‘American Idol’ Producer Simon Fuller Should Judge, Carly Smithson Says

‘It’s his show and he created it, and he’s a very, very intelligent, nice man,’ the season-seven contestant reasons. By Jocelyn Vena Carly Smithson Photo: MTV News Carly Smithson may not have had the pleasure of working with Kara DioGuardi or Ellen DeGeneres during her stint on “American Idol,” but the We Are the Fallen singer does have an idea about who should fill some of spaces left by them and Simon Cowell at the judges’ table next season. “I have always actually thought that [executive producer] Simon Fuller should be the replacement judge, ’cause it’s his show and he created it and he’s a very, very intelligent, nice man, but I have no idea,” the season-seven contestant told MTV News at the VMA Radio Forum on Friday. “I mean, I had a pedicure with the producers the other day. The girls were all getting ready for the Emmys. They have no clue what’s going on. Only time will tell.” Smithson added that she feels fortunate to have been on the show when she was. “I was lucky to be a part of the original lineup,” she said. “That’s a very cool thing. I had the terrible three, Simon, Randy and Paula.” So, what does she think producers should be looking for in future judges? “I tried to kind of keep a tab on it. I was on tour while the show was on air, so I didn’t really get to see what Ellen was like. I love her as a talk-show host, but I wasn’t really sure how it was going to play out with music,” she said. “It’s hard. … The whole thing about the show is the fact that Simon is really rude, and I hope they can continue the show and find that magical kind of thing.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ miss ” American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Guidos and the BP Oil Spill Are This Year’s Biggest Television Stars

This marks a sad state of affairs for the world: A global language survey determined that the words “BP Spillcam,” “dysfunctional” (associated with Modern Family ) and “Guido” were the most used words of the 2009-2010 television season. The survey used a math formula to track words and phrases used in print and electronic media. Other popular choices included “Lady Gaga,” “rude” (associated with Simon Cowell) and “Asperger’s Syndrome.” Better luck next year, Glee and Oprah. [ Reuters ]

‘American Idol’: We Have Never Used AutoTune

Controversy over use of pitch-correction software on ‘X Factor’ causes show to release statement. By Gil Kaufman David Archuleta Photo: Fox In the wake of the scandal over the use of the pitch-correcting software AutoTune on the season premiere of the British singing reality show “X-Factor,” the producers of “American Idol” released a statement denying that they had altered contestants’ vocals during the competition. “We have never, nor would we ever, use Auto-Tuning during the ‘American Idol’ competition,” unnamed producers of the show said in a statement released Thursday, according to the Associated Press . No allegations had been made that “Idol” had employed the technology, but the blowback from the “X-Factor” scandal was so bad that it seems “Idol” brass felt they needed to nip any suggestions in the bud. As the AP noted, singers on “Idol” are often criticized for sounding “pitchy”; during the show’s most recent season, mop-haired finalist Tim Urban was often so clearly out of tune that his run on the show surprised many longtime watchers. There have been other mini-scandals on “Idol,” such as the admission last year that the group sing-alongs that begin the results shows are lip-synched . But no one has suggested that performances that count toward the competition are tweaked. In response to the controversy, judge and producer Simon Cowell said, “people have got to be able to trust ‘The X Factor’ … we are not faking anything,” and promised that AutoTune will not be used again on the show. The Daily Mail reported that Cowell spent the week speaking to producers of the show — which he will bring to the U.S. in 2011 — and that an episode originally intended to air on September 4 will be shown this Saturday in an effort to move beyond the doctored-vocals scandal. Producers of the show claimed that AutoTune was only used to clean up sound from the audition footage, which is shot in a studio where there are more than 40 microphones in the room. But even a cursory listen to the tweaked bits from last week makes clear that the software beloved by musicians from T-Pain to Sean Kingston was used to clean up shaky vocals from a number of contestants. “X Factor” sources have admitted that AutoTune has been employed in the past as well, but denied that it had been used to make some singers sound better and others worse for entertainment purposes. Though “Idol” producers made the pre-emptivestrike against AutoTune , they still did not pull back the curtain on the most pressing “Idol” issue: who are the show’s new judges? With the fresh faces expected to take their seats after Labor Day, “Idol” watchers are eager to get confirmation on reports that Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and singer/actress Jennifer Lopez have joined the panel. Simon Cowell Outlaws Auto-Tune on U.S. X-Factor

Just a day after word came out that the U.K. X-Factor had auto-tuned its competitors’ voices to “deliver the most entertaining experience possible for viewers,” Simon Cowell has banned the performance-enhancing software. Neither the U.K. series nor the U.S. version (which premieres in September 2011) will be permitted to use auto-tune to correct “edited pre-recorded auditions.” Now if only Simon had the authority to ban its gratuitous use on Glee … [ Deadline ]

Simon Cowell’s ‘X Factor’ Embroiled In Auto-Tune Controversy

Spokesperson for British reality show admits that contestants’ vocals were enhanced. By Gil Kaufman Photo: ITV There were plenty of times during the lackluster recent season of “American Idol” when fans probably wished producers would allow the weaker finalists to Auto-Tune their shaky vocals. Maybe they should be watching England’s “X Factor” instead. A major scandal is brewing over revelations that the show enhanced the vocals of some contestants during Saturday’s season premiere, with some of the very obviously tweaked vocals so clumsily edited they could have been included on a T-Pain single. According to BBC News , a spokesperson for the show — created and produced by former “Idol” judge Simon Cowell (who is bringing it to the U.S. in 2011) — admitted that post-production work was done on some of the singers’ vocals because of interference caused by the number of microphones used during filming. One of the most obvious enhancements was made to contestant Gamu Nhengu’s take on Katrina and the Waves’ iconic “Walking on Sunshine,” during which her vocals are very clearly massaged to keep her in key. The post-production face-lift was almost laughable during singer Shirlena Johnson’s cover of Duffy’s “Mercy,” which had her struggling to stay in tune even amid heavy-handed studio trickery. “The judges make their decisions at the auditions stage based on what they hear on the day, live in the arena,” the spokesman explained about the enhancements added after Saturday’s first program, which was viewed by more than 11 million people. “The footage and sound is then edited and dubbed into a finished program, to deliver the most entertaining experience possible for viewers. When it gets to the live shows, it will be all live.” The revelation has resulted in a raft of complaints by angry fans, who felt cheated after Cowell told Nhengu that she was “really talented,” which helped her advance to the next round. One contestant who reached the live finals last year slammed the show for trying to deceive fans. Daniel Evans wrote on his Twitter page, “I am big campaigner against auto-tune in the music industry, it’s all over the charts but to hear it on a so-called live show is just plain sad. … It’s like an epidemic, and I won’t be watching again. Sad times for real music fans.” According to England’s Daily Mirror, the vocal trickery expands well beyond the initial audition rounds, with one former unnamed production staffer saying, “It was an open secret on the show that Auto-Tune was used to both make contestants slightly more on-key or off-key. On some occasions it was used to such extremes that while the contestant may have sounded like they were hitting the right note, the backing band had gone right out of tune. … It has been used for a long time on the show both for the auditions and the live shows.” The paper also reported that Cowell ordered an immediate ban on Auto-Tune being used in future shows, while insisting to friends that he was shocked by the claims and plans to launch an investigation.
