‘Buffy’ Creator Joss Whedon Reacts To ‘Sad’ Reboot Plans

‘I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands,’ the writer/director laments in a message to E! Online. By Eric Ditzian Joss Whedon Photo: Dave Hogan/Getty Images Buffy Summers will rise again. Just don’t expect her creator to be very excited about the prospect. Joss Whedon, who penned 1992’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and then adapted the movie into the beloved and long-running WB series, has spoken out after Warner Bros. announced plans to reboot the property for the big screen. Characteristically resigned, self-aware and condescending all at once, Whedon spoke about his reluctance to see his characters taken over by others, even as he acknowledged doing the same thing himself. “This is a sad, sad reflection on our times, when people must feed off the carcasses of beloved stories from their youths — just because they can’t think of an original idea of their own, like I did with my ‘Avengers’ idea that I made up myself,” he wrote in a statement to E! Online . Whedon is currently shepherding an adaptation of “The Avengers,” Marvel’s superhero all-star franchise, toward a theatrical release. While he realizes such pop culture appropriation is commonplace, he still bristles at the idea that it’s happening to his work. “I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death,” he said. “But, you know, AFTER. I don’t love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I’m also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly. I can’t wish people who are passionate about my little myth ill.” This isn’t the first time Whedon has released a statement mixing humor and pathos after a newsworthy development involving his work. After Fox canceled “Dollhouse” last year, he announced , “I’m off to pursue Internet ventures/binge drinking. Possibly that relaxation thing I’ve read so much about. By the time the last episode airs, you’ll know what my next project is. But for now there’s a lot of work still to be done, and disappointment to bear.” Let the disappointment begin anew. Before signing off from his latest message “Leave me to my pain,” Whedon jokingly wondered if vampires are even popular anymore and promised he’ll soon be shooting a new “Batman” flick. “Because there’s a franchise that truly needs updating,” he wrote. “So look for ‘The Dark Knight Rises Way Earlier Than That Other One And Also More Cheaply And In Toronto,’ rebooting into a theater near you.” How do you feel about a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot? Simon Cowell Weighs In On ‘American Idol’ Judge Steven Tyler

‘I always said it had to be someone who wasn’t better looking than me, and they achieved it,’ former ‘Idol’ judge quips. By Eric Ditzian Steven Tyler Photo: Jesse Grant/ WireImage.com Courtesy of “The View,” we’ve already checked out a sneak peek of the dynamic between the new gaggle of “American Idol” judges: Randy Jackson has shifted into a “Yo!”-spouting elder statesman, Steven Tyler is the F-bomb-dropping wildcard and Jennifer Lopez has refashioned herself as the sweet-smiling voice of the reason. What does ex-“Idol” judge Simon Cowell think of all this? If Tyler and his outsized personality are meant to fill the vacuum left by Cowell and his acerbic commentary, the British reality star is fine with that. “I always said it had to be someone who wasn’t better looking than me, and they achieved it,” Cowell said before the Founders Awards at the International Emmy Awards in New York, according to The Associated Press . The AP reports that Cowell pronounced himself happy that Tyler won the “Idol” judging job and that Jackson says they’re all having fun on the show. The Aerosmith frontman certainly seems to be enjoying himself, saying in September, “Some of the kids are so young that I’m not sure if they can get how long it’s taken me to be successful. They were all on fire. They were spunky and crazy and over the top.” While Cowell takes a step back from the spotlight and preps the American version of “The X-Factor” for Fox (set to debut in the fall of 2011), he doled out one piece of advice to Tyler. “[I]t’s a fun job,” he said. “You’ve got to take it like that. You can’t take it too seriously.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. ‘Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows’ Trailer Warns Of ‘Dark Times’

Second-to-last ‘Potter’ installment hits theaters November 19. By Kara Warner Daniel Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” Photo: Warner Bros. As promised, the latest trailer for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” arrived online Wednesday (September 22), and it is a doozy. Fans who have been following the trajectory of the film’s crafty promotional plan will have a lot to take in after giving it a look-see. Like the TV spots and clips that have been released before it, this trailer opens with an ominous, almost sinister feel. “These are dark times, there is no denying,” Bill Nighy says as Minister of Magic Rufus Scrimgeour, who is shown giving a press conference on the dire state of world affairs. “Harry … tell me where he is,” Voldemort’s (Ralph Fiennes) serpent-like whisper follows, voicing over images of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named creepily gliding into Dumbledore’s tomb, and then a quick cut of Harry standing alone outside a tent on a rocky landscape. “Our world has faced no greater threat than it does today,” Scrimgeour’s voice continues, over shots of Hermione and Ron looking serious and concerned, and then Harry and Hermione are shown visiting his parents’ grave. “But you can’t fight the war on your own, Mr. Potter,” Scrimgeour’s voice continues. “He is too strong.” As the Minister’s words trail off, Harry is shown holding a broken piece of mirror, which shows Dumbledore falling into a dark abyss. The trailer then kicks into high gear, with dramatic music and shots of preparation for various battles, including a very poignant meeting of Voldemort’s Death Eaters, at which the duplicitous Severus Snape is seated. “We have infiltrated the Ministry,” he says. Cut to chaos at the Ministry, with stuffy politicians trying to maintain order (one of whom is forever-pink-clad Dolores Umbridge flashing her characteristic grimace/facade of calm), and then more familiar shots of Harry, Ron and Hermione traveling cross-country on their journey, over rocky hills, in the middle of a bustling London. This is followed by a series of escape-esque shots, including seeing the six Harry clones/look-alikes, which readers of the book will remember is the tool the Order of the Phoenix use in an attempt to safely move the real Harry from one location to the next. Cut to an impressive array of quick action shots: The Death Eaters attacking Bill and Fleur’s wedding! Hagrid trying to whisk Harry away on his motorbike! Everyone running through the forest! A mid-air magic fight with wizards wielding wands while riding Thestrals! There is even the very tense argument between Ron and Harry in the tent that leads to a physical altercation. More battling! Houses destroyed! Harry, Ron and Hermione running! All leading up to Voldemort’s creepy voice-over once more: “I have seen your heart,” he says. “And it is mine,” before sending a menacing flash of lightning into the sky that cleverly forms the film’s title. Cue the all-over-body chills. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” will hit theaters on November 19. What do you think of the trailer?!? ‘American Idol’ Judges Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez Talk ‘Tough Love’

‘We’re sure going to send some people home with broken hearts,’ Aerosmith frontman insists. By Kara Warner Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images We have been following news on season 10 of “American Idol” before season nine even began. It all started back in January with the shock of Simon Cowell’s departure . Then Ellen DeGeneres was out ! Then Kara DioGuardi ! The rumored new judges piled on from there, with names like Jessica Simpson, Elton John and Justin Timberlake thrown up for consideration. Eventually, that field was narrowed to two: Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler , who were announced as official “Idol” judges during a Fox press conference Wednesday (September 22). One of the many questions asked of the new panelists during the big event was: Will they get in touch with their inner-Simon Cowell and be tough on the contestants? “How tough will I be? I believe in tough love,” Lopez said. “But I don’t think I will ever, as an artist myself, I could never be cruel to another artist,” she added. “I think there are definitely better ways to get your point across. I’ve mentored on the show before, so I think people have seen that and kinda can feel how I’ll be — or maybe they’ll be surprised.” Tyler said he, too, has no plans for outrageous tongue-lashings and will instead be trying to protect himself from getting too attached. “We’re sure going to send some people home with broken hearts,” Tyler admitted. “But with all that we’ve been through in our careers, living vicariously through the young talent out there, it’s going to be hard. But it’s also going to be fun, because they’re stepping up to the plate, and so are we.” Who will be tougher: Lopez or Tyler? Sound off in the comments! ‘American Idol’ Judges’ Panel Is Finalized

New panelists will be revealed at a news conference Wednesday. By Katie Byrne Photo: FOX Now that we know Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi are out, who’s in? After months of speculation, “American Idol” page will finally announce the season-10 judges’ panel next week. Ryan Seacrest will make the announcement at a news conference at the Forum in Inglewood, California, on Wednesday at noon PT, joined by the new judges. Original judge Randy Jackson appears to be the only returning panelist, although even he hasn’t been confirmed for the next season. The loudest rumors have Jackson joined by Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and singer/actress Jennifer Lopez. Whether the panel will return to the three-person format it started with or add a wild card into the mix as a fourth judge is unknown. Back in July, Tyler was asked what he would be up to following Aerosmith’s tour, and he seemed to confirm reports of his involvement with the reality show. “Probably going to be a judge on ‘American Idol,’ ” Tyler said. “I’m doing it! What do you think?” While Lopez hasn’t commented on the rumors , various outlets have reported that she has already signed a $12 million deal to join the show. The judges’ panel isn’t the only thing changing for the show’s 10th season. On Wednesday, it was announced that “Idol” hopefuls could submit online audition videos to MySpace for the first time. The show also dropped its age limit to 15 to make sure it doesn’t miss out on a potential Justin Bieber. Who do you think will be on the new judges’ panel? Share your theories in the comments!
