Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress ‘Didn’t Smell At All,’ Insider Says

‘Is she really wearing a meat outfit?’ Gaga’s backstage VMA escort recalls thinking. By Mawuse Ziegbe Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Lady Gaga’s meat dress is one of the biggest fashion statements in VMA history, but despite the outsize media, fan and PETA attention , the ensemble was actually one of the superstar’s more wearable looks of the evening. “It didn’t smell at all,” Ernesto Elias of MTV Music and Talent, who escorted Gaga to and from her seat throughout Sunday’s show, told MTV News on Thursday (September 16). Although Gaga was rocking pounds of raw meat under the glare of the Nokia Theatre lights, Elias said the fleshy frock wasn’t gag-inducing. “I actually was able to get a picture taken with her and kinda touched it. It was just your regular old feeling of meat.” The crafty couture may have had the usual touches of a choice cut of beef, but the visual punch the look packed was anything but typical. Well, maybe it was typical for Gaga. “Pretty much every time that dressing-room door would open up, it was always a surprise, because I never knew what to expect,” Elias said. “That last time was a real shock, just because I was confused if it was really meat or what. At first, it kind of looks fake, but at a closer glance, I could tell it was real.” Gaga’s final sashay backstage caught other VMA insiders off guard as well. “When I’m walking her from her dressing room to her seat, I’m always five or 10 steps ahead, just kind of clearing a path. And … people would just take a double take,” Elias said, describing the behind-the-scenes impact of Gaga’s outfit. “Just ’cause they weren’t quite sure what they were really looking at. Then she would walk by them, and they’d get a better glimpse, and [it] probably left them confused — as most people were.” Gaga kept the ensemble carcass-coordinated as well, encasing some sky-high heels in slivers of meat. “They were real shoes and they just used the meat and wrapped it around the shoes. They used the butcher’s twine to hold the meat in place,” Elias said. “The shoes … without the meat on them [were] just huge, like, heel platforms, I guess.” The meat mini capped off another night of decadent fashion, which included a black ball gown that “was very heavy. She needed to walk very slow to get to one place or another just because of the weight of the outfit,” Elias said. Gaga also hit the white carpet in a flowing Alexander McQueen creation as she simultaneously pulled off both a fashion and political statement with several openly gay military vets on her arm . Unlike her breakout runway-show-within-an-awards-show moment at the 2009 VMAs , Gaga had more time to put on each elaborate outfit. However, the pacing and styling of every look was very likely still planned with the same detail-oriented precision as her debut VMA outing. “She’s very professional in how she’s coming across with all this sort of stuff,” Elias said. And as millions of viewers and VMA attendees witnessed at this year’s festivities, Gaga kept it consistent with some seriously “over-the-top” fashion . Even Elias, who led Gaga through the gaggle of backstage mayhem that is the VMAs, had to reflect upon the impact of the protein-packed garb. “I was probably just thinking: Is she really wearing a meat outfit?” What did you think of Lady Gaga’s VMA fashion? ‘Catfish’ Filmmakers Respond To ‘Is It Real?’ Debate

‘We’re not that creative,’ Ariel Schulman laughs to MTV News. By Kara Warner Nev Schulman and Ariel Schulman in “Catfish” Photo: Rogue After making a splash at Sundance at the beginning of this year — both for being a hit with audiences and for stirring up a little controversy regarding the is-it-real-or-fake discussion that divided critics — “Catfish” is on its way to theaters September 17. The heavily hyped indie documentary revolves around NYC-based photographer Yev Schulman and the series of curious events that occur when he begins an online friendship with an 8-year-old girl and a romantic relationship with her older sister. When MTV News caught up with the film’s two first-time directors, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, they discussed what prompted them to begin filming to begin with, their subsequent decisions to keep the cameras rolling no matter what and their reactions to the “it’s a fake” controversy. MTV : Without revealing the big twist, what is this film about? Henry Joost : It’s a true story about an experience we had. The main character is Ariel’s younger brother who works with us, who got into a Facebook relationship that took a turn for the unexpected, and we were there to capture it. Ariel Schulman : People are surprised we started filming as early as we did, but truth is, we’ve been filming each other for years, and we’re always prepared. … I’ve got this brother who is just very charismatic and gets into a lot of trouble and gets himself into situations, and if I’m not filming him, I usually regret it. Joost : We’ve been doing it since high school. We’re those annoying guys: “Come on, you don’t have to film this. It’s not interesting.” Schulman : So [Yev] gets involved with this 8-year-old girl who’s a painter. She’s obsessed with his photos, he’s a ballet photographer in New York, he’s a dance junkie. He’s a straight dance junkie, which is a good situation to be in. … I was already filming him, because I’m always filming him. … I thought, “This looks like a friendship and sort of business relationship,” because she starts painting and selling the paintings based on his photos, and they split the proceeds. … It develops, and he meets her older sister, and they start to fall in love, and we’re like, “Oh, that sounds like a longer short film about Internet romance, and it will end when they meet,” and that’s just the first act of the movie, and it takes a pretty severe 90-degree turn from there. Joost : We had no idea where it was headed. It was this soap opera unfolding in our office. … It was engrossing. Ariel started filming it, and he’s been wanting to make a movie about his brother, because separate from the movie, his brother is incredible, a real-life character and always attracting drama and people. He’s a really charismatic person, and he has no filter, and he just wades into things. MTV : You mentioned that things take a serious turn. Were there moments when Yev wanted you guys to stop rolling? Joost : He had to be talked into it [at times]. Schulman : It was his life in front of the lens, and it gets pretty hairy. We have a couple arguments, and that’s in the movie. There were times when I didn’t want to go through with it, [Yev] didn’t want to go through with it, [Joost] didn’t want to go through with it. … The tables turned, and … Joost : Ultimately, it became Yev’s journey to find out the truth. He ended up convincing us to keep going at different points; each of us sort of chicken out at different points. MTV : What do you think of the controversy, people claiming it’s all fake? Joost : It is a documentary in that it’s something that actually happened and we filmed it and none of it is staged or fake. To us, we had no idea people were going to have that reaction until Sundance, and after the first screening, [“Super Size Me” director/star] Morgan Spurlock went up to somebody on our team and went, “That is the best fake documentary I’ve ever seen,” and we were like, “Really?” Because how do you react to that in our shoes? … It’s kind of strange, because to us, there’s no debate; that’s what happened. I think what people are reacting to a lot is, the film is edited. We can’t put out a 250-hour movie, so we’re making decisions and streamlining the narrative and presenting what we feel is the clearest representation of what happened, but it’s real, and there’s nothing disingenuous about it. Schulman : It gives us too much credit, though. If this were fake, then it would be … Joost : Yeah, we would be so much smarter than we actually are. Schulman : Yeah, we’re not that creative. Joost : It would be amazing if we had faked it. I don’t know how we would have done it, but … Schulman : And my brother would be the best actor since Marlon Brando. Cee-Lo Reflects On Complex Career: ‘I’m A Book, Not A Magazine’

‘It is a continuation of the same revolution I have always talked about,’ he tells MTV News of his many genres. By Shaheem Reid Cee-Lo Photo: Gustavo Caballero/ Getty Images The magical voice of Cee-Lo translates whether he’s singing songs that make immediate impact on pop radio like his latest single, “F— You,” or records that capture the hearts of the hip-hop community like his feature on Rick Ross’ “Tears of Joy.” For the Atlanta legend, he said singing is a perfect way to release his pain and that he will continue to show his versatility. “It’s simple, man. Me and Ross got history. We holla,” Lo said about the latter record. “On the few occasions that we’ve met, it’s always love and admiration. To do the record, of course it would have to been the right record. Who would have known ‘Tears of Joy’ would have been so immediate and apparently urgent of a song? It reverberated immediately. I’m never too quick to say, ‘This is a hit record.’ I don’t even know how to talk like that. Each artistic endeavor of mine has always been an act of faith. I don’t really know. I’m only doing what my heart and gut tells me to do. But I already know what comes out my mouth is different. Then again, there’s something so signature about the ‘Tears of Joy’ joint. It reminds you — especially my fellow Southerners — it reminds you of a Goodie Mob record.” When Lo ran into Ross earlier this year in L.A., the Miami kingpin told him about the song he wanted to collaborate on. Ross sent the song off, and in two weeks, it was completed. “He had verses on it already,” Cee-Lo said. “But [the words] ‘Tears of Joy’ is all I needed. Ross did Ross, which is great. [The song] represents the contrast/contradiction which is life.” Cee-Lo said “Tears of Joy” almost represents a “homecoming” for him in the eyes of some fans to his soulful roots, first introduced with Outkast and his group Goodie Mob. Cee-Lo also argued that he’s actually never left those musical beginnings; he’s just simply ventured out and experimented on such projects as Gnarls Barkley’s two LPs to show his peers and the fans how far hip-hop could go and to express his different sides. “It is a continuation of the same revolution I have always talked about,” he insisted. “It’s the fact that people don’t know me completely. I’m just now telling you more about myself. I’m a book, not a magazine.” Lo’s next album, Lady Killer, comes out later this year, and he’s also working on the next album from the Mob. “The solo album is something completely different,” he revealed. “I got that mixtape out there, Stray Bullets, which is a prequel to the album Lady Killer. That’s got nothing to do with what I do with Goodie, besides quality. But Goodie, man, that’s what ‘Tears of Joy’ represents. I hope people can see the bigger picture. None of that is lost in me. I ain’t got so rich and famous that I separated from the soul. That’s me, that’s what I’m about. It’s on the tip of my tongue at all times. It’s people wanting that and needing that, that’s all the incentive I need. That’s what makes my life worth living, especially when I remember there was time I ain’t have nothing constructive to say. So any time I can do it, I feel like I’m further ensuring good favor in my rights of passage, being pleasing in the sight of my maker. It truly means that much to me. My pain runs deep. All of that is behind what I got to sing.” For anyone wondering when Cee-Lo will make a full-throttle return to rapping, he said it will be on the Goodie Mob reunion LP, which doesn’t have a release date yet. “When people be asking why I don’t rap no more, it’s not that. … It’s gotta come,” he explained. “I’mma isolate that to the Goodie Mob. That’s all I care to rap about. Rappin’ is like a contact sport. It’s an attitude. So the only thing I get angry about is the calls [about me not rapping]. That makes me wanna fight. As far as somebody stepping on my shoes, because we standing too close to each other, I don’t have that problem. Nobody does what I do. I don’t have no conflict. So I can do what eases my mind. I do believe that music is not meant to agitate; it’s meant to soothe the savage beast. I’m one of them beasts. It soothes me. I’m impressed, because I can separate myself from it and give credit to a higher power. It ain’t really me. To be able to sing is a blessing to me. But really, you hurt so bad, sometimes I can’t even rap about it. I gotta sing. That’s why it always hurts a little bit no matter what I’m singing. There’s pain in it. As far as Goodie goes, I got that. That’s all I’m trying to tell y’all.” Lady Killer has a tentative release date in December. Do you prefer Cee-Lo the rapper or Cee-Lo the singer? Ocean’s Color Can Change Hurricane Patterns

Chlorophyll concentrations worldwide; Image via SeaWiFS satellite of NASA Recent research shows that the color of the ocean can have a big influence on the occurence of hurricanes — the greener the ocean, the more hurricanes. And that’s a good thing. The ocean’s tint comes from the presence of chlorophyll, the green pigment in phytoplankton that helps the organisms convert sunlight into food, and thus forms the foundation of the oceanic food chain, as well as a prime environment for hurricanes. However, as we recently pointed out in another study, warming temperatures of the oceans are having a negative impact on
