Linkin Park Take Guitars To New Places On A Thousand Suns

‘We sampled them and played them like you would make a hip-hop song,’ Mike Shinoda explains. By James Montgomery Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda Photo: MTV News Depending on which side of the great A Thousand Suns debate you stand, Linkin Park ‘s use of guitars on the album (or, more specifically, the general lack of them) is either a brilliant, ballsy move or a total letdown. After all, LP’s near-trademark guitar tone — something between a rocket-launcher and a firework, explosive, arching and incendiary — was a big part of what made them one of the hugest rock acts on the planet, and on Suns, it’s largely absent, replaced instead with a myriad of effects-laden squelches and rumblings. How you feel about that fact will affect how you feel about the album itself. And, yes, Linkin Park are aware of that — they’ve been following the debate rather closely, in fact. “I heard a lot of comments about how certain songs on the record … fans were hearing them and going, ‘Wow, those are so heavy!’ and I even caught people talking about guitar on a song like ‘Wretches and Kings,’ for example, and somebody else would call them out, be like, ‘Actually, I don’t even think that’s guitar. I think it’s some kind of sample or something,’ ” LP’s Mike Shinoda told MTV News. “We’ve been getting a lot of questions on that. Our approach on that stuff has been really something different for us. We didn’t just plug the PRS [guitar] into the Mesa amp; it was like, we played these guitars through all these different effects, and we put them in the computer and we sampled them and played them like you would make a hip-hop song.” And those new sonic ideas — while alienating to some — were also the key building blocks to A Thousand Suns. Linkin Park knew they were taking a risk, but in the end, it was worth it. After all, they’ve walked away with perhaps the first major-label rock record in recent memory that doesn’t sound like a major-label thing. Or really, a rock record, for that matter. “Loosening that process up really enabled us to make some sounds that felt really fresh to us,” Shinoda said. “And [it] made the songs better.” What do you think of Linkin Park’s new sound? ‘Social Network’ Star Jesse Eisenberg Is Immune To Movie’s Buzz

As he dives into other projects, Eisenberg hasn’t paid attention to anticipation for this fall’s Facebook flick. By Eric Ditzian Jesse Eisenberg and Joseph Mazzello in “The Social Network” Photo: Sony Pictures Jesse Eisenberg doesn’t have a lot of free time at the moment. He’s holed up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, filming the action/comedy “30 Minutes or Less,” and when he’s not on set — as happened on a recent Sunday evening — he’s often writing term papers as part of the undergraduate anthropology degree he’s pursuing.

Selena Gomez, T-Pain, Lady Antebellum, Salt-N-Pepa also set for Las Vegas show on October 23. By Gil Kaufman Justin Timberlake Photo: Dimitrios Kambouris/ FilmMagic Justin Timberlake always lines up a star-studded roster for his annual Justin Timberlake and Friends benefit concert in support of the Shriners Hospitals for Children, and this year’s roster is no exception. The October 23 show at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino’s Theatre for the Performing Arts in Las Vegas will feature pal Christina Aguilera, Lady Antebellum, Diddy and his Dirty Money crew , Selena Gomez & the Scene, T-Pain, hip-hop icons Salt-N-Pepa and one of the bands signed to JT’s Tennman Records label, FreeSol. JT will, of course, perform at the show as well in his only official concert appearance of the year. Tickets for the show go on sale on August 21 and range from $100 to $350. Last year’s benefit featured appearances by Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys, Taylor Swift, Ciara and TLC. The event will again be accompanied by the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open golf tournament, which will take place at the TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas from October 21 to October 24. With a purse of more than $4 million, the tournament will feature 132 PGA tour professionals. Though Timberlake has been lying relatively low on the music scene over the past year, he’s been working hard on the acting side, signing up to portray a “singing booger” on the “Family Guy” spin-off “The Cleveland Show” , filming the flick “Friends With Benefits” with Mila Kunis in New York and hitting theaters soon in the David Fincher-helmed movie “The Social Network,” in which he plays Napster co-founder Sean Parker, who also had a hand in the launch of the social-media phenomenon Facebook. Trent Reznor To Score Facebook Movie

Nine Inch Nails frontman will collaborate on soundtrack to David Fincher’s ‘The Social Network.’ By Gil Kaufman Trent Reznor Photo: Sean Gardner/ Getty Images Although he claimed he was putting Nine Inch Nails in the deep-freeze , frontman Trent Reznor is not fading into the distance. The leader of the legendary industrial powerhouse has recorded the soundtrack to the upcoming David Fincher (“Fight Club”) movie “The Social Network,” which tells the story of how Facebook was created. “I was planning on taking some time off after the continual waves of touring that ended last fall and spend this year experimenting around with what would become How To Destroy Angels and some new NIN,” Reznor wrote on the Nine Inch Nails website , referring to HTDA, the band he started with his wife, Mariqueen Maandig. “Well, that plan didn’t work out so well. David Fincher started inquiring about my interest in scoring his upcoming film, ‘The Social Network.’ Yeah, the movie about the founding of Facebook. I’ve always loved David’s work but quite honestly I wondered what would draw him to tell that story.” Then Reznor, who has had an up-and-down/love-hate relationship with social networking sites, said he read the script for the movie. “When I actually read the script and realized what he was up to, I said goodbye to that free time I had planned,” he explained. “Atticus Ross and I have been on a creative roll, so I asked him if he wanted to work on this with me and we signed on,” Reznor said of composer/producer Ross, a frequent NIN collaborator. “Months later, I’m happy to tell you we’re nearing the completion of this and I couldn’t be happier with how it’s turned out. The level of excellence that David operates on is inspiring and the entire process has been challenging and truly enjoyable.” He project, or two, in time for the film’s October 1 opening. Reznor said he expects the album to be available several weeks before the movie’s release, which, he noted, is “really f—ing good. And dark!” While Reznor has contributed songs to soundtracks before, including David Lynch’s “Lost Highway,” this is the first time he’s committed to recording an entire soundtrack. “The Social Network” tracks the rise of Facebook, from its inception in 2004 on the Harvard University campus, and stars Jessie Eisenberg, Justin Timberlake and Rashida Jones. Are you excited to be getting Nine Inch Nails music in the form of Reznor’s upcoming soundtrack? And when you think of Facebook, do you think NIN? Tell us what you think in the comments!
