T.I. Awards Single Mother With $25K Scholarship

See original here:

A tlanta-bred rapper T.I. tragically lost his sister Precious Harris in February, but he is turning his pain into something positive and ensuring that her legacy is kept alive through the creation of a scholarship fund. According to NBC News T.I.—whose real name is Clifford Harris —recently awarded a college student with $25,000 to put towards her education. Rapper T.I. is keeping the memory of his late sister alive by awarding an Arkansas college student and single mother a $25,000 scholarship. https://t.co/JVbR44KUQL — NBC News (@NBCNews) May 10, 2019 The Precious Chapman Scholarship is a collaborative effort between Harris, the United Negro College Fund, and VH1. Tierani Scott —a college junior who attends Philander Smith College in Arkansas—was awarded with the scholarship during VH1’s Dear Mama: A Love Letter to Mom special. Scott, who is a single mother, exudes excellence academically and in her personal life. She serves as the president of her class, has an outstanding grade point average, and leads a group called Queen Women’s Empowerment Organization all while balancing motherhood. She majors in sociology. Harris said that he wanted to select a recipient who embodied the same values as his late sister. “This year’s recipient is like my beloved sister,” he said. “It is our hope that this scholarship will help her continue on her path to do great things in her future.” Philanthropy is nothing new to Harris. He has continually utilized his platform as an avenue to give back. In April he teamed up with Scrapp Deleon and the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church to bail out non-violent offenders in time for Easter. Earlier this year he was honored by the Georgia Senate for his dedication to bettering the Atlanta community. “So many times, our answer to fixing things is “I’m gonna make some money and leave all these people behind.” There’s rarely an intent to get rich and make where you came from better for generations to come,” he said in an interview with Inc. “It’s extremely ambitious, but I’ve worked myself to a place where I should be the one leading the charge. In my mind, that’s what it means to be king.” SEE ALSO: T.I. Teams Up With Georgia Church To Bail Out Nonviolent Offenders For Easter Georgia Senate Honors T.I. Kurtis Blow’s Surgery Brings Attention To The Health Of Aging Rappers

Read more from the original source:

Source: Johnny Louis/WENN.com / WENN via NewsOne.com : For critics of hip-hop, Nipsey Hussle ’s recent murder was probably emblematic of how rappers are expected to die — young and Black. But while a handful of notable rappers have indeed had their lives cut short at an early age from senseless gun violence, many of the genre’s voices have gone on to grow older without being shot to death. But street life isn’t the only thing threatening the lives of rappers, as shown by hip-hop pioneer Kurtis Blow , who was reportedly set to undergo his second heart procedure. He joined a growing list of other aging rappers who have suffered from health issues. The 59-year-old’s wife released a statement on Monday saying her husband’s aortic artery repair procedure was not as successful as they previously thought and that Kurtis Blow required open heart surgery, HipHopDX reported . Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news.  ( Terms and conditions ). “Kurtis got a bad CT. The aorta has dissected and it looks like he needs to go back to surgery,” a statement from Kurtis Blow’s wife said. “He’s back in ICU and they’re discussing surgery immediately. Emergency open heart surgery.” It was just last week when Kurtis Blow announced in an Instagram post that he was scheduled to undergo a medical procedure on his heart in Los Angeles. He followed that up with a post saying that his surgery was “a tremendous success” before announcing Sunday that he had begun physical therapy yesterday and occupational therapy and was “ on my way to a full recovery 100%.” Hey everyone- I started physical therapy yesterday and occupational therapy today. I am on my way to recovery 100%. Thank you for all of your prayers and well wishes. I love you all and I will be back really… https://t.co/L92VL7b56q — Kurtis Blow (@KurtisBlow1) May 5, 2019 It was unclear what changed in between then and Monday when his wife released her statement. In an Instagram post last week, he said he was “preparing for an aortic artery repair procedure.” It was supposed to “stabilize the artery from further damage caused by the hematoma I contacted from my recent travels to China,” he wrote on May 1. Hematoma has been defined by Merriam-Webster as “a mass of usually clotted blood that forms in a tissue, organ, or body space as a result of a broken blood vessel. Sign Up For Our Newsletter! Email Submit While rap music is a relatively young genre and typically associated with young people, Kurtis Blow’s grave condition was shining a light on the health issues that aging rappers were increasingly facing. The fact that most rappers, especially the pioneers, are Black and brown only exacerbates that reality since statistics show that African Americans are disproportionately affected by chronic health conditions. That was especially true when it comes to the heart. Rapper Craig Mack died last year at the age of 47 from congestive heart failure. Pioneering DJ Lovebug Starski also died last year following a heart attack. He was 57 years old. Hip-hop singer Nate Dogg died in 2011 after suffering a series of strokes in the years leading up to his death. He was 41. Cancer has also targeted rappers. Just last week it was reported that Bushwick Bill of the Geto Boys had been diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, a condition that has all but amounted to a death sentence for Black men in particular. He is 52 years old. GURU of Gang Starr died from cancer in 2010 at the age of 48 and Adam “MCA” Yauch from the Beastie Boys died from cancer in 2012. Phife Dawg from A Tribe Called Quest died from complications from diabetes at the age of 47. Obviously, these ailments don’t only affect rappers, as shown last week’s death of filmmaker John Singleton at the age of 51 following complications from a stroke he had recently suffered. But, like with everybody else, as rappers get older, these health concerns will likely become more pronounced in their lives. Amber Rose Introduced Meagan Good To The Eyebrow Transplant Procedure

Read the original post:

Source: Nagina Lane / iOne Digital Meagan Good’s longtime struggle with her eyebrows isn’t new to us because, like many of us, we’ve gone through it with her. Something as simple as eye browns makes a big difference on your face and if you’ve struggled with scare hair there, you understand why Meagan Good opted for a brow transplant. Following a 90s trend, The Intruder actress began plucking her eyebrows until they eventually stopped growing back. Good then tried tattooing, which worked for a while. But after years of the tattoo method, she noticed over time the lines began to spread. “The lines weren’t as defined,” she revealed. Always seeking the latest eyebrow innovation, she tried microblading. “That was fine too, but as I got older I realized that my face looked a little harsher and more tired when I had them that way.” Leading her to Dr. Champagne, a hair restoration surgeon, who transformed her one tattooed brows into the brows she rocks today. View this post on Instagram My eyebrows are finally coming along after my #EyebrowTransplant ! This has been such an eyebrow evolution journey lol, but finally starting to come full circle Eyebrows like a real little girl . No, but seriously after destroying my eyebrows at age 19, I'm over the moon with these results thus far. Special thanks to my guy, eyebrow specialist @DrJasonChampagne . And thank you to @DrJasonDiamond #Salute ! A post shared by @ meagangood on Apr 17, 2018 at 2:57am PDT Good found out about the procedure through Amber Rose. “I actually saw Amber Rose had got a transplant,” she revealed. “So I researched the doctor. I went and met with him, saw a bunch of before and after pictures I was like, ‘this is life.’” Explaining how it works, she said, “They take out like a small portion of the back of your hair, sew it back up. And then they take that little portion of hair, and it’s kinda like when men are losing their hair, it’s the same thing, put in your brows. But this guy, Dr Champagne is amazing because he specializes in brow shape for your face.” Despite its bloody appearance, Good says it wasn’t painful. “I was like sitting in the surgery and I was like, ‘Let me see what that looks like.’ But he was like, ‘No, I don’t think you should see with it open.’ I was like, ‘Just let me see. And he let me see and and I was like, ‘Oh, this is crazy. This is really cool.” Meagan has seemingly become the brow spokesperson for Dr. Champagne. In an interview with our sister site MadameNoire, Good opened up about her role in The Intruder and being celibate until marrying her husband Devon Franklin. Nipsey Hussle’s Marathon Clothing Store Closes Its Doors

Source: Reagan Elam / Reagan Elam-relam@radio-one.com via NewsOne.com : Nipsey Hussle ‘s beloved Marathon Clothing store has closed its doors in in South Central Los Angeles. However, that does not mean it’s the end of merchandising for the rapper’s legacy. The Marathon Clothing is still fully operational online but its doors were closed this week and there was no word on when it will reopen. There were unconfirmed reports that Marathon Clothing has made $10 million since the rapper’s untimely death. If that was true, coupled with Nipsey Hussle’s estimated net worth of $8 million, his multiple investments that included buying a strip mall likely have his family set up for life. pic.twitter.com/WHnKn9hq1W — Karen Civil (@KarenCivil) May 6, 2019 Hussle was shot and killed outside of the Marathon Clothing store on March 31. The suspect, 29-year-old Eric Holder, was arrested on April 2 in Bellflower, California. He has been charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon. Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news.  ( Terms and conditions ). Herman Douglas, Hussle’s business partner, described his final moments with the rapper early last month. “Me and Nipsey was talking, and the dude that shot him (Eric Holder) , he came and shook our hands,” Douglas told  the Los Angeles Times. Said he was a rapper and this old bulls**t. Shook our hands, the dude went and got his burger. He left.” Douglas also added, “What seems to be a less talented rapper had envy and hate in his eyes. Shortly before his death, he was talking with Steve Soboroff, president of the Los Angeles Police Commission, about how to avoid youth from getting involved in gangs. The Family Of Late Filmmaker John Singleton Is Fighting Over His Will

Source: StarterCAM / StarterCAM / RickeySmileyMorningShow.com via NewsOne.com : It’s been a little more than a week since John Singleton died, but there was already a battle brewing over his fortune. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker and father of seven left a will that was from 1993 when he only had one child. Now the siblings were reportedly preparing for a battle in court. SEE ALSO:  John Singleton Reportedly In Coma After Suffering Stroke Sheila Ward, Singleton’s mother who also handled all of her son’s business affairs, reportedly filed the 1993 will in court. TMZ reported that  “she listed his assets at around $3.8 mil. That means more than $31 million is unaccounted for.” Singleton’s estate was estimated to be worth $35 million. It is possible Singleton had a trust for his kids, which would mean they wouldn’t have to go through a will. As it stands now, under law all of the money would go to his firstborn, Justice. However, another of Singleton’s kids, Cleopatra, reportedly accused Ward of trying to block the children from the estate. TMZ also reported that if Singleton “had died without a will, Sheila would get nothing from his reported $35 million estate, because under California law the assets would be divided equally among his 7 children. But, since there’s a will, John decides who gets what, and who gets nothing. Given the business relationship between John and Sheila, it’s a safe bet she’s the executor of the will, which surely would not please Cleopatra.” Text “RICKEY” to 71007 to join the Rickey Smiley Morning Show mobile club for exclusive news.  ( Terms and conditions ). Cleopatra filed a motion to block her grandmother’s proposed conservatorship and claimed Ward was trying to liquidate all of John’s assets and freeze out his children. TMZ also reported “the kids could file a separate lawsuit if they have beef over the trust or whatever John created to dispose of the $31 mil. A legal fight may not just pit grandma against grandkids … it could also pit some of the kids against the others.” Singleton was hospitalized last month after he suffered a stroke. The family decided to take the 51-year-old off life support on April 17, when he died . Sign Up For Our Newsletter! Close Thank you for subscribing! Email Submit Singleton was reportedly experiencing weakness in his leg after flying back from Costa Rica before he suffered his stroke. The long flight may have triggered the medical emergency. Singleton is known for films like 1991’s “Boyz n the Hood,” which earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. He was the youngest filmmaker to be nominated in those categories. He was also the first African-American to be nominated for Best Director. Rest in power, John Singleton.
