Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Is ‘Infectious,’ Brian Wilson Says

‘I’m flattered that Snoop Dogg used our lyric on the tag,’ the Beach Boys’ co-founder says. By James Montgomery Katy Perry in her music video for “California Gurls” Photo: Capitol Records In 1965, the Beach Boys released “California Girls,” a song that would not only become one of their biggest hits, but one of the most influential rock tunes of all time too. Forty-five years later, Katy Perry dropped “California Gurls,” a song that has quickly become one of her biggest hits , but still has a ways to go in the legacy department. It may very well be on its way — at least according to legendary Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson, who, along with Mike Love, wrote the original “Girls” back in the day. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times ‘ Pop & Hiss blog , he admitted to being a fan of the song — and a little bit flattered by Perry’s updated homage. “I love her vocal. … She sounds very clear and energetic,” he said in a statement issued by his manager. “The melody is infectious, and I’m flattered that Snoop Dogg used our lyric on the tag. I wish them well with this cut.” Of course, as Pop & Hiss points out, Perry and Snoop probably don’t need Wilson’s well-wishes (though they no doubt appreciate them). After all, “Gurls” is currently spending its sixth week atop the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart — it also tops the brand-new Songs of the Summer chart too — and has already sold more than 2.6 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. So far, Perry has remained mum on Wilson’s praise (she’s basically been tweeting about “Inception” nonstop), and a spokesperson for her label, Capitol, did not respond to MTV News’ request for comment by press time. From Lady Gaga To Chris Brown, Top Larry King Moments

T.I., the Jonas Brothers, Snoop Dogg helped legendary host maintain his pop culture credentials. By Kyle Anderson Chris Brown on “Larry King Live” Photo: CNN After 25 years on one of the most venerable and popular talk shows on television, Larry King is stepping down as the host of “Larry King Live.” The 76-year-old King announced on Tuesday that his run as cable’s premiere prime-time interrogator will come to a close sometime this fall. “I’m incredibly proud that we recently made the ‘Guinness Book of World Records’ for having the longest-running show with the same host in the same time slot,” King wrote on his blog. “With this chapter closing I’m looking forward to the future and what my next chapter will bring, but for now it’s time to hang up my nightly suspenders.” Though his advanced age has made him the butt of more than a few jokes in recent years, King’s pop culture credentials have actually been pretty strong lately. Though his show is typically devoted to politicians, newsmakers, activists and victims of heinous crimes, he has spent more and more time chatting with a new generation of pop stars and artists. In the process, he has turned “Larry King Live” into its own headline-grabbing broadcast, bringing a handful of artists out of their respective shells. Take a look at the five most notable exchanges that King has had with the current generation of pop stars for proof. Chris Brown In a history-making piece of television, Chris Brown sat down for an interview on “Larry King Live” back in September 2009. It represented his first public comments since his arrest for assaulting then girlfriend Rihanna the previous February. Flanked by his mother and his lawyer and dressed in a blue bow tie, Brown was quiet and somewhat evasive but remorseful during the hour-long sit-down. “I made a mistake and that’s just something I have to live up to and own up to,” Brown told King. “And change and become a better person.” Lady Gaga King’s most recent brush with the pop world was an interview he conducted via satellite with Lady Gaga , who not only talked about her upcoming music, her role in the gay community and her struggles with lupus, but who also unveiled a preview of her new video for “Alejandro.” T.I. Fresh out of jail, Clifford “T.I.” Harris sat across the desk from King back in May for a surprisingly hard-hitting conversation about his year behind bars and the crime that put him there. Tip was candid about everything. “In having time to sit and reflect, if you take the time and use it to your advantage, you see [that] even though all those rounds were fired that night, you didn’t have a firearm and you’re still here,” he told King. The Jonas Brothers While they weren’t discussing their time in prison, their role in the gay community or domestic disputes, the Jonas Brothers’ appearance on King’s show in June 2009 was no less noteworthy. When King pressed the boys to discuss their love lives, Joe mentioned that his then flame (actress Camilla Belle) was not as public as Nick’s girlfriend. “I don’t think anybody is as famous as Miley Cyrus,” he said, confirming rumors that had been flying around for a while. Snoop Dogg While Snoop Dogg’s appearance on King’s show didn’t reveal any hard-hitting facts, it did give King the opportunity to roll with the Dogg. Back in March, the pair hopped into Snoop’s 1967 Pontiac Parisienne, for a ride during which Snoop showed off the GPS that featured his own voice and taught King all about low ridin’. Katy Perry Explains ‘California Gurls’ Video, Frame By Frame

Pop star puts a ‘naughty twist’ on Candy Land for the new clip. By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry In ‘California Gurls’ Video Photo: Capitol Katy Perry released her pastel-colored, candy-coated new video for “California Gurls” on Tuesday (June 15). In the clip, Perry is dressed in little or nothing and trounces around Candyfornia trying to save her California Gurls from Snoop Dogg’s Sugar Daddy and his Gummi Bear minions. Of course, with the help of some smooth dance moves and a whipped-cream-dispensing bra, the ladies dethrone the evil ruler. Perry sat down with MTV News to walk fans through the behind-the-scenes action. “I like the idea of this being like a board game,” she said. “It’s kind of like Candy Land. That was probably one of my favorite games to play growing up. I like to bring back those pure childhood moments and give them a little bit of a naughty twist, of course!” In the video, Katy travels through Candyfornia, trying to save her pals. “One of the first girls that I rescue out of the music video, one of the first California Gurls, is a girl that we’ve named Bubblicious Betty, and she’s caught in a bubble that Snoop Dogg has put her in from the Bubblicious volcano. “I continue on through Candyfornia,” she added. “I get caught in the candy-cane snake place, where it gets really dicey. I don’t know which tree stalk to climb so that I can get to the cotton-candy clouds.” The video’s elaborate set design gave Perry and her team the chance to really use their imaginations. “It was really exciting doing all of the set production,” she said. “We took over this huge movie set, basically, and we built the gingerbread house, and it has hearts and pink and color. I think it’s got so much color in it.” Of course, the video also has clothes that manage to dazzle the senses as well. “Diesel made me those shorts, which is really cool,” she said. “They bedazzled the Daisy Dukes. And then, of course, towards the end, after I have picked out all of the California Gurls that have been frozen in Candyfornia because Snoop is the evil Mister Oz-like figure, we go to his sugar castle on sugarcane beach, and we tell him who’s boss.” Having Snoop play the bad guy was one of the genius ideas that went into making this video, as was the popsicle that meets a sad end. “I was talking to the director when Snoop was doing his verse, [and] I was like, ‘I really want there to be a melting-popsicle guy,’ ” she revealed. “I just love stuff like that. I think I belong in Japan, in some alternate universe. I think this music video is a little bit my love for all things cute, confectionary and Japanese [and] childhood.” When fans watch the video, two looks will stand out: the cupcake bra and the chest-mounted frosting cannons. “I will tell you that those cupcake bra boobies, they were a little bit heavy and they were interesting,” she said. “It was really fun making these costumes. They’re all one-of-a-kind, and I love the Bettie Page moment in the red and the whipped-cream cans.” So how does it end? Well, Katy wins, of course. “I had the idea for the end shot,” she said. “I want Snoop to be covered in sand like we beat him!” What do you think of the “California Gurls” video?
