Rapper says the clip is done and should drop next week. By John Mitchell Nicki Minaj Photo: Getty Images Apparently, getting it just right is more important than keeping it especially timely. Nicki Minaj ‘s smash single “Starships” has been burning up the Billboard Hot 100 for nine weeks now, peaking at #5 a few weeks back and currently holding it down at #7. The pop-dance track was the official lead single (“Roman Holiday” and “Stupid Hoe” were promo singles) from her new album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, which debuted at #1 two weeks back. All of which makes the fact that there’s been no official video release for the buzz-heavy track seem all the more glaring. Heck, she’s already released the video for “Beez in the Trap,” technically the album’s third single after “Starships” and “Right by My Side” featuring Chris Brown. So when will we finally see the “Starships” video? Pretty soon, according to Minaj. “It’s officially done,” Nicki told the U.K.’s Capital FM . “There was just one tiny little thing I wanted to change, but I know at the beginning of next week you guys will see it.” But watch out, Nicki warns: “It may be too saucy for TV.” Pictures of the rap/pop superstar hard at work on the clip surfaced in mid-March, showing Nicki looking amazing while sporting green hair and a pink bikini as she filmed in an exotic location. At the time, Minaj told MTV News that seeing girls sporting her unique style has been an exciting byproduct of her fame. “I guess I am pop culture, just because what I’m doing seems to be popular. When people want to do what you’re doing, it’s kinda popular,” she said. “I don’t ask girls to wear pink hair; they just do it. It’s not about black or white; I think it’s just a statement. It doesn’t matter which color you are; it’s just a statement of being fearless.” What are you expecting from Nicki’s “Starships” video? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Nicki Minaj
The boy band will premiere the full video tonight at 7:53 ET during ‘MTV First: The Wanted.’ By Christina Garibaldi The Wanted’s “Chasing the Sun” music video Photo: Universal Music Group The Wanted are set to premiere their much-anticipated video for their second U.S. single, “Chasing the Sun,” tonight on MTV. And before the British boy band introduce the full clip and answer fans’ questions, they gave us a little teaser. In the 30-second clip, the fivesome travel the streets of Los Angeles in the middle of the night, with a pack of girls clinging to each of the boys. Intercut with shots of the band on a rooftop singing the chorus of the track, it seems as if the group is literally chasing the sun. Coming up to a gated door, member Tom Parker flashes what looks to be a sun tattoo on his hand, and the guard lets him pass into the sunlight. Not much of the plot is given away in this clip, but when we caught up with the group on the set of the video earlier this month, they teased to their fans what they can expect. “Our song ‘Chasing the Sun’ is basically about the party that keeps on going,” Jay McGuiness said, with pal Max George giving a bit more insight into how that will manifest in the clip: “There’s certain shots which we’ve just done now which are on a rooftop, and then we’re filming all night until 6 in the morning, and then the last shot, I think, will be us just kind of walking away looking rather disheveled,” George explained. This is the third video of the Wanted’s that has been helmed by Director X, who previously worked on the video for their smash single, “Glad You Came.” “You always want to do better than your last song, and we’ve always set a really high standard with ‘Glad You Came’ already,” McGuiness said. “But I think we know now from the singles we’ve got in our pocket, there’s no way we’re going anywhere. We’re here to stay, and our songs are going to get better and better. I’m just bragging right now so hard.” Well, see if the Wanted live up to their expectations when they down with MTV News’ Sway Calloway tonight at 7:53 ET on MTV during “MTV First: The Wanted.” Immediately following the premiere, the band will stay for an additional 30-minute live Q&A on MTV.com and will be taking fan questions, so make sure you submit them via MTV.com or @MTVNews on Twitter, using the hashtags #MTVFirst or #AskTheWanted. The episode documented the fight taking place in a VIP suite at Gulfstream Park racetrack in Florida, in which Williams says she suffered “serious injuries.”
Twitter, you no longer have Nicki Minaj to kick around. On Sunday, following an exchange with a fansite that leaked one of her singles online, the hip hop star shut down her account with a very simple message: Like seriously, its but so much a person can take. Good f-cking bye.” Minaj had been one of the most popular celebrities on Twitter, amassing more followers than Oprah. With this move, though, she’s only the latest in a long line of stars to at least take a break from that online world. Chris Brown has deleted his account on more than one occasion, while John Mayer, Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato have all dropped out here and there, as well. All eventually returned, however. Will Nicki do the same? Only time, and fan pressure, will tell! [Photo: WENN.com]
The singers are expected to return to the top five next week, the first time they’ve been chart mates in 26 years. By Gil Kaufman Madonna on cover of True Blue and Lionel Richie on cover of Dancing on the Ceiling Photo: Sire/ Motown America was still four years away from the first of three wars in the Middle East, Lady Gaga was a newborn, and the Internet was just a twinkle in the eye of some academic nerds’ coke-bottle glasses. That’s how long it’s been since Madonna and Lionel Richie were both in the top five of the Billboard 200 chart at the same time. The year was 1986, and Richie was riding high with his smash #1 album, Dancing on the Ceiling, while Madge was at #5 with her former #1, True Blue. Next week the pair will be chart mates again, as Madonna’s dance-tastic MDNA is predicted to sell between 300,000 and 350,000 copies to take the top spot, while Richie’s album of country re-workings of his biggest hits, Tuskegee, should land at #2 on sales of 125,000 to 150,000. Back in the day, both were celebrating the release of their third album. Madonna dedicated her “girliest” work to date to her then-husband, actor Sean Penn, even as she began delving into more topical songs (“Papa Don’t Preach”) and Latin rhythms (“La Isla Bonita”). For an artist who’d already ascended to pop stardom with her first two discs, True Blue was a chance for Madonna to expand her fanbase, and though it debuted at #28, it eventually reached #1, where it stayed for five weeks. Among the singles released from the album are “Live to Tell,” the title track and “Open Your Heart.” It went on to sell more than 25 million copies worldwide. For Richie, it was also a time of transition. The former Commodores singer — who was born in Tuskegee, Alabama — had scored some hits on his first two solo albums, including “My Love,” the Caribbean-spiced “All Night Long,” “Hello” and “Running With the Night.” While Madonna continues to be one of the biggest live draws in the world and a global superstar, Dancing on the Ceiling marked the beginning of the end of Richie’s mass popularity. But, the famously well-coiffed singer went out with a huge bang. Not only was the title cut a #1 single and hugely popular video, but the album also spawned the moving ballad “Say You, Say Me,” as well as “Love Will Conquer All” and “Ballerina Girl.” While Madonna continued to crank out hit albums such as Like a Prayer, Erotica and Bedtime Stories, it would be 10 years before Richie was back on the charts. His Louder Than Words came out in April 1996, debuting at #33 and not spawning any memorable hits. Against the usual pop music odds, Madonna is still launching singles onto the charts, recently played the most coveted gig in music — the Super Bowl halftime show — and has collaborated with modern stars like Nicki Minaj. Richie has been lower-profile, but served a well-received stint as a guest mentor on the second-biggest reality music competition on TV, “The Voice,” and he roped in such big-name country stars as Kenny Chesney, Shania Twain, Jason Aldean, Darius Rucker, Rascal Flatts, Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, Blake Shelton, Willie Nelson and old pal Kenny Rogers. After Bastard and Goblin, Odd Future MC tells ‘RapFix Live’ that he doesn’t have a release date for Wolf. By Rob Markman Tyler, the Creator Photo: MTV News Tyler, the Creator made strides when he released his sophomore album, Goblin, last year. Anchored by the singles “Sandwitches” and “Yonkers,” which helped earn the de facto Odd Future leader a VMA, Tyler’s Goblin only raised the expectations for his next solo album, Wolf. If the title track from Tyler’s 2009 debut, Bastard, is any indication, then Wolf will stand as the third album in the MC/producer’s thematic trilogy — maybe. “Dude, I don’t know,” Tyler said on “RapFix Live” when asked about a release date for the LP. Bastard ‘s title track begins with a skit in which fictional therapist Dr. TC tells Tyler he is committed to three sessions. Dr. TC then appears again at the top of Goblin and throughout the album. Tyler says that he didn’t plan for it to be a trilogy; that’s just the way things worked out. “It might not even be a trilogy,” he said.” I might do the third trilogy years from now.” The entire Odd Future collective released The OF Tape, Vol. 2, and after that, they will surely continue to release individual and smaller group projects. Left Brain and Hodgy Beats as MellowHype contribute the rambunctious “50” to Vol. 2, but don’t be surprised if the track ends up on their upcoming Numbers album. “We got some MellowHype jump-offs on the new album that might still go on the new MellowHype album,” Left Brain confirmed. Can you wait a few years for Tyler, the Creator’s Wolf LP? Tell us in the comments! Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ Has An Odd Future Related Artists Tyler, The Creator
British boy band are first U.K. group to have a debut album enter American albums chart in the top spot. That’s just enough to keep fellow Brit Adele at #2 for a second week, as sales of 21 dropped 24 percent to 148,000. Last week’s #1, Bruce Springsteen ‘s Wrecking Ball, dropped by 71 percent to 57,000 as it falls to #4 in its second week. The only other new face in the top 10 is worship band Passion , whose White Flag debuts at #5 on sales of 49,000. Katy Perry is so excited about the prospect of a collaboration with BFF Rihanna , she may have put her foot in her mouth discussing the potential project. Perry weighed in on the forthcoming song (which undoubtedly will be a catchy #1 hit with those two working together), with an apparent dig at Beyonce: “We’ve collaborated on things, just not songs yet. It’s one of those things that’s got so much build-up that we have to deliver,” she said on BBC Radio 1. “I want it to be like that Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin song ‘Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves,’ not ‘Beautiful Liar.’ I definitely want to do something iconic.” Beyonce’s 2007 track ” Beautiful Liar ,” featuring Shakira, isn’t her best song, but it did reach No. 1 on the iTunes best-seller list and U.S. Hot Singles Sales. Perry doesn’t have a reputation for starting beef with other celebs, so we’re guessing she did not mean it as an insult … even if it sort of reads that way. Maybe Bey and Katy can collaborate next and bury the hatchet in this non-feud? In sort of related news, KP sort of embarrassed herself covering “N****s In Paris” by Jay-Z and Kanye West at the same BBC Radio 1 appearance. [Photos: WENN.com]
