Activists keep Nev. horses from going to slaughter

Stephanie Hoefener of the Lancaster, Calif.-based Livesavers Wild Horse Rescue group said activists purchased 172 horses for $31,415. The other two horses were acquired by private individuals for their personal use, she said. “We're excited so many people came together to save the horses,” Hoefener said. “This is amazing, and we all feel joyful.” The horses were rounded up by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management last month near the Nevada-Utah line and turned over to the Nevada Department of Agriculture for disposal. Agriculture department officials acknowledge the estray horses could have wound up at slaughterhouses because they did not have the federal protections afforded to wild-roaming horses. The horses are believed to be strays or descendants of horses abandoned by private owners over the years in Pilot Valley north of West Wendover. “For advocacy groups to step up to the plate and make a financial commitment like this to save the horses, we think this is a wonderful thing,” Nevada Department of Agriculture spokesman Ed Foster said. Jill Starr, president of Lifesavers, said the purchase of the horses at the Fallon auction was made possible by the financial backing of Ellie Phipps Price, owner of Sand Hill Durell Vineyards in Sonoma, Calif. Madeleine Pickens, wife of oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens, also contributedfinanciallyy. Starr said high bidders of such horses usually are representatives of slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada. The meat of the horses is processed for sale in Europe and Asia, where it fetches as much as $25 a pound, she added. “We showed the BLM and the Nevada Department of Agriculture that we will not let them throw our wild horses away like yesterday's news,” Starr said. “They are important to every American and hold high value as part of our country's history.” BLM spokeswoman JoLynn Worley said her agency didn't consider the 174 horses as federally protected mustangs because they came from a valley with more than 200 landowners. “We look at the long-term history of what is going on out there in Pilot Valley,” she said. “Who knows what horses were released over time.” The BLM has launched an effort to remove thousands of wild horses from the range across the West, saying the roundups are necessary because the mustang population is growing so rapidly that the animals are running out of food and damaging the range. Activists have sued over the roundups, contending the agency is removing the mustangs to make room for livestock grazing and other interests. added by: 02

Royce Da 5’9" Talks Possible Slaughterhouse, Solo Deals With Eminem

‘Just because the paperwork ain’t done don’t mean we ain’t been working,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Royce Da 5’9″ Photo: Djamilla Rosa Cochran/ WireImage The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Hope everyone enjoyed their Fourth of July holiday! We’re fresh from New Orleans and the Essence Music Fest. N.O., thank you again for always showing love. Make sure you read up on our adventures out there elsewhere on the website. On to the business at hand: Mixtape Daily ‘s periodic check-in on the Slaughterhouse/ Shady Records deal . The group (Royce Da 5’9″, Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz and Crooked I) still isn’t officially signed as of yet, but we asked Royce whether he would ink with Shady as a solo artist if his team is onboard. After all, Royce has been traveling with Marshall, and the two have a long history. “We haven’t talked about that,” Royce said of a solo deal with Shady. “Right now, we just chillin’. We’re getting back acclimated, being around each other, getting the creative juices flowing. Making sure we’re on the same page creatively. We’re just gonna focus on the Slaughterhouse album right now. “Man, I haven’t thought about it,” Royce reiterated about his solo deal. “After I put this next album out, I’m a free agent. So I’m sure it’s a possibility. But it’s not something we’re really thinking about right now. I’m gonna totally focus on the group, because I think [this] sh– could be something special.” Royce said he’s hoping Slaughterhouse can drop a project this year and he can come with a solo opus sometime in 2011. “Depending on when this deal closes, which should be very soon, I think I’m gonna put my focus on the group,” he said. “I got a lot of material done for my solo album, but I wanna take my time with it. I’m looking at next year for my album. I’ve been doing sh– sporadically. I wanna put all my focus into the Slaughterhouse album first. I would like for my album to catapult off the next Slaughterhouse album. We’re gonna cancel everything. We did the last [Slaughterhouse] album so fast, because we was behind the eight ball, time-wise. It ain’t gonna be no timeline on this album. We going in, and we gonna keep recording until it’s right.” Meanwhile, as Slaughterhouse continue to work on separate projects (Royce just released the mixtape Bar Exam 3 and Ortiz has his Yaowa tape dropping in the next few weeks), the Nine Nickel said Em is making sure they stay active as a collective while they wait on the label paperwork. “Em gave me all types of tracks. Dre beats,” Royce said. “Just because the paperwork ain’t done don’t mean we ain’t been working. We definitely been throwing ideas around. [Em] stressed he wants to have a lot of involvement in the project. We want him to be as involved as he wants to be. Anytime he runs an idea by me, I respect him so much, I’m down with it. If he gives me a beat, like, ‘Yo, y’all would sound ill on this,’ I’m going to record it. That’s pretty much what we been doing. He hasn’t did no beats and gave me nothing yet, but he has given me a lot of beats from other producers.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines or follow the Mixtape Daily team on Twitter: @shaheemreid and @mongosladenyc .

Royce Da 5’9" Hopes To ‘Showcase’ His Personality On New Mixtape

‘People listen to me and think I’m always so serious,’ he tells Mixtape Daily of fans’ misperceptions. By Shaheem Reid Royce Da 5’9 Photo: MTV News Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Mixtape : The Bar Exam 3: The Most Interesting Man in the World Headliners : Royce Da 5’9″ and DJ Whoo Kid Key Cameos : Kid Vishis on “Go Hard Pt. 1” and “Pt. 2,” Black Milk and Elzhi on “Real Hip-Hop” and Slaughterhouse on “Beamer, Benz or Bentley (ShadyMegaMix)” Essential Info : Royce Da 5’9″ has been known to indulge in a drink or two at times, but not even he could have guessed that he would be influenced by Dos Equis. The beer’s “Most Interesting Man in the World” ad campaign served as a catalyst for his new mixtape. “I was gonna call it Bar Exam 3: Multiple Personalities, ” Royce explained. “It shows different sides to me. Then I ran across that intro [of ‘The Most Interesting Man in the World’] on the Net. I just thought the sh– was hilarious. So it’s like I just switched up at the end. I called it that because I wanted to use those skits. I thought those skits were hilarious. It’s just that cut-and-dried.” 5’9″ kept the comedy going on a record called “I Hate Your Pants.” He sings — yes, sings — about his disdain for trousers that are too tight. “With this mixtape, I was trying to showcase my personality more,” Royce said. “People listen to me and think I’m always so serious, when actually I’m the exact opposite. I’m always joking around and drinking and having fun. I was trying to bring that across in this. I think I nailed that in ‘I Hate Your Pants.’ That’s an ongoing joke in the studio, about skinny jeans. We actually got something on wax that showed that. I did it quick. Two eight-bar verses and the hook. It took me longer to make the beat.” “Taxi Driver” is a conceptual track, on which the Detroit mic king is behind the wheel and alone with his thoughts until he picks up two passengers. “It’s a song I did a long time ago,” he explained. “I wanted to put it on The Bar Exam, because I felt it didn’t get the light it deserved. It’s like I’m driving in a taxi. I got two passengers in the car. One of the passengers is Tupac, one is Biggie. I drop ‘Pac off at the place he got killed. I drop Biggie at the place he got killed. Basically, we lost hip-hop when we lost these two. One of them is named ‘Hip’ and one is named ‘Hop.’ But it’s Biggie and ‘Pac.” Royce even mimics the two legends’ voices and deliveries on the record as he raps from their perspective. On “187 (Response),” Royce disses Saigon, responding to an interview from last year where Sai said Slaughterhouse could not make records. “I don’t have a problem with him,” Royce said of Saigon. “He just sparked a competitive nerve in me. It made me wanna compete. He said, ‘Them n—as can’t write no record.’ If you feel free enough to speak on somebody like that, I feel he should take that on the chin. I don’t feel it should be some kind of backlash. He said something, and I said something. I’m totally prepared to leave it right there.” Royce also said his record aimed at Saigon has nothing to do with Sai’s past problems with Joe Budden. “Joey is my man,” he said. “I make it my business to stay outta the sh– he has going on. Me and Saigon was cool. I was cool with Saigon before I got cool with Joey.” Royce said Slaughterhouse’s signing with Shady Records has been stuck in a web of red tape, but the deal is looking like it should be finalized in a matter of weeks. As for Royce’s solo LP, he’s not sure if that will be in the cards for Shady as well. Eminem’s U.K. Freestyle ‘Took Us Back,’ Royce Da 5’9" Says

‘It was like we was kids again,’ he says of getting three verses apiece along with Denaun Porter on Tim Westwood’s radio show. By Shaheem Reid Eminem Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Royce Da 5’9″ is back in the D. He’s taking a little time — and we do mean a little time — to rest up after his trip overseas with Eminem , Alchemist and D12 member Denaun Porter. “It was great, man,” Royce, on the phone from his house in Detroit, said of the trip, which was a press run in support of Em’s Recovery. “I was going around them and soaking up game. I think it’s phenomenal how [Eminem manager] Paul [Rosenberg] can be around us joking one minute, and then the next second, he’s on the phone handling business and dealing with point people. It’s so tight. I peep the way they do things, the way Em knocks sh– out without complaining. It teaches me a lot. It’s like being a fly on the wall. You about to be a part of something special. I truly feel that Em is about to go on a crazy run. The album is phenomenal. I see a pattern, and I’m glad to be a part of it. We had a great time over there. All work.” Royce, who started a friendship with Em back in the mid ’90s, is soon to be an official member of the Shady roster. The long-talked-about Slaughterhouse/ Shady Records deal is in the fourth quarter, Royce said. One of the highlights of the trips overseas was a stop off at Tim Westwood’s radio show, where Royce, Em and Porter kicked three verses apiece . “You know what’s crazy? Denaun was like, ‘We should just do two verses. The three verses is going to be too long,’ ” Royce said. “Em was the one pushing for three verses. He was like, ‘Let’s do three verses.’ I’m like, ‘Damn, he must really wanna get these off.’ When I heard them, I knew why he wanted to spit them. When we did it, it was fun. It took us back. When we got on the jet going back, we was talking the whole way about that sh–. That sh– reminded me of back in the day when we used to go in. Me and Em got an 11-minute freestyle on Stretch Armstrong’s show 10 years ago. It took us back to that. It was like we was kids again. It was fun.” Royce just released his new mixtape with DJ Whoo Kid, Bar Exam 3: The Most Interesting Man in the World. What do you think of Em’s new material? Let us know in the comments! Justin Bieber Fever Takes Over ‘Today’ Show

Al Roker even gets a policeman to admit he’s got the fever. By Eileen Reslen Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images If a lot of young girls were absent from school on Friday morning (June 4), the cause could well be an outbreak of Bieber fever. Justin Bieber visited the “Today” on Friday morning for a free concert outside NBC studios in New York’s Rockefeller Plaza, where the teen sensation played a mini-concert featuring five of his most popular songs. The epidemic wasn’t confined to kids: As the show’s Al Roker pointed out, it wasn’t even above the law. “One question,” Roker asked a policeman. “Sergeant, do you have Bieber fever?” “Yes,” the officer answered with a smirk. “It’s official: The NYPD has Bieber fever,” Roker said. An army of Bieber fans from all over the country filled up the plaza with high-pitched voices and brightly-colored posters. “This may be the biggest crowd we’ve had for days, the show’s Matt Lauer said, to which Meredith Vierra replied, “It reminds me of Paul — Paul McCartney. So, I get it.” The broadcast was taken over by Bieber fever, with almost every segment, from the weather to interviews with celebrities, being “Bieberized.” Roker’s forecast could barely be heard above the fans’ screams, and his signature sign-off was tweaked to say, “Here’s what’s happening in your neck of the Bieberwoods!” “Get Him to the Greek” star Jonah Hill was there to promote the film, and his interview was also obscured by the teen screams. “I have Bieber fever all over my body right now,” Hill joked. Bieber rushed down from his pre-performance rehearsal and interrupted the interview to give Hill a fist-pound for his comments. Before his performance, Bieber told Lauer how much his life has changed since becoming famous. “It’s pretty crazy that now I go out and, you know, I’m always asked for autographs and stuff, but that’s kind of what I signed up for,” Bieber said. He added that his career goal is longevity. “I want to, you know, be an artist that doesn’t just come out with one song and you know, then they’re done,” Bieber said. As he performed in the humid morning air, Bieber bounced around with his background dancers through “Baby” and “One Time” and others without missing a beat, with some of his dance moves seemingly inspired by mentor Usher — he chest pumped and moon-walked across the stage. After the performance, Bieber stuck around to sign some autographs, but not before talking about his upcoming tour. “It starts in like a couple of weeks, so I’m really excited,” he said. “There’s going to be a lot of lights and a lot of, like, magic stuff, which is going to be cool.” What did you think of Justin Bieber’s appearance on the “Today” show? Eminem Reveals He’s ‘Rebuilding’ Shady Records

‘There’s a new group we’re looking to sign, Slaughterhouse,’ Em says of hip-hop group. By Jayson Rodriguez Eminem Photo: Universal With the release last year of his album Relapse, Eminem announced to the world that he was looking after himself and his music after a five-year hiatus. Now, as he puts the finishing touches on his follow-up, Recovery, the Detroit MC says he plans to focus on his record label, Shady Records. In an interview with BBC’s Radio 1 on Friday (June 4), Eminem was asked about mentoring up-and-coming rappers, and Em admitted he’d been eying a few acts. “We’re kinda trying to start the process of rebuilding our label, Shady Records,” he said. “I’m sure I’ll be looking for younger talent, coming up. There’s a new group we’re looking to sign, Slaughterhouse,” he said referring to the rap supergroup made up of Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Crooked I, and Royce da 5’9″. “But I don’t want to give anything away. We’re looking at a few [artists] now.” Slaughterhouse has been linked to Em for some time, beginning last year when the foursome appeared with Eminem in Drake’s “Forever” video. Their cameo led to speculation that the heralded underground lyricists would soon be connecting with the Slim Shady camp. Royce da 5’9″ spoke to MTV News in September and didn’t deny the rumors. “It’s very much what it looks like,” Royce said of Slaughterhouse joining the Shady roster. “That’s always a possibility. It’s conversations being had, very good conversations. I just did an interview recently and they asked me to address the rumors. I said, ‘Rumors are what they are, people see things and they jump to a conclusion.’ I never said it wasn’t going to happen — I left it right there in the middle. I think it would be a great thing if it could happen.” Earlier this year, Ortiz said negotiations were in the “ninth inning,” but more important, the Brooklyn wordsmith revealed Slaughterhouse and Emimem have already begun collaborating on music while they wait for the ink to dry on the paperwork. “We got in the studio with Em already,” he said. “We traded bars and stuff with all of us.” Which MCs would you like to see Eminem sign to Shady Records? Eminem Debuts Album Covers For Recovery

Two versions of cover art for rapper’s new album show a more reticent Eminem. By Kyle Anderson Eminem’s Recovery Photo: Interscope On his recent chart-topping single “Not Afraid,” Eminem includes one of the more shocking confessions of his career in the lyrics. “Let’s be honest/ That last Relapse CD was ‘eh,’ ” he raps during the song’s second verse, admitting to the universe that his hit 2009 album Relapse was spotty at best, a sentiment shared by fans and critics alike. Slim Shady and his producers have made it clear that his hotly anticipated upcoming album Recovery will keep its distance from his previous effort, a point that’s driven home by the just-unveiled album art , which Em premiered on his official Web site late Monday. While the cover to Relapse features the man born Marshall Mathers’ visage constructed of pills, the two covers for Recovery show a more reticent side of the rapper. In the first one, Eminem is walking down a desolate road. We only see his back, but the message is clear: The road to recovery (and to Recovery ) is long and hard. Just as Em’s 2000 album The Marshall Mathers LP had a second cover art variation, so does Recovery. The other cover shows Eminem on a brick courtyard in some sort of futuristic-looking office park. He is encased in a glass cube and sitting on a couch reading a book in front of a giant flat-screen television. It is meant to look like some sort of performance art or observational experiment, but again, Slim is all by himself in the frame. After ducking out of the public eye for a few months, Eminem is back to business and has quite a few projects on the horizon. In addition to Recovery (out June 22), he can be heard on the remix to B.o.B’s “Airplanes” (currently making a bid to be the official song of the summer of 2010), is working on signing Slaughterhouse to his Shady Records label, and has a pair of massive concerts with Jay-Z in Detroit and New York coming up in September. Based on the album art, what do you expect from Eminem’s upcoming LP, Recovery ? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Eminem
