With Father’s Day coming up Sunday we’re happy to see some great projects about Black Dads ! Created by Sabrina Thompson of KUU photography, the Social Series is a set of responsible online campaigns that promote positive imagery. The goal of the series is for KUU to capture dynamic images and request that people around the world use social media too flood cyber space with these inspirational images within a designated time window in order to combat the negative aspects of media. The first edition of the Social Series is titled ” Farherhood is…” (Photographer and runner-up of SURVIVOR on CBS, Sabrina Thompson, knows how media rarely reflects good images of Black men and fathers. Instead of complaining, she gathered more than fifty fathers who were nominated by their peers and took candid portraits of them interacting with their kids. “We have to step up and provide great images for society to absorb or else all they will see are dismal images. So why not equip society with images and have them bombard the world with uplifting images via social media? It is our duty, not an option, to act responsibly.” The campaign launched on June 10th leading into Father’s Day and has already reached over 15,000 people in cyber space. Black fathers can join the campaign by tweeting a picture of them and their kids to @thesocialseries (#FatherhoodIs) and also view/like the photo exhibit at http://www.facebook.com/thesocialseries .

White Kids To Be The Minority According to CNN Money White, non-Hispanic kids will no longer make up the majority of America’s youth in just five to six years, according to Census Bureau projections released Wednesday. Those projections, which include four different scenarios for population growth, estimate that today’s minority ethnic groups will soon account for at least half of the under-18 population, either in 2018 or 2019. “This is going to start from the bottom of the age distribution and move its way up,” said William Frey, demographer and senior fellow for the Brookings Institution. “All of these projections show we’re moving to greater diversity in the United States.” Already, more than half of American babies being born belong to racial and ethnic groups traditionally thought of as “minorities” — which means it could soon be time to toss that word out completely. By the time those kids grow up to become adults — sometime between 2036 and 2042 — everyone in the working-age population (ages 18 to 64) will be a member of a group that comes up short of the 50% line. Demographers call it a “minority-majority.” No one single racial or ethnic group will make up more than half of the population. White, non-Hispanic people currently make up about 63% of the entire United States population. Starting in 2041, they’ll account for less than half, according to projections. The Census Bureau said international migration will eventually surpass births, becoming the single largest driver of population growth by 2050. Births have been the main catalyst for U.S. population growth since at least 1850, when the Census Bureau started gathering the information. “Our nation has had higher immigration rates in the past, particularly during the great waves of the late 19th and early 20th centuries,” Thomas Mesenbourg, Census Bureau senior adviser, said in a written statement. “This projected milestone reflects the mix of our nation’s declining fertility rates, the aging of the baby boomer population and continued immigration.” Meanwhile, as the population ages and lifespans grow longer, the share of America’s population that’s of working age is on the decline. As of last year, people ages 18 to 64 accounted for roughly 63% of the U.S. population, but by 2060, their share could fall to 57%. Unless the retirement age also rises, that could cause a big problem for funding entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare. SMH 70 Tennessee Inmates Disciplined For Posting Inappropriate Pics On Facebook Via WSMV The Tennessee Department of Correction launched investigations in 14 prisons and disciplined 70 inmates following a report by the Channel 4 I-Team that showed inmates using drugs and partying behind bars and showing it off on Facebook. The Channel 4 I-Team found more than 100 inmates operating Facebook pages from behind bars – posting photos and videos of convicted criminals claiming to be using drugs, flashing large amounts of cash, partying, hoarding snacks and, in one case, setting a shirt on fire inside a prison cell. The discovery of the Facebook pages raises real questions for correction officials, because inmates don’t have Internet access and cell phones are prohibited. The Channel 4 I-Team found many of the inmates who are enjoying Facebook, communicating with family and friends and sharing pictures are convicted murderers and rapists. In one case Ivan Moreno – who strangled and murdered Bellevue grandmother Mary Sadler – was found on Facebook, showing pictures of himself playing a guitar inside a cell. “My eyes started watering. I started shaking. I couldn’t believe I could see him again,” said Sadler’s granddaughter, Michelle Elliot. Moreno isn’t the only one getting his social swerve on however… The Channel 4 I-Team also found convicted murderer Brandon White, who killed Ryan Wright, posting pictures of his phone and holding $200 cash. “That’s not punishment. That’s not any kind of punishment. It’s just like being out on the outside. It’s still freedom for them,” said Ryan’s mother, Linda Wright. “We can never communicate again. And he (Brandon White) has access to be able to communicate with the outside world.” Welp Linda, the joke’s on you and your family, and the DOC doesn’t seem like they are in a rush to solve the problem The victims’ families said when the criminals were sentenced to prison, they never imagined them posting photos of themselves to Facebook watching TV or burying themselves in junk food. We showed all the pictures and videos to TDOC Assistant Commissioner Tony Parker, who is in charge of security in state prisons. “Is this too extravagant for a guy to have who is behind bars?” Finley asked. “Obviously, this inmate is trying to be flagrant and show off all this property. Obviously, it’s an issue,” Parker said. Finley asked how all this can be happening while correctional officers are watching. “It’s not an issue of not enough correctional officers.
