Image via Cheryl Maeder/Getty Mrs. America Contestants Say Pageant CEO David Marmel Is Racist Several Black women who competed in the Mrs. America (not “Miss”, different gig) pageant this year are charging the CEO/President David Marmel with making racist remarks including blaming Ebony Magazine for his frequent use of the n-word. According to CNN , three of these women, Kimberly Phillips, 2018 Delaware state titleholder, Missouri’s Brandy Palacios and 2018 New Jersey titleholder Crissy Timpson have hired lawyer Gloria Allred to represent them in their plea for a public apology, not a lawsuit. “At that point, Mr. Marmel asked if he could be frank with us,” Phillips said. He launched into a story about a black man he knew who grew up in the projects and chose school over drugs and gangs, and went on to become Marmel’s friend and attorney, Phillips said. “He (Marmel) then said that it is not the 1960s anymore and black people can’t rely on the government for assistance. He also stated that all black women need to stop having babies — with four baby daddies — and all black men are in jail because they need to stop selling drugs and killing each other,” Phillips said. Marmel, in cliche fashion, claims that his comments were “taken out of context”. However, he was witnessed making other remarks that make it pretty clear how he feels about Black folks. Kimberly Phillips recounts this part of Marmel’s racist azz conversation: “At that point, Mr. Marmel asked if he could be frank with us,” Phillips said. Somehow Black people using the n-word makes them racist according to white azz Marmel. He says he even started using the n-word “because they were brothers”. Why didn’t anyone at Ebony slap fire out of Marmel? But we digress… Bottom line is, these women want to make sure that Marmel is never allowed to speak to other Mrs. America contestants like this ever again. We can only hope that he’s removed from his position by someone who has the moral compass to give a damn.
(Image source/getty images) Homelessness In NYC Public Schools Are Reportedly At A High A The New York Times report is shining a light on the realities of 10% of all public school kids, they’re homeless. NYT says one out of every 10 students lived in temporary housing during the last school year. That means about one out of every 10 students in New York City will sleep in a homeless shelter or in the homes of relatives. That’s the highest rate of homeless students the city has ever seen. This is sad because homeless students tend to struggle academically: Reportedly, in the 2015-16 school year, just 12 percent of students living in shelters passed the state math exam, and 15 percent passed English. New York City has one of the highest populations of homeless students of any big city in America. About 5 percent of students in Chicago’s public schools were homeless last year, and just above 3 percent of Los Angeles’ students were homeless in 2016. There are about 1.1 million children in the city’s public schools in total. That means over 100,000 kids have no real homes to call their own. They said close to 38,000 homeless students lived in a shelter last year, down slightly from the previous year; the rest stayed with relatives while their families looked for permanent housing. Staggering, but who is the blame? The rent in NYC is HIGH and nearly impossible for someone making a median wage because of gentrification. NYC is supposed to be a “philanthropic” city, and NO ONE (wealthy) is offering to help keep these kids in healthy, consistent living conditions. Any solutions? Thoughts?

RODRIGO ARANGUA/AFP/Getty Images Friends And Family Are Left In Shock A woman in Panama City met a tragic end when she tried to take a selfie on a balcony. According to Metro , 44-year-old Sandra Manuela Da Costa Macedo was trying to take a selfie on the 27th-floor balcony of a building last Friday. Police sources say a gust of wind must have knocked Macedo off balance and she fell to her death with her selfie stick still in hand. Nearby, construction workers filmed the whole incident, worried that Macedo would fall during her photo session. You can check out the distressing video they filmed here . Macedo, who is said to be a teacher and mom of two, had just moved to Panama City from Portugal. Friends and acquaintances posted tributes to her online when news hit of her tragic death. Erick Alzate, a witness who lives on the same block the incident took place, gave more insight into the tragedy. “She had been taking selfies for a couple of minutes and construction workers on a block opposite were shouting to her to be careful,” said Alzate. “She decided to sit on the railing for the last selfie and that’s when she went over the edge.” Many of the reactions on social media ranged from condolences to disappointment, according to Metro . One person wrote, “Rest in peace. Such a stupid way to die,” while a Jose Guillermo wrote, “Peace for her soul and strength for her family.” Maria del Carmen wrote, “Such a tragedy that such a beautiful lady like you loses their life this way. My sincere condolences for your loved ones.” After Macedo’s tragic incident, Panama’s Fire Service posted a warning on its official Twitter page which said, “Don’t risk your life for a selfie. It’s more important to lose a minute in life than your life in a minute.”

One of the first questions people had for her was concerning the jacket she wore to visit a detention center in Texas that read, “I really don’t care, do u?” Melania told ABC news that the jacket was meant to take aim at “the people and for the left-wing media who are criticizing me”. She added, “I want to show them that I don’t care. You could criticize whatever you want to say, but it will not stop me to do what I feel is right.It was kind of a message, yes. I would prefer that they would focus on what I do and on my initiatives than what I wear. It’s obvious I didn’t wear the jacket for the children. I wore the jacket to go on the plane and off the plane.” Press Secretary and Communications Director for the First Lady of the United States, Stephanie Grisham, even tweeted, Today’s visit w the children in Texas impacted @flotus greatly. Getty Images Construction workers were on site of a former funeral home in Michigan when they shockingly found 11 infant corpses hidden in the ceiling. According to the Detroit News , eight of the baby bodies were stored in a cardboard box and three were found in separate garbage bags that were stuffed into one casket. Detective Lt. Brian Bowser told reporters that state officials had received an anonymous letter in the mail Friday, informing them that the infant bodies were hidden inside. “The letter detailed the existence of human remains inside the funeral home.They were met here by the current owner who admitted them entry. They went to the location described in the letter and located a couple boxes. One box and one small casket. They were kind of hidden away. It’s just the callousness of the operators, the owners, the employees of the funeral home.” DPD Lt. Detective Brian Bowser says they recovered bodies of 11 stillborns improperly stowed in a “hidden false ceiling between the first and second floor of the funeral home” after an anonymous letter was sent to LARA Friday. @detroitnews pic.twitter.com/unqxCanety — Sarah Rahal (@SarahRahal_) October 13, 2018 However, Jameca LaJoyce Boone, the manager of Cantrell Funeral Home, told reporters, “I didn’t know anything about that,” she told The Detroit News. “I really don’t know how that could even have happened. State officials shut down the funeral home back in April after inspectors found decomposing remains and “deplorable conditions. Jaap Arriens/NurPhoto via Getty Images White Passenger Calls Cops On Black Lyft Driver For “Racial Profiling” A Trump supporter berated his Lyft driver with the N word, and has since been fired from his job after a video of the harassment went completely viral. Buckle your seatbelts for this one, y’all…. The Lyft driver, Shawn Pepas Lettman, calmly filmed the 16-minute lashing out by passenger Robert Ortiz and his two friends, who called the New York City Police after Lettman refused to turn on the radio. “I feel racially profiled … because I’m not black,” Ortiz told the 911 operator. He later adds, “If this guy does anything to threaten my life, I have to defend myself. … I’m a little fearful.” The passenger then proceeds to get the phone with Lyft. “Maybe because I’m not black … I was charged $8.01 for just asking for music,” said Ortiz, while threatening to file a lawsuit against the company. “I came out of a gay club and your driver is racist against gay people,” Ortiz rants, adding, “I know my legal rights as an American citizen that voted for Trump…” Ortiz also calls the Lyft operator, “a piece of s***.” In another video call to a friend, Ortiz uses the N word multiple times to describe Lettman. Ortiz then accuses Lettman of illegally filming him and says, “So, I’m going to make sure, while you’re recording this, that you never have a job as a Lyft driver again.” When the driver finally speaks, he points to a sign in his car that states passengers will be recorded, to which Ortiz threatens to “make your night a living hell.” Ortiz continues to dig himself into a deeper hole, yelling about, “All that Black Lives Matter is bulls***.” He calls the police again while refusing to leave the car. “I bet you if I was black — and Black Lives Matter,” he spits, “he would have put the music on. F*** Black Lives Matter — every life matters … all I asked for was music.” Following their publishing of the story, a representative from Lyft sent a statement to Yahoo Lifestyle : “The behavior exhibited in the video is deeply concerning. Lyft is committed to maintaining an inclusive and welcoming community and discriminatory behavior is unacceptable. We temporarily deactivated both passenger and driver accounts while we investigated the situation. After reviewing all sides, we reactivated Mr. Lettman’s account within hours and permanently disabled the passenger account. We have also reached out to Mr. Lettman to express our support.” Lettman explained that after he stopped recording, he called the police in fear of his own safety. “I didn’t ask for this nor did I want this,” he wrote. “I know America is better than this and despite the hate, we have to deal with from a few, my heart tells me, the world is mostly good.” On Thursday, Ortiz’s former employer, medical clinic CityMD, wrote in a Facebook comment , “This is to confirm that this individual was terminated and is no longer employed by or affiliated with CityMD in any capacity.” You can watch the video from the absolutely insane incident below.
