Quote Of The Day: Plaxico Burress Says Mike Vick “Gave Me Hope, Joy”

Plaxico Burress is fresh out of jail and ready to get back to work. In an interview with NFL Network’s NFL Total Access, the disgraced wide receiver talked about getting his life back on track and his surprise at his tough sentence. Check out some quotes below: On Being Hit With The Book: “Yes, I was (shocked at sentence). To be honest, I thought — at the most — I would probably do maybe four to six months based on a reckless endangerment charge or whatever it may be. But they just kinda pulled out all the whips and, you know, stacked everything on me. It was tough to fathom. It was like, ‘Why is this happening?’ At that time, it was just so many different emotions going through your mind, and it was unbelievable.” “I woke up that morning and had a nice breakfast in the hotel. And I went to court, and I was in jail like two hours later. And, like, everything that you had was just taken away from you just that quick. It was unexplainable.” Welcome to being Black in America Plaxico. You should’ve been prepared for the worst. Plax says visits and support from his wife, former NFL coach Tony Dungy, and former Giants teammates Brandon Jacobs, David Tyree, Osi Umenyiora, Gibril Wilson, Michael Strahan and Amani Toomer helped him through the “the lowest point in my life.” He’s already working to clean up his image by joining forces with the National Urban League and the Brady campaign educating people about the dangers of firearms. “If I can just stop one child from not taking a firearm out of the house or never put his hand on a gun, you know, I’ve served my purpose,” he said. Hmmm so we guess this means he won’t be walking around strapped any more. Too bad he had to literally shoot himself (and his career) in the leg to figure that out. Surprisingly enough, despite Plax’s two season hiatus, he also says he never thought his career was in jeopardy… We guess we can see why. The NFL deals with all kinds of problem children — as long as you don’t hurt dogs nobody is gonna get all crazy right? Speaking of which, Plax says he’s drawn a lot of inspiration from Michael Vick: “When I was going through everything legally, I did get a chance to talk to him a few times,” said Burress. “He was just telling me to stay strong, and everything will work itself out. And to just see him go out on a football field and do so many things that he’s been able to do to take his game to the next level as a quarterback, and pretty much going through a situation similar to mine with being away from the football game for two years — it gave me hope, joy. … I’ve been a big fan of him ever since high school.” Aw doesn’t that just warm your heart? For his family’s sake, Plax better hope he can have a Vick type comeback. Keep reading for Plax’s top picks for where he’d like to get his second chance as an NFL player…

A “Lil Positivity”: ‘Tasia Makes Surprise Appearance At Atlanta Charter School Graduation [Video]

Only in America is it possible for dropouts to keep the kids motivated about their education. Fantasia and her still-unconfirmed growing gut full o’somebody made a special appearance yesterday to congratulate a special graduating class at the high-profile Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta. Last night, at the Ferst Center at Georgia Tech, the academy graduated the first 20 students who spent the full four years there. It was a touching three hours, full of inspirational speeches and videos, plus appearances by Bow Wow, Nelly and actor Brandon Jones, who was in the original movie “The Ron Clark Story.” Near the end, Fantasia popped up to sing “I Believe,” her coronation song on “Idol” in 2004. I can’t say she performed it with the passion of 2004 but she did tell them that she regretted dropping out of school. She spent her early post-”Idol” years struggling with finances, partially because of her lack of education, she said. Hey: whatever helps these kids value education, right? Check out the video below:

Jesus Take The Wheel: 2 Killed, 15 Wounded Overnight In Three New York City Borroughs

New York’s gotta chill, man! Bullets flew across New York City late Saturday and early Sunday, as vicious gunfire left two men dead and 15 people injured in Brooklyn, Queens and Harlem. Seven separate shootings bloodied Brooklyn alone, including fatal fights in Brownsville and East New York, where a 22-year-old Queens father died. Anthony McRae, 22, was gunned down about 4:45 a.m. Sunday in front of the Hamzah Deli and Grocery on Rockaway Ave., police said. He was shot at least four times and cops are reviewing deli surveillance tapes, but do not have any suspects in custody yet. Around midnight, three young teens were also shot in Marine Park, Brooklyn during a spat over a 16-year-old’s bike. Three people were injured, one critically. Less than half an hour later, a shooting at a Prospect-Lefferts Gardens house party left five people wounded. Two men who were denied entrance to the gathering, unloaded about 12:15 a.m. into the crowd of revelers gathered outside 349 Fenimore Street, an eye witness said. In Brownsville, a 45-year-old man was shot multiple times and died near his home late Saturday night. Jerry Armstrong, 45, was found with several gun shot wounds on 95th Street about 11 p.m. Saturday. Two additional shootings left two men wounded in Brooklyn, as did a pair of shootings in Queens. One person was also wounded in Harlem. SMDH. Time for another Hip-Hop campaign against violence. Source

3-Teens Charged In Cragslist Set Up Killing: Suspect’s Mom “My Baby Isn’t Violent!!” [Video]

An 18-year-old college student died from a bullet to his chest as he chased three teens who robbed him and his girlfriend when he was buying a computer advertised on Craigslist for $600, a prosecutor said Friday. Details of the killing emerged at an arraignment for three 17-year-old males who were charged as adults with murder, robbery and shooting at an occupied vehicle. Superior Court Judge Joseph Brannigan entered not guilty pleas on their behalf and set bail at $5 million each — $3 million higher than the amount sought by prosecutors. Prosecutors have said Garrett Berki died late Wednesday after he and his girlfriend met suspects Rashon Abernathy, Seandell Jones and Shaquille Jordan in San Diego to buy an Apple MacBook Pro. One teen pulled a gun and robbed the couple of cash and their cell phones, authorities said. A car chase followed, with Berki pursuing the assailants on a freeway and city streets before he was shot as he tried to box them in on a dead-end street, prosecutor Kristian Trocha told reporters. Abernathy is suspected of firing a single shot from the back seat, shattering Berki’s windshield, Trocha said. Police said Berki, a San Diego community college student, was trying to read his assailants’ license plate during the pursuit. Officers found him slumped over the steering wheel, and he died less than an hour later at a hospital. All three suspects were arrested within minutes of the shooting, hiding in back yards after crashing their car in a cul-de-sac about two blocks from the shooting scene, authorities said. Patricia Dykes, Jordan’s mother, told reporters her son was “hurting” because someone got killed. She said he was a straight-A student preparing to graduate from high school. She emphasized that he was not accused of pulling the trigger. “He told me he’s going to write a letter to the (victim’s) family that he’s sorry for whatever happened, but that he didn’t … do anything violent to anyone,” Dykes said. Shearese Johnson, the mother of Jones, said her son didn’t kill anyone and called the charges unfair. Jones is suspected of being the getaway driver after the robbery. “All I’m going to say is I love my son, and I’m here, and this just isn’t fair,” Johnson said. If convicted, the three teens could face maximum sentences of life in prison, prosecutors said. Trocha told reporters all three were equally responsible for the death, even though Abernathy is the only one accused of firing a gun. “All of them participated in the robbery. The murder was part of this robbery in trying to escape,” Trocha said. “It’s as if they pulled the trigger themselves.” Trocha said all three defendants were gang members — a claim met with skepticism by the two mothers. Kevin Milmoe, a public defender, said Abernathy and Jordan had no criminal record. The judge said he would appoint a public defender for each of the three teens. Source 1 Source 2

Jesus Take The Wheel: Three Injured After Kindergarten Kid Brings Loaded Gun To School

How the hell does a six-year-old get his hands on a loaded gun? Three elementary school students were injured when a loaded gun that a classmate brought to school went off during lunch. Houston ISD officials say a six-year-old boy brought a loaded handgun to Ross Elementary School on Bay at Jensen in northeast Houston. The kindergarten student had the gun in the cafeteria when it fell to the ground and accidentally discharged during the lunch period around 10:20am. Three kindergarten students were either grazed by the bullet, or injured by shrapnel. They were taken to area hospitals. A six-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl were each wounded in the foot. Another six-year-old boy was wounded in the leg. None of the wounds are considered life threatening. Their parents have been notified. Concerned parents have been flocking to the school to check on their children. HISD police are investigating how the child, a six-year-old boy, obtained the gun. Where were this kids parents when he got hold of that gun? Thank God no one was killed. Source
