Lady Gaga And Laurieann Gibson: The Way They Were

After meeting in 2007, creative director went on to put her stamp on many of the pop superstar’s most memorable creations. By Jocelyn Vena Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images On Monday (November 14), Lady Gaga and Laurieann Gibson confirmed their split, ending a creative partnership that dated back to the beginning of the pop star’s career. Gibson first teamed up with Mother Monster in 2007 , when the choreographer helped her most famous Dream Warrior with a live routine for her Fame track “Boys Boys Boys.” The two ladies shared a similar background, both drawing inspiration from the singer’s hometown of New York City, where Gaibson had arrived many years before meeting Gaga, hoping to make it as a dancer. In August, Gibson explained to MTV News that Gaga’s Nick Knight-directed “Born This Way” video was meant to pay homage to their love for the city. “This was the place that we started. This was the place that birthed her. This was the place that birthed my dance,” Gibson told us. “New York just has something so real about birthing something specific.” In the years since they first hooked up, the two women have forged one of the most close-knit, high-profile relationships in pop. Gibson has had credits on nearly every Lady Gaga video released so far, including “Poker Face,” “Just Dance,” “Telephone,” “Alejandro,” and “Born This Way.” But she has also worked closely with the singer on her live performances and massive stage shows . Among members of Gaga’s elusive Haus of Gaga, Gibson is certainly one of the most public. Over the course of the past 12 months, the former “Fly Girl” rose to prominence thanks to her work as creative director for the superstar, starring in not one, but two, of her own reality shows: E!’s “The Dance Scene” and BET’s “Born to Dance.” And it was during this time that the duo showed the world what they could do as a pair, producing some of Gaga’s most talked-about creations, including the clips from the Born This Way album, which was released in May. “I woke up one night and I got it and I said, ‘I got it: We have to birth a new race ,’ ” she recalled to MTV News about the idea for the “BTW” clip. “As genius as [Gaga] is, she then begins to create all of these elements that make her Lady Gaga. When I saw the final edit, I, of course, was loving some stuff and then I was like, ‘But oh, here we go.’ It was brilliant. Nick is amazing.” While Gibson was outspoken when she disagreed about a creative decision the singer made, she seemed to be always by her side, working on projects like Gaga’s Google Chrome commercial , which again pays homage to the star’s Big Apple roots. The HBO special “Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour at Madison Square Garden” highlighted Gibson’s work as creative director and earned Gaga five Emmy nominations. Laurieann also co-directed the “Judas” video , which she told us had left her satisfied. “I was able to sit in the director’s seat and fulfill our vision and see it all the way through. So at the end of the day, you saw how amazing she looks — beautiful — she’s dancing again,” Gibson said. “And it’s just great because I was able to produce the next level: who she is, how many levels she can go and the idea that this artist is a real artist and capable.” Gibson was also onboard for the “Yo

Amy Winehouse ‘Didn’t Record Like 2Pac’

So don’t expect never-ending posthumous albums, producer Salaam Remi tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Amy Winehouse Photo: MTV News Thanks to the upcoming posthumous album Lioness: Hidden Treasures, fans will be able to hear a collection of new Amy Winehouse material, but beyond that, the public shouldn’t expect a ton of unheard material. That’s just not the way Winehouse recorded, friend and producer Salaam Remi told MTV News during a November 4 interview in New York’s Jungle Studios. “She didn’t record like 2Pac, so that’s not the case,” Remi told MTV News of Winehouse. “There are definitely things that people hadn’t heard that have been recorded, but they’re in different modes in different forms. But she wasn’t a recorder like that.” One such song is “Like Smoke,” the singer’s collaboration with Nas, which was completed after she died in July . “Amy sang on records that we never put out with Nas,” Remi said. “As far as them now getting on the same record, that was a conversation in play for the last couple of years but that just didn’t happen yet. And when I listened to that song, I was like, ‘You know what? This makes sense,’ to actually make that happen as far as things that she wants to do that didn’t happen yet.” According to Remi, Winehouse didn’t record just for the sake of recording. “She’d just do one take of a song, she’d write it and then she’d go sing it. Back to Black was a short album in comparison; it was like 37 minutes,” Remi said of Winehouse’s 2007 breakout album. “[She was like,] ‘This is what I’m writing, this is what you get, underline, bye.’ ” Still, the producer said there is some material waiting in the wings. “It’s not that type of recording process, but there are definitely a lot of things that people haven’t heard before or weren’t aware of,” he said. Lady Gaga Cuts Ties With Laurieann Gibson

Gibson had been Gaga’s creative director for several years. By Gil Kaufman Lady Gaga Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage After a long and fruitful creative partnership, Lady Gaga has broken ties with creative director Laurieann Gibson. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the split, which came after reports that the two women had a serious falling out. Gibson has been part of Gaga’s inner circle since well before the singer became an international superstar, beginning with the choreography for the 2008 “Beautiful, Dirty, Rich” video and continuing through the soon-to-be famous steps in clips for “Just Dance,” “Poker Face,” “Love Game,” “Paparazzi” and “Bad Romance.” The pair were closely associated throughout Gaga’s rise to fame, with Gibson providing the choreography and artistic input on such landmark videos as “Telephone,” “Alejandro” and “Born This Way.” Gibson, who previously appeared on MTV’s “Making the Band” with Diddy and the “Starmaker” reality show, has been stepping out on her own lately, including a starring role in the BET dance competition show “Born to Dance” and another dance reality series, E!’s “The Dance Scene.” Gibson also co-directed the Gaga videos for ” Judas ” and “You and I,” (http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1669175/lady-gaga-laurieann-gibson-you-and-i-video.jhtml) but the women reportedly clashed on the set of the former, with Gibson expressing discomfort with the religious imagery in the clip. According to the Reporter, the tension was already showing during the filming of the “Judas” video, during which Gibson told the magazine, “At one point, there was two completely different views and after the third glass of wine, I was like, ‘Listen, I don’t want lightning to strike me. I believe in the Gospel and I’m not going there.” She was less adamant when talking to MTV News about the controversy, expressing pride in the final product. “I think the concept stuck with this one because, ultimately, there was a place where we wanted to leave the interpretation up to each individual and not take away [Gaga’s] power as a performer, as a dancer, as a star,” Gibson explained, alluding to the creative clashes the pair had about the “Born This Way” video. “And to leave the moments for you to interpret and be inspired by the fact that everyone has a Judas in their life and that there is a place of deliverance. For me, I interpret differently than her, and for someone else, they’ll interpret it differently.” A spokesperson for Gaga could not be reached for confirmation on the split at press time. Gibson also spoke out after she and Gaga failed to see eye-to-eye on the concept for the ” Edge of Glory ” video. After reports that video vet Joseph Kahn would be directing, Gaga instead went for a simpler cityscape treatment that drew some fire from fans. “Listen u disrespectful f–k they had an issue on set I don’t lie!!!!!”, Gibson tweeted at the time . “Creative Changes happen always educate ignorant Monster’s!!!” The Reporter noted that relations between the two continued to fray this summer over disagreements about the “You and I” video and Gaga seemed to confirm the end with a November 6 tweet in which she announced that Gibson’s former #2, Richard Jackson, is her new choreographer. Katy Perry Would ‘Love To Have Children’ With Russell Brand

‘If it doesn’t hurt the first time, I’ll keep popping them out,’ singer tells Ellen DeGeneres. By James Montgomery Katy Perry and Russell Brand Photo: Dave J Hogan/Getty Images Katy Perry and Russell Brand celebrated their one-year wedding anniversary last month, and now Perry is talking about starting a family … eventually. During her appearance on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” which airs Friday (November 11), Perry was asked whether she and Brand have been making baby plans (you know, when she’s not out on her unending California Dreams Tour), and she answered that yes, they’ve discussed it, but that’s about as far as things have gone. “I would love to have children. I think that’s one of the reasons you get married, and especially to the person that you marry. You think, Hmmm, that person is going to be a good partner, a good parent,” Perry told DeGeneres. “But I’m not sure it’s yet. We’ll see, you know?” DeGeneres asked whether Perry wanted to have more than one baby, to which the singer replied, “If it doesn’t hurt the first time, I’ll keep popping them out.” “Word around town is it hurts ,” DeGeneres joked. “But people keep doing it anyway — they don’t care.” Perry also talked about how she and Brand manage their busy schedules, saying they have a self-imposed two-week limit on time apart. “I saw him yesterday,” she said. “[It had been] two weeks, that’s the longest we ever go. Anything longer than that is not fun.” The couple were married on October 23, 2010, in a “private and spiritual ceremony” in India, one that not surprisingly received more than its fair share of tabloid coverage. A few weeks after the wedding, Perry told MTV News that she found all the rumors and speculation to be quite amusing, and added that she was “too busy getting married” to keep up with all the coverage. “I don’t mind my wedding has turned into kind of a myth. It’s kind of cool,” she said. “We kept it kind of private, so when we heard some of the things that were going around we were like, ‘Ah, that’s hilarious.” Related Artists Katy Perry

Rihanna Breaks Down ‘Addictive’ Single ‘You Da One’

‘I kind of just wanted to scale back, instead of having a look,’ singer tells Ryan Seacrest of theme for November 21’s Talk That Talk. By Jocelyn Vena Rihanna Photo: Troy Rizzo/ Getty Images On Friday (November 11), Rihanna officially dropped the second single off her November 21 album, Talk That Talk, and “You da One” is as party-ready as the first single, “We Found Love.” Produced by super producer Dr. Luke, “You da One” is a fist-pumping ode to the power of love, and that’s what attracted Rihanna to it. “This is one of those records, it becomes very addictive,” she told Ryan Seacrest on his KIIS FM radio show on Friday morning. “To me, it’s very infectious: the more you listen to it, the more you want to listen to it. It had a reggae vibe, but it’s a sweet little love letter. I love the record. It’s kind of dirty, I love it.” Rihanna also explained the theme for her highly anticipated album release, mirroring comments her “We Found Love” director Melina Matsoukas recently shared with MTV News about “how being really natural is forward-thinking” “I kind of just wanted to scale back, instead of having a look,” the singer said of Talk That Talk. “I didn’t want to make it such a big deal, like what hair color. I wanted to go back to something simple, something flexible; something a little more natural. It’s more about the music. I don’t want to become a gimmick ever,” she added, before joking, “Well, I ran out of colors so I decided to go back to my natural color!” Early reaction to the sexy party album has been overwhelmingly positive, and the singer appreciates all of the love. “I’m so excited it’s done. I feel so great,” she said. “The snippets came out yesterday and people are really reacting. I know the songs that I love, and to see people react to them the same way that I do … I got excited like I never heard it.” Share your thoughts so far on Talk That Talk in the comments or on our Facebook page!
