boat powering through the Thames estuary on Thursday provides perspective of just how big the wind turbines there are. msnbc.com staff and news service reports updated 9/23/2010 11:59:42 AM ET LONDON — The world's largest offshore wind farm had its grand opening Thursday — and its location on the estuary of the Thames River makes it a showcase for Britain's push to move beyond fossil fuels. So far, 100 wind turbines have been planted in waters up to 80 feet deep across the estuary in southern England. The idea is to produce enough electricity, 300 megawatts, to power the equivalent of 200,000 homes. Each turbine is nearly as tall as a 40-story building and the blades are at least 65 feet above the water for clearance with vessels. No turbine is closer than 1,600 feet to another and the entire “farm” covers an area of 22 square miles. Up to 341 turbines will be installed over the next four years. With Thursday's opening, which tops a 91-turbine farm off Denmark, Britain now has more offshore wind capacity than the rest of the world combined. “We are in a unique position to become a world leader in this industry,” British Energy and Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne said in a statement before he attended the grand opening. “We are an island nation and I firmly believe we should be harnessing our wind, wave and tidal resources to the maximum.” Britain now gets three percent of its electricity from renewables but aims to get 15 percent by 2020. As part of that, the government this year awarded licenses to wind farm developers in a program that could deliver up to 32 gigawatts of generation capacity and require investment of more than $117 billion. Critics of the $1.4 billion wind farm include some nearby residents who object to the sight of the giant towers, some visible from shore. The farm starts about seven miles from shore. Environmental groups tend to back wind power as long as projects are not in areas of significant bird flight paths. The new wind farm met that standard. It's an “important stride forward,” said Craig Bennett of the British chapter of Friends of the Earth. But the group also wants Britain to guarantee funding of at least $3 billion a year for the recently created and government-funded Green Investment Bank, which aims to boost private-sector spending on low-carbon technology. “I know that there is still more to do to bring forward the large sums of investment we want to see in low-carbon energy in the U.K.,” Huhne said, “and we as government are committed to playing our part.” One embarrassment to the government is that only 20 percent of the investment in the new wind farm has gone to British firms. The farm is owned and operated by Swedish energy company Vattenfall, and the largest chunk of expenditure has been to Denmark's Vestas for the wind turbines. Global interest The promised vast expansion of Britain's offshore wind resources is proving to be a powerful lure for companies not normally associated with renewables but keen to generate eco-friendly and reliable sources of revenue. Engineers, consultants and oil rig makers around the world are setting up new divisions and partnerships in order to get a foothold in the market, which offers secure returns to those building and running the turbines. “It's attractive for a lot of companies that are looking for contracts,” said Ian Simm, chief executive of green fund firm Impax Asset Management, which has holdings in companies such as Vestas. “The fundamental point that makes it attractive is scale and government commitment, and the fact that industrial companies can learn the facts of success in one offshore environment and be able to transfer the majority, if not all, of those skills to other countries,” he said. However, clearer statements from the government on renewables incentives are still needed to support wind farm developers and really kick-start the market, according to Sarwjit Sambhi, managing director of power generation at Centrica, which has won the rights to develop up to 4.2 gigawatts of offshore windpower in the Irish Sea. “There is a general theme across this in that we haven't passed the tipping point yet where the industry is confident enough that there is a long-term pipeline of projects.” Britain's potential The Offshore Valuation Group, made up of government and industry organizations, estimates if Britain were to develop just 29 percent of its potential offshore resource, this could deliver 169 gigawatts of capacity by 2050 and turn Britain into a net exporter of electricity. This would involve installing 7.2 gigawatts a year — roughly equivalent to 1,000 7.5 megawatt turbines — with fixed offshore wind accounting for 5.4 gigawatts of the average annual build rate needed. The supply chain needed for this would have annual revenues of nearly $100 billion in 2050 and employ around 145,000 people directly, according to the Offshore Valuation report. As a result shipbuilders and companies that specialize in making oil rigs are also entering the wind market. SeaEnergy Executive Chairman Steve Remp, who has worked in the offshore oil and gas market for 30 years, expects the market for equipment vessels to take off at the beginning of 2012. “I foresee a sizeable industry evolving that calls on the engineering expertise in working offshore in deep water,” he said. Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report. added by: EthicalVegan

US Invests $50 Million in Cleaner Cook Stoves

It’s one of the great under-recognized threats around the globe: cooking smoke. In developing nations the world over, women cook with crude wood-burning stoves, often in exceedingly poorly ventilated houses and rooms. The smoke poses not only a dangerous health risk — the toxic smoke coats the lungs of family members, especially endangering women, who typically spend more time indoors by the stove, and children. So this year, at the 2010 Clinton Global Initiative, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton announced the creation of the Global Alliance for Clean Cook Stoves, a US-lead effort to bring safer, and yes, cl… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Colin Powell: Illegal immigrants are what’s keeping this country’s lifeblood moving forward

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell says illegal immigrants do essential work in the U.S. and that he has firsthand knowledge of that — because they fix his house. A moderate Republican, Powell urged his party on Sunday to support immigration generally because those who come from abroad are, in his words, “what's keeping this country's lifeblood moving forward.” Powell said a path to legal status should be offered to illegal immigrants because they do work that needs to get done. At his own house, he said on NBC's “Meet the Press,” illegal immigrants are always around when he needs work done. He did not specify whether he hired them directly or they showed up with contractors. added by: Replicant
