James Ward blames All England Club for Wimbledon absence

• Ward loses in straight sets to Alexandr Dolgopolov • Elena Baltacha loses to Sam Stosur at Eastbourne Everton Gayle and Tim Henman has called on British players to start taking more responsibility for themselves. The retired player is frustrated there are no English men in the singles draw at Wimbledon next week and is peeved in particular at Alex Bogdanovic, who has complained he has not had enough support from the Lawn Tennis Association. “When are players going to take more responsibility for themselves? asked the former British No1. “You’re always hearing complaints about lack of funding, demanding to have a new coach or the parents complaining about something. Ultimately it comes down to the player. I know Boggo, he’s a nice lad and has lots of talent but he needs to look at himself in the mirror and ask if he deserves more funding. He’s 26 and after all he’s had, he really shouldn’t be getting any more. “The LTA get a lot things wrong but too often they get blamed for everything,”he added. “I have a problem with a lot of the players, and with the parents. All I ever hear from the players is, ‘I didn’t get this, I didn’t get that, my funding has been cut from X to Y.’ It’s ridiculous. There’s too much of this sense of entitlement. “Part of the problem is that the players get given too much and I find that disappointing. It’s got to be about the individuals, they’ve got to go out and make this happen and do it themselves,” James Ward lost in straight sets to Alexandr Dolgopolov to complete a disappointing day for the two remaining Britons at the Aegon International, after the women’s British No1, Elena Baltacha, was defeated in three sets by Sam Stosur. Ward then stated his frustration with the All England Club for not offering him a wild card into next week’s Wimbledon. Speaking after his 6-3, 6-4 defeat by Dolgopolov, the Ukrainain ranked 47th in the world, Ward said of his absence: “It’s very frustrating [with] obviously beating two good guys here [Feliciano López and Rainer Schüttler] who are going to go on and do very well at Wimbledon in the next two weeks. But it’s not in my control.”Yesterday Leon Smith, the LTA’s head of player development, acknowledged yesterday that it was his organisation’s decision not to propose Ward to the All England Club as a wild card, but Ward said last night that the All England Club was to blame for his absence. “He [Smith] explained a little bit,” said Ward. “I don’t think it’s up to the LTA, it’s up to the All England club itself. I think the LTA wanted me to play but the All England club make their own decisions. He [Smith] certainly would have wanted me involved like he would have wanted a lot of other players involved as well.” Asked if he was disappointed that the All England Club was not supporting English players, Ward said: “Yes it’s disappointing. They offered me a wild card into the qualifying which is great. But I picked this tournament because of the chance of playing good players in a top 250 event and get some good ranking points, which I’ve got and will get my ranking up for the rest of the year.” Baltacha, meanwhile, said of her defeat to Stosur: “She was just too good, she kept serving bombs, kept mixing it up, with great variety. She was taking swings and hitting winners and was too good for me today.” Stosur was the losing finalist in this month’s French Open and Baltacha said that the world No7 is continuing that form. “She was on a roll – there’s a reason why she made the finals of Paris, she’s a very good player.I knew I’d have to perform unbelievable.” Kim Clijsters, the US Open Champion, lost in straight sets to Victoria Azarenka.” Tennis Jamie Jackson guardian.co.uk

Christina Aguilera’s Bionic Will Settle Gaga Debate, Songwriter Says

‘Once the album comes out … I don’t think the comparisons will last,’ says Claude Kelly. By Jocelyn Vena Christina Aguilera’s Bionic Photo: RCA Fans have already gotten a pretty good taste of what they can expect from Christina Aguilera ‘s upcoming album, Bionic, out June 8. In addition to the singles “Woohoo” and “Not Myself Tonight,” other tracks from the disc have leaked online. Despite rumors that worries about the album’s success are what prompted Aguilera to postpone her summer tour to 2011, songwriter Claude Kelly said it will be the album of the summer. “I’m excited about Christina,” Kelly told MTV News at the “Sex and the City 2” premiere, where he also dished about working with Leona Lewis and Jennifer Hudson on their track for the flick. Kelly said that he enjoyed hitting the studio with Aguilera to cook up some choice tunes for the release. “I did ‘Woohoo,’ which is the single out now,” he shared about the track that also features Nicki Minaj. “I did ‘Glam, which is kind of like futuristic, kind of an homage to ‘Vogue’ by Madonna. [I did] a song called ‘Vanity.’ [I did one called] ‘I Hate Boys.’ She has a fun record coming out.” Aguilera’s look during TV appearances and videos of late has led some Lady Gaga fans to accuse Christina of biting Gaga’s style . Kelly said the two pop queens couldn’t be more different. “I will say that there’s room for everybody,” he said. “I also know Gaga as well. She’s incredible. They really are honestly two different powerhouses. Once the album comes out and they hear what Christina’s doing, I don’t think the comparisons will last. But, I mean, at the end of the day, they’re both amazing women.” Are you looking forward to Christina’s new album? Tell us in the comments! Katy Perry’s Evolution: Teen Church Singer To Teenage Dream

The 2010 MTV Movie Awards performer has come a long way since her Nashville days. By James Montgomery Katy Perry Photo: John Parra/ WireImage Katy Perry’s journey to the top of the pop world actually began in a far different place: Nashville, Tennessee. The daughter of pastors, she spent her early years singing in churches, then went to Music City as a fresh-faced 15-year-old looking to score a record deal. In the years that followed, it’s been a pretty amazing ride, one that doesn’t show signs of slowing down anytime soon. On August 24, she’ll release the follow-up to One of the Boys, Teenage Dream, and she’s already got a brand-new single — the beach-ready “California Gurls” — that’s burning its way up the charts. She’s also just been confirmed as a performer at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . It’s looking like 2010 is going to be a very big year for Perry. So, before things get too hectic, we figured now would be a good time to take a look back at just how far Perry’s come. In her own words, here’s how she evolved from gospel-singing teen to chart-dominating, girl-kissing pop sensation. From California to Nashville (And Back Again) Born in Santa Barbara, California, Perry headed to Nashville in early 2000 with dreams of landing a recording contract. “When I was 14 or 15, I started going to Nashville, Tennessee, to start recording gospel songs and be around amazing country music veterans and learn how to craft a song and play guitar,” Perry said. “I have definitely grown up and changed a lot.” After failing to make an impact in Nashville, she changed her last name from Hudson to Perry, moved back to her native California and teamed up with famed producer Glen Ballard, eventually scoring a deal with Island Records. Perry got to work recording an album that, as it turned out, would never see the light of day. But the fire had clearly been lit. For the next seven years, she’d grind it out, bouncing between labels and writing partners, making cameos in music videos and, finally, hitting it big in 2008 with “I Kissed a Girl,” the first official single from her One of the Boys album. And the rest, as they say, was history. “I came from Santa Barbara to Los Angeles. With a wonderful producer named Glen Ballard, who brought me out here and kinda looked out for me for three years,” she explained. “After being signed and dropped, signed and dropped, signed and dropped by a couple different record labels whose names I will withhold, Capital Records picked me up.” Kissing a Girl (And Liking It) As she said, Perry spent most of the mid-2000s bouncing between labels and teaming with a host of top-notch songwriters. In 2007, she finally found a home at Capitol Records and began working with the team of Dr. Luke and Max Martin, who helped her craft what would become her breakout hit: “I Kissed a Girl,” a tune that topped the Billboard Hot 100 for seven straight weeks and, in the process, turned Perry into a bona fide pop sensation. Other singles followed, and they were hits too, but Perry wasn’t content to rest on her laurels. Instead, she began looking toward the next phase of her career … not surprising for a girl who had worked so hard to get to this point. “For me in this past year and a half, I think some people have an idea of who I am or a little piece of the cake, but I get to show off,” she said. “I am really excited to be ever evolving and changing with my look, my music. It keeps me entertained as well. The next record will be very pop.” A California Gurl With Teenage Dreams Perry spent a good chunk of 2009 working on the follow-up to One of the Boys, teaming up once again with Dr. Luke and Max Martin. Teenage Dream is inspired by Ace of Base and roller-skating jams, Perry said, and the first single is a triumphant slice of summertime pop called “California Gurls,” an ode to her past and her future. “It’s so exciting [the album] is coming out this summer. It’s a summer record. It’s what I said I wanted earlier. I finally got it. We nailed it,” Perry beamed. “There might be some really cool guest’s appearance. Some rappers from the West Coast, since I am a California girl, you know.” So, with an almost certain second smash on her hands — not to mention a very high-profile wedding to comedian Russell Brand looming on the horizon — where does Perry go from here? Even she’s not sure just yet. But she knows that whatever she does, it’ll be big. “I feel like bit of a volcano,” she said. “I’m ready to explode with all of these new songs. I have a different perspective, and I changed a lot.” What would you say is the highlight of Katy Perry’s career so far? Share your thoughts in the comments. Ludacris And Plies To Play Atlanta’s Birthday Bash

More performers will be announced for the 107.9 concert in the coming weeks. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Rahman Dukes Ludacris Photo: Jerritt Clark/ Getty Images Atlanta’s 107.9 has an extra-special birthday in 2010. This year, the radio station celebrates its 15th anniversary, and you already know what the celebration will be: the annual summer Birthday Bash concert. On Thursday evening (April 22), 107.9 announced its first two performers for the June 19 concert at the Philips Arena. First up on the roster will be the always combustible Ludacris. Before Luda embarked on the road to superstardom, he was a personality on the station in the late ’90s. The other name 107.9 announced today should come as no surprise, but fans will love the news nonetheless: Plies. The Florida native is becoming a staple of the concert. He’s had two highly touted performances the last couple of years. A testament to Plies’ potency as an MC is when his album cuts are sung word for word at the Birthday Bash, just like his singles. “The game is a tricky situation,” Plies said about the success of his non-singles. “From what we really stand for and what we’re trying to get across, from a company standpoint, we don’t stand a chance on radio with those records. A lot of times, people don’t understand the impact of the structure of radio. If I could put ‘Old Lady’ on the radio, I’d love to have it on the radio. A lot of times, it’s about trying to balance your situation but understanding your situation at the same time.” Last year, the Birthday Bash show-stealer was Young Jeezy , who brought out Lil Wayne and Mary J. Blige. Rick Ross, Fabolous, Gucci Mane, Trey Songz, Keri Hilson, Soulja Boy Tell’em and the Grand Hustle family also hit the stage. In 2008, Jeezy also had the most talked-about set , bringing out Kanye West, The-Dream and Usher. Stay tuned to MTVNews.com in the coming weeks for more performers who will appear at this year’s Bash. Who would you like to see perform at this year’s Birthday Bash? Let us know in the comments! LMFAO Say ‘Partying Is Universal’ At Winter Music Conference

Duo join Will.I.Am, Major Lazer, Nas and more in Miami. By Akshay Bhansali LMFAO Photo: MTV News LMFAO, Will.I.Am, Nas and Damien Marley, David Guetta, Major Lazer and A-Trak are among the artists performing at this year’s Winter Music Conference in Miami. The WMC has been the most important electronic music festival in the U.S. for the past 25 years. Typically it has been a place where names like Paul Van Dyk, Armin van Buuren and DJ Tiesto have held court, spinning four- to six-hour sets for their fans. However, a few now-household names first got their start at past WMCs. Back in 2008, a then relatively unknown artist graced the stage of the Armani Exchange Pool Party at the Raleigh Hotel — Stefani Germanotta, otherwise known as Lady Gaga. LMFAO also have the WMC to thank for bringing their music national attention. In their first interview with MTV News in April of last year, just a month after their performance at the Conference, they explained how fast their music caught on. “Before we ever went to Miami, we made the song called ‘I’m in Miami Trick,’ ” Sky Blu explained. “We went to a place called the Clevelander — they played our song and by the second chorus people were singing along with the song like they already knew it. And this had never been played in a club. It had never been played outside of the speakers at our house.” The single would go on to peak at #51 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and since then the guys in LMFAO have released the singles “La La La” and “Shots,” joined the Black Eyed Peas on tour and even managed to get into a Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta bizarre skirmish with Mitt Romney. But it was at the Winter Music Conference where the two first felt a sense that they were onto something. “We are at the Winter Music Conference,” Redfoo said. “Where travelers and DJs from all over the world are coming. People were singing our song that didn’t even speak English — because partying is universal.” LMFAO are planning to do it all again, only this time on a much bigger scale — he guys will be taking the WMC stage for the Ultra Music Festival. The UMF at Winter Music Conference will also feature the likes of Will.I.Am, A-Trak, Major Lazer, Swedish House Mafia, Deadmau5, David Guetta, Armin van Buuren, Passion Pit and many more. Jennifer Lopez Parts Ways With Sony Records

With the release of her new album up in the air, the singer/actress is set to host ‘Saturday Night Live’ this weekend. By Gil Kaufman Jennifer Lopez Photo: MTV News Jennifer Lopez is scheduled to be the host and musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, but unlike most host/guests, at the moment Jenny from the Block doesn’t seem to have much to promote during her appearance. That’s because, according to Entertainment Weekly , the singer has split with longtime record label Sony Music’s Epic Records, which was slated to release her delayed seventh album, Love? , in April. After taking time off to become a mother of twins with husband Marc Anthony, Lopez was working on her comeback album, releasing the shoe fetish song “Louboutins” last year. She famously wiped out while lip-synching that tune at November’s American Music Awards , but when the song fizzled on the charts, failing to crack the top 10 on the singles tally, the heat on the project apparently cooled off. “Jennifer had a wonderful relationship with the Sony Music Group, and they have shared many successes together, but the time was right to make a change that best serves the direction of her career as an actress and recording artist. She is grateful and appreciative to everyone at Sony for all that they accomplished together,” the singer’s manager, Benny Medina, said in a statement Monday. Her rep told EW that Lopez is already negotiating with another record label. A Sony spokesperson could not be reached for comment at press time. The story broke on Monday on the Deadline Hollywood blog, where it was reported that Lopez’s contract had ended and that she’d fulfilled it with “Louboutins” and another recent single, “Fresh Out the Oven,” which leaked online in October. The report also stated that it’s unclear if Lopez was finished with the album, which reportedly features the Neptunes, Danja, Jim Jonsin and Rodney Jerkins. Unnamed Lopez “insiders” said the album was “by no means done” and that she had only finished a few songs for it. Lopez is slated to return to the big screen in late April in the romantic comedy “The Back-Up Plan.” Related Artists Jennifer Lopez

MGMT’s Congratulations: Fuzz, Dancing And Russian Surfing In 2010

The group returns with a new album this year, but without any single releases. By Kyle Anderson MGMT Photo: Sony/Columbia It’s hard to believe that Oracular Spectacular, the breakout album from Brooklyn psychedelic dance duo MGMT , originally came out way back in 2007, simply because it still remains inescapable today. Andrew Van Wyngarden and Ben Goldwasser have spent the past few years riding the wave of their infectious, fuzzy grooves to platinum success, and the irresistibility of the smash singles “Time to Pretend” and “Kids” has brought them major spots on high-profile festivals, a pair of Grammy nominations and praise from bloggers and soccer moms alike.
