Keep It In The Closet: ESPN Releasing Report Claiming The Baltimore Ravens Covered Up Ray Rice Abuse Video

ESPN To Release Report On Ravens Covering Up Abusive Ray Rice Video Did the Baltimore Ravens organization know about the video of Ray Rice knocking out his wife in an elevator long before it went public? ESPN says yes. via NYPost The Ravens and the NFL were reeling Friday night from an explosive report stating the team conducted a wide-ranging cover-up of Ray Rice’s elevator assault almost immediately after it happened in February. In a 7,000-word story published shortly after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s apologetic news conference, ESPN reported Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti and several high-ranking team officials worked feverishly to keep Rice out of jail and keep the video of him knocking out his then-fiancee from ever becoming public. The network also reported that, once the video was released Sept. 8 by TMZ, Bisciotti cut Rice and immediately tried to buy the former Rutgers star’s silence with a post-football job offer with the team. The Ravens released a statement late Friday claiming the story contained “numerous errors, inaccuracies, false assumptions and, perhaps, misunderstandings,” though the team refused to specify any. ESPN responded immediately by saying the network “stands behind [the] reporting” of the story’s authors, which include Pulitzer Prize winner Don Van Natta Jr. The most damaging detail in the report alleged the Ravens’ security director knew the exact details of the elevator incident just hours after it happened Feb. 15 at the since-closed Revel casino because a police lieutenant described the video to him as the lieutenant was watching it. Sounds like the Ravens definitely have some explaining to do!

Cullen Finnerty, Star College QB, Found Dead in Michigan

Cullen Finnerty, a star quarterback at Grand Valley State who briefly played in the NFL for the Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos, has been found dead. Details are still coming him and the cause of death will remain unknown until an autopsy is performed, but Finnerty disappeared on Sunday and his corpse turned up last night in the woods of northern Michigan. Lake County Undersheriff Dennis Robinson says foul play is unlikely and that a family member described Finnerty as “nervous about something” the last time they talked on the phone. His loved ones are concerned that he suffered a “mental episode” of some kind, according to Robinson. Finnerty, 30, led Grand Valley State to three Division II national titles and over 50 wins during his four years as a starter. He had short stints with the Ravens and Broncos in the pros. Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly, who coached Finnerty at Grand Valley State, said in a statement: “It’s very chilling. He led me to a national championship as a true freshman. When I left, coach Martin took over and won two more national championships. My heart goes out to the family and to his beautiful wife.”

Anquan Boldin Traded to 49ers, Teammates React in Shock

In a stunning move that has left teammates shocked and angry, the Baltimore Ravens have traded All-Pro wide receiver Anquan Boldin to their 2013 Super Bowl opponents. In exchange, Baltimore will receive a sixth round draft pick… and… wait… THAT’S IT?!? Boldin is coming off an impressive postseason, catching 22 passes for 380 yards and four touchdowns in four games. But the Ravens had reportedly asked the receiver to rework his contract and, upon his refusal, they will save $5.5 million in salary cap room with this trade. Not that it’s any comfort to Torrey Smith. The wideout took to Twitter in response this afternoon and wrote: “This business is BS at times.”

Ravens Cheerleader Barred from Super Bowl

Controversy has broken out around the Baltimore Ravens, and not because Ray Lewis was once accused of murder or may have used deer antler spray to recover from a torn triceps. Courtney Lenz, a 23-year old Maryland native, has been a member of the team’s cheerleading squad for five years. But she has been barred from the Super Bowl sidelines because she announced her retirement at the end of the regular season. And with an online petition out there to reinstate her for the big game, Lenz has spoken to ABC News and explained how crushed she is by the development. “I’m just devastated by the whole situation,” she says. “This was very unexpected… I didn’t even think there would be a chance of me not going with being a five-year veteran.” Lenz believes the Ravens are simply punishing her for quitting the team, which she was forced to do once her marketing job schedule made it impossible to do both. “They’ve been really hard on me this year since I told them I was leaving,” Lenz said, adding that she “thought it was a mistake” when her name was not included among the 32 cheerleaders announced for the game. But Ravens spokeswoman Heather Harness simply says in a statement: “As set by the NFL, we are permitted to bring 32 cheerleaders to the Super Bowl. Our selection process was based upon three criteria: seniority, performance ability and personal conduct throughout the season. As much as we would like to take the whole team, we are unable to do so, due to parameters set by the NFL.” Do you think Lenz should have been among the final cut? Even though she did drop out a few weeks ago?

Kyle Williams Takes Blame for San Francisco Defeat, Faces Death Threats

The 49ers fell to the Giants yesterday in the NFC Championship Game and – like Billy Cundiff on the Ravens – most of the blame lies at the feet of one player: Kyle Williams, who turned the ball over TWICE on punt returns, including one fumble that led to an easy New York field goal in overtime. Williams has taken responsibility for the mishaps, but that isn’t enough for some crazed fans. Kyle Williams Fumbles, 49ers Lose Many have taken to Twitter and issued death threat against the little-used wide receiver, who was only pressed in to duty due to an injury. “It certainly makes you question our culture of sports as it stands,” said Kyle’s dad, Chicago White Sox General Manager Kenny Williams, while kicker David Akers also stood up for his teammate: “I’m irritated with the way people are treating him, absolutely. I think it’s ridiculous. You know, get a grip on what life’s about. He went out and he put his soul out there. That’s what he does. He was not trying to do anything other than make an incredible play for this team.” We agree. And fans ought to be thanking Williams for helping to set up a Giants/Patriots Super Bowl. It’s gonna be epic!
