Ready for Every Weeknight Update? In a move that’s been rumored for week, Seth Meyers was officially named the next host of Late Night on NBC today. He will take over for Jimmy Fallon when that comedian slides into Jay Leo’s spot at 11:35 p.m. in 2014. Said Bob Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment, in announcing the news: “We think Seth is one of the brightest, most insightful comedy writers and performers of his generation. His years at SNL’s ‘Weekend Update’ desk, not to mention being head writer of the show for many seasons, helped him hone a topical brand of comedy that is perfect for the ‘Late Night’ franchise.” Added Meyers himself: “I only have to work for [producer Lorne Michaels] for five more years before I pay him back for the time I totaled his car. 12:30 on NBC has long been incredible real estate. For comics and cultural critics of virtually every color and persuasion, Tyler Perry is the textbook definition of an easy target: A mogul whose media empire rests atop a foundation of alleged minstrelsy, union-busting, cross-dressing, bad hit television and mass-produced screen melodrama. Add his recently disclosed $130 million annual earnings to the picture, and it’s like the target was moved within inches of its respective shooters — one of whom, perhaps obviously, was Saturday Night Live .
It’s apparent that there are certain Saturday Night Live hosts whom the show really has no idea how to use — Elton John is a good example from earlier this season. Then there’s the strange case of Ed Helms: For whatever reason, the show decided to pretty much ignore the fact that Helms was host altogether.
At an auction of movie props and memorabilia, the pencil and charcoal portrait of Kate Winslet’s Titanic character wearing nothing but the Heart of the Ocean diamond necklace is now up for grabs. Expected to fetch up to £10,000, the sketch was actually drawn by James Cameron; he signed it using Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack Dawson character’s initials and dated it April 14, 1912 – the day before the Titanic sank. What an odd night. Then again, when Elton John was announced as Saturday Night Live ‘s musical guest and host, perhaps an “odd night” should have been expected. But not quite like this.
This week was the most difficult Saturday Night Live relevancy poll of the season to tabulate. No one cast member dominated the airtime, and with few exceptions, the cast was spread pretty thin throughout the evening. Put it this way: At one point I was thinking, Wow, Abby Elliott is getting a lot of play this week; it sure will be nice to see her finally near the top of the poll. But that faded as it became clear that pretty much everyone got a significant amount of play this week.
