Snoop Dogg, Kid Cudi Join Forces For ‘That Tree’ Video

Dressed like Cheech and Chong, the rappers get goofy in their ode to evergreens. By James Montgomery Snoop Dogg and Kid Cudi in “That Tree” Photo: Capitol Records Great minds think alike. So, when Snoop Dogg and Kid Cudi — two men who share an affinity for, shall we say, herbal remedies — get together on a track called “That Tree,” it’s a pretty safe bet neither of them were thinking about conifers. If they were thinking at all. “Tree,” a new cut off the reissue of Snoop’s Malice in Wonderland album, isn’t about forestry at all. It’s a classic stoner jam, a light ‘n breezy ode to the sticky green stuff, featuring a hazy, loping beat courtesy of Diplo. The accompanying just-released video is appropriately laconic and bedheaded. Directed by Erick Peyton, the clip for “That Tree” is basically a four-minute stoner comedy, featuring brightly colored, slightly goofy set pieces like dancing two-dimensional trees, women dressed as lumberjacks and a big, shiny sun. You know, the kind of stuff that looks like it was lifted from some smoked-out dude’s dreams. It’s a sly interpretation, made even more impressive when you realize that Snoop and Cudi are actually dressed like Cheech and Chong, circa “Up in Smoke” (no word on if their van is made entirely of weed). And, much like all great stoner comedies, there’s (sort of) a plotline involving the accidental ingestion of pot, a misplaced vehicle and a deer. Or something like that. These things tend to make more sense when you’re baked. The video is also amazing because it’s the kind of thing you usually don’t see from Snoop: It’s goofy and good-natured. In the past, even when he was being positively ridiculous (like, for example, his VHS-ified video for “Sensual Seduction”), there was a snarl to his performances, a bit of the braggadocio. In “Trees,” he seems content to just grin and watch the world drift by. And he looks like he’s having a blast doing it. And, really, who can blame him? Never underestimate the power of the trees, after all. Related Videos Snoop Dogg’s ‘That Tree’ Video Premieres Related Artists Snoop Dogg Kid Cudi

Snoop Dogg Has ‘No Problem’ With Competition From Justin Bieber

Bieber’s My World 2.0 and Snoop’s More Malice both drop on Tuesday. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Matt Elias Snoop Dogg Photo: MTV News Tuesday (March 23) marks not only the release of Justin Bieber’s My World 2.0, but the drop of Snoop Dogg’s More Malice, a reissue of an earlier album with a fresh collection of tracks. So, is Snoop stressing about going head-to-head with the platinum-selling 16-year-old? Not a chance, the rapper told MTV News on Monday night at the red carpet for the premiere of “Malice N Wonderland,” the 40-minute movie made in conjunction with the new disc. “I don’t have no problem with that,” he said. “That’s what the music industry was made on. I actually had a chance to meet the guy. He’s kind of cool. So, I don’t really have a problem with the teenyboppers or whatnot.” To Snoop, this is sort of a case of been there, done that. His mixtapes began to get noticed in his teenage years, and after hooking up with Dr. Dre, Snoop delivered his debut album, Doggystyle, at the age of 22. “Once upon a time, I was a young teenager coming into the game, driving ’em crazy and whatnot,” he explained. Wise after all these years — and with his 11th studio album set for release — Snoop sees more than enough room in the marketplace for both gentlemen to succeed. “I wish him luck and success,” he said of Bieber. “Hopefully, his record will do what it’s supposed to do.” For his part, Bieber’s been working like a madman to promote the album, traveling nonstop and talking to the press at every turn. His first single, “Baby,” had a top 5 Billboard debut and he has high hopes for the next single, “U Smile.” “The song is amazing,” Bieber told MTV News recently. “We really love the song, so we decided to cut it. It’s really amazing.” Will you be buying Snoop’s or Justin Bieber’s new album today? Let us know in the comments below, and post your video reviews on Your.MTV.com ! Snoop Dogg Plans ‘Music, Comedy’ Tour With Mike Epps

‘I had to find somebody who I could match and who could match me,’ MC says of his comedian co-headliner. By Shaheem Reid Snoop Dogg Photo: MTV News LL Cool J went from Hollis to Hollywood, and Snoop Dogg plans to take it from Long Beach To Las Vegas. The hip-hop legend starts a tour of Casinos on April 30 in San Diego along with co-headliner Mike Epps. The Dogg says the two performers’ worlds will combine well onstage. “Mike Epps is exceptional,” Snoop said. “He’s the equivalent to Snoop Dogg in comedy. People love him. They respect his comedy, his views, his vision. He’s not too political, he’s not too raunchy. He’s not too offensive. When you say Mike Epps, people laugh. They smile. They associate him with funny. When you say Snoop Dogg, people get excited and start singing songs and thinking about certain moments in time when certain records took them to the next day. I had to find somebody who I could match and who could match me as far as putting my show with his show and making our show — a show of all shows that people could talk about for years.” Snoop noted that he and Epps share a lot of the same loves and influences in comedy and music. “We both love the same things: Flip Wilson, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson — we was trying to figure out how could those worlds come together and make people enjoy themselves. So we sat down, spent a couple of days together and shot out a couple of ideas. We said, ‘Me and you onstage together is great, but if we’re onstage together and doing a real show, where we’re interacting with a big screen, where it’s movie scenes we shot beforehand, where it intercuts onstage live — music, comedy — it’ll just be a great show.’ The way we putting it together, we’ll be in Vegas one day getting paper. Snoop Dogg And Kid Cudi Collaborate On ‘That Tree’

‘I did some more work on it and that’s why it’s just coming out now,’ producer Diplo says of track. By Hillary Crosley Snoop Dogg Photo: Frank Micelotta/Getty Images Snoop Dogg just released his Malice N Wonderland album late last year, but that’s not stopping the West Coast MC from teaming up with Kid Cudi and hipster producer Diplo for his new single “That Tree” for his follow-up LP More Malice. The album is slated to hit shelves on March 23. The track is a trippy mix of descending drum rolls as Snoop comically rhymes “groupies on my head like a kufi” until Kid Cudi’s voice begins the melodious hook. “Everything I’m having no it ain’t necessity/ Though I’m shining, keep on grinding/ What you see ain’t all of me,” Cudi sings over organs. As enjoyable as the song is, Diplo, the cut’s producer (who has also worked with M.I.A. and Santigold), had no idea the two rappers were even recording the track. “I’ve known Snoop’s manager Ted Chung for a while and I actually met Snoop through the Swedish singer Robyn at the Grammys last year,” Diplo recalled. “We exchanged information because he’d heard of me and I kept in touch. When Ted came around asking for beats, I didn’t have any so I gave him some small loops and Ted actually just looped the loops over again.” Diplo never heard anything more about the beats until late one night during another recording session with Kid Cudi. “Cudi was like, ‘I just did a track with Snoop over your beat.’ And I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ ” Diplo told MTV News. “I had no idea that Ted had taken the small loops and they’d rapped on it, so Ted eventually sent me back a vocal and I kind of constructed a track around that.” Unfortunately, “That Tree” did not make the track listing for Malice N Wonderland. “It didn’t make that album because of deadlines and it wasn’t in the right shape,” Diplo said. “But they liked the track and really wanted to use it, so I did some more work on it and that’s why it’s just coming out now.” Related Artists Snoop Dogg Kid Cudi
