Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Video: So Sweet It Hurts

The queen of ‘Candyfornia’ battles Snoop Dogg in a cavity-inducing fantasy world. By James Montgomery Katy Perry in “California Gurls” Photo: Capitol As if the electric-blue wig , bedazzled bikini and chest-mounted frosting cannons didn’t give it away, let me be the first to tell you that Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” video is just slightly over-the-top. Like, all the way over it … with whipped cream and cherry on top. Yes, the “Gurls” video — which premiered Tuesday (June 15) on MTV.com — is three minutes and 54 seconds of deliciously gaudy, delightfully ridiculous eye candy, a sugar-coated overload of confectionery gone haywire, cotton-candy clouds, gingerbread paths and Gummi Bears with bad attitudes. It is bright and brash and very likely to give you a toothache. Like the song, there is nothing understated about it. Directed by Mathew Cullen of the creative group known as Motion Theory, “California Gurls” re-imagines the Golden State as “Candyfornia,” a magical, cavity-inducing land where Sunset Boulevard becomes “Sundae Blvd” and the Hollywood sign rests on a whipped-cream mountain (the iconic Capitol Records building is also slyly inserted, constructed entirely of what appear to be vanilla wafers). Perry is the queen, parading down pastoral candy landscapes (which resemble the surrealist, saccharine work of artist Will Cotton , if you want to get deep about it). All appears to be well until Snoop Dogg — who plays the evil Sugar Daddy — begins to pull strings, in an attempt to wrest control of Candyfornia away from Queen Katy. From there, we have a battle between good and evil, as Perry attempts to free her Candyfornia cohorts from a variety of sweet traps (bubblegum, Jell-O, etc.) while Snoop readies his army of loyal Gummi Bears for the final showdown. Of course, there’s also time for KP to ascend into the heavens, strip naked, suggestively nibble cotton candy and perform a dance routine with her Gurls — because what kind of pop video would this be if there weren’t? Eventually, she climbs to Snoop’s castle to do battle, vanquishing him and his minions by firing frosting from her chest, in a scene that plays out in gratuitous slow-motion, basically for the heck of it. And then, at the clip’s end, Snoop is buried up to his neck in sand, surrounded by Perry and her Gurls. Not surprisingly, everything ends happily ever after … the Queen of Candyfornia is returned to her throne, the evil Sugar Daddy is banished, and dentists around the world rejoice, dreaming of the business this super-saccharine video will surely create. Brush twice a day, kids. What do you think of the new “California Gurls” video? Share your reviews in the comments. Related Artists Katy Perry Snoop Dogg

Lakers Fan Snoop Dogg Challenges Donnie Wahlberg Over NBA Championships

Big Snoop Dogg pledges $20,000 to winner’s favorite charity. By Mawuse Ziegbe Snoop Dogg Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage No one can say Snoop Dogg doesn’t go hard for his city. Although his beloved Los Angeles Lakers currently are down 3 games to 2 against the Boston Celtics in the NBA finals, Snoop has taken to the Internet to voice his support for the Cali team in the NBA finals. He’s even taken on boy-bander and hard-core Boston fan Donnie Wahlberg and challenged the Celtics supporter to a bet over which team will take home the trophy. Snoop lays down the gauntlet in a video posted on his website , calling out Wahlberg and offering $20,000 to the charity of the winner’s choice. “What it do, Big Snoop Dogg, Lakers fan #1. Wahlberg what it do? Y’all want that bet? Let’s get it crackin’,” said Snoop. “20 Gs to your favorite charity, Lakers beat the Celtics, that’s what it do!” Comedian Mike Epps also repped for the Lakers and went at Beantown fans in the video. “Boston, y’all ain’t got nothin’ on ’em,” Epps jeered. “That cabbage green ain’t got sh– on that banana yellow, bitch!” Snoop ropes in Donnie’s brother Mark Wahlberg and Ultimate Fighting Championship president Dana White as well in another online video where he demands “I need some free UFC tickets to all the upcoming fights and I need to be on ‘Entourage,’ I need to get in a movie with you, Marky Mark.” The Doggfather and the New Kids on the Block singer also have been going at it on Twitter. After putting up the $20,000 wager, Snoop upped the stakes, tweeting to @DonnieWahlberg, “Letz turn thiz up. Loser has to wear the winners colors for a week too!” For his part, Wahlberg isn’t taking Snoop’s taunts lying down. “Question @snoopdogg how bout we add one more wrinkle to this bet…? Win or Lose we exchange check on stage @ Radio City Stage June 20th?” Wahlberg tweeted on Friday. “I’ll pay for the flight, rooms & expense. The loser steps on stage in the other [team’s] jersey to hand over the check!” New Kids on the Block is set to perform at New York’s Radio City Music Hall June 17 through June 19. But after the Celtics beat the Lakers in Game 5 on Sunday, Snoop Dogg kept it gentlemanly, tweeting , “Aight @donniewahlberg congrats green came strong but we goin 7 games!” Wahlberg graciously accepted the props and gave Snoop a friendly tip about how the Lakers could take it all. “Thanks for the congrats @snoopdogg! I think it could go 7 but somebody, besides KOBE, needs to step up for LA or we will win it all in 6!” Related Artists Snoop Dogg

Rock The Bells Lineup Adds Snoop Dogg, A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Premier

Lauryn Hill will perform her classic debut, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, on three tour stops. By Jayson Rodriguez Snoop Dogg Photo: Daniel Boczarski/ Redferns Snoop Dogg, A Tribe Called Quest and DJ Premier have been added to the 2010 Rock the Bells bill , joining a lineup that already includes such legendary acts as the Wu-Tang Clan, Rakim, KRS-One, and Slick Rick. As part of a novel concept this year, all of the participants will perform one seminal album from their catalog in its entirety, with the exception of Premier, who will instead lead a tribute to his late Gangstarr music partner, Guru . (The MC died in April of cancer-related causes.) Also joining the festivities is Lauryn Hill. The former Fugees frontwoman was announced as a “special guest” last month, but Hill’s involvement in the show was clarified on Tuesday (June 8). Hill is slated to perform her now-classic debut album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The singer will be featured on the Los Angeles, New York and Washington, D.C. legs of the four-city trek. The Rock the Bells Tour spans four U.S. cities, kicking off on August 21 at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, California, then making stops at the Shoreline Amphitheater outside San Francisco on August 22, Governors Island in New York on August 28 and closing at Merriweather Post Pavilion, in the D.C. area, on August 29. Among the albums set to be performed from start to finish are Snoop’s Doggystyle, ATCQ’s Midnight Marauders, the Wu’s Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and KRS-One and Boogie Down Production’s Criminal Minded. Slick Rick’s The Great Adventures of Slick Rick and Eric B. and Rakim’s Paid in Full will also get a full performance. “That’s gonna be interesting to see these cats do some of the records that really bust hip-hop’s cherry open,” Raekwon told MTV News about the concept earlier this month. “I can’t wait to see this because I never seen it like that before. The concept is great. It gives fans the opportunity to go back and rewrite their history, go back and check it out, see what made dudes who they are. … This [tour] is gonna allow races to come together and have fun for one night. This is gonna be the event of events. This is gonna be the Royal Rumble of hip-hop. I’m sure that everybody is gonna come out and represent this. It’s gonna be right. I can’t wait.” Also filling out the bill are Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello’s side project with the Coup’s Boots Riley, Street Sweeper Social Club, as well as Murs & 9th Wonder, Wiz Khalifa, the Clipse, Immortal Technique, Brother Ali, Jedi Mind Tricks, Supernatural, DJ Muggs with Ill Bill, Big Sean, Yelawolf and DJ Rocky Rock. If you could choose any hip-hop act to perform their album in its entirety, who would you pick and which album? Tell us in the comments! Related Artists Snoop Dogg A Tribe Called Quest DJ Premier

Snoop Dogg, Ciara, David Beckham Drop Into ‘Star Wars’ Cantina For World Cup Ad

Noel Gallagher, Daft Punk and actor Jay Baruchel also mingle with aliens for Adidas commercial. By Gil Kaufman Snoop Dogg launches the Adidas Originals X Star Wars Collection in New York City Photo: Neilson Barnard/ Getty Images The Mos Eisley Cantina has always been a supremely freaky place to hang out. The dusty bar featured in the original “Star Wars” movie was populated with a universe of oddballs, from triangle-headed Hem Dazon, to four-eyed Muftak, fish faced Greedo, fly-like Ponda Baba and long-necked Hammerhead. But things get even weirder in a new Adidas ad timed to coincide with the upcoming kick-off of soccer’s World Cup. In the new ad, a universe of famous faces mixes in with the misfits jamming out to the music of Figrin D’an and the Modal Nodes. Fitting right in, French techno duo Daft Punk are the first modern touches, strolling into the fray wearing their signature silver-and-gold space helmets and black jumpsuits, pushing past R2D2 and C3-PO as they enter the bar. Among the first faces they spot, chilling in a booth just behind Hammerhead, are former Stone Roses singer Ian Brown and his pal, Oasis co-founder Noel Gallagher, who looked bemused to be hanging out with creatures who party harder than they do. The ad makes use of the original footage, including the bit where weary-faced human bartender Wuher grumbles, “Hey, we don’t serve their kind here,” a barb intended for the two droids, though it could just as well refer to the Daft Punk duo. “Your droids, they’ll have to wait outside.” After the Punkers look R2 and 3PO up and down, 3PO says, “I heartily agree with you sir.” Actor Jay Baruchel (“She’s Out of My League”) is then spotted, hanging out and joking with some aliens before the Daft Punks sit down with Han Solo to discuss some business. Their conversation is interrupted, however, when Snoop Dogg waltzes in and snaps his fingers at the bartender. He demands a drink, as Ciara chills across the bar with a pal. When Ponda Baba gives the Doggfather some attitude, the rapper snaps, “What’s your problem?” Mush-faced surgeon Dr. Cornelius Evazan then utters his famous line, “He doesn’t like you.” “I don’t like him,” Snoop snaps back, before Obi-Wan Kenobi counsels the doctor, “This little one’s not worth the effort.” “I don’t like you either,” the not-so-good doctor replies. “Well, I don’t like you either, fool!” Snoop says, before taking out his light saber and slicing off Ponda’s arm, which nets Baruchel a blaster that he clearly doesn’t know how to handle safely. Finally, injured soccer star David Beckham makes his grand entrance, taking the place of Solo and coming face-to-face with a pistol-packing Greedo, who demands to know when he will play again. “Jabba wants to make you an offer to play for his team,” Greedo says, before he’s accidentally blasted by a butter-fingered Baruchel. Beckham walks away, hands held up, saying, “It wasn’t me.” What do you think of this star-studded “Star Wars” spoof? Do you have other favorite World Cup ads? Talk about it in the comments. Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Video — Catch A Sneak Peek!

Summer-jam clip is sweet : Snoop Dogg, cupcake bikini tops, candy-cane trees and more. By James Montgomery Katy Perry in “California Gurls” Photo: Capitol Katy Perry better be careful … all that frosting isn’t safe for the summer months. Yes, ever since she debuted “California Gurls” — with a Tweet that declared “SUMMER STARTS NOW!” — we’ve been waiting for Perry to reveal the video for the song. Something we assumed would be beachy, breezy and beautiful. Boy, we couldn’t have been more wrong. On Sunday (June 6), during the pre-show of the 2010 MTV Movie Awards , we got our first look at the “California Gurls” vid (the full-length version is scheduled to premiere June 15 on MTV), and, wow … there’s a whole lot of confectionary in the clip. The preview opens with Snoop Dogg guiding a miniaturized version of Katy through what looks very much like a version of the “Candy Land” board game, complete with gingerbread walkways, marshmallow clouds and candy-cane trees. Perry wanders about scooping up sweets while Snoop looks on from above. Oh, and then there’s the dance sequence, which sees Perry and a troop of candy-colored dancers performing moves while wearing little more than daisy dukes cutoffs (hey, just like in the song!) and bikini tops made out of cupcakes. Yeah, it’s pretty sweet, though, we’re not sure baked goods are exactly beach-approved. At the end of the preview, we see Perry wearing another bikini top, this one equipped with a pair of cannons that launch frosting at the camera. (Perhaps she’s channeling her inner Murakami .) Seriously, the 15th can’t come soon enough — it’s going to be a long, hot summer indeed! What do you think of this peek at Katy’s “California Gurls” video? Tell us in the comments! Snoop Dogg wields a lightsaber in new World Cup ad

It's World Cup massive budget advert time and that can only mean one thing: celebrities with barely anything do with football pimping the beautiful game for bags of cash. Adidas' latest ad boasts Noel Gallagher and Ian Brown mucking around like kids in the back of a classroom, Snoop Dogg showing off how badizzle he is with a lightsaber, Daft Punk shooting the breeze with Han Solo and David Beckham displaying some suprisingly funny acting. Frankly, it's brilliant. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Zd_khk6zXo added by: richjm

Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’ Rules iTunes Singles Chart

The latest ‘Glee’ soundtrack has a lock on the site’s albums chart. By Gil Kaufman Katy Perry Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/ WireImage Though she lost out to Lady Gaga in MTV News’ summer jam 2010 poll , Katy Perry is still off to a pretty good start of the season. With the help of Snoop Dogg , the singer has notched a #1 on the iTunes singles chart for the week ending Monday (May 31) with her song of the summer contender, “California Gurls.” The top of the list, frankly, looks like a who’s who of our summer jam nominees, with B.o.B ‘s “Airplanes” coming in at #2, followed by Usher ‘s “OMG,” Ke$ha ‘s “Your Love Is My Drug,” Eminem ‘s “Not Afraid” and the actual hottest summer jam, Lady Gaga ‘s “Alejandro,” as voted on by MTV.com readers. The rest of the iTunes single chart is rounded out by La Roux ‘s “Bulletproof,” the “Glee” cast cover of Gaga’s “Poker Face,” Travie McCoy ‘s “Billionaire” and Taio Cruz ‘s “Break Your Heart.” Though iTunes does not release sales figures, the picture at the top of the site’s albums chart should be familiar to anyone who saw last week’s Billboard 200 chart, since it’s topped by the third volume of jazz-hands-worthy covers from the “Glee” crew, Glee: The Music, Vol. 3 Showstoppers. Just behind are reunited glam rock survivors Stone Temple Pilots, whose self-titled comeback album will likely top next week’s Billboard tally. Gaga hangs tough at #3 with The Fame ; followed by the Black Keys ‘ Brothers ; the “Sex and the City 2” soundtrack; B.o.B.’s debut, B.o.B. Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray and yet another “Glee” compilation, Glee: The Music, Journey to Regionals. The list is rounded out by Distant Relatives, the full album collaboration between rapper Nas and reggae scion Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley , LCD Soundsystem ‘s This Is Happening and Lady Antebellum ‘s Need You Now. Snoop Dogg, Kid Cudi Join Forces For ‘That Tree’ Video

Dressed like Cheech and Chong, the rappers get goofy in their ode to evergreens. By James Montgomery Snoop Dogg and Kid Cudi in “That Tree” Photo: Capitol Records Great minds think alike. So, when Snoop Dogg and Kid Cudi — two men who share an affinity for, shall we say, herbal remedies — get together on a track called “That Tree,” it’s a pretty safe bet neither of them were thinking about conifers. If they were thinking at all. “Tree,” a new cut off the reissue of Snoop’s Malice in Wonderland album, isn’t about forestry at all. It’s a classic stoner jam, a light ‘n breezy ode to the sticky green stuff, featuring a hazy, loping beat courtesy of Diplo. The accompanying just-released video is appropriately laconic and bedheaded. Directed by Erick Peyton, the clip for “That Tree” is basically a four-minute stoner comedy, featuring brightly colored, slightly goofy set pieces like dancing two-dimensional trees, women dressed as lumberjacks and a big, shiny sun. You know, the kind of stuff that looks like it was lifted from some smoked-out dude’s dreams. It’s a sly interpretation, made even more impressive when you realize that Snoop and Cudi are actually dressed like Cheech and Chong, circa “Up in Smoke” (no word on if their van is made entirely of weed). And, much like all great stoner comedies, there’s (sort of) a plotline involving the accidental ingestion of pot, a misplaced vehicle and a deer. Or something like that. These things tend to make more sense when you’re baked. The video is also amazing because it’s the kind of thing you usually don’t see from Snoop: It’s goofy and good-natured. In the past, even when he was being positively ridiculous (like, for example, his VHS-ified video for “Sensual Seduction”), there was a snarl to his performances, a bit of the braggadocio. In “Trees,” he seems content to just grin and watch the world drift by. And he looks like he’s having a blast doing it. And, really, who can blame him? Never underestimate the power of the trees, after all. Related Videos Snoop Dogg’s ‘That Tree’ Video Premieres Related Artists Snoop Dogg Kid Cudi
