‘The Walking Dead’ Zombies Take Over Atlanta, Then Your TV

‘I’d like to do 20 years of zombie TV,’ executive producer Frank Darabont says on the set of new AMC series. By Rick Marshall A Zombie on the set of “Walking Dead” Photo: MTV News ATLANTA — There is carnage on the streets of the ATL. At least there was, when MTV News went down South, to visit the set of “The Walking Dead.” There we found a horde of living dead prepared to bring Frank Darabont’s live-action adaptation of the hit comic books to life when the series premieres on AMC in October. We also found Darabont, “Walking Dead” comic creator Robert Kirkman , and many of the creative minds behind the show. “We have blocks of Atlanta shut down here, and there’s a tank behind me, if you can’t see it,” said Kirkman, who also serves as the series’ executive producer and a screenwriter for two of the first six green-lit episodes. “Just the scale of everything,” he marveled. “Everything is being done exactly the way I would’ve wanted it. And it’s better than I could have ever envisioned it. The whole thing is just amazing.” “The Walking Dead” follows a small group of human survivors in a world overrun by flesh-hungry zombies. Unlike zombie stories of the past, however, the comic book series and its small-screen adaptation focus on the effects a zombie apocalypse would have on the people who survive it. Instead of the zombie outbreak, it’s the zombie aftermath. And what an aftermath it is, as the project’s team brought the devastation of a zombie plague to the streets of downtown Atlanta — complete with overturned vehicles, scattered debris and yes, even a tank. “We’re going to follow the Robert Kirkman narrative pretty closely, but we’re giving ourselves permission to veer off path and find the interesting detours,” Darabont told MTV News. “We’ve got hundreds of zombies. We’ve got a downed helicopter; it just goes on and on. It’s crazy — all on a TV budget.” “The cool thing about it is, Frank Darabont, everything that he’s doing is him looking at the book and going, ‘I think there’s something here that would make it better,’ ” said Kirkman. “And I’ll be damned if he’s not right every time.” During our visit to the set, Darabont gave direction to series lead Andrew Lincoln, who plays police officer Rick Grimes, as hundreds of extras in full zombie makeup waited in the wings, ready to crawl, shamble and drag themselves into action. Given the 95-degree temperature on the day of our visit, the performance of the zombie horde was impressive. “There’s a certain look that we’re going for,” makeup effects supervisor Greg Nicotero told MTV News. “We want real gaunt, real thin features. … Tall, so that then we can make it look like they’re malnourished. So far, we’ve had some great performers, and they bring the makeup to life.” Darabont said he’d love to make the series a regular part of his career well beyond the first six episodes, much like Kirkman himself has done with the long-running comic book series. “I’d like to do 20 years of zombie TV,” he laughed. “Every day I’m at the monitors, and I’m going, ‘This is really, really cool.’ ” Much of the show’s team will also be attending this year’s Comic-Con International in San Diego and will host a “Walking Dead” panel on Friday at 11:30 a.m. in Room 6BCF. Too Short Arrested After Idaho Nightclub Fight

Rapper charged with three counts of misdemeanor battery after a tussle with security. By Jayson Rodriguez Too Short Photo: Boise Police Department Bay Area rapper Too Short was arrested and charged with three counts of misdemeanor battery Thursday morning (July 15) stemming from an incident in an Idaho nightclub. According to police records, the 44-year-old MC (real name: Todd Shaw) was released after posting bail and is scheduled to return to court August 4. Another man was also charged in the incident, which the Idaho Statesman is reporting as a fight with security workers who attempted to stop the rapper and his associate from inviting underage women to the backstage area. Short performed at the Boise Knitting Factory on Wednesday night as part of a lineup that also included E-40 and Mack 10. After his performance, the rapper and his associate, who was charged with two counts of battery, reportedly were involved in a tussle with club security, eyewitnesses told police after the gentlemen warned Too Short about his behavior. Police were called to the scene and took the two men into custody. If Too Short is found guilty of all charges, he could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. As of press time, Too Short nor a representative for the rapper could be reached for comment. Related Artists Too Short

‘The Hills’ Finale ‘Acknowledged’ It’s Hollywood Setting, Creator Says

‘It’s a nod to how much work goes into making it feel like a scripted show,’ Adam DiVello explains to MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena Brody Jenner in the finale of “The Hills” Photo: MTV After six seasons, marked by streams of mascara-stained tears and countless barbecues, “The Hills” finally bowed for good on Tuesday. But instead of playing it straight, the last few moments of the series cleverly addressed years of rumors about the reality show’s, well, realness, by panning out to reveal that Kristin’s goodbye with Brody had been filmed on a Hollywood backlot. And although some “Hills” fans have taken issue with the surreal ending, creator Adam DiVello said he was just going for a “wink.” “We had joked early on about different ways to do kind of a wink to whether it was real or not,” DiVello admitted to MTV News. “There were a lot of ideas thrown around, from even Lauren waking up and this whole thing was a dream, which would have been a little ‘Newhart,’ ” he revealed. “We had come up with a bunch of ideas, and then I had this idea to focus it on the Hollywood sign and really just kind of incorporate Hollywood into the ending of it. Our show’s one that’s based in Hollywood, and these kids live, work and play here and never, never really kind of acknowledged in the series that Hollywood is where shows are made.” Of course, that final shot had some fans wondering if it was confirmation from the show itself that what they’d been watching all these years was fiction. But DiVello argued that it confirms the opposite. “It’s a nod to how much work goes into making it feel like a scripted show,” he said. “When we set out to make the show, it was a reality show without the conventions of a reality show. When we showed up to Paramount that day we kind of walked Brody through it, and he was shocked,” DiVello recalled of shooting the finale. “I believe Kristin kind of started to cry a little bit. I think she was surprised when she showed up as well. We had a great time. [Viewers wondered,] ‘Were these things shot on soundstages or were they shot in their apartments?’ But I think everyone knows it was a reality show, obviously. So would he change anything about that ending? “I think it was great. I think we did tie up some stories with the cast and I think, ultimately, not only myself, but the people that work on my team and I think the network and I think America wants to see the kids happy,” he said. “And I think it showed that. You always want to leave the audience wondering what happens next. At the end of the day we were telling stories. I hope people leave it [as] a fun, six-season trip to California,” he said of the “Hills” legacy. “I hope they leave with fond memories of it. We make this show for the fans.” Do you feel any differently about “The Hills” finale having heard the show creator’s assessment. Share your thoughts in the comments. REVIEW: [REC] 2 Just Another Visit to the Horror-Franchise Ghetto

[REC] 2 relies almost entirely on its tunnel-vision, single-player style for its scares. It’s a strategy that stalls out halfway through, which means it works for twice as long as it should. Picking up where the 2007 sleeper hit [REC] left off, this Spanish horror trip sets up its premise while efficiently establishing its style: A SWAT team is suiting up and turning on its helmet cams (we’re given one soldier’s perspective, though other cameras are occasionally patched in) in order to escort a health inspector (Jonathan Mellor) into a quarantined building. No one is quite sure what the disease is or how it manifests itself, but it’s killing the people inside. [REC] 2 executes its one big twist almost immediately; the series of aftershock-like twists in its wake occur with descending intensity. The last one wouldn’t rattle a teacup.
