Playing in Toronto last week, Paul Simon did something, well, awesome. A fan asks him to play “Duncan,” his 1972 classic, and lets him know that she learned to play guitar to that song. So Simon agrees. And, even better, he invites her on stage to take over guitar and vocals. Nervous, almost hyperventilating, she A Paul Simon Feel-Very-Good Moment is a post from: Open Culture . Read more:

Last month, L.A. Reid announced his departure as chairman of Island Def Jam Records to secure a judging gig for the U.S. edition of Simon Cowell’s reality singing competition ‘The X Factor,’ which is scheduled to premiere in September. Maybe the letters from Nas and Shyne finally got to him but Reid will now be searching for new talent instead of managing the demands of current acts. The BoomBox.com caught up with Reid to find out why he left behind a gig behind a desk to wade through scores of wannabees looking for their big break. Why did you decide to leave Def Jam to join ‘The X Factor’? L.A. Reid: Well, I decided to do ‘The X Factor’ largely because of Simon Cowell and my admiration for Simon and how he’s developed this show, how he’s developed this format of music television, and how he’s developed his own career. I really admire Simon. When he called me it was a no-brainer because I admire him that much. And the second reason was I love artists and I love music. I love the excitement of entertainment and I love ‘The X Factor’ as a platform to discover the next generation of superstar talent. READ THE FULL INTERVIEW @ TVSQUAD.COM RELATED ARTICLES: L.A. Simon Cowell And L.A. Reid Discuss ‘X Factor’ Rumors

Cowell tells Ryan Seacrest that the TV talent competition’s final two judges may be revealed ‘in the next week.’ By Eric Ditzian Simon Cowell Photo: Ian Derry / FOX Simon Cowell called in to his former “American Idol” buddy Ryan Seacrest’s radio show on Wednesday morning (March 23), and in between zinging each other — Simon, for instance, sarcastically suggesting “Idol” needs more mentions that this year’s talent is the best ever, because 16 times isn’t enough — the duo dished a bit of news about the Brit TV personality’s upcoming reality competition, “The X Factor.” While rumors continue to swirl about who will join Cowell and former Island Def Jam chief L.A. Reid on the judging panel, Simon disclosed that he’s eyeing two hosts for the show, much like “Idol” during its first season. Unlike “Idol,” though, which featured Seacrest and Brian Dunkleman during its inaugural season, “X Factor” is targeting both a male and female host. “I think on this show it would be helpful to have two,” Cowell said. While Cowell had no announcements to make about the other judges that will be joining the panel, he did say news will be coming shortly. “Maybe in the next week we’re going to announce the final two,” he revealed. And what about those Nicki Minaj rumors? When Reid joined the conversation and Seacrest asked about a possible meeting between Reid and Minaj, the ex-label boss playfully stumbled though his words and said any such meeting would have nothing to do with “X Factor.” “We’ve got to find people who we like,” Cowell said about other judges. “You’ve got contracts, you’ve got dates, you change your mind, you meet new people. Literally just today, somebody else’s name has come into the frame. It happens.” Cowell, of course, didn’t mention who that new person was. But, he said, the new judge has got to be someone he trusts, much like Reid, who he’s known personally and professionally for a long time. “Simon and I have been friends for many, many years,” Reid explained. “When I met Simon, I thought he was a huge star, and if he could sing, I would have signed him … One day, Simon reached out to me [about joining ‘X Factor’] and, Simon, your exact words were, ‘Are your ears burning?’ ” Who would you like to see on the ‘X Factor’ judging panel? How Would Simon Cowell Actually Critique the Superstars in the New X Factor Promo?

One interesting aspect of American Idol ‘s legacy is the angst leveled at contestants who haven’t become Billboard smashes. Is Melinda Doolittle less talented than Kelly Clarkson because she didn’t have a Hot 100 hit? I think not. It takes a certain type of skill set to emerge from a talent competition with untarnished durability (and credibility), and frankly, plenty of our singing superstars wouldn’t have made the leap. Let’s take a look at the new promo for Simon Cowell’s X Factor , which touts plenty of stars who have the all-important “It” factor (including Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, and Lady Gaga), and see how Simon would appraise them in a regular audition.
