30 Seconds To Mars Caught In ‘Glitter Bomb’ On Way To VMAs

Best Rock Video winners found themselves strewn in glitter when arriving at the VMAs Sunday night. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars arrives at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage If anyone thought that 30 Seconds to Mars ‘ partial re-creation of their VMA-winning video, “Kings and Queens,” when they entered the big show’s white carpet would prove to be the most dangerous part of the band’s appearance on Sunday night, they were wrong. When MTV News caught up with the band as they hit the white carpet, frontman Jared Leto explained that they had not only braved L.A. traffic for their entrance, they also endured an explosion of sorts. “We were in the middle of a glitter bomb. The entrance was fun and chaotic and crazy.”

Well, if you’re a betting man (or woman), he wasn’t too shabby. Before the VMAs went down Sunday night, MTV News chatted with Richard Gardner, sportsbook manager for Bodog.com, and asked him to weigh in on which musicians would dominate at the awards show. Snoop Dogg, DPGC Reminisce About Doggystyle Before Sequel

‘ Doggystyle was another way for us to be seen and heard again,’ Snoop tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Sway Calloway Snoop Dogg Photo: Getty Images Cornerstone Credentials: Snoop Dogg and the DPGC A few days ago, Snoop Dogg announced that his next LP will be Doggystyle 2: The Doggumentary. And while the 1515 Boys can’t claim 100 percent responsibility for Don Kinging the situation, we’ll take a little credit. A couple of weeks ago, during Rock the Bells rehearsals, the big homie Sway put it in the air while talking to Snoop, Kurupt, Daz Dillinger, Lady of Rage, RBX and Warren G. When Sway asked Snoop if having his crew back together for the concerts meant getting everyone back on one album again, the Dogg said: “Nothing can stop that. The rebirth! It’s done. We’re gonna try to be out before Detox so we can help Dr. Dre speed up the process.” Having the old gang in tow sparked plenty of memories for Snoop about the original album, his debut solo classic. “The Chronic album, we felt that was our album,” Snoop thought back. “We gave Dr. Dre our full attention and our soul and devotion. Everything we wanted to say, we said. He gave us the platform to do that. So we felt that was our album. Then when Doggystyle came out, we felt like it was our record again. ‘We get to do it with Snoop and he’s gonna really involve us. He’s not gonna be like Dr. Dre and be such a perfectionist. Snoop’s gonna bring us all in the studio and Dre is gonna fine-tune it and make it sound like how it’s supposed to sound.’ A lot of records didn’t sound like they sound on the album in the beginning. Warren G brought a lot of tracks to the table that were halfway right. Dre made ’em all the way right. Same with Daz, same with other producers. … Doggystyle was another way for us to be seen and heard again. We followed that up with Tha Dogg Pound album and ‘Murder Was the Case’ soundtrack.” Snoop officially announced Swizz Beatz as a producer on the album, and the way the love was flowing with Dogg and his musical family, we’re already anticipating the DPGC as guests, just like the old days. “This is nostalgia,” Rage said. “It’s like going back to Solar Studios. Popeye’s Chicken on the corner. Eight of us sharing a three-piece meal. Smoking, drinking, fussing! Not too much fussin’. I’m beatboxing, Snoop’s rhyming. Daz rhyming. Kurupt’s rhyming. RBX. When RBX came on the set, he was like, ‘Yeah, I’m signed to Death Row.’ I was like, ‘Who said so?’ I was all defensive and sh–, like, ‘Now everybody wants to be on Death Row. Who are you?’ Little did I know.” “The battles were epic, man,” RBX offered about the siblings’ ciphers. “I used to crave that. It kept you sharp. Me watching all the old kung fu flicks, I always felt like you had to stay sharp and that was through walking through the fire. Whether it be Snoop walking through the fire and I’m judging. Kurupt walking through the fire … ” “Me, I was into eating people alive,” Kurupt jumped in. “If Dogg said get ’em, I got ’em. It’s over. Game of death.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Related Artists Snoop Dogg DPGC

Snoop Dogg Talks Being First ‘Rock Band’ Rapper

‘I’m the first hip-hop rock star,’ he tells MTV News of his eight-song pack for the video game. By Kyle Anderson, with reporting by Sway Calloway and Matt Elias Snoop Dogg Photo: MTV News Even though he has been in the hip-hop game for nearly 20 years, Snoop Dogg still manages to tear down barriers and break records this deep into his career. Now, he has set yet another precedent in hip-hop history, becoming the first rapper to provide downloadable content for “Rock Band,” the video game that allows you to jump onstage with your favorite performer. “I do it all, man,” Snoop told MTV News’ Sway at last month’s Rock the Bells Tour kickoff . “I got some downloadable content with classic songs from Doggystyle, songs like ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot.’ You’ll be able to play along to the Snoop Dogg groove in a dramatic fashion, so you can feel like you’re a member of the Snoopadelics.” In addition to “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” the eight-song pack contains the smash singles “Beautiful,” “Sensual Seduction” and “Who Am I (What’s My Name)?,” as well as deeper cuts like “Ridin’ in My Chevy,” “Snoop’s Upside Ya Head,” “Tha Shiznit” and “That’s Tha Homie.” The package will be available for $13.49 (or 1,080 Microsoft Points, if that’s your game) and will also be available for individual purchase. Snoop, who describes himself as “an OG gamer,” is a big fan of the “Rock Band” approach and is happy to be part of a new tradition. “It brings it back to life again for those who may not have heard it, or those who may not even have been around when it was out,” Snoop said of the classic tunes getting new life via “Rock Band.” “It keeps that classic material rolling. I like when they do it with Metallica and Guns N’ Roses and the Beatles back to life. They’re educating the youth on that great music that was here years ago.” As for being the first rapper to penetrate the “Rock Band” market, it’s old hat for a living legend like Snoop. “I’m the first hip-hop rock star,” he declared. “The others, they do what they do, but they don’t do what I do.” For more on “Rock Band,” check out the Multiplayer blog , updated daily. Snoop Dogg Says Katy Perry Will Appear On His Next Album

The ‘California Gurls’ pair will reunite for the upcoming Doggystyle 2: The Doggumentary. By Jayson Rodriguez Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ Getty Images Snoop Dogg is in a “let’s do it again” type of mood. The rapper announced plans to work with Katy Perry again after the pair’s “California Gurls” collaboration shot to the top of the iTunes singles chart this week. ( Perry’s album, Teenage Dream, also hit #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart this week.) “We’re trying to get together and do something on my new album … so [I’m] definitely in contact with her,” Snoop told OK! magazine about Perry. “She’s a sweet girl and I had fun making the record with her. Like I said, I’m looking forward to her being on my record as well.” The album in question is Doggystyle 2: The Doggumentary. Snoop announced he’s revisiting his classic debut album in a BubbleTweet video message sent over Swizz Beatz’s Twitter account. Snoop and Swizz were in a studio session and revealed they had recorded upwards of 18 new tracks together. “Man, this is big Snoop Dogg coming to you live from the studio somewhere,” Snoop said in the clip. “With Swizzle, and he just laced my boots up for my new record. He gave me some gangster sh–, some Crip sh–, some R&B sh–, some hip-hop sh–, some hard sh–, some mean sh–.” The Los Angeles lyricist then revealed the name of his next album before the clip cut off. Snoop’s Doggystyle was released in November 1993. The collection was produced by Dr. Dre and, along with Dre’s The Chronic, helped solidify the West Coast’s reign atop the hip-hop game. It still remains one of the best-selling debuts in hip-hop history. Last month, Snoop revisited his debut project as a part of this year’s Rock the Bells tour, which had performers playing seminal albums in their entirety. Also on the bill were Lauryn Hill ( The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill ), A Tribe Called Quest ( Midnight Marauders ), KRS-One ( Criminal Minded ), Rakim ( Paid in Full ) and the Wu-Tang Clan ( Enter the Wu-Tang [36 Chambers] ). How Rock The Bells Tour Lineup Came To Fruition

‘It’s something you see classic rock bands do,’ tour organizer Chang Weisberg says of artists like Snoop Dogg playing their entire albums. By Shaheem Reid Snoop Dogg Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images When you initially looked at this year’s Rock the Bells Tour lineup , it seemed almost too good to be true. It’s not like fans didn’t have faith in the outing’s promoters, Guerilla Union — they’ve delivered time and time again. Acts such as Nas, Rage Against the Machine, Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes and two of this year’s headliners, A Tribe Called Quest and the Wu-Tang Clan , have all stepped foot on the main stage in the previous six outings of RTB. Still, the tour this year is more than historic. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime epic, as the artists are performing their classic albums in their entireties. Slick Rick has been performing his The Great Adventures of Slick Rick, Rakim does Paid in Full, Lauryn Hill does selections from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill as well as the Fugees’ The Score. Want more? KRS-One perform Boogie Down Productions’ Criminal Minded, the Wu do Enter the 36 Chambers, Tribe do Midnight Marauders and Snoop Dogg closes it out with Doggystyle. To see all of those classics, all of those LPs, which could easily make up a Best 10 Rap Albums of All-Time list, be performed within a 12-hour span, is absolutely surreal. The tour kicked off on Saturday night in San Bernardino, and for many fans, it was like seeing the soundtrack to their lives right in front of their faces. “This is something we had thrown around for a while,” Chang Weisberg of Guerilla Union, the tour’s organizer and promoter, said last week in Los Angeles. “We’d been talking about it for awhile with the squad. It became a reality during last year’s Smoke Out [festival]. Cypress Hill did Black Sunday in it’s entirety for the Smoke Out. It went over so crazy, that was the solidifying moment when we said we’ve definitely gotta do this for Rock the Bells. We talked to managers and artists immediately, seeing if people were really into it. Any time you’re sitting around and talking about Rock the Bells, you’re talking about what these kids are dreaming about. It’s always a question, whose record is better? What’s a top five record? Who’s the top five MC? Then, when you throw it in all together and couple it with what are the most classic records of all time, it was undeniable. “It’s something you see classic rock bands do,” Chang added. “Like, you see Pink Floyd do The Wall. Or outside of the hip-hop genre, it’s something that might be a lot more common. Here, it’s an opportunity to do a whole new reign. Kids are already saying ‘we wanna see Illmatic or Paul’s Boutique. People weren’t thinking like that. As a promoter, I don’t think I’ve asked artists ‘Would you do this song?’ as opposed to ‘Would you do this whole record?’ Fortunately, we were close enough to these camps that they knew we were serious and it would be an amazing thing if we could pull it off.” Snoop Dogg, who’s the last act to perform every night on his year’s tour, says he was excited to be a part of this event. “I was a fan of KRS and Rakim and Eric B and Slick Rick. All the rappers that’s getting down before me and whatnot. I’m thinking I’m opening up for them,” Snoop, surrounded by Daz, Kurupt, Lady of Rage, DJ Battlecat, Warren G and RBX, said. “I grew up buying their records and being fans of theirs. It’s an honor to be on the same stage with them. When [Guerilla Union] asked, I said I’m rolling. They told me what it was. I said I don’t want to just get onstage and perform my album, I wanna make it an experience. I wanna bring out the theatrics to the album. Doggystyle is like a journey. I want people to see it and feel it and when they leave be like ‘We seen a movie.’ ” Snoop definitely goes hard in the paint with mini-movies, a live band and, of course, his crew from the album. Probably the most surprising act for people to see is Lauryn Hill. For the past decade, her music releases and stage appearances have been kept at a minimum. Chang says he and his company were lucky enough to have close ties with the music legend. “We were blessed in that we’ve worked with Lauryn for a number of years and we’ve stayed close with her and her camp,” he explained. “Ultimately, she’s in a space where she’s excited about music. Her children are old enough where she can hit the road comfortably. We are very fortunate she decided to do it. We always hold Lauryn as one of the best MCs of all time. It was awesome when she said she would do it. She sat with it for a while. At the end of the day, we were fortunate she agreed to do it.” As huge as the talent pool of this year’s Rock the Bells is, it originally had yet another timeless act scheduled for the tour. “The first confirmation for Rock the Bells, it’s no secret, it was Run-DMC,” Chang revealed. “We had Run-DMC doing Raising Hell. It was going to be Raising Hell at Rock the Bells. It didn’t work out, but fortunately [there were] enough other groups to pull off the vision that we felt comfortable with when we made our announcement.” Rock the Bells continued in San Francisco Sunday night, and this Saturday, the tour stops in New York. The last day of the tour is on Sunday in Washington D.C. Besides the pioneers on the main stage, the Clipse, Wiz Khalifa, Big Sean, Immortal Technique and Yelawolf are among the acts appearing on the “Paid Dues” stage. Jay-Z Is Hip-Hop’s Cash King, According To ‘Forbes’

Mogul earned $63 million over the last 12 months, according to business magazine. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z Photo: WireImage For the third time in four years, Jay-Z has been crowned the “Hip-Hop Cash King” by Forbes . The Brooklyn lyricist topped the business magazine’s annual ranking of high-rolling hip-hop stars by earning $63 million over the past 12 months, thanks to business ventures like a high-grossing tour, real estate investments and the successful Broadway production “Fela!” Jay-Z’s income more than doubled the total brought home by 2010 runner-up Diddy , who clocked in at #2 on the list with $30 million earned thanks to endorsement deals and roles in films like “Get Him to the Greek.” Akon came in third, earning $21 million from endorsement deals and his signing of Lady Gaga to his Interscope-backed label KonLive. Lil Wayne landed at the #4 spot with $20 million in earnings, most of which came through touring; the rapper’s tours last year, “I Am Music” and “America’s Most Wanted,” were the biggest hip-hop outings of 2009 . Dre. Ludacris , Snoop Dogg , Timbaland , Pharrell and Kanye West rounded out the top 10. Jay-Z has topped the Forbes list every year since its 2007 inception with one exception; in 2008, 50 Cent came in at #1 when the magazine estimated his income at more than $150 million. The G-Unit boss came in at a distant #14 this year, and he was tied with his mentor Eminem; both multi-platinum superstars raked in $8 million.
