Can Bill O’Reilly, Ridley & Tony Scott Top These Other Past and Future Retellings of Lincoln’s Assassination?

In 1865, actor and Confederate loyalist John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in the balcony of Ford’s Theatre, committing one of the most notorious crimes in American history. In 2013, Fox News talking head Bill O’Reilly will team up with Tony and Ridley Scott for a two-hour National Geographic documentary exploring the events surrounding Lincoln’s death, adapted from Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination That Changed America Forever , co-written by O’Reilly and Martin Dugard. But with so many previous Lincoln assassination projects in the ether, what new ground can O’Reilly and the Scott brothers tread in Killing Lincoln ? Lincoln’s death, of course, was so violent, tragic, and significant an event that it inspired many a filmmaker over the years. D.W. Griffith made a film in 1930 — his second screen depiction of the act — entitled simply Abraham Lincoln , that examined the president’s life, taking a few creative liberties along the way. (You can watch it here in its entirety, if you’re so inclined.) In the same decade, John Ford made two movies with ties to Lincoln: The Prisoner of Shark Island , about the doctor who tended to Booth after the attack on Lincoln, and Young Mr. Lincoln , which focused on the future president’s career as a young lawyer. And as the decades went on, scores more depictions of Lincoln’s life and death were committed to celluloid as generation after generation of filmmakers sought to mine the event for the social and historical significance it bore to the shaping of America. Unfortunately, other attempts, like Robert Redford’s recent The Conspirator , proved downright snoozeworthy. Hence, it seems, O’Reilly and the Scott brothers’ attempt to jazz up the Lincoln saga with “feature-like re-enactments, rare historical archives and CGI.” CGI! O’Reilly and Dugard’s 2011 nonfiction book promised “history that reads like a thriller.” Set your DVRs for high intrigue at Ford’s Theatre! (And if that’s not enough Honest Abe for ya, there’s also Steven Spielberg ‘s Daniel Day-Lewis-starring Lincoln biopic and the promising Abe Lincoln: Vampire Hunter coming up later this year.) Regardless of how much adrenaline the O’Reilly factor pumps into recreating Booth’s dastardly attack in Killing Lincoln , I’m not sure it could stand up to the rollicking menace of this recreation, as seen in the major motion picture National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets : Or: Might it unearth new theories regarding what motivated Booth to pull the trigger, a la Family Guy ? In any case, there’s no way Killing Lincoln can capture the truth of the event quite like this sketch from The Whitest Kids U Know . I’m pretty sure this is totally historically accurate .

Chris Brown Won’t Be Doing Interviews In 2012

‘If people are going to judge anything, judge him for his talent,’ manager tells Billboard of crafting strategy for the pop&B star. By Rebecca Thomas Chris Brown Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images There’ll be no chair-throwing in 2012. After a year in which Chris Brown ‘s applause-worthy feats — Billboard 200 chart-topper F.A.M.E. and a successful tour of the same name — at times threatened to be overshadowed by his penchant for (social) media gaffes, the singer’s team has announced they’re implementing a ban on interviews. Asked whether there was a specific strategy planned for Brown in the New Year, the 22-year-old’s manager, Tina Davis, told Billboard magazine it was to “not have him do interviews but to concentrate on performing and recording,” adding that the idea had been germinating for some time. Last May, Breezy made headlines after a “Good Morning America” interview , when he vented frustration over a line of questioning that zeroed in on ex Rihanna by hurling a chair through a backstage window afterward. The wave of bad press that ensued hit just as the Virginia-born crooner was making the rounds to promote his fourth studio effort, F.A.M.E. Now, as he preps the follow-up to that disc, Fortune, Davis seems determined to steer clear of any possible speed bumps. “We’re not trying to be rude, selfish or disrespectful to anyone in any way,” she told the mag. “If people are going to judge anything, judge him for his talent. He signed up to sing and entertain. Not to talk about his personal life.” Brown may be taking a cue from another superstar, Kanye West, whose self-imposed press-lockout has yielded some impressively expansive Twitter sprees . But it remains to be seen whether the singer will take to the social-networking site as an outlet in similar fashion. On New Year’s Eve, the “Look at Me Now” singer sent a heartfelt message to his fan faithful: “I LOVE Team Breezy unconditionally! Goodbye 2011. Let 2012 bring as much peace positivity and happiness as possible!” he wrote in a hopeful, if wistful, post. He hasn’t tweeted since. How Path is Making ‘Small’ the New ‘Big’ in Social Media

Quote Of The Day: Hollyweird Actor Daniel Craig Says Politicians Are “S***heads”

Here he goes again… After already providing his illuminating views on the Kardashian clan and their success, actor Daniel Craig has continued to speak with candor, this time on the subject of politicians. Daniel Craig isn’t one to mince words, and in the latest issue of Men’s Health, he has found his latest target: politicians. “You immediately are aligning yourself with a political party,” Craig told the magazine. “Politicians are sh–heads. That’s how they become politicians, even the good ones. “We’re actors, we’re artists, we’re very nice to each other. They’ll turn around and stab you in the f–king back.” Craig, 43, earlier this year called the Kardashians “f–king idiots” for parading around Hollywood televising their most intimate moments, and his assessment of kowtowing politicians is no less flattering. “Tony Blair started it much more than anybody’s ever done,” he said of politicians who attempt to be on-the-ins with the celebrity crowd. “It becomes ‘Mephisto,’ ” he said, referencing a 1981 film about an actor who aligns with the Nazis in order to climb the social ladder. One man who balances on the line between politicians and celebrity that the “James Bond” actor does respect, however, is George Clooney. “George has his finger on the political pulse, and he’s one of those guys who can get up and talk, and I don’t have that … If someone shoves a microphone in your face and says, ‘Explain yourself,’ you have to have a 100% understanding of why you’re doing it, and unless you’re 100%, don’t f–king do it, leave it alone, let your work speak for itself.” We like this guy, he just tells it like it is. Avoid ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Spoilers With Our Five Tips

As July 20, 2012, release inches closer, how to keep some mystery. By Kara Warner Marion Cotillard and Christian Bale in “The Dark Knight Rises” Photo: Warner Bros. Gone are the days when moviegoers could arrive at a theater on opening day knowing almost nothing about what would unfold onscreen. Too much technology and the big, bad advertising/promotional machine have made it nearly impossible to avoid finding out about key plot points ahead of time. I don’t like it. Take all this crazy hullabaloo surrounding next year’s surefire crowd-pleaser “The Dark Knight Rises,” for example. Don’t get me wrong: I am as psyched about this movie as anyone; I just don’t want to know everything about it. So, in an effort to keep myself from stumbling across something I don’t want to, here is a handy guide for avoiding “The Dark Knight Rises” spoilers from now until the film’s July 20, 2012, release. 1. Take a Stand/Tell Your Friends I don’t know about you, but my film-obsessed friends are the worst offenders when it comes to spoilers. They’ll start conversations with, “Did you see [spoiler] in that teaser for [movie]?!?” Be proactive, and politely inform your nearest and dearest that you really and truly wish to remain as spoiler-free as possible — and that the future of your relationship depends upon it. 2. Stay Away From Social-Networking Sites This is tough one, living in this overly connected day and age of ours, but very important if you’re committed to the cause. If you have to be on Twitter and Facebook, try to limit your use on days when there is news or new videos announced or leaked about the flick. Be on the lookout for “spoiler-free” reportage, because as nice as it is to come across a “Spoiler Alert!” it’s often right in front of or next to the spoiler in question. Also, if you’ve followed through with item #1 on this list, your friends might do you a solid and avoid drawing your attention to their overly descriptive, excited reactions and remarks in their tweets and status updates. 3. Don’t Watch Trailers Once upon a time, watching the previews before a movie used to be as paramount to my film-going experience as seeing the full-length feature that followed them. That was up until a few years ago when studios started churning out five-minute reveal-all opuses that give away the best gags, lines, action sequences and cameos. I know that the new “Dark Knight Rises” trailer is amazing without watching it, and I’ll be following the protocol set with Nolan’s previous Batman films wherein I’ll watch the trailers after I see the film. Caveat: I will watch a trailer if I’ve read the source material, i.e. the book, graphic novel, self-help book upon which the film is based. Or if I’m forced to write about it, which leads to the next item … 4. Don’t Have a Job Covering Entertainment News Make no mistake, I love my job. Live for it, most days. The only thing worth complaining about is the state of being constantly over-informed. We journalists should go after and keep up with any and all pertinent information as it relates to our audience, but in doing so, we’re confronted with the proverbial double-edged sword in being too in-the-know. Plus, sometimes we’re invited to very special events and presentations with preview footage and conversations with filmmakers that cannot be ignored, as was the case with the early press screening of the “Dark Knight Rises” prologue I attended. 5. Be Realistic, or Move to El Paso Let’s face it: It’s nearly impossible to avoid all spoilers. You never know when a new TV spot will air, a photo will leak or your friends will strike up a conversation about Bane’s mumblings or Catwoman’s costume. Just as it seems ridiculous to obsess over uncovering spoilers, it’s probably equally unhealthy to rearrange your life to avoid them. But in making people aware of your wishes, limiting your social networking on certain newsy days and not watching trailers, it’s possible to walk into the theater on July 20 without having been exposed to the entire plot and future of the franchise. Or you can move to El Paso, Texas, which was recently named the least socially networked city in the United States and where you’re more likely to have a conversation about BBQ than Batman. Top Newsmakers Of 2011

MTV News counts down the stories that mattered to you most, from Lady Gaga’s call to action to Amy Winehouse’s untimely death. By Gil Kaufman Amy Winehouse Photo: Getty Images Like you, we’re pop-culture obsessives. That’s why from stars revealing baby bumps on live TV to the end (or near-end) of two of the most monumental movie franchises in recent memory and the deaths of a pair of the aughts’ quirkiest, most singular personalities, MTV News brought you everything you needed to know about the bold-faced names that mattered to you most in 2011. We looked back at the many big stories of the year and came up with a list of our Top 10 Newsmakers of 2011: 10. Amy Winehouse’s Death At age 27, British soul belter Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London apartment on July 23. The “Rehab” singer had lived a life on the edge, with multiple arrests and stints in detox, and while we were pulling for her, the news of her death from alcohol intoxication was a gut punch. As MTV readers flooded us with remembrances of her sultry voice and no-B.S. persona, everyone from Katy Perry and Rihanna to Nicki Minaj shared their love, fellow musicians paid tribute at the VMAs and I recalled the first time I saw her perform in the U.S. and how the pain in her songs set the stage for such confessional singers as her friend Adele . 9. ‘Hunger Games’ Goes Viral For 100-Day Countdown

In this week’s Hobnobbing, we examine Lionsgate’s latest attention-grabbing campaign. By Amy Wilkinson Jennifer Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth in “Hunger Games” Photo: Lions Gate One-hundred days can seem like a pittance when, say, it’s the first week of September and you’ve pleasantly (and too quickly) whiled away three months’ worth of summer vacation. But 100 days can feel like an eternity when it’s all that’s standing between a fan and a highly anticipated film debut. Such is the case for the big-screen adaptation of ” The Hunger Games ,” which hits theater March 23, 2012 — exactly 100 days from today. To sate fans’ appetites and capitalize on a milestone date, Lionsgate launched a viral campaign called #HungerGames100 Poster Puzzle Hunt. The online scavenger scramble recruited 100 different websites (including MTV ) to host a piece of a puzzle and tweet a relevant link. Once solved, the puzzle would reveal the newest poster for the film starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. In keeping with the film’s Twitter-heavy rollout, intrigued fans took to the social-networking site to chat about the project. @mayachelsie wrote, “This #HungerGames100 is making me too excited. Oh gosh. I think I’m gonna throw up… 100 DAYS TILL THE HUNGER GAMES!” Similarly, @KarimaHessen enthused, “#HungerGames100 This is going to be the longest 100 days of my liiiiiife!!” Though many fans were excited by the film’s impending debut and the campaign itself, the prospect of hunting down 100 individual pieces was daunting for many. @16princessful mused, “I am not gonna even try to find all 100 pieces cuz I don’t even know where to start lol. #HungerGames100.” @mollsabeth chimed in, “If I didn’t have a job, I would absolutely be trying to solve the #HungerGames100 puzzle.” Whether you joined the hunt or waited for a more industrious (not to mention patient) fan to solve the puzzle, it’s hard to deny Lionsgate caught the Internet’s attention, with many high-profile sites participating (in addition to MTV, Entertainment Weekly, E! Online and People all played ball) and the campaign, at times, trending on Twitter. This isn’t the first time Lionsgate has utilized the power of the interwebs. Back in October, MTV and a handful of other sites participated in a concerted rollout of the film’s character posters ( hello, Peeta! ), and, of course, Twitter went into a tizzy for the film’s first teaser and trailer debuts. Though we can only speculate as to what viral treasures await in 2012, we want to know what you think of these types of campaigns. Quirky and cool? Or too much work?
