According to CNN , there’s a sense of disapproval in the Latino community that’s similar to what African Americans felt when Tiana (Princess and the Frog) debuted: Disney’s first Latina princess, featured in the movie “Sofia the First: Once Upon A Princess” has received backlash as well as support from the media outlets, especially the Latino community. Is Disney’s new princess a milestone for Latinos or a culturally irrelevant character? Disney’s spokeswoman provided a recent statement to CNN to help clarify what exactly makes “Princess Sofia” Latina: “The range of characters in ‘Sofia the First’ — and the actors who play them — are a reflection of Disney’s commitment to diverse, multicultural and inclusive storytelling, and the wonderful early reaction to ‘Sofia’ affirms that commitment. In the story, Sofia’s mother, Queen Miranda, was born in a fictitious land, Galdiz, a place with Latin influences. Miranda met Sofia’s father, Birk Balthazar, who hailed from the kingdom of Freezenberg, and together they moved to Enchancia, where Sofia was born.” “Sofia the First” is a television movie and series set to debut November 18 on the Disney Channel and Disney Junior, aimed at children ages 2-7. Sofia is a regular little girl whose life changes when her mother marries the king. Ariel Winter from “Modern Family” will voice Sofia and Sara Ramirez from “Grey’s Anatomy” will voice Queen Miranda. When news first hit in December 2011 that Disney was going to introduce their new and much younger princess, there was no mention of Sofia’s Latina background, let alone that her mother was from “a place with Latin influences” until this week. Yet this week, Disney announced that Sofia was indeed Latina. During a press tour, a blogger asked why Sofia’s mother, Miranda, had a darker complexion than her mother, leading to the big announcement of the Hispanic background: “She is Latina,” said Jamie Mitchell, Disney’s executive producer, during a press tour to Entertainment Weekly in an article published on Tuesday. According the the vice president of Disney Junior original programming, “We never actually call it out.” “It’s sort of a matter-of-fact situation rather than an overt thing.” However, this isn’t the first time there is controversy surrounding one of Disney’s princesses. In 2009, “The Princess and the Frog” received criticism from parents and the media for being set in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, it’s voodoo references and Disney’s first African-American princess, Tiana, falling in love with a Caucasian prince. Most agree Princess Tiana was a step in the right direction but many said there was still work to be done. Some Latinos applauded Disney’s new milestone and welcomed her with open arms on Twitter stating, “#Disney comes out with its first “#Latina Princess.” Its about time. It is 2012. #Hispanics” and “#Disney finally comes out with a #Latina princess” Some criticized what they saw as a lack of cultural signifiers or ethnic identity in the Sofia character. “If Disney were truly to finally step out and directly cater to the Latino community that has been crying out for decades for a Latina princess to represent our girls,” said Ana Flores, blogger for Spanglishbaby, “She would be as Latina as Tiana is black or as Pocahontas is Indian-American.” What do you think about Disney’s portrayal of ethnic characters? During a telephone town hall with small-business owners, first reported by In These Times, Romney said President Barack Obama’s policies have hurt employers, criticizing the president on trade, labor, and his signature health care law. “It’s an anti-business, anti-job agenda,” Romney said. At the end of the call, Romney urged business owners to relay their thoughts on the election to their employees. “I hope you make it very clear to your employees what you believe is in the best interest of your enterprise and therefore their job and their future in the upcoming elections,” Romney said. “And whether you agree with me or you agree with President Obama, or whatever your political view, I hope, I hope you pass those along to your employees.” He continued: “Nothing illegal about you talking to your employees about what you believe is best for the business, because I think that will figure into their election decision, their voting decision, and of course doing that with your family and your kids as well. I particularly think our young kids … they need to understand that American runs on a strong and vibrant business and we need businesses growing and thriving this country.” Romney is correct that such behavior is not illegal. After the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling, which greatly expanded corporations and unions’ political speech, employers can legally compel workers to participate in political campaigns. However, the practice is often controversial…Arthur Allen, CEO of ASG Software Solutions, made a similar plea in a pro-Romney email leaked last week. “If we fail as a nation to make the right choice on November 6th, and we lose our independence as a company, I don’t want to hear any complaints regarding the fallout that will most likely come,” Allen wrote. The flyer was found circulating in one of the dorms at Miami University in Ohio. The school tried to keep the story under wraps and didn’t alert the student body . The school said it didn’t say isht because the incident was “confined strictly to McBride Hall.” SMH According to The Daily News… Miami University in Ohio is under fire after a disturbing flier offering tips on how to rape women was found in the men’s bathroom of a coed freshman dorm. The list, “Top Ten Ways to Get Away with Rape,” tells readers that “practice makes perfect,” adding, “the more you rape, the better you get at it.” “If you’re afraid that the girl will identify you, slit her throat,” the flier also advises. A resident assistant at the dorm, McBride Hall, found the note on the weekend of Oct. 6 and reported it to university officials the following Monday, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported. “I read the flier. I was shocked,” Barbara Jones, Miami’s vice president for student affairs, told the newspaper. “It has no place on our campus or any other campus.” In response, the university organized a mandatory meeting for male students in the dorm, launched a police investigation and ramped up police presence in the hall. But Kate Van Fossen, a junior at the university and vice president of Woman Against Violence and Sexual Assault, says the university should have done more, such as alerting the entire student body immediately after the incident. The university issued a response to students this week, Van Fossen said, adding that while she “appreciated” the notice, it was too little too late. “I don’t want to point fingers at the university,” she told the Daily News. “But it is so important for awareness to be pointed towards this incident because sexual assault does tend to be an issue that people brush under the rug.” Jones told the Cincinnati Enquirer that the university did not notify all students right away because the incident was “confined strictly to McBride Hall.” Van Fossen, however, questioned how serious the university is about sexual assault prevention given that the school has not had a sexual assault prevention coordinator in a year. “I was absolutely shocked,” she told the Daily News of the flier. “It brought tears to my eyes that someone on my campus, joking or not joking, came up with those things to say and posted them in a public place for other boys to see. You never know who [the poster] is reaching out to.” At least 27 sexual assaults have been reported on campus since 2009, with 19 of the assaults allegedly occurring in dorms, according to the Miami University Police website. Claire Wagner, the university’s director of news and public information, told the Daily News that officials have not yet identified the people responsible for the “awful” flier. The culprit, however, will face several possible sanctions, including removal from the dorm, mandatory educational programs and suspension. Looks like Paul thinks he can keep fakin’ us all out! During his campaign run in Ohio , the good ‘ole boy thought it’d be a cool idea to stop into a soup kitchen unannounced and ‘help out’. According to The Washington Post : The head of a northeast Ohio charity says that the Romney campaign last week “ramrodded their way” into the group’s Youngstown soup kitchen so that GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan could get his picture taken washing dishes in the dining hall. Brian J. Antal, president of the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society, said that he was not contacted by the Romney campaign ahead of the Saturday morning visit by Ryan, who stopped by the soup kitchen after a town hall at Youngstown State University. “We’re a faith-based organization; we are apolitical because the majority of our funding is from private donations,” Antal said in a phone interview Monday afternoon. “It’s strictly in our bylaws not to do it. They showed up there, and they did not have permission. They got one of the volunteers to open up the doors.” He added: “The photo-op they did wasn’t even accurate. He did nothing. He just came in here to get his picture taken at the dining hall.” Ryan had stopped by the soup kitchen for about 15 minutes on his way to the airport after his Saturday morning town hall in Youngstown. By the time he arrived, the food had already been served, the patrons had left, and the hall had been cleaned. Upon entering the soup kitchen, Ryan, his wife and three young children greeted and thanked several volunteers, then donned white aprons and offered to clean some dishes. Photographers snapped photos and TV cameras shot footage of Ryan and his family washing pots and pans that did not appear to be dirty. Antal, a self-described independent voter, said that he “can’t fault my volunteers” for letting the campaign in but said that the campaign “didn’t go through the proper channels.” He noted that the soup kitchen relies on funding from private individuals who might reconsider their support if it appears that the charity is favoring one political candidate over another. “I can’t afford to lose funding from these private individuals,” he said. “If this was the Democrats, I’d have the same exact problem.” He added that the incident had caused him “all kinds of grief” and that regardless of whether Ryan had intended to serve food to patrons or wash dishes, he would not have allowed the visit to take place. “Had they asked for permission, it wouldn’t have been granted. … But I certainly wouldn’t have let him wash clean pans, and then take a picture,” Antal said. La Toya has fired off a cease-and-desist letter to Vanity Fair, claiming its recent article entitled “Estate of Siege” is “replete with misstatements of fact, false innuendos, and defamatory insinuations.” According to La Toya’s letter, the article falsely claims she showed up at MJ’s Carolwood mansion shortly after his death and loaded plastic bags filled with cash into a duffel bag. The VF article goes on to describe La Toya’s bf leaving the home in a moving van. La Toya claims the article describes her visit as a “mad scramble for money” — strongly insinuating she stole large sums of cash from MJ’s house. According to La Toya … the allegations are nothing but lies and she wants a full retraction asap. TSA Agent Arrested For Stealing $100 From Passenger At LAX This muhfugga right here! According to LA Times: A federal Transportation Security Administration officer was arrested Friday morning on suspicion of stealing $100 from an airline passenger who was going through a security checkpoint at Los Angeles International Airport, authorities said. Los Angeles airport police said Clyde Reese, 47, of Gardena was booked on a misdemeanor theft charge after the passenger complained to authorities that his money was taken from a plastic bin where he had placed his wallet and other personal possessions for screening. TSA spokesman Nico Melendez said the agency will remove Reese from his screening duties and help with the law enforcement investigation. He added that if wrongdoing is found, Reese could be fired. “TSA holds its employees to the highest ethical standards and has a zero tolerance for theft,” Melendez said.
