REVIEW: George Clooney, The American Prove They Do Make Movies Like They Used To

Anton Corbijn’s The American looks and feels like a movie made by a filmmaker who hasn’t been to the movies since the ’70s — and I mean that as the highest compliment. This is Corbijn’s second feature: His first was the elegiac and gorgeously shot (by Martin Ruhe) Control, based on the life story of Ian Curtis, lead singer of the influential and much-loved Manchester band Joy Division, who committed suicide at age 23 in 1980. Before Corbijn was a filmmaker, or even a director of videos for the likes of U2 and Depeche Mode, he was a photographer specializing in rock ‘n’ roll types as subjects; he had photographed Curtis and the other members of Joy Division early in his career, having left his native Holland for England because, as he’s said in interviews, he wanted “to be where that music comes from.”

‘Dancing With The Stars’ Carries On Tradition Of Casting MTV Stars

New castmembers the Situation and Audrina Patridge join the ranks of Steve-O, Kelly Osbourne and Drew Lachey. By Kyle Anderson Lacey Schwimmer and Steve-O Photo: ABC When the new season of ABC’s hit competition show “Dancing With the Stars” kicks off on September 20, it will feature two names from the MTV family: “Jersey Shore” breakout star Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino and “The Hills” head-turner Audrina Patridge . The two will compete against the likes of David Hasselhoff, Brandy, former NBA star Rick Fox, Michael Bolton, Bristol Palin, former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner, Disney star Kyle Massey, “Brady Bunch” star Florence Henderson, comedian Margaret Cho and “Dirty Dancing” legend Jennifer Grey. While we won’t know how Patridge or the Situation will fair until the first step is executed when the show premieres in three weeks, they both have a lot to live up to. MTV stars repeatedly show up as castmembers on “Dancing With the Stars,” and while their level of success has been mixed, they always leave an impression. One of them even won once. Drew Lachey, the former member of 98 Degrees and a staple on the hit MTV reality show “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica,” took home the mirror-ball trophy back in February of 2006. In the finals, Lachey narrowly beat out Jerry Rice (the former NFL wide receiver and a big fan favorite) and Stacy Keibler (a former WWE performer who has a bit of MTV history of her own — she appeared on the wrestling promotion’s “Heat” show on MTV at the beginning of the decade). Another MTV reality star had significantly less success. Shanna Moakler, one of the stars of the MTV series “Meet the Barkers,” appeared on the show in the fall of 2006. “Meet the Barkers” followed the lives of Moakler and her husband, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker, along with their three children. While Moakler’s wardrobe certainly kept her in the minds of people watching “Meet the Barkers,” she didn’t leave the same kind of impression on the “Dancing With the Stars” viewers and judges, as she was sent home during the second week of competition. Kelly Osbourne fared significantly better. Though she struggled early in the fall 2009 season, the breakout star of “The Osbournes” ended up becoming one of the better narratives of the season, as she overcame injuries and rough treatment from the judges to become a pretty excellent dancer. She performed well in the finals against Mya and eventual winner Donny Osmond. Steve-O also became something of a dark horse during his run on the show. The “Jackass” featured player quickly became a favorite among fans of the show, and he outlasted the likes of Playboy model Holly Madison, actress Denise Richards and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Steve-O ended up finishing in eighth place, a strong showing for a guy who has made his living hurting himself. And even though he got knocked out during the second week of the competition, you can’t overlook Buzz Aldrin’s impact on “Dancing With the Stars.” Though Aldrin is certainly best known for his accomplishments in the space program, he is perhaps the ultimate MTV star, as he was the model for the Moonman, the prize that winners take home at the Video Music Awards . Aldrin nabbed some of the lowest scores in the history of the show, but he did it with a great deal of charm. How do you think Audrina and the Situation will fare on “Dancing With the Stars”? Glenn Beck: ‘Rick Sanchez Is The Dumbest Man Ever On Television’

Glenn Beck on Thursday told his radio audience that CNN’s Rick Sanchez is the dumbest man ever on television. As NewsBusters has been chronicling the bumblings and stumblings of Sanchez for quite some time, we’re certainly not going to take the other side of this debate. Even if we tried, it would be difficult for the conservative talker highlighted many of this genius’s missteps that we’ve also shared with our readers recently (video follows with transcript and clips of related miscues, h/t The Right Scoop ): GLENN BECK, HOST: The Rick Sanchez who I honestly don’t know how the man ties his own shoes. I’m sure he has slip ones. Rick Sanchez, quite possibly the dumbest man on television, and that’s saying something because there’s some dumb people in television. But Rick Sanchez I think has to be the dumbest man in television. A guy who doesn’t understand that a volcano can happen in a cold place like Iceland. (Begin audiotape) RICK SANCHEZ, CNN: I was just asking Chad, how can you get a volcano in Iceland? Isn’t it too when you think of a volcano, you think of, like, Hawaii and long words like that. You don’t think of Iceland. You think it’s too cold to have a volcano there. (End audiotape) BECK: Long words like Hawaii. (Begin audiotape) SANCHEZ: It’s too cold to have a volcano there. (End audiotape) BECK: Too cold to have a volcano there. And besides, when you think of volcanoes, you think of long words like Hawaii. STU BURGUIERE: Which are shorter than Iceland. BECK: What a dope. This guy’s the dumbest man ever on television. PAT GRAY: I don’t know how you can say that. BECK: You don’t know? GRAY: I don’t. I don’t know how you BECK: That’s the only example I have. GRAY: Well, there might be others, but… (Begin audiotape) SANCHEZ: 3:00. Thanks so much, Wolf, appreciate it. Look forward to seeing you. Good job on the Situation Room today, as I’m sure you will do. Up next, ad lib, a tease, that’s what it says right here. (End audiotape) BECK: What a dope. GRAY: But I mean, you couldn’t find anything else. BECK: No. (Begin audiotape) SCIENTIST: Down here we had this big drop. This is about a 9 meter drop. SANCHEZ: Nine meter drop? SCIENTIST: Nine meters. SANCHEZ: What does that mean? SCIENTIST: Well, it means that the ocean waves are doing something, that we’re seeing some changes. It’s been going down and SANCHEZ: By the way, nine meters in English is? (End audiotape) GRAY: Still nine meters, Rick, it’s still nine meters. BECK: Still nine meters. And meters is English. GRAY: (Laughing). BECK: What a dope. GRAY: I love it. BECK: Anyway, so here’s his here’s his latest. “If you start going into who’s giving money, you gotta go to Rome and start asking where’s the money going into Rome.” What? And you have to go to the Mormons and ask, what are they doing with their money?” No, I don’t know if you get this, Rick. The Catholic church and no renegade part of the Catholic church is flying planes into building. GRAY: Yeah, but remember that group, that band of marauding Mormons? Remember them? BECK: They were really… GRAY: Remember them? BECK: Holy cow, yeah. GRAY: Remember they continued to scream that they would do it again, too? BECK: Yeah. GRAY: Remember that? BECK: And they were like, yi, yi, yi, yi, yi, no coffee! Oh, that was great! GRAY: Threaten Starbucks? Oh, my gosh. BECK: Well, they threatened never to walk into a Starbucks because there was really nothing well, the hot cocoa is pretty good. So this Mormon goes in there. But anyway, that’s a whole different story. You are onto something, Rick. You are onto something. And when I think of Catholics and Mormons, I normally think of really… bigger words like decent. GRAY: Or Jew. BECK: (Laughing). Long words like that.

Nelly Set To Drop 5.0 In November

St. Louis star rolling out singles ‘Tippin’ In Da Club,’ ‘Just a Dream’ in advance of his November 16 LP. By Jayson Rodriguez Nelly Photo: Michael Buckner/ Getty Images It’s not a roll-out for another double album, but Nelly is gearing up for the release of his next project via two separate singles: One is the party-friendly “Tippin’ In Da Club” and the other, a more laid-back number, is titled “Just a Dream.” Both songs were recently serviced to radio and will appear on the St. Louis rapper’s forthcoming LP, 5.0, due to arrive November 16. Dropping dual singles is similar to the way Nelly introduced one of his past projects, 2004’s Sweat and Suit. The two albums were released on the same day, but with different themes — one aimed at the club and the other targeted toward the ladies. Of course, 5.0 is just one album, the rapper’s 5th overall and his first since 2008’s Brass Knuckles. Late last year, Nelly told MTV News that he was eager to prove himself after the lukewarm reception to Brass Knuckles. “The thing is, I work best with two strikes, two outs,” Nelly explained in November. “I really think I do. As an artist, you want to wake up every day and feel like you’re doing something people don’t think you can do. Now I feel like I’ve been put in that position again, where it’s more doubt than expectancy. The doubt is what fuels me, so to speak. I’ve been real fortunate where I have great people around me. Everybody wants to freakin’ work with me — not that everybody didn’t [before], but it’s different because I didn’t work with a lot of people. Coming into this situation, it’s beautiful.” Producers Jim Jonsin and Rico Love worked on “Just A Dream,” while Dutch helmed “Tippin In Da Club.” Some of the collaborators slated for 5.0 include Play-N-Skillz, Sean Paul, Plies and Akon.
