[ In this exclusive excerpt from the new book Reality Matters: 19 Writers Come Clean About the Shows We Can’t Stop Watching (HarperCollins, Apr. 13), Movieline editor at large Mark Lisanti measures himself against Jersey Shore ‘s three-word Guido gold standard — with less-than-optimal results. — STV ] About five minutes into Jersey Shore ‘s (two-hour!) premiere, Italian-American groups began to express their displeasure about the cast’s embrace — nay exultation — of the term “Guido,” considered by many to be a slur, as well as MTV’ s alleged exploitation of the group by reducing all Italians to an easily mockable Goombah stereotype. It’s a complaint Italians have heard before, most recently after some people wrongheadedly decried The Sopranos , perhaps the greatest and most nuanced television show of all time, for depicting the culture as nothing but a bunch of tracksuited, pork-store-haunting, stoolie-whacking goons. As an Italian American who grew up in a New York suburb just north of the Bronx, among friends (if not family) who were recognizable, if distant, forebears of The Shore gang (in those days, it was B.U.M. Equipment instead of Ed Hardy), Pauly D’s celebratory explanation of Guidoness as “a lifestyle… being Italian… tanning, gel, everything,” was not just the last word on a minor controversy. it was an invitation to take an inventory of my inner Guido every Thursday night.

‘Everywhere I go, there’s just mass amounts of people,’ the Situation tells Interview magazine. By Eric Ditzian Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino on the set of his Interview magazine photo shoot Photo: Interview Magazine John Lennon famously declared in 1966 that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. Almost half a century later, a star of MTV’s “Jersey Shore” has a feeling he and his reality-show buddies are giving the Fab Four a run for their money. “Oh, man, it’s just unbelievable,” Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino told Interview magazine in the new issue. “Everywhere I go, there’s just mass amounts of people. There’s people showing up at airports, wanting autographs, girls, it’s insane. It’s like the Beatles, man.” The world’s in love with the “Shore” kids, so it seems, and they feel fine. Girls apparently have fainted when they met the Situation. Girls who encounter Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, the star declared, often start shaking and crying. And then there’s Vinny Guadagnino. “I have girls who come to my house and knock on my door,” he said. “I have girls who call me at 4 in the morning. I have girls who make pages for me on Facebook, VinnyGsFutureWife on Twitter.” Along with the girls, they have celeb fans too, including, according to the “Shore” guys, Lindsay Lohan, Ashton Kutcher, Diddy, Denzel Washington and Leonardo DiCaprio. According to Vinny, Leo once told him, “I can tell you’re a good Italian kid, from a good family.” While they’ve gathered in Miami this week to begin shooting the second season of “Jersey Shore” — which premieres Thursday, July 29, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV — the crew is also looking toward the future and where their newfound fame might take them. The Situation is looking to break into movies after he “conquer[s] reality.” Ronnie wants to get out of reality shows before he morphs into a gelled-up version of Screech from “Saved by the Bell.” He’s looking toward a career in modeling or acting. Vinny? The kid loves to rap and wants to lay down a track that is “clubby and catchy,” although if a music career doesn’t work out, he’ll fall back on his political-science career. Paul “DJ Pauly D” DelVecchio, too, is looking at sticking in the music biz. “I want to become a famous DJ,” he said. “DJ AM passed away, so I want to become that — a huge DJ.” Are you excited for season two of “Jersey Shore”? What do you think the crew will get into down in Miami? Let us know in the comments below! Season two of “Jersey Shore” premieres Thursday, July 29, at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Be there! Former Death Row honcho’s suit for 2005 Miami club shooting goes to court December 6. By Gil Kaufman Kanye West Photo: Eric Ryan/Getty Images Kanye West has kept a pretty low profile since infamously bum-rushing Taylor Swift at the VMAs , but the notoriously private rapper may have to come out of seclusion at year’s end, thanks to one-time rap impresario Marion “Suge” Knight . According to The Associated Press, , on Tuesday U.S. District Court Judge Patricia Seitz scheduled a December 6 trial date in Miami for a lawsuit by the one-time Death Row Records honcho against West. Knight claims the Grammy-winning rapper was partially responsible for a 2005 nightclub shooting at a party he hosted that resulted in Knight getting shot in the leg. Knight filed the suit against West in 2008, blaming ‘Ye for the loss of a beloved 15-carat diamond stud earring that he claims was stolen from him during the melee at the trendy Shore Club in 2005, where West was hosting a pre-party before that year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Knight was shot in the right leg at party in the still-unsolved crime, in which six shots were fired and few witnesses have come forward, despite a star-studded crowd that included Eddie Murphy, Jessica Alba and the Black Eyed Peas. According to the lawsuit, the label boss blames ‘Ye for allowing someone to smuggle a gun past security at the party, which his lawyers said was also supposed to be attended by people known to have beef with Knight. A bullet hit Knight in the right leg, shattering a bone and requiring surgery and months of physical therapy that cost more than $200,000; the suit seeks more than $1 million in damages. A spokesperson for West could not be reached for comment at press time, but in court papers the MC and the owners of the Shore Club have denied Knight’s claims of negligence. The lawsuit was originally brought in Los Angeles as part of Knight’s 2006 bankruptcy filing, but later moved to Miami at the request of the Shore Club’s owners. If Knight wins, he’ll have to share any damages with the bankruptcy trustee and the IRS. Related Artists Kanye West Marion “Suge” Knight
