Lil Wayne, Usher Help Romeo Santos ‘Revolutionize’ Bachata Music

‘It was the first time you hear an artist from the mainstream singing bachata,’ former Aventura frontman tells MTV News of single ‘Promise.’ By Christina Garibaldi Lil Wayne Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images Romeo Santos , the former lead singer of the popular bachata group Aventura , has taken a new step in his career, venturing out on his own as a solo artist. Mixing his signature bachata flair with some R&B, he is showing fans a whole new side on his debut album, Formula, Vol. 1. Hoping to spread his unique sound and style to a mainstream audience, Santos enlisted Lil Wayne for his latest single, “All Aboard.” “This song ‘All Aboard,’ that tune allowed me to expand and kind of offer my audience something totally different because it’s not bachata — I’m singing English and that was really fun,” Santos recently told MTV News. “I was a little nervous about that, but people actually really accepted it.” Santos and Weezy recently shot the video for “All Aboard” in Miami; he called the clip “sexy,” “seductive” and “elegant,” but also revealed that this collaboration came very close to not making his album. “I was just like, I like the song but it’s missing something, and at first I couldn’t figure out what it was,” Santos said. “What we did was we left 16 bars open, and I was like, you know, who would rip this track? Lil Wayne. So we reached out. It barely made the album because he’s a busy dude, so he actually got on the record two months after we submitted it. It was like, if we don’t get his vocals in the next two days we hit, and we got it, so we made it and the song is just really great.” Wayne isn’t the only artist Santos pulled in for his album. On his last single, “Promise,” he teamed up with Usher , who last week joined him onstage at Santos’ first of three sold-out shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden. “I felt at that moment once again I was going to revolutionize bachata ’cause it was the first time that you hear an artist from the mainstream singing bachata,” Santos said. “It was a big deal.” What do you think of Romeo Santos’ solo debut? Whitney Houston Sells 1 Million Albums, Singles Since Death

Singer’s catalog sales surged following her death, including nearly 900,000 individual tracks moved. By Gil Kaufman Whitney Houston Photo: Jan Persson/ Getty Images Much as they did after the deaths of Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse , fans of Whitney Houston rushed out to buy the late diva’s music in the wake of her passing on Saturday . Billboard reported that Houston’s only hits package, Whitney: The Greatest Hits, is poised to re-enter the Billboard 200 chart this week at #6 after selling 64,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Most amazingly, that jump in purchases represent just one full day of sales, since the reporting week ended on February 12. Houston was found dead midday in Los Angeles the day before of as-yet-undetermined causes. The uptick for the Greatest collection represents a 10,419 percent gain over the pervious week, when it moved just under 1,000 copies. A number of other Houston albums also moved back up the charts, including her 1986 debut Whitney Houston, which jumped to #72 on sales of 8,000 (a 3,901 percent rise), the soundtrack to “The Bodyguard” (#80 on sales of 8,000, up 5,213 percent) and her final studio album, I Look to You (#118 on sales of 5,000, up 3,901 percent). The magazine reported that more Houston albums were purchased in the last week — over 101,000 — than had been sold in all of 2011 and 2012 to date. The most impressive figures, though, were the number of digital tracks fans purchased. In all, there were 887,000 downloads over the past week, a gain of 5,730 over the previous week’s 15,000 tracks sold. The biggest gainer was, of course, her signature song, “I Will Always Love You,” which moved 195,000 units, a 6,742 percent gain over the previous week. While that song enters the Digital Songs chart at #3, seven other songs hit the Digital Songs chart as well, including “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” (#25, 74,000, up 8,769 percent), “Greatest Love of All” (#32, 60,000, up 7,270 percent), “How Will I Know” (#46, 43,000, up 5,767 percent), “I Have Nothing” (#53, 38,000, up 5,179 percent), “Saving All My Love for You” (#65, 33,000, up 6,423 percent), “One Moment in Time” (#74, 30,000, up 6,206 percent) and Houston’s rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” (#75, 29,000, up 8,278 percent). Next week’s chart should see an even bigger boost to Houston’s catalog as it will reflect a full week of sales. 3 Reasons Nicki Minaj Could Have Skipped The Super Bowl

Read this article:

The Super Bowl’s Half Time Show is always the spectacle when it comes to the big game. This year, 53-year-old Madonna proved why she is and always will be the Queen. She flexed her relevancy by sharing the stage with pop culture phenoms LMFAO, M.I.A., Nicki Minaj and Ceelo Green. LMFAO, Ceelo and M.I.A. all had their own standout moments, but what did our beloved Barbie get? Literally three seconds of grinding her booty on Madonna, 15 seconds of her signature face morphing rhymes and a crotch shot or two. Nicki’s used to being the spectacle, so why’d she get the shaft in this star-studded half time show? Here’s three reasons why Nicki could have saved the trip and watched from her couch. 1. M.I.A.’s Little Birdy We all know M.I.A. had her middle finger moment , and that’s what all the water cooler talk is about today. It’s no Janet Jackson nipple, but her cameo was as small as Nicki’s so M.I.A. made sure she was remembered in her performance with Madonna. 2. All About Ceelo Ceelo Green is having the best year ever. After his cult classic hit, “F*ck You,” this former Goodie Mobb vocalist is in high demand. Madonna let him take the spotlight from drum major to swathed in sequins and Ceelo drank every little shining second in. We almost forgot that Nicki was even a part of this show. Ceelo also gets a gold star for not lip syncing. 3. Cheers! Madonna had her own army of Minaj look-alike cheerleaders who got more stage time that Nicki. Something ain’t right when the extras get more play than the star. Do you think Nicki Minaj’s short appearance with Madonna at the Super Bowl was worth the trip? LMFAO Joining Madonna At Super Bowl?

Will.i.am claims party rockers LMFAO will perform with Madonna at Super Bowl. By Gil Kaufman LMFAO Photo: Steven Lawton/ FilmMagic It’s a good thing the Super Bowl provides its halftime performer with the biggest platform in television, because according to the latest rumors Madonna is going to need a seriously massive stage to hold all her guests at the February 5 game. Following reports that Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. as well as “The Voice” coach Cee Lo Green
may make appearances comes news that LMFAO could be called off the bench also. A year after his group, the on-hiatus Black Eyed Peas, played the big game,
will.i.am told English radio station Capital FM that his party rocking homies will be in the mix. “I’m going to the Super Bowl this year to see my group LMFAO perform with Madonna,” he said. “Check that out, Will.i.am Music Group is pretty freaking two for two! One year the Super Bowl, the next year another group part of the Super Bowl in collaboration with Madonna. That’s still happening.” According to sources, the Madonna asked Green to perform with her at the showdown in Indianapolis between the New York Giants and the New England Patriots, which is traditionally the most-watched TV event of the year. “The Insider” reports that he’s been flying to New York to rehearse with the pop icon. The sources add that he will contribute his signature flair to some of her classic tunes. The pairing would make sense given that the new season of “The Voice” premieres right after the Super Bowl next month. MTV News caught up with the Queen of Pop at her “W.E.” premiere earlier this week in New York, and the singer only had one tease about the Super Bowl gig. “I am not saying ‘Yes,’ and I am not saying ‘No,’ ” she replied when asked whether Minaj and M.I.A. would take the stage with her. She added, “Pom poms. That’s all I can tell you.” As if the pom poms and all the alleged guests aren’t enough, the halftime show will be “imagined” by trippy Canadian circus troupe Cirque du Soleil and Madonna’s longtime choreographer and creative director Jamie King. According to reports, the set list could include Madonna’s new single, “Give Me All Your Luvin,” as well as such classics as “Ray of Light,” “Vogue” and “Music.” In addition to her Super Bowl performance, Madonna’s fans are awaiting the release of her next studio album, M.D.N.A., out later this year. REVIEW: Vampires Aren’t the Only Things That Suck in Underworld: Awakening

It can be difficult to remember who we’re meant to be rooting for in the Underworld universe, with its unending werewolf/vampire feud, betrayals, hybrids, bloodlines, forbidden romances and immortal daddy issues. But that’s OK: Underworld: Awakening  sloughs off much of the convoluted gothic backstory of the first three films in the series in favor of skipping forward a dozen years and landing vinyl-clad bloodsucking heroine Selene (Kate Beckinsale) in a near future in which the world has gone into martial law lockdown after the discovery of non-humans in their midst. An introductory news clip montage presents talk of infections, purges and a “mass cleansing,” showing Lycans and vampires being exterminated by soldiers wielding ultraviolet lights and silver bullets. This would, you’d think, make the enemies in this film the humans, an element in which the franchise has otherwise shown relatively little interest. Yet halfway through, it’s back to wolves fighting vamps with no end or sense in sight. Chalk it up to a hobby — what else is there to keep you busy when you live forever? Underworld: Awakening is directed by Swedish filmmakers Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein, and it checks off all of the signature visual (fluttering trench coats) and thematic (must find the hybrid) tropes of the preceding films with even more narrative disjointedness than those earlier installments. Selene awakens in a lab in which she’s been kept in cryogenic stasis as “Subject 1,” her DNA used for experiments. She’s set free by Subject 2 (India Eisley), a young half-werewolf, half-vampire girl who turns out to be her daughter (the mechanics of this are not explained, nor does Selene seem at all curious about it or anything else in this crazy scenario). The film starts off at an awkward gallop and doesn’t slow down lest it tumble into one of the many giant plot holes — Selene’s escape from the lab is followed by the discovery of her connection to the girl, and soon the pair are running from werewolves and holing up with one of the few remaining vampire covens, where the leader (Charles Dance) clashes with his son David (Theo James) over whether to fight or hide and hope to simply survive. Underworld: Awakening ‘s world-building is so lackluster that a ridiculous mid-film revelation about the real motivations behind the experiments going on at the lab scarcely registers among the other larger questions about how all these badass immortal creatures were so easily hunted down in the first place and what the larger population actually thinks of them — the way the chief villainous scientist (Stephen Rea) refers to Selene’s daughter as “it” suggests the vampires deserve sympathy and have become victims instead of predators, but Selene also kills and/or snacks on a bunch of people right off the bat, which is pretty good reminder that humans have a point in this whole “extermination” thing. The story mechanics exist only to allow Selene to bounce off walls and strut in slow motion in her leather battle bustier with her hundred-bullet pistols, but even the action sequences have a rote familiarity to them, the Matrix -lite choreography paired with generic-looking monsters that appear to have been whipped up with a few CGI presets — “slimy,” “lumpy,” “clawed.” Aside from a moment or two of imaginative gore, the fighting has a sameness to it, Selene’s climactic tangle with a massive beast displaying as numbingly little tension as an early sequence in which she slices through a hallway full of guards. Most curious in  Underworld: Awakening ‘s expedition into absurdity is the fact that while franchise alum Scott Speedman doesn’t really appear in the film aside from flashbacks in the introduction and a few glimpses of what looks to be stand-in digitally fudged to look like him, his character is referenced and searched for all the time. Rather than definitively kill his character Michael off, the filmmakers chose to hold on to the possibility of bringing him back while saving on talent salary costs by having the girl be his stand-in as the film’s MacGuffin and theoretical emotional element. The result is an odd Waiting for Godot  quality in which everyone talks about Michael and waits for him to show up, and yet — he doesn’t. Wes Bentley does show up, jarringly, in a role that seems like it could be important, and then dies almost instantly. Michael Ealy plays a cop who comes to Selene’s aid for no reason other than that she’s run through her other potential allies. Murky and perpetually bluish in tinge,  Underworld: Awakening  does and gets little with the 3-D in which it’s being offered, and ends by shamelessly setting up a further and fatally unnecessary installment. The only interesting aspect to this film, other than its odd dance around its love interest in absentia, are its retro qualities — these days, all the other werewolves and vampires seem to be too busy trying to date teenagers to clash in tastefully grimy underground lairs with claws and double-fisted guns. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry performs in Jakarta, Indonesia on Thursday Photo: Splash News Katy Perry re-emerged Thursday (January 19) for her first concert since announcing her split with husband of one year, Russell Brand . The concert, which took place at the Sentul International Convention Centre in Jakarta, Indonesia, was the first of the two final shows on her California Dreams Tour. In video from the gig, Perry removed the wedding footage she typically showed during her performance of the Teenage Dream track “Not Like the Movies,” during which she sits on a swing while singing the dreamy ballad. For the revamped performance , the singer instead showed vintage-looking cartoons of animals as a placeholder, while swinging around in a red-and-white, candy-cane-striped gown. Check out photos of Katy’s spectacular concert looks. While she had been sporting short, blue hair as of late, for the show, she was wearing her signature black hair with Bettie Page bangs. Two days prior to hitting the stage, Perry shared her excitement for the show on Twitter , writing, “I’m SO EXCITED to FINALLY be in INDONESIA! U guys have waited forever #timetodeliver.” Hours before she took the stage, she had one more message for her fans when she tweeted, “It’s the day of the show y’all! Can’t WAIT! #JAKARTADREAMS.” The performance comes one week after she was snapped on the set of an Adidas commercial donning bright-blue hair and some threads designed by Jeremy Scott for the athletic brand. She has another show Monday in Manila, Philippines. She is also up for two awards at the Grammys , set to take place February 12. At last year’s show, the singer made a grand romantic gesture when she debuted footage from her Indian wedding to Brand during the broadcast. It was the first time anyone had seen any video from their nuptials. Did you catch Katy’s California Dreams Tour? Share your reviews in the comments! Ricky Gervais Targets Kim Kardashian, Justin Bieber In Golden Globes Monologue

‘I’ve sat through longer James Caeron speeches,’ comedian quips of Kardashian’s brief marriage. By Kevin P. Sullivan Ricky Gervais opens the 2012 Golden Globes Photo: HFPA/ NBC Ricky Gervais did exactly what the Hollywood Foreign Press Association hired him to do with his opening monologue at Sunday night’s (January 15) Golden Globes. He left the audience having to choose between laughing and cringing. Many of Hollywood’s biggest stars left the opener unscathed, a bit of a change from last year’s performance. Gervais still lived up to his reputation, however, and didn’t shy away from his signature brutal comedy style. Gervais opened his monologue with an appropriate question, considering how last year’s awards went. “Where was I?” he asked. “Nervous? Don’t be.” Despite all the talk of Gervais’ sharp wit before the show, he aimed the majority of his opening jokes at both the Globes themselves and NBC, the network airing the awards. Right off the bat, he joked, “Tonight, you get Britain’s biggest comedian, hosting the world’s second-biggest award show on America’s third-biggest network. Sorry, fourth.” That isn’t to say that the celebrities were off the hook during the monologue. Gervais paid particular attention to Kim Kardashian, cracking two jokes at the recent divorc
