The film world awoke this morning to news that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had reformulated its Best Picture Oscar rules for the second time in as many years, allowing for anywhere from five to 10 nominees depending on a film’s percentage of first-place votes. This is brilliant. It will also fail to fix what’s fundamentally wrong with the Oscars.
Stephenie Meyer had a vintage-inspired look in mind when she wrote of Twilight heroine Bella Swan’s wedding dress , and fan anticipation has been abuzz with speculation about which fashion designer would nab the coveted task of creating the dreamy outfit. It’s not just any old costuming gig; if the dress takes Twi-hard breaths away in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 , the chosen couturier will enjoy residual Twilight -themed wedding sales for years. So, who’s the lucky fashionista?
Tuesday, Movieline brought you word about a special audio recording of Go the F**k to Sleep that Werner Herzog did for the New York Public Library to celebrate the release of Adam Mansbach’s new children’s book. Good news to report: a clip of the recording has surfaced online, and it’s as Herzog-ian as you would hope. “The windows are dark in the town child. The whales huddled down in the deep. I’ll read you one last book, if you swear you’ll go…” Well, you know. This is hilarious. Click through to watch.
Houston MC talks to Mixtape Daily about teaming with host Don Cannon and a gang of rap faves like Wiz Khalifa on latest tape. By Rob Markman Trae The Truth Photo: A.B.N. Don’t Sleep: Necessary Notables Headliner : Trae Tha Truth Mixtape : Undisputed Key Cameo : “Getting Paid,” featuring Wiz Khalifa Essential Info : A lot of MCs claim to be your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper, but judging from the amount of love that Houston’s Trae Tha Truth has been receiving lately, he may have sole claim to that crown. Just check the track list on his latest mixtape, Undisputed, which includes appearances by Young Jeezy, Pusha T, Rick Ross and Wiz Khalifa. It’s clear that Trae gets his respect. Undisputed comes as Trae is putting the finishing touches on his new studio album, Street King. The tape is hosted by DJ Don Cannon, and for Trae, the union between he and Cannon, is significant. “It was kinda something that was overdue with me and Cannon’s career. We’ve been in the talks of it for a minute but we both was real tied up,” he told Mixtape Daily. “Cannon actually hit me maybe two to three weeks before we put it out and was like, ‘It’s time.’ When he told me it was time, I came back into Houston , kinda stopped what I was doing, and got it going.” Despite being well-respected in the industry, Trae still feels that he and Cannon have a long way to go in terms of mainstream notice. “We were doing the tape just off the strength of us, just because we feel a lot of people overlook me for what I do on the music and a lot of people overlook him as far as what he do on the DJ game,” Trae explained. “We’re both household names, but we still gotta show a lot of people what it is.” Driven by hard-core street cuts like “Gettin Paid,” featuring Wiz Khalifa, Trae continues to reign as underground rap royalty, his stock rising with each release. On “Inkredible (Remix),” producer StreetRunner adds a new beat to Trae’s 2010 single, while Jadakiss adds a new verse. Now that the tape has dropped, Trae seems to have picked up the right momentum as he prepares the release of his full-length Street King on June 28. A week before the album’s release date, Trae will touch down in New York City for a rare headlining performance at SOB’s. Fred the Godson and French Montana are already confirmed guests, but Trae promised Mixtape Daily that there’ll be some surprises. Actor James Arness of Gunsmoke fame has passed away at age 88. “Jim passed away this morning at home with his wife of natural causes. He went quietly in his sleep,” Arness’ rep, Ginny Fazer, said earlier. “He is survived by his wife Janet, two sons and six grandchildren.” The 6’6” actor was best known for his role of Marshal Matt Dillon in the classic weekly series, which he played for an amazing 20 years. The funeral will be private, but fans are encouraged to make donations in Jim’s name to his favorite charity, United Cerebral Palsy. It’s unknown if he was ailing for an extended time period, but Arness left a farewell letter of sorts on his official website for his fans. “I had a wonderful life and was blessed with some many loving people and great friends,” he writes. With ‘Fight’ short film set to premiere Wednesday (April 20), here’s a look back at the beer-soaked history of the 1986 video. By James Montgomery Adam Yauch, Ricky Powell and Mike D in 1986 Photo: MTV News You get the feeling that, back in their hell-raising License To Ill heyday, the Beastie Boys derived some sort of perverse pleasure from blindsiding unsuspecting interviewers with profanities or non sequiturs. Or at least by dumping beer on them. Sufficed to say, they’ve mellowed some in recent years ( their vocabulary has improved , too), but back in the day, the Beasties lived to torment the media, and they did so by any means necessary. Take, for example, this rather revelatory bit of tape shot on December 31, 1986, at MTV’s 6th annual “Rock ‘N Roll New Year’s Eve Ball” (a party so huge that both Brian Setzer and the Georgia Satellites were in attendance). In it, a poor MTV News field producer corners the Beasties and attempts to ask them about their plans for 1987 — plans that included a headlining tour and a new video to shoot for “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” — and gets doused by a Budweiser, making a valiant attempt to shield the microphone from a soaking, with little success. And while it’s oddly compelling to watch a train wreck like this unfold, the reason we dug the tape out of our archives occurs just moments later, when the same producer, still wet with cheap beer, asks the MCs about their infamous “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)” video — the same video that serves as the inspiration for the band’s “Fight For Your Right Revisited” short film , which premieres Wednesday (April 20) at midnight on MTV2, mtvU and Palladia. Specifically, the interviewer asks the Boys about casting “the geeky guys” for the video, which gives them the opportunity to introduce “the man who played the main nerd,” their photographer-friend Ricky Powell (presumably right around the time “your girl got di–ed” by him.) And then, they pour beer on his head, too. But not before Powell curses on-air and then professes his love for “Black women with blonde hair.” So, yeah, it’s a pretty amazing bit of tape, even 25 years later. In celebration of just how far the Beastie Boys have come — and in anticipation of “Fight For Your Right Revisited” — we’re rolling it out for you right now. Enjoy — and wear a poncho! Don’t miss “Fight for Your Right Revisited” on Wednesday (April 20) at midnight on MTV2, mtvU, VH1 Classic and Palladia. The war of words between Spike Lee and Tyler Perry continues as Perry recently said at a press conference that “Spike can go straight to hell!” Lee has been a very vocal critic of Perry and his films. “I’m so sick of hearing about damn Spike Lee,” Perry said during a press conference . “Spike can go straight to hell! You can print that. I am sick of him talking about me, I am sick of him saying, ‘this is a coon, this is a buffoon.’ I am sick of him talking about black people going to see movies. This is what he said: ‘you vote by what you see,’ as if black people don’t know what they want to see.” “Each artist should be allowed to pursue their artistic endeavors, but I still think there is a lot of stuff out today that is coonery and buffoonery,” Lee said in 2009. “I know it’s making a lot of money and breaking records, but we can do better. … I am a huge basketball fan, and when I watch the games on TNT, I see these two ads for these two shows (Tyler Perry’s ‘Meet the Browns’ and ‘House of Payne’), and I am scratching my head. We got a black president, and we going back to Mantan Moreland and Sleep ‘n’ Eat?” Tyler Perry’s new film, Madea’s Big Happy Family , is in theaters this Friday. Whose side are you on?
