CNN’s Blitzer Presses Crist on Party Preference, ‘You Just Can’t Caucus with Yourself’

During on interview on Saturday’s The Situation Room with independent Florida Senate candidate and Governor Charlie Crist, CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer pressed the former Republican to announce which party he would choose to caucus with if he is elected to the Senate, and brought up his current associations with Democrats and flip-flops toward more liberal positions. As Crist repeatedly tried to evade acknowledging the importance of being aligned with one of the two major parties to have influence, and the likelihood that he would ultimately choose to ally with one of the parties, Blitzer was persistent in pressing for an answer, at one point quipping: “You just can’t caucus with yourself, if you will, if you want to have some influence.” Crist eventually seemed to hint that his decision would depend on which party holds the majority after November: “And you’ve just hit on the pivotal issue really: What is in the best interests of the people of Florida? We don’t know who’s going to be in the majority November 2 nd after the general election. And so I think it’s important to keep an open mind, to stay committed only to one thing, and that’s the people of my state.” After playing a clip of Republican Senate candidate Marco Rubio accusing Crist of moving toward President Obama politically, Blitzer noted: “But are you increasingly embracing the Obama agenda? Because he’s saying you flip-flopped on a whole lot of issues where you were a Republican, but now you’re siding with the Democrats, including President Obama.” Below is a transcript of the relevant portion of the Saturday, August 14, The Situation Room on CNN: WOLF BLITZER: All right, let’s talk a little bit about why you’re here in Washington. Among other reasons, obviously, you want to be in the Situation Room, our Situation Room- GOVERNOR CHARLIE CRIST (I-FL), LAUGHING: I came here to see you. BLITZER: -but tonight you’re going to a fundraiser and some prominent Democrats are hosting this fundraiser for you, including someone very close to the former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton. What does that mean? Are you now a Democrat for all practical purposes? CRIST: I think it means we have broad support, and I’m very pleased by that. I mean, from Republicans, Democrats, independents. I think everybody has the notion and the idea that they would like an independent voice in the United States Senate fighting for Floridians first. And that’s what this is really all about – being independent, putting people above the party, and making sure that they have a voice in the Senate that’s an honest broker, looks out for their interests first. And Democrats and Republicans and independents want it. BLITZER: Are you getting more support now from Republicans or Democrats? CRIST: I’d say it’s pretty evenly split. I mean, you know, a lot of friends from the Republican party have stayed with us, continued to help, and God bless them for that. New Democrats who have become very good friends and some Democrats have been friend for a long time are just stepping up in a much more significant way now. BLITZER: The fundraiser tonight’s going to be basically Democrats, though? CRIST: That’s correct, it is. BLITZER: There are two independent U.S. Senators, as you know – Bernie Sanders and Joe Lieberman. But they both caucus with the Democrats and the Democrats are in the majority. They have chairmanship committees and committee rankings and all of that. If you’re elected to the United States Senate, will you caucus with the Democrats or the Republicans? CRIST: I’ve always said that I’ll caucus with the people of Florida. And what I mean by that is, issue by issue, whatever’s in the best interests of the people of my state, my fellow Floridians, I want to be able to be with those that are going to help Florida. BLITZER: But you got to make a decision because, if you’re not going to be caucusing with one party or the other party, you’re not going to have any committee ranking, you’re not going to have any influence in the United States Senate. You’re going to have to make a major decision. CRIST: Well, if I have the honor of winning, I’ll have a vote in the United States Senate. BLITZER: You’ll have one vote, but if you’re chairman of the committee, if you caucus with the Democrats, chairman of a subcommittee, you could have some influence, so you’re going to have to decide whether to caucus with the Democrats or the Republicans. You just can’t caucus with yourself, if you will, if you want to have some influence. CRIST: Well, I got to keep my eye on the ball, and the eye on the ball for me means looking at November 2 nd. I’m not going to be a chairman of anything if I don’t get elected to the Senate first. So I have to continue to work hard, campaign hard, continue to strive to earn the trust and confidence of my fellow Floridians. BLITZER: So when the Democrats at the fundraiser tonight ask you, Charlie Crist, we’re going to give you money, they’ll say. Are you promising us you’ll be with Harry Reid and the Democrats assuming he gets re-elected in the United States Senate, you won’t go with Mitch McConnell and the Republicans? CRIST: I’m not going to commit to either one because I’m only committed to the people of Florida. BLITZER: So you’ll commit after, if you’re elected. Is that what you’re saying? CRIST: Probably. BLITZER: Because you’ll have to caucus, you’ll have to make that decision down the road. CRIST: Well, I don’t know that Wayne Morris did. I think he literally took a seat in the middle of the aisle, right? BLITZER: He didn’t. You’re right. You’re right on that. He didn’t. He took a seat in the middle, but, you know, then the people of Florida could suffer if you don’t have the influence that you would like to have. CRIST: And you’ve just hit on the pivotal issue really: What is in the best interests of the people of Florida? We don’t know who’s going to be in the majority November 2 nd after the general election. And so I think it’s important to keep an open mind, to stay committed only to one thing, and that’s the people of my state. BLITZER: Your Republican challenger, Marco Rubio, was here. He was sitting in that seat in the Situation Room just a little while ago on July 20. He said this: MARCO RUBIO, FLORIDA REPUBLICAN SENATORIAL CANDIDATE: I don’t believe he’s really an independent. I think there’s increasing evidence that he now is embracing the Obama agenda. BLITZER: You heard what he said. CRIST: I heard what he said. BLITZER: You’re smiling. CRIST: Well, why wouldn’t I smile? BLITZER: But are you increasingly embracing the Obama agenda? Because he’s saying you flip-flopped on a whole lot of issues where you were a Republican, but now you’re siding with the Democrats, including President Obama. CRIST: Well, that’s what you’d expect him to say. He’s my opponent after all, one of them. And we don’t know who the other one’s gong to be yet until the primary concludes on August 24. So I look forward to that. I really do. And there will be distinctions between us on a lot of issues. But that’s the kind of thing you hear from a lot of the, you know, party candidates, if you will. They like to take shots at people. I’m not here to really do that today. I’m here to offer myself to the people of Florida as an independent voice who wants to rise above that kind of back-and-forth stuff that’s driving them crazy all over the country.

‘Jersey Shore’ Stars Are ‘Like The Beatles’ Of Seaside Heights

‘Girls come into the store and actually start crying,’ owner Danny Merk tells MTV News of reactions in season-one T-shirt shop. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Ignacio Guzman Emilio and “Jersey Shore” fans Photo: MTV News Late last month, Seaside Heights began to prepare for the pop-culture hurricane that is the cast of “Jersey Shore.” After sunning themselves down in Miami, Snooki, the Situation and their pals headed up north to their old Jersey stomping ground, where they resumed shooting what will be season three of their hit reality show.

Snooki Calls ‘Jersey Shore’ Castmate Angelina ‘Sad’

‘She didn’t really open up to anybody,’ Snooki says of why her housemate never fit in. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Audrey Kim Snooki Photo: MTV News Early on in season one of “Jersey Shore,” feisty Angelina got axed from her job at the boardwalk T-shirt shop, tossed her belongings in some trash bags and fled Seaside Heights. None of her castmates expected the self-declared Kim Kardashian of Staten Island to return for the new, Miami Beach-based season, but Snooki, the Situation and the rest of the crew got a serious shock when they arrived and found out they’d once again be bunking with Angelina . They were not pleased. “I just feel like she didn’t fit into the family,” Snooki told MTV News. “When I saw her in the house, when I walked into Miami, I was like, ‘What is this girl doing here? Why are you here? We could have brought [Deena] in.’ ” That would be Deena Nicole Cortese , a 23-year-old pal of Snooki’s who joined the show after the cast left Miami and headed back up to the Shore. “I’m different because I’m just a personable person,” Deena told us . “I don’t take things to heart. People can make fun of me ’til the day I die, and I will just take it in and be like, ‘Yeah, you know what? Whatever.’ ” But when the show was taping down South, it was just Angelina facing off against her other roommates. And the results weren’t pretty, as the first few episodes of the second season make clear. JWoww threatened multiple times to brawl with her, and Snooki declared, “You’re a f—ing white rat and you’re f—ing pale and you’re nasty.” OK, then. The bottom line is that, after the drama of season one and some alleged off-camera smack talk, the relationship between Angelina and the rest of the “Shore” folks was nearly beyond repair. “Angelina, she just didn’t fit in with anybody, and she didn’t really open up to anybody,” Snooki said. “I feel that’s why nobody could really connect with her. And it’s sad. … At first, we didn’t even want to look at her or give her the time of day. But then we felt bad about it, and we gave her a second chance. And she did what she did with it. You’re going to have to see what happens.” Do you think the rest of the cast gave Angelina a chance? Sound off in the comments. Don’t miss “Jersey Shore” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Family of Mel Gibson Stands By Star

Mel Gibson is not only in a nasty fight with Oksana Grigorieva over custody of their baby daughter, he’s facing a domestic violence investigation and major fallout from her set of rage-filled, possibly career-ending leaked phone tapes. But he still has his family. “He has a good support system in his friends and family,” a friend tells People adding that his seven kids are “absolutely” standing by their father. Gibson regularly speaks to his soon-to-be-ex wife, Robyn, with whom he split in April 2009, and has seven children from a nearly 30-year union. It was Robyn Gibson who came to his defense last week, filing an affidavit swearing he was never once abusive during their entire time together. Mel has allies in Robyn Gibson and their seven kids. According to a source, it was her idea: “Mel didn’t ask Robyn for the affidavit in which she says that he never engaged in any physical abuse towards her.” “Robyn just felt that enough is enough … She still values her marriage to Mel and is sick of [how the press portrays] Mel as a heartless, abusive monster.” A new Mel Gibson tape leaked on Tuesday was perhaps the most damning of the six released to date, as he appeared to admit a violent outburst. But despite what you hear on the tapes, Robyn is standing by the actor, who she calls an amazing father. The source said, “she is still protective of him.” A Gibson family source says that the actor’s family has long seen Oksana Grigorieva , who Mel split with earlier this year, as a calculating person. “She pushed him over the edge,” the source says. “While they do think he needs help for his anger issues, Mel’s family is supportive of him.” Thoughts?

Jersey Shore Cast Re-Ups For Season Three

The Jersey Shore salary controversy seems to have dissipated as quickly as it arose in the first place, with new reports saying the whole cast has re-signed. A rep for the network confirmed Tuesday that all principal castmates have inked new contracts to shoot the show’s third season, save for Angelina Pivarnick. Who? Oh, right, the quote-unquote Kim Kardashian of Staten Island who bailed after one episode last season, then came back, then evidently flaked again. Oh well. Guess she couldn’t hang with the wild times of Snooki, J-Woww, The Situation and friends, who will now bank an impressive $30,000 per episode. That’s up from $5,000 per episode in Season One. FIST-PUMP : They’re back in business. “MTV is pleased that the Jersey Shore cast will be returning to Seaside Heights to continue production on Season Three,” the network said in a statement. “Not only have they become a part of the MTV family, but fans worldwide have fallen in love with them. Stay tuned for Jersey Shore Season 2 on July 29.” MTV had quite the situation on its hands, as Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi and Co. demanded a giant raise before allowing cameras to follow their awesome lives. The Situation was the first to re-sign. The rest followed. All water under the polluted bridge now. Let the Jersey Shore quotes , club-hopping, fist-pumping, hair-oiling, fake-tanning and boardwalk brawling begin.

Demi Lovato Wants To Embrace Her ‘Inner Soul’ Diva On Next Album

‘I’m straying away from the rock this time,’ the ‘Camp Rock 2’ star says of new R&B sound. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Audrey Kim Demi Lovato Photo: Jesse Grant/Getty Images Last year, Demi Lovato released her pop/rock sophomore album, Here We Go Again, and now Lovato is, well, at it again. She’s back in the studio, but unlike her first two efforts, this one will sound a little less hardcore, as Demi embraces her inner-R&B diva. “I’m really excited for working on new music in the spare time that I have before I go out on tour with the Jonas Brothers,” she told MTV News on Monday in Los Angeles at the VH1 Do Something Awards . “I’m working on new music, writing new songs, trying to approach a different route, doing a new sound,” Lovato continued. “I’m really excited. It’ll be fun. It’s more R&B/pop. I’m trying to bring out my inner ‘soul’; a new side of Demi,” she laughed. “I’m straying away from the rock this time.” If Lovato’s enthusiasm about working on her next project wasn’t obvious already, her Twitter posts make it clear. A lot of her recent tweets have been updates about working on that new album or just gigging around with friends. “I’m literally in love with music . Everything I do in life is for music. If I could, I would marry music,” she wrote over the weekend. “Gathered around with friends playing music.. I live and breathe for these moments in my life. “Yes!!! Finished writing a song that I’m so proud to call my own!! It’s moments like these that make me never want to stop writing music.. :D,” Lovato tweeted just days before. “Writing a song that I think my South American fans will love…. 😉 this ones for you guys…. Just got the rough cut of the song we did yesterday… soooo excited right now!” Although it’ll be some time before fans actually get to hear these new songs, they can check out Lovato on her Disney Channel series “Sonny With a Chance.” Earlier this year, she teased some of what to expect during the rest of the season. “I think surprises will include guest stars, really awesome guest stars,” she told MTV News. “And also the romance between Sterling Knight’s character and Sonny. There’s definitely a romance factor, but it’s interesting because they play on rival shows and the casts aren’t really fond of each other. So, you see what happens.” Are you excited to hear what Demi sounds like singing R&B? Let us know in the comments! Related Photos Demi Lovato, Joe Jonas Attend The 2010 Do Something Awards

Lindsay Lohan Mug Shot: Orange Jumpsuit Hilarity

Good to see Lindsay Lohan is taking her situation seriously. Having been thrown in jail just hours ago, the much-maligned star’s latest mug shot has been released, featuring our girl wearing a sharp orange jumpsuit. She’s also wearing some smart-ass smirk. One of our all-time favorite celebrity mug shots was taken moments after Lindsay arrived at Lynwood Correctional Facility to begin a 90-day jail sentence. According to her booking sheet, Lindsay checked in at 5’6″ and 118 pounds … Big enough to kick someone’s a$$? Or will she be someone’s b!tch? Lindsay Lohan’s mug shot, released a little whole ago, puts to rest any doubt that this jail sentence will wipe the smirk off the brat’s face … at least for a day or two .
