AP, IRS and Benghazi Scandals: Will They Torpedo Obama Administration Agenda?

President Barack Obama finds himself dealing with three separate scandals in a confluence of events that could threaten his second-term agenda. He was already in damage control mode and trying to dismiss GOP criticism of his administration’s handling of September’s deadly Benghazi attacks. Now, the Internal Revenue Service has been under scrutiny for targeting conservative groups – a surprising admission that Obama vocally criticized. And meanwhile, a third scandal erupted after the Associated Press revealed that the Justice Department had secretly obtained its phone records. Even the most ardent liberals can’t ignore the impact of three potential scandals at once, as Obama’s plans for his second term might be in real trouble. Obama’s attempt to quiet his critics on Monday won’t be enough to lift his already tenuous second-term fortunes, some political analysts predict. The administration’s failure to get out information on Benghazi quickly allowed Republicans to turn the inquiry into a “sideshow,” as Obama calls it. His promise to hold people accountable “if” the allegations against the IRS are true will only hand his critics the opportunity to blame him for that too. No one believes Obama ordered the IRS to do this, and his outrage is appropriate, but it also didn’t position him as being on top of the matter at all. Rather than taking quick action, such as firing those involved or opening a full White House investigation, he may be at the mercy of the details. And we haven’t even gotten to the AP scandal yet. In moderate and liberal circles, the phone-records scandal, because it involves the AP and raises anew the specter of Big Brother, may be the worst yet. At least when it comes to Obama’s reputation. Of all people to be tied to an alleged trampling of the First Amendment, Obama has the most to lose. The question is whether he can bounce back. If he can identify where his administration went wrong in all three cases, acknowledge it and show concrete and decisive action in each case, maybe. If Obama falls short, he’s going to have a very ugly second term. All the right-wing impeach-Obama groups will no longer seem like the fringe of the GOP if his stature, credibility and reasonableness take a hit. The uneven responses to Benghazi, followed by revelations about “the deliberate targeting of conservative groups by the IRS,” and now the AP mess? All together, it may simply make it impossible, or at least much more difficult, for Obama to paint himself as the voice of reason, or above the fray, ever again.

1939 Jay-Z Look-Alike Photo Surfaces, Reignites Conspiracy Theories

A Jay-Z look-alike in a photo dated 1939 has surfaced, breathing new life into conspiracy theories about the rapper and his alleged ties to the Illuminati. The photograph of a Harlem man was dredged up by a New York Public Library digital curator and quickly went viral due to his similarities to the rapper: The image, titled “Harlem Loiterers,” shows the Jay-Z look-alike in a pea coat and newsboy cap, slouched against the front railing of a building. The New York Public Library confirmed the photo’s authenticity and said that it was taken by an American photographer named Sid Grossman in 1939. In a post on the library’s Tumblr, Sylviane A. Diouf, curator of the organization’s digital archives, said the Jay-Z likeness was the first thing she noticed: “I was immediately struck by the similarity to Jay-Z and actually laughed out loud … I still hope somebody will tell us who that young man really was.” The New York Times attributed the viral photo to the human brain’s tendency to search out facial similarities as a common occurrence in our daily lives. Not surprisingly, this explanation has not satisfied the Internet. While most Reddit commenters were good with a laugh or a Jay-Z pun, the conspiracy theorists suggested that the photo was evidence of … something. The photo has reignited the longtime debate over whether or not Jay-Z is a member of the Illuminati, the mysterious secret society that runs us all. At least one website has noted Jay-Z’s ring, which looks suspiciously like an Illuminati ring, an ancient emblem of the long-rumored, elite group. Illuminati theorists believe that the ultra-secret occult society rules the world using sophisticated mind control techniques, and that Jay-Z is a member. How a 1939 doppelganger fits into that, we have no idea. Details … Certain subreddits have espoused even crazier ideas than that. One conspiracy theory is that the rapper and business mogul traveled back in time to 1939 to conduct some informal research for The Great Gatsby . Seriously. Never mind that Gatsby takes place more than a decade earlier … or that time machines do not exist. Again, just a few minor details. Another fun one? Jay-Z is a vampire. As we know from The Vampire Diaries , the blood-sucking beasts don’t age like humans do. Think about it.

KimYe Kaught Up In TSA Security Investigation After Boarding A Commercial Flight Without Pat-Down

The Transportation Security Administration don’t play that Kim Kardashian And Kanye West Involved In TSA Security Investigation According to TMZ reports : Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are at the center of a TSA investigation following a major security violation at JFK yesterday … but the TSA tells TMZ Kimye is NOT to blame. We’ve learned … K&K had taken a flight from Brazil to JFK on Tuesday, where the plan was to catch a connecting flight to Los Angeles. But once they landed in NY, the couple met up with an airline greeter … who, according to the TSA, allowed them to bypass a key security checkpoint to get them to their next flight as quickly as possible. After Kim and Kanye took their seats on the L.A.-bound plane … a TSA agent yanked them off the flight … and made K&K go through another layer of security. We’re told the plane was delayed for roughly an hour while the couple was screened by TSA agents. TSA claims that KimYe was not at fault for the security breach. “An airline employee escorted the two travelers through a non-public area in order to provide expedited access to their domestic flight.” “In doing so, the airline employee violated security protocols by permitting the travelers to by-pass the TSA security checkpoint. TSA officials learned of the violation and conducted a private screening of the two passengers in the area of the jetway.” “The passengers were cleared to board their flight, which departed after a delay of approximately 50 minutes. TSA is actively investigating the incident.” The couple ultimately touched down in L.A. … where they were greeted by a gaggle of paparazzi … but seemed incredibly calm considering all they had been through. This airline employee is going to lose his job and possibly catch a charge behind being a KimYe stan. The least Kim and Kanye could do is try to get homie a gig for his effort. Image via Splash

Quote Of The Day: “Gay Will Never Be The New Black…” Gay White Student Takes A Stand Against Equating Homophobia To Racism

Gay White Student Examines Similarities Between Struggles With Racism And Homophobia A gay white male student recently shared his thoughts on the similarities between being a black person dealing with racism and being a gay white person dealing with homophobia. via Huffington Post Mainstream gay culture privileges the white narrative, and it does so at the expense of its own legitimacy. As Baldwin understands and so eloquently states, the fight against homophobia and racism are undoubtedly entwined through their shared struggle for human dignity. However, conflating the two does discernible harm, both to those persons of color who are repeatedly forgotten in progressive social movements, and to white LGBTQ persons who tarnish their own humanity by forgetting the humanity of others. In one of the most interesting excerpts from the piece, the student examines Baldwin’s point that white gay citizens often feel slighted because society teaches them that they are entitled to ‘white privelege’ and therefore supposed to be protected from bias and hatred. Baldwin explains that white LGBTQ men and women feel slighted precisely because they know that had they been straight, they would have been heirs to incomparable privilege. In a 1984 interview with Richard Goldstein, then the editor of the Village Voice, Baldwin said, “I think white gay people feel cheated because they were born, in principle, in a society in which they were supposed to be safe. The anomaly of their sexuality puts them in danger, unexpectedly.” He went on to say: Their reaction seems to me in direct proportion to their sense of feeling cheated of the advantages which accrue to white people in a white society. There’s an element, it has always seemed to me, of bewilderment and complaint. Now that may sound very harsh, but the gay world as such is no more prepared to accept black people than anywhere else in society. He concludes the write up with the thought that although strides are being made with gay rights, they will never be the same as the struggles with racism. As we celebrate Black History Month this February, and as we await the Supreme Court’s decision on marriage equality, we must remember that the struggle to restore dignity to people is not finished. The work to ensure that all people have access to fair and equitable employment, health care and proper medical attention and aren’t targets for violence by the police or their fellow community members must continue even after gays and lesbians are granted the right to marry the persons they love. This is not a new civil rights movement as some have said but a different one. Baldwin’s legacy teaches me, as a white person and an LGBTQ activist, that gay will never be the new black, and that the fight for racial equality is far from over.

‘Dredd’ Trailer: Five Key Scenes

Karl Urban makes his debut as the helmeted arbiter of justice in the first official trailer for ‘Dredd,’ in theaters September 21. By Josh Wigler A scene from “Dredd” Photo: He says he’s the law — but do you believe him? Longtime “Judge Dredd” fans (heck, anyone old enough to have seen an R-rated movie in the 1990s) have plenty of reasons to be skeptical about “Dredd,” the Pete Travis-directed adaptation of the “2000 AD” comic book, judging purely on how the Sylvester Stallone film of 1995 was handled. By all accounts, “Dredd” is not that film. It takes its inspiration from sources much closer to the original text and has a leading man — Karl Urban — who takes his job very seriously. So did the “Dredd” trailer do it for you? It did it for us … mostly. Here are five key elements from the “Dredd” trailer that informed our verdict. Welcome to Mega City One (at 00:05) Gritty, impossibly huge and absolutely the last place on the planet you would ever want to live: that’s Mega City One, and from the opening moments of the trailer, all of those points are clearly established. Hooligans run amok fueled by all kinds of illicit drugs, with one in particular gaining new traction: Slo-Mo, a dangerous product that “makes the brain feel as though time is passing at 1 percent of the normal speed.” Why anyone would want to be on such a drug in the middle of Mega City One is beyond us, but it’s certain to pave the way for some fantastic action, based on the trailer alone. Big Ma-Ma’s House (at 00:32) A hero is only as worthy as his villain, and in the case of “Dredd,” the quality of the nemesis won’t be a problem. Lena Headey of “Game of Thrones” fame is the bad guy here as Ma-Ma Madrigal, ruling the roost of a drug empire with enough ruthless efficiency to make Queen Cersei Lannister blush. Her scarred visage and crystal-clear goals — “If we play this right, we can take the whole city,” she tells her underlings — make her a force to be reckoned with, and Headey seems to be having a ball in the role. Judge and Be Judged (at 00:59) We’ll get to Urban specifically in a second. In the meantime, look at all of the judges! Dredd explains their role in Mega City One thusly: “800 million people living in the ruin of the old world, and only one thing fighting for order in the chaos: the men and women of the Hall of Justice.” Though “Dredd” will center mostly on the titular judge and his new trainee Cassandra Anderson (played by a bleach-blond Olivia Thirlby), it’s nice to see some attention paid to the greater gaggle of law enforcers. Fifty Shades of “Raid” (at 01:19) If you thought the plot of “Dredd” seemed a little familiar after watching the trailer, you’re not losing it. There are undeniable similarities between this and “The Raid,” the incredible Indonesian martial arts film from Gareth Evans that debuted this past spring. Ma-Ma Madrigal has her drug operation holed up in one massive tower that she has full control over, not unlike “The Raid” drug kingpin Tama. Also not unlike Tama, Madrigal commands all the tenants of her building to seek and destroy Dredd and Anderson. So, yes, the similarities are there, but there are more than enough differences in the setting, genre and characters — not to mention the action-dictating Slo-Mo — that we’re more than happy to look the other way. (Besides, we’ll take another “Raid” movie however we can get it, even if it’s called “Dredd.”) Is He the Law? (at 01:50) That’s the big question, isn’t it? On paper, Karl Urban is a fantastic choice for Judge Dredd. In motion? That might be another story. His Dredd spits out a few too many one-liners for some folks’ tastes — “negotiations are over,” “the sentence is death,” etc. — but he’s got the look, the voice and the attitude down by our estimation. Whether or not that all adds up to a fully formed Dredd remains to be seen, but the trailer leaves us cautiously optimistic, if not fully sold, on Urban’s performance. “Dredd” is set to hit theaters on September 21. Dominique Moceanu Reveals Long-Lost Sister Jen Bricker: An Acrobat With No Legs!

Dominique Moceanu, a member of the 1996 Olympic gold-medal-winning US women’s gymnastics team, received the biggest bombshell of her life. As her father was dying, and weeks before she gave birth to her first child, she got a letter fro, Jen Bricker, saying that she her biological sister. As ABC’s 20/20 reported last Friday, Bricker revealed that their parents gave her up for adoption when they found out that she had no legs. Dominique Moceanu 20/20 Interview The news was equally shocking to Bricker, who grew up idolizing Moceanu, the youngest member of the US Olympic teams “Magnificent Seven.” “I wouldn’t shut up about Dominique!” said Bricker, who incredibly had no idea at the time that the gymnastics champion was her sister. “I knew she was Romanian. I knew we looked alike. Her biggest fan!” Amazingly, Bricker, now 24, is a gymnast too. Having no legs didn’t stop her from excelling in volleyball, basketball and softball in her youth. But, just like her sister, 30, her true passion is gymnastics. Bricker even made it all the way to the Junior Olympics as a power tumbler. When Bricker was 16, her parents, an Illinois couple who adopted her as a baby, revealed to her that Moceanu was actually her older sister. Four years later, Bricker sent a letter to Dominique. Published in Moceanu’s new memoir Off Balance , the letter included photos and Bricker’s adoptive papers. Bricker wrote to her sister: “I feel that I have one chance to show you I’m not some crazy person, but I’m sure after seeing all of the papers, you’ll see that I’m serious.” Moceanu recounted to ABC her reaction to the letter: “It was the biggest bombshell of my life. Rage was my first emotion, had my life been a lie? I had this sister that was born who was given up for adoption, and I never knew it.” When she confronted her parents, they told her that Bricker was in fact her sister and was born one day after Moceanu’s sixth birthday. Her mother, Camelia, said that her husband, Dmitry, forced her to give up the baby, saying that they couldn’t afford the medical care. “I never saw my baby. I never held her, never touched her, never even smelled her. I desperately wanted to, but your father told me we had to give her up and that was that,” Camelia told Dominique. Moceanu had had a tumultuous relationship for years with her parents, who had been athletes and put her in gymnastics at age three. At 17, Moceanu legally emancipated herself from her parents, whom she claimed had repressed her and squandered her fortune. She also had a restraining order against her father, who had stalked her and who she feared had hired someone to kill two of her close friends. They later reconciled, however, and Dmitry even walked Moceanu down the aisle at her 2006 wedding before he passed away in 2008. The sisters now have a close bond and continue to marvel at their similarities. “The tones in our voices, our handwriting, the way we laugh and chuckle. It’s mind-blowing,” Moceanu said of Bricker, who enjoys a strong career as an acrobat and aerialist and has even toured the world with Britney Spears !

The Real Housewives of New Jersey Recap: Keepin’ it Classy in Punta Cana

The Real Housewives of New Jersey made their way to the Dominican Republic’s Punta Cana this week with one question on their minds. Can’t we all just get along? What are the odds of that? Let’s find out in our +/- recap! Have you ever noticed how incredibly blinged out Teresa’s phone is? Plus 5 because I don’t think you could fit one more sparkle, sequin, or rhinestone and still be able to speak. But the trip really starts off with the packing. Seriously, they’re going away for four days and Teresa has nine bags. And I’ve never seen so much leopard print luggage in my life. Apparently it’s a hot item in Jersey. Plus 8 to Lauren who points out that if sharks are attracted to shiny objects, Teresa and Melissa are shark bait. That could put a quick end to this vacation. There were so many things that made me ill in this episode it’s hard to count them all … but here goes. Did Joe Guidice, Richie, Albie, and Chris really have to jump out of the vehicles to pee on the side of the road? As if TV doesn’t make Jersey look trashy enough, these idiots have to prove it to the Dominican Republic. Minus 10 . Apparently they needed their Mommies to ask them if they had to go before they left the airport. Which was worse? Watching Joe Gorga sniff Melissa’s bikini bottoms or listening to Joe Guidice complain about how his wife’s menstrual cycle was going to ruin vacation sex? Minus 20 because I almost turned off the TV. Then we got to watch Teresa have her own little bikini fashion show. Talk about needing to be the center of attention.
