Crystal Bowersox On ‘American Idol’ Outcome: ‘We Both Win’

‘My life is never going to be the same, and I’m ready for all of it,’ she says backstage after the finale. By Kelley L. Carter Crystal Bowersox Photo: MTV News LOS ANGELES — Don’t cry for Crystal Bowersox. Before Ryan Seacrest announced Lee DeWyze as the new American Idol , the single mom said she knew she wouldn’t be taking home the top prize. “I knew Lee was going to win,” she said backstage, minutes after the finale ended. “People seem to be surprised by that. But I had a feeling. I couldn’t be happier for him. He deserves every minute of this. There wasn’t really a reason why [I thought I wouldn’t win]. It was just something that I felt and I knew, and I’m fine with that. Before the show … I had this strange sense of peace and calm. I’ve been that way through the whole season. If you haven’t noticed, I’m just mellow. I was ready and willing … for the outcome. We both win. It’s not win or lose; it’s winner and non-winner. Both of us are going to have very successful careers, and we’re going to be friends for a long time.” For Bowersox, winning was performing alongside Alanis Morissette and Joe Cocker. She also said she was moved by the tributes for Simon Cowell . “Joe Cocker is a living legend, and every noise, grunt that came out of him, every fiber in my being felt it,” she said. “He didn’t give me any advice, but he kept calling me ‘Angel.’ He said, ‘I know your name is Crystal, but I want to call you Angel.’ And I’m like, ‘That’s fine. You can call me whatever you want. You’re Joe Cocker!’ ” Bowersox said she learned a lot about herself during the “American Idol” experience. The most important lesson? “I can walk in heels — downstairs, nonetheless,” she said, joking about her Tuesday night performance, where she wobbled a bit in high heels. “I’ve learned a lot about myself and I’ve learned a lot about the business. I already knew who I was, but I’m picking the things that I like and adding to it. My life is never going to be the same, and I’m ready for all of it.” Up next, Bowersox says she’s going to go “hug my baby boy and get back to living.” She’ll start to prepare for the summer tour and also plans to get to work on her album. “Now the real work begins,” she said. American Idol Season 9: Lee Is The New Idol

On Tuesday night, Crystal Bowersox and Lee Dewyze performed three songs each. On Wednesday, both participated in Idol’s grand finale paying tribute to Simon Cowell on his last night on the show before proclaiming the winner of season 9 American Idol. Crystal was the judges’ choice for all three rounds of songs while Lee went into the final night of performances as a favorite. In the end of the show, Lee DyWyze is the winner. Although his Tuesday-night performances weren’t as consistent as Crystal’s, the judges repeatedly remarked on an inching-forward which made Lee someone worth rooting for. Wednesday night is chiefly as a farewell to Simon Cowell, who is the kingpin of the judges’ panel. Paula Abdul was also there, looking absolutely fantastic. She spoke of Simon with humor and affection. She said that American Idol’s not going to be the same without Simon, but it has to go on. Simon Cowell Gets Elaborate Farewell From Paula Abdul, ‘American Idol’

‘I didn’t think I was going to be this emotional, but I genuinely am,’ Simon says on ‘Idol’ finale. By James Montgomery Simon Cowell Photo: Getty Images Although the main point of Thursday night’s (May 26) “American Idol” finale was — in theory, at least — to crown a new champion, ever since Simon Cowell announced back in January that he’d be leaving the show at the end of season nine, fans had been wondering just how tonight’s show would unfold. Now we know. Cowell’s departure was treated with equal parts humor and sadness, a mix of a Friars Club roast and a genuine, heartfelt tribute show. And, somewhat fittingly, it culminated in the single largest performance in ‘Idol” history. Show producers poked fun at Cowell’s notoriously prickly demeanor with a series of vignettes, titled “Simon Cowell: Uncovered,” which featured some of his greatest put-downs and bust-ups, along with joking barbs from his soon-to-be former fellow “Idol’ judges. “I think Simon has an incredible poker face. He’s got an ability to really hold back what he’s feeling,” Kara DioGuardi said, while a montage of Cowell cracking up during particularly odious auditions rolled. “He’s very professional.” “Is Simon a flirt?” Paula Abdul asked with a laugh at one point. Abdul, of course, shared the judges’ table for eight years with Cowell. “Yeah, if you’re a mirror,” she said. There was also a song that sampled some of Cowell’s greatest put-downs (“You sounded like a cat being thrown off a skyscraper”; “If you win this contest, we will have failed”; “You sounded like a background singer for a background singer,” etc.). The ditty was performed by comedian Dane Cook, but oddly, it was interrupted by onetime Cowell sparring mate Ian Bernardo, who swiped the mic and launched into a “Kanye moment,” declaring, “Nobody cares, it’s all about Ian Bernardo tonight. I’m going to replace you tonight Simon!” The mic was quickly wrested away from Bernardo by none other than fellow “Idol” oddball Normund Gentle, as cameras pulled away and show producers cut to commercial break. And yet, for a guy who had spent nine seasons shooting down the dreams of “Idol” hopefuls, it was a strangely fitting tribute too. Also jibing with both the “oddball” category was Abdul’s appearance. She appeared center-stage to pay homage to her friend and former colleague, but things quickly devolved, as she joked in her patented mumbled banter about leaving the show because she and Cowell had a love child. Still, things quickly improved from there, as Cowell was serenaded by seven of the eight “Idol’ champions, all of whom had been crowned under his watch (only David Cook was M.I.A.). Then a group of some of the show’s other favorites from seasons past joined the seven, swelling the total number of performers to well over 30. As the crowd cheered, host Ryan Seacrest beckoned Cowell onto the stage, and gave him the microphone. Standing center-stage, with some of the greatest “Idols” surrounding him, the man known for his massive ego seemed downright touched. “I didn’t think I was going to be this emotional, but I genuinely am. … The show goes forward, it will be different, but I just want to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the support, the fun, and your sense of humor,” Cowell said. “You know what he truth is, when everyone asks who’s going to replace me, who’s going to be the next judge, the truth is, you guys are the judge of this show. And you’ve done an incredible job over the years … it’s been a blast.” And then he turned to Seacrest — his sparring partner of nine years — and, getting a bit choked up, said, “Even you … I’m going to honestly, honestly miss you.” As the show cut to commercial, Cowell smiled and waved to the crowd … it was genuinely touching. The end of an era. The beginning of the end. Both. Oh, and like, 20 minutes later, Lee DeWyze won. As if anyone cared. What did you think of the “Idol” farewell tribute to Simon? What’s On: So Long, Simon

I admit that amid my excitement for the American Idol finale (which does exist in spite of season nine’s stank), I’ve forgotten to be sad for Simon Cowell’s departure. I know X-Factor is coming, but a part of my TV-viewing life is morphing forever. Change is not my strong suit. Paula Abdul’s reappearance tonight will soften the blow somewhat, but I’m not prepared for Simon’s inevitable bawling. And by “bawling,” I mean “cheeky quips that create tension between Kara and Paula, probably forever.”

American Idol Finale, Part 1: Who’s Our Idol?

Crystal Bowersox or Lee DeWyze: Only one can run off with Idol ‘s platinum crown and inherit the kingdom of Tiger Beat sorcerer Kris Allen. The other is forced into an underground burlesque ring with Diana DeGarmo and Bo Bice, who don’t share tips. The stakes are high! Last night we watched as Crystal and Lee tackled three different selections, some old, some new. As expected, there was enough acoustic flair to revive MTV Unplugged for years — but the real question is, who reigned with the best performance of the night? Tonight we find out what voters think, but in the meantime, we’re ranking the night’s performances from worst to first, stopping only if Simon Cowell tears up during his last judging moments on the Idol stage. (Spoiler: He’s an unfeeling warlock.)

Simon Cowell Picks Lee DeWyze To Win ‘American Idol’

‘He hasn’t had any real breaks in his life, and this has given him a shot,’ he says on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show. By Kara Warner Lee Dewyze on “American Idol” Photo: Fox For those who place their “American Idol” winner bets based on the wisdom of cantankerous judge Simon Cowell, let it be known that the cagey Brit has placed his odds on late-season favorite Lee DeWyze. “If you’d asked me five or six weeks ago, 100 percent, I would have said Crystal [Bowersox],” Cowell admitted to his fellow judge, Ellen DeGeneres, when he stopped by her talk show Tuesday (May 25). “But now I’ve changed my mind. I think Lee’s going to win.” Ellen emphasized to her audience that the judges have no say in the outcome but pressed Cowell as to why he thinks DeWyze now has a chance to win this season’s “American Idol” crown. “I think, ” he emphasized. “But you know what? The last two years, I’ve got it completely and utterly wrong. I don’t think anyone’s listening to me anymore. It’s just a hunch. There’s something about him, the fact that he’s worked in a paint shop, he’s talented. He hasn’t had any real breaks in his life, and this has given him a shot. I like that.” Cowell and DeGeneres also talked about their friendship and how they’ll miss working together. “Who knew I’d like you so much?” DeGeneres joked about her pre-“Idol” impressions of Cowell. “[I’m] sad that you’re leaving.” “I’m feeling a bit sad now, because we’re nearly there [at the end],” Cowell said. “But at the same time, do you remember the last three weeks of school when you couldn’t wait to get out? It’s a little bit like that.” Are you sad to see Simon leave “Idol”? Do you agree that DeWyze will take home the title? Let us know in the comments!
