Patrick Stump Clears Up Rumors About Solo Album On Twitter

‘I was tempted out of my cave by misinformation,’ he says of his recent tweets. By James Montgomery Patrick Stump Photo: Brendan Hoffman/Getty Images Patrick Stump has never really been the most tech-savvy dude — his social networking presence isn’t exactly what you would call robust — so, when he took to his Twitter account late Friday (July 16), it was clearly because he had something important to say. “This is the first tweet I’m typing myself,” he wrote on the page, which, up until this point, had been maintained/updated by someone else. “Gonna clear up some misinformation.” At issue were stories about his upcoming solo album , several of which seemed to insinuate that he’d no longer be playing every instrument on the disc ( something he’s long maintained ), but would be joined on the album by former Taking Back Sunday bassist Matt Rubano and drummer Mike Fasano. “Matt Rubano is playing in my band, he’s a genius, but he is not playing on the record,” Stump wrote. “Mike Fasano isn’t playing on the record either, he’s my drum tech, and a damn good one … I’m still playing everything on the record and it’s almost done.” Considering that the Rubano stuff had been circulating since late May, you get a pretty good idea of how often Stump checks in online. But, since he had momentum, he also used his Twitter to address a Washington Post blog post that quoted him as saying his debut disc would feature “outsider folk.” ” ‘Outsider folk’ was a misquote. I said, ‘Outsider funk,’ but it’s not even really that anymore,” he wrote. “It’s basically an R&B album, but as they say, ‘Talking about music is like dancing about architecture …’ You’ll have to just hear yourself.” He closed by promising that fans would be hearing his much-discussed solo debut very soon, writing, “Patience will be rewarded. I guarantee no Chinese Democracy. ” MTV News sent Stump an e-mail to see if he had anything to add to his, uh, addendums, and, somewhat surprisingly, we got a response — one that hinted, in a very funny way, that fans probably shouldn’t expect another outpouring of Tweets like this any time soon. “The only thing I have to add: I still don’t dig Twitter. To paraphrase Lee Marvin, ‘I know my career must be doing great ’cause I’m getting quoted incorrectly,’ ” Stump wrote. “I was tempted out of my cave by misinformation. But you’ll never see me tweet what I had for lunch.” Related Artists Patrick Stump Fall Out Boy

Nicki Minaj Reveals That She’s A ‘Hills’ Fan

‘I was SO mad wen Justin bobby cut his hair!’ the MC tweets before tonight’s series finale. By Mawuse Ziegbe Nicki Minaj Photo: Bryan Bedder/ Getty Images The drama the ladies of the “The Hills” have grappled with for six seasons has captivated millions of fans, including one hip-hop diva in particular: Nicki Minaj. Minaj recently revealed via Twitter that not only does she watch the show — which signs off on Tuesday (July 13) — but she has strong opinions about the goings-on of the cast. Apparently, the MC has been keeping up with the antics of Audrina’s (and Kristin’s) on-and-off boy toy, Justin “Bobby” Brescia. When a fan pressed Minaj on Twitter about whether she watches “The Hills,” the star tweeted , “Yes! I was SO mad wen Justin bobby cut his hair!” Her taste in TV isn’t the only thing the star has revealed on the social-networking website. Last week, the Young Money MC announced the release date of her hotly anticipated debut album on Twitter. “Yes. It’s time. November 23rd,” the star tweeted Thursday. When MTV News caught up with the “Your Love” rapper on the set of the video for her #1 track , Minaj called the material she was working on with producer Swizz Beatz “magical” and was generally amped about the album. “When people hear the album, they’re going to get to know Onika [her birth name is Onika Maraj]. And no one knows Onika,” Minaj said. “I really didn’t think I would be this excited about the songs that I’m coming up with. I’m really, really proud.” Swizzy was also excited about his work with Minaj. “We have a lot of small conversations that end up [turning] into big musical moments,” the producer told MTV News. “When you hear Nicki on my track, you’re gonna see that ‘Wow, she just went from here to there.’ I’m happy to be a part of that.” Are you surprised to hear that Nicki is a “Hills” fan? Let us know in the comments! Join MTVNews.com on Tuesday, July 13, at 8 p.m. ET for a live stream from the red carpet of Hollywood’s Roosevelt Hotel, where the stars will gather for “The Hills Live: A Hollywood Ending.” Then tune in for the series finale at 10 p.m. ET on MTV and “The Hills Live: A Hollywood Ending After Show” at 11. Japanese Voters Reject Ruling Party and Doubling ‘VAT Tax’; AP Calls It a ‘Sales Tax,’ Ignores U.S. Implications

An outraged electorate has just handed Japan’s ruling party its hat in elections for half of the seats in the upper house of that country’s parliament in a direct reversal of election results from a year ago. Opposition parties made major gains. The results constitute a resounding rejection of a massive value-added tax increase proposed by a guy whose immediate predecessor of the same party sounded an awful lot like the U.S. President Barack Obama when he led his party to a historic victory a year ago. But, as will be shown later, you wouldn’t know that from reading the Associated Press’s coverage of Sunday’s returns. But first, a bit of background: The 2010 version of Naoto Kan (pictured at top right in an AP photo) is round two of an attempt by the country’s Democratic Party (no direct relation that I know of, but philosophically they’re nearly clones) to “remake” the island nation. If that sounds depressingly familiar, it should. The parallels of Kan’s same-party predecessor’s victory to Barack Obama’s 2008 electoral win are eerie, as this August 2009 election night report from Eric Talmadge the Associated Press will demonstrate (bolds are mine): Japan opposition wins landslide victory Vote seen as a barometer of frustrations over high unemployment, falling exports Japan’s opposition swept to a historic victory in elections Sunday, crushing the ruling conservative party that has run the country for most of the postwar era and assuming the daunting task of pulling the economy out of its worst slump since World War II. A grim-looking Prime Minister Taro Aso conceded defeat just a couple hours after polls had closed, suggesting he would quit as president of the Liberal Democratic Party, which has ruled Japan for all but 11 months since 1955. “The results are very severe,” Aso said. “There has been a deep dissatisfaction with our party.” Unemployment and deflation – and an aging, shrinking population – have left families fearful of what the future holds. Fed up with the LDP, voters turned overwhelmingly to the opposition Democratic Party of Japan, which ran a populist-leaning platform with plans for cash handouts to families with children and expanding the social safety net. … The Democrats’ plan to give families 26,000 yen, or $275 (U.S.), a month per child through junior high is meant to ease parenting costs and encourage more women to have babies. Japan’s population of 127.6 million peaked in 2006, and is expected to fall below 100 million by the middle of the century. The Democrats are also proposing toll-free highways, free high schools, income support for farmers, monthly allowances for job seekers in training, a higher minimum wage and tax cuts. The estimated bill comes to 16.8 trillion yen ($179 billion) if fully implemented starting in fiscal year 2013 – and critics say that will only further bloat Japan’s already massive public debt. Adjusted for relative population size, the stated $179 billion amount would be the equivalent of about $435 billion in the U.S. That may not seem like much compared to the Obama and the Democrats’ $800 billion-plus “stimulus” of last year, but keep in mind that Japan spent the better part of the 1990s trying to make government stimulus work with little success. Also note that Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), as the author of the Lost Decade’s stimulus, has hardly been deserving of the “conservative” label the AP’s Talmadge applied to it. Of course, after Japan’s Democrats came to power, they had to deal with the annoying question of how to close the obvious budget deficits they were building. Their answer, as has all too often been the case with U.S. Democrats, was to raise taxes, despite the tax-cut pledge cited in Talmadge’s AP report. In a Monday, July 12 story , the AP’s Jay Alabaster gave readers many of the details on how that idea was received by voters, but left out a really, really important one: Japan braces for gridlock after ruling party loss Japan’s ruling party faced the prospect of political gridlock Monday after an election setback that could undermine its attempts to reduce a ballooning budget deficit and revive growth in the world’s second-largest economy. Half of the 242 seats in the upper house of parliament were up for grabs Sunday. The ruling Democratic Party of Japan won only 44 seats – far below its stated goal of 54 – while opposition parties made major gains. That leaves the Democrats and their tiny coalition partner with 110 seats, well below their majority of 122 before the vote. The conservative Liberal Democratic Party won 51 seats, bringing its total to 84. … the results are a dramatic contrast to the Democrats’ landslide victory just a year ago, when they seized control of parliament and ended the rival Liberal Democrats nearly unbroken 55-year rule. Losing the majority in the upper house will make it more difficult for the Democrats to move ahead on their agenda, which includes cutting wasteful spending, making government more open and creating a solid social security system for a rapidly aging and shrinking population. … I n office just a month, Kan has warned that Japan’s finances could face a Greece-like meltdown if it doesn’t cut back on soaring debt – twice the country’s GDP – and suggested raising the sales tax as a solution. But voters, already suffering from the economic downturn, rejected that idea. … Kan acknowledged defeat early Monday morning, saying he failed to fully explain his proposal to raise the sales tax from 5 percent to as much as 10 percent in coming years. … Kan, a former finance minister with roots in grass-roots activism, enjoyed support ratings of more than 60 percent when he took office in early June. “Sales tax”? What is this “sales tax”? It turns out that Alabaster was really referring to a de facto value-added tax, as shown here in this description of Japan’s tax structure: Japan Consumption Tax The tax is similar to value added tax and is, in fact, imposed on most sales and services provided in Japan and on imports. A taxpayer may offset the consumption tax paid on expenses against the tax he has to pay on his income. Consumption tax is 5%. Companies whose sales per year are less than 10 million yen are tax exempt. Imagine that. Yes Virginia, the “consumption tax” is effectively a VAT tax, as it is imposed on “consumption” by both individuals and companies. Every time “consumption” occurs, i.e., at every stage of production and distribution, the tax kicks in. The 10 million yen exemption is the U.S. equivalent of about $114,000, meaning that only the very small businesses are exempt. It seems that the AP and Mr. Alabaster didn’t want to give their U.S. audience the impression that voters elsewhere have rejected a steep increase in VAT taxes. Why, accurate and responsible reporting might have made American readers more resistant to allowing this dangerous idea to get started. Apparently, Alabaster and the AP want to see a VAT tax come to pass in the U.S. so badly that they are willing to blatantly misrepresent events overseas in the name of that cause. Beyond the self-evident deception just described, if what has just transpired in Japan’s elections had taken place at the expense of a conservative government trying to cut taxes while a conservative or Republican president occupying the Oval Office was trying to do the same thing, we would never have heard the end of it. As it is, you can virtually take it to the bank that the establishment press will fail to identify the obvious comparison between what Japanese voters have rejected to what the Obama administration both is doing (letting the Bush tax cuts expire, an action I like to refer to as “repealing the tax system that grew the economy for almost six years”), and wants to do more of, including the VAT tax. Raising taxes in a debt-drenched nation during a flat or allegedly recovering economy, in addition to being economically dumb, is an electoral loser. What part of “no” don’t these people understand? Texas GOP: The New White Supremacist Party

The Texas republican party (ironically known as the Grand Old Party) has stooped to a new low, and I’m not talking about their removal of the slave trade from textbooks; it’s their new party platform. Now if you think erasing history is bad just wait until you hear what they want to do next. The Texas GOP’s 25 page platform of absurdity really pulls out all the stops, some of the details are so insane it almost seems like a script from the show Punked. The platforms section on Government power states that all executive orders are to be eliminated and all previous executive orders are to be repealed. The platform goes on to say, the Texas GOP opposes affirmative action and reparations based on “discriminatory criteria.” And the party is against nationalization of land for protecting endangered species or conservation. Just to clarify, they don’t want national parks or reservations for animals, they’d rather see a parking lot put up over saving a species. Now if the above does not seem all that bad to you, the platform goes on to include things that revert laws to the way things were run in the 1950′s south. Now unless you were born and raised in Texas, I’m sure you know what the Jim Crow laws are now the party’s platform is wanting to get some of those law’s passed again. The party supports the repeal of motor voter laws, re-registering voters every four years, and felon disenfranchisement. Another quick history lesson here, the U.S. constitution has a spot dedicated to the separation of church and state. Texas seems to think that it can just ignore the constitution and the Union of which it is a member. The Texas Republican party platform supports public displays of the ten commandments in government buildings and also enforcing penalties on people who “desecrate” the American flag, which falls under freedom of expression. To further target what the Republicans see as liberal or Democrat; they attack family values. It’s shocking to me that this party knows what family values are. According to the platform, the party seeks to ban homosexuality outright, and to it opposes the legalization of sodomy. Continuing down the path of the extreme the party wishes to make it a felony to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple, or for a civil official to perform a same-sex marriage ceremony. Sticking with their support for male only values the party lists its strong disagreement with abortion rights, as well as being strongly opposed to female reproductive rights. Now if you are wanting to adopt a foster kid to bring into your family, the Texas GOP has something for you, they want to repeal the restrictions on corporal discipline for foster children, now you can beat the kid you want to adopt whose life hasn’t been hard enough already. Of course Texas knows what is right for your children as well so they will outlaw sex education in favor of abstinence only education, see my Bristol Palin post to see how well that works. The recently passed health care plan, or ObamaCare as they call it, would also be out, along with your social security checks. So after doing 50 years of work or more and paying into Social Security you would get nothing for your hard labor. Now the GOP is not out of gas yet, they go on to say that any regulations on gun control are out, so your friendly neighborhood felon can get his hands on one too!!! Since they are putting guns in everyone’s hands including rapists, they now want to make rape a death penalty crime. While the deep water horizon oil well continues to leak 60,000 barrels a day into the Gulf, the Texas GOP is turning a blind eye. They want deep water oil drilling in the Gulf to resume immediately. Furthermore, they feel that employers should be allowed to discriminate on any basis, as well as repealing minimum wage. The Texas GOP demands that the U.S. removes itself from the United Nations, and it also calls for a repeal of birthright citizenship unless its to an American, screw the fence just outlaw Mexican Americans. Like I said at first I thought this was a joke, but once you see the platform, you know they are dead serious. They feel that this is Americas true belief system and that Texas sets the standard for all conservatives. Now Texas is run by a Republican, Joe Barton. While this would be laughed out of any other Republican state, in Texas it actually has a chance. It’s frightening that a mainstream party can publish this garbage and get away with mocking the President. I should mention that Texas is the only state allowed to secede from the Union, so if this should ever pass we have the option to force them out. Facebook dresses down nipple pics

Facebook is clamping down on nudity after it shut down a page featuring a topless porcelain doll. The doll features on a page advertising exclusive Sydney jewellery boutique, Victoria Buckley Jewellery. Facebook's Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, which governs its relationship with users and those who interact with the site, specifies strict rules when it comes to risque content. “You will not post content that: is hateful, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence,” section seven of its safety section states. On Sunday morning business owner Ms Buckley received six messages from Facebook saying: “Images have been removed”. “We have removed your images, you're in violation,” Ms Buckley said she was told. But as Ms Buckley has a number of pages she was confused which images were removed. In a bid not to further breach the social media giant's rules, and lose her business's social media portal with 2,000 followers, she removed all pictures of the topless doll. Ms Buckley made efforts to contact Facebook, but could not track down anyone. She then started a new group called “Save Ophelia – exquisite doll censored by Facebook”, which was almost immediately shut down with no explanation. This was despite her also removing the images from that page after another violation notice. “I'm not trying to slag off Facebook, but I'm frustrated with this process,” Ms Buckley told AAP. “There's not a lot of clarity about what is going on. “I realise the images are a problem for Facebook, but the site was closed down overnight with no warning.” And the images are long gone. The story of Facebook's censorship has since attracted the interest of the world's media – branding it “nipplegate”. Facebook itself does not have a dedicated spokesperson in Australia. AAP spoke to a public relations company which explained the strict rules the site enforces. That person would neither confirm or deny the “nipplegate” incident, but did say that it is easy for images or content to be reported by fellow users. Given there are 400 million Facebook users, it is through that reporting process that breaches were discovered, the public relations person said. Although the Victoria Buckley Jewellery Facebook page still exists, the porcelain doll, which was judged to be showing too much flesh, has now been censored with a bold black rectangle across its tiny bust. added by: eden49

AP Report Understates the Financial Impact of LIHEAP’s Heap of Liars and Thieves

At the Associated Press, Kelli Kennedy’s Thursday report on fraud and abuse in the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program ( LIHEAP ), which is well done in several aspects, nonetheless significantly understates the losses that are occurring in the program. The AP report deals with a now-released Government Accountability Office report on the results of investigations in nine states. Here are the first four paragraphs of Kennedy’s report (HT David Freddoso at the Washington Examiner), including reference to a woman who is LIHEAP’s version of a welfare queen: A federal program designed to help impoverished families heat and cool their homes wasted more than $100 million paying the electric bills of thousands of applicants who were dead, in prison or living in million-dollar mansions, according to a government investigation. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services spent $5 billion through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program in 2009, doling out money to states with little oversight of the program. Some states don’t verify applicants’ identifies or income. For example, the program helped pay the electric bill of a woman who lives in a $2 million home in a wealthy Chicago suburb and drives a Mercedes, according to the yet-to-be released report obtained by The Associated Press. The Government Accountability Office studied the program after a 2007 investigation by Pennsylvania’s state auditor found 429 applicants received more than $162,000 using the Social Security numbers of dead people. The GAO investigated Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Virginia, which represented about one-third of the program’s funding in 2009. The agency found improper payments in about 9 percent of households receiving benefits in those states, totaling $116 million. Unless someone can demonstrate that other states’ LIHEAP programs are airtight (good luck with that), the true losses in the program are far higher than the figure Kennedy cited. We already know from her report that Pennsylvania, which was outside the scope of GAO’s investigation, has had serious program problems. Since the states involved “represented about one-third of the program’s funding,” total losses to fraud and abuse are more than likely in the neighborhood of $350 million or three times higher than the reported $116 million. Kennedy should have included a sentence along these lines: “If the experience of these six states is representative of what is occurring in the program nationwide, annual LIHEAP losses to fraud and abuse are about $350 million.” LIHEAP’s long list of “not for profit” and corporate defenders at the Campaign for Home Energy Assistance are already defending the program in response to Kennedy’s report. The following is from a statement currently on the group’s home page : We are disappointed that LIHEAP funds may have gone to ineligible parties. In this economy, more and more households cannot afford to heat and cool their homes because of financial woes. The poor, vulnerable populations that this program serves should not be denied the assistance they needs because of some bad actors or some administrative mismanagement. They also believe that the program’s scope should be quintupled: At $5.1 billion in LIHEAP funding, only 1 in 5 eligible Americans are served, which means there are many people who need assistance and are not getting it. A question separate from AP’s report: What would happen to a business where 9% of payments to employees or vendors were improper? Answer: They’d be out of business. But in government, the easy answer is not to clamp down on fraud and abuse (later paragraphs in the AP article demonstrate a decided reluctance to do that on the part of those who should be doing it). Instead, its “answers” are to either raise taxes or borrow more money while constantly advocating even more spending. Meanwhile, the fraud and abuse go on and on. “Responsible government” and “Government oversight,” once again, are shown to be oxymorons. Cross-posted at BizzyBlog.com .
