‘His hairstyle has really kind of captured the imagination,’ he tells MTV News of Biebs. By James Montgomery Gorillaz’s Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett Photo: MTV News As if his rubber-duck-and-swimming-pool rant against Simon Cowell wasn’t already proof of this point, please know that Damon Albarn — one-half of the brain trust behind Gorillaz — isn’t exactly afraid to voice his displeasure about the current state of pop music. On Thursday, Albarn and artist Jamie Hewlett came by the MTV Newsroom to talk about the success of Gorillaz’s third album, Plastic Beach, and, inevitably, the conversation shifted to the group’s pop contemporaries, be they Cowell or Lady Gaga and Beyonc

Last night, American Idol battered us with selections from its most syrupy set list yet: Inspirational Songs. Run, Bowersox! Rod Stewart wouldn’t touch half of this nonsense in a “Great American Songbook” package, and lord, that says it all. Still, we got seven performances, seven consultations with the catatonic Alicia Keys, and one obvious winner. Our rankings and video after the jump.

American Idol ‘s current season of contestants is spottier than a D.I.Y. dye-job., but the judging panel isn’t exactly a cohesive powerhouse either. Between Randy Jackson, Ellen DeGeneres, and Simon Cowell, critiques have been vague, pandering, and suspiciously biased , respectively. Meanwhile, Kara DioGuardi has improved from her first season, now ably diagnosing issues with song choices and artistic intention. Could the withering backlash against her have had more to do with her sometimes-cloying way of addressing the contestants than with her views themselves? Here are three advantages Kara has over her fellow judges:

Ryan Seacrest and judges visit ‘Larry King Live’ to promote ‘Idol Gives Back.’ By Gil Kaufman Simon Cowell Photo: Getty Images Simon Cowell has not publicly talked very much about his feelings on leaving “American Idol” at the end of the current season. But on Monday night’s “Larry King Live,” where the judges and Ryan Seacrest were promoting this week’s “Idol” season full of more on-screen tension than ever before, Cowell said that most of the testy back-and-forth between himself and Seacrest is a put on and that they are friendly in real life. “No, we get on fine,” he said. “It’s right that it’s sport.” Ellen DeGeneres also denied any real tension between the men, saying they were more like battling siblings. “They really are like brothers,” she said. “I think that Ryan likes to see what he can do to push Simon’s buttons. And Simon likes to see what he can do to push Ryan’s buttons. And they do it to each other. That’s just the way they play.” Asked how her first season was going, DeGeneres said she was having fun, but that the gig has been harder than she expected. “It’s really hard,” she said. “It’s easy to sit at home and have opinions, but when those kids are waiting for you to tell them how they sounded and — and, you know, sometimes I hear myself go, ‘I liked it,’ and then Simon is going, ‘No, you didn’t,’ you know.” Seacrest confirmed that he’d just signed a new contract that will keep him on the show for two more seasons, while DeGeneres said she’s got a five-year deal and both Jackson and DioGuardi have at least two more years on their current contracts. Earlier in the show, Seacrest told King that “Idol Gives Back” has raised more than $140 million to date for different child-related and anti-malaria charities, and all the judges discussed their travels to visit various organizations for Wednesday night’s two-hour fundraiser/elimination show. After taking a year off due to the financial crisis, the third edition of the all-star show will feature Justin Bieber, Elton John, Alicia Keys, Carrie Underwood and the Black Eyed Peas. Simon Cowell has said he is no longer Mr. Nasty after meeting the girl of his dreams. Cowell, 50, recently got engaged to make-up artist Mezhgan Hussainy , 36, and said his fiancee is the reason he has mellowed with contestants on The X-Factor when speaking to UK newspaper Daily Mirror . “Yes, good and bad moods affect my judging. I am in a very good mood at the moment, and life with Mezhgan is great. Mr Nasty was just a label when we first started doing these shows. You have to remember when people are auditioning, they are taking it very seriously and for them it is a life-changing moment., I am not a hypocrite and I always said I would be honest as I possibly could. But you have to kinda put yourself in their shoes, and if you have woken up in a bad mood, you have to shake yourself out of it.”

Can you imagine an American Idol season even weaker than the current one? You would have had just that, if it weren’t for your guardian angel Ryan Seacrest. TMZ reports that dreadlocked Idol frontrunner Crystal Bowersox was thisclose to quitting the competition two weeks ago, until Seacrest convinced her to stick in it so that she could buy her mother a house someday. Meanwhile, a blithe Simon Cowell was like, “Eh, do what you want .” [ TMZ ]

American Idol got a much-needed shot of adrenaline and entertainment this week, when Adam Lambert returned to the stage that made him famous. But ratings for season nine have plummeted, along with its enterainment value and overall talent level (no offense, Crystal Bowersox ). Especially because it will be competing with Simon Cowell’s The X Factor next year, the series needs to do something, it needs some kind of savior, it needs… Paula Abdul? Sources tell the latest issue of In Touch Weekly that “it’s a huge secret, but American Idol producers might be trying to woo Paula Abdul back to the struggling show.” Compared to when Paula was on the panel, viewership has fallen by approximately six million this season. That may have a lot to do with a lackluster set of finalists, of course, most of whom are the same type of singer. But with Simon departing, “they want Paula back,” an insider tells the tabloid. “They’re not sure if she’d be the fifth judge, but they are talking to her. People tuned in to see Paula’s wacky antics and her chemistry with Simon. The show is just not as much fun to watch without her.” Do you agree? Do you wanna see Abdul return to Idol?
